Mac book pro / boot camp "answers" for dummies

I followed the Installation and Setup Guide word for word...there were just a few words missing that really made it difficult, caused much frustration and almost had a mbp fly out a car window. I am a dummy!
Always print off the Guide and read it first, I read it as I went along and that was a mistake.
Step 1: Updating Firmware
My MBP arrives June 19 and already had the firmware updates. I did need to update OSX to 10.4.7.
Step 2: Download Boot Camp
Visit http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/
Click download. (here is where the installation guide failed to mention some key instructions) Before you can "Burn a Macintosh CD" you must follow the next few steps.
a.) Agree to terms
b.) Select the Macintosh HD
c.) When its done downloading double-click the package icon on your desktop
d.) Put in your blank recordable cd, go into your HD, Applications, Utilites folder, double-click the boot-camp icon.
e.)This is where the installation guide picks up the rest of the instructions. A screen comes up that allows you to burn a macintosh driver cd. Follow the instructions in the guide.
Step 3: Creating a partition
In the guide they don't mention FAT or NTFS formats until after you create the partition. That was dumb! (if you read all the instructions first, instead of following along you would have partitioned differently)
a.) FAT-Provides better compatibility, but must be 32 GB or smaller...now you tell me!
Step 3 continued: Selecting the Windows partition
Here they scare the crap out of you by telling you not to do anything other than select the C drive.
a.) The first screen that comes up is the Windows XP Professional Setup, looks like the one in the Guide but without an option to select C:Partition3. Your only option was to "Install". My jaw dropped..now what??
b.) Click install, the next screen gives you the options. (boy, I was lucky)
c.) Remember what I said about the size of your partition and FAT vs NTFS
Step 4: Installing Macintosh Drivers
They mention here that there "may be" hidden windows that you must respond to or nothing will happen, THERE ARE GOING TO BE AT LEAST 3 HIDDEN WINDOWS....just be aware of that so your not sitting like a dummy waiting for stuff to happen
The rest of the Guide is pretty word for word and easy to follow. Good Luck, hope this saves you some of the frustration I experienced, boy, do I feel dumb!
Simple things you may need to know...
1. "Right-click" by holding the control (ctrl) key and click the mouse at the same time.
2. Select operating system by holding option key at start-up
3. Back up your domain files if use iweb or else you will lose it all....talking from experience here!
Good Luck

Very nice write up.Should help more than a few dum...er,uh...people.

  • Installing Windows XP 2002 Sp2 On mac book pro, Boot Camp

I have a mac book pro and i want to install windows XP on it, but i ran into a problem.
While using boot camp i followed the instructions and i got to the point where Windows XP is supposed to ask for partition drive, but in my case it gives me an error saying that Windows XP disc is not valid. I bought my Windows XP Sp 2 Disc at wal mart couple of years ago. It works fine on my HP PC but not on this one. What is the problem and why does it do that?

You should ask in the Bootcamp forum http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=237

  • Mac book pro Boot Camp / track pad

Hello, recently i bought a Mac Book Pro- 15.4 inch- 2.4 ghz- I want to run windows on the computer as a dual boot using boot camp. I noticed that parallels has an option to sorta "steal" my curent desktop PC's information and use that as the windows part. Is there a way to do this with bootcamp so i do not need to re-purchase windows? if so please share :]. Also i dont know if this is normal or not but my tackpad (edge nearest the keyboard) seems like it doesnt have very much adhesive under it, because it starts sticking up like a sticker does when its running out of adhesive. is this something easily fixed by the genious bar, or do i need to leave it for awhile.
    Thanks for you help,

So I have a Mac Book Pro with a bootcamp Windows 8. I dual monitor on the Mac side with my Mid 2011 iMac through my mini display port via thunder bolt cable. In my perfect world, I would be able to switch to the Windows side and have the iMac mirror or extend my windows display for my gaming pleasure, etc. I'm not sure if it's just a simple driver or that it cannot be done. Please help. Thanks.

  • I installed mountain lion os on my mac book pro and now Word for Mac and my Fluenz Spanish programs do not work. How can I go back to my original OS? Thanks

I installed Mountain Lion OS on my Mac Book Pro and now WORD for Mac and Fluenz Spanish program do not work. How do I reinstall original OS and scrap ML?
    Thanks

My previous answer still stands: Restore from your backup taken before you upgaded to Mountain Lion. For example, a Time Machine backup, a Carbon Copy Cloner clone, or a commercial backup service. Not the disk that came with your computer (which is how I read "OS back up disk").
If you reinstall the original OS from the disk that came with your computer, it will wipe out everything on your computer. (The installer won't install an older OS over a newer one, so you'll have to wipe the disk first.) Then you'll need to restore your data from your backup and reinstall applications like Word.

  • Can you use a 2007 Mac book pro as a monitor for a current Mac mini?

Is it possible to use a 2007 Mac book pro as a monitor for a current Mac mini?

Use a product such as ScreenRecycler over a network. All of these products require a standalone monitor to set up.

  • Mac book pro verses iMac(intel)for streaming video

Mac book pro verses iMac (intel) for streaming video (skpying) which one would you recommend?

Neither one is particularly advantageous. Streaming video will take a considerable amount of power, meaning you'll probably want to keep a MBP's power adapter connected.

  • Hi all, my mac book pro boots up, but my track pad operation is strange, cannot click on anything, although it moves around screen ok. Cannot launch anything, nor close anything. Cannot get task bar to pop up either with the mouse movement.

    Hi All,
My mac book pro 13". It boots ok and skype launches on boot up. connects to internet etc. However, whilst the mouse moves around the scren ok, used via the track pad, I cannot open anything, close anything, or get the task bar to pop up.
I can close the laptop down via the power key, and can use some short cut keys, but the track pad operation is iffy, can you suggest how I rectify this.
I have now solved this, for future reference, I have a magic track pad as well and that was connected via bluetooth and sitting else where in the house. It blocked the laptops trackpad operations. When disconnected, my laptop track pad works fine.
    Cheers

  • HT1338 my mac book pro is constantly "looking for networks" while connected using my home network and other wifi systems. how can i stop it?

Why is my Mac Book constantly "looking for networks" while i am using wifi?

If it is constantly searching for networks every five seconds or so, then it is the bluetooth - wifi problem discussed on other threads. I find that system preferences > network and clicking at the bottom on the 'Show wi-fi status in menu bar' button to switch it off, and then back onto the menu bar, solves the problem. Sometimes on waking I lose wi-fi completely and have to reload, but that's infrequent.
Hopefully Apple will come up with a solution soon.

On my macbook pro, was running on Yosemite and suddenly on starting the system I see "prohibited" sign. After trying a lot of combination of keys,  I added external SSD and booted but it came up with Lion version.

    Greetings skewat,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your Mac is booting to a prohibitory sign. In this situation, to help resolve the issue, I would suggest reading over and working through the information in the attached article.

  • Mac book pro boot slow

My MACBookPro 15"" MAC OS 10.7.5 takes a very long time for its boot process.
The sign of apple appears fast but then you must wait and wait ... until I can fill in my name and my code.
    Aftrwards everything works properly.
Please tell me, what can I do?
    Ludger

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
