New mac book pro - to run boot camp or not?
hi,
im a brand new mac user and have had a brief browse of some problems that others have encountered with boot camp and possible crashes during partitioning...
i'm not sure if anyone can help but i was wondering if it would be safest to run boot camp and partition my hard drive before i even use my new mbp? or to not run it at all - i will only be using windows to play the odd computer game, for everything else i will use my mbp as it was originally intended.
what is the level of risk involved with boot camp? ...should i just run it before any data is saved onto the drive and hope for the best...?
or fork out the cash for the mac versions of the each game (3 max)?
i just don't want to screw it up, as my brother has had similar problems with his... and i've been saving for months!
thanks for reading this far and thankyou for your help in advance!Boot Camp works beautifully if you follow directions. BC is merely an installer (and a good one). Windows works perfectly well on a Mac (better than some PCs). Windows is Windows - it has it's needs. If you are familiar with Windows no problem. Or - if you are willing to learn - no problem. There IS wisdom in installing BC right away. I found that if I install BC right after OS X, it is a good idea. As soon as I loaded the OSX updates there was potential trouble in that the updates were placed right in the spot where I needed my partition to go - requiring the Apple equivalent of a defrag. This happens rarely, but it does happen. Install OS X > Open BootCamp & Install > Partition for Windows > Update OS X - you'll be fine.

17-inch Mac Book Pro does not boot. No startup chime and no video.
Hey guys,
My Mac Book Pro refuses to boot. Whether it's running off the power supply or on the battery, it does the same thing: I hit the power button, I hear the disc drive make it's usual sound, but no apple boot chime, and no video. It just sits there, blank screen and all. Last night in my frustration, I held the power button down for about 5 seconds and the light in front started blinking as if it was expecting a firmware update. I immieditely shut it off. I hope that didn't make the problem worse, but regadless it still has the same problem. I have a feeling my logic board took a dive. What's weird is, I was using it, it was plugged in, I left it for a bit, it went into sleep mode, and that was the last time it was on. It's as if I can't get it out of sleep mode. I've turned it on and off a dozen times, taken the battery out, etc.. And nothing. Any suggestions?Dead On Arrival (DOA) Product: System Failure Out of the Box

Can I use my Mac book pro while downloading a tv series from iTunes?
Can I use my Mac book pro while downloading a long tv series from iTunes? Or will I lose my connection ? And my money?
I use my MacBook Pro all the time when downloading something from the iTunes store without losing my connection. If you would probably depends on the general stability of your WiFi or LAN connection, but you should not.
Also, if a download should get interrupted you can always start it again by going to "Downloads" in iTunes. -

Hi,
Maybe someone can help me resolving a (re) boot issue with my Mac Book Pro. Last few weeks I experienced a tremendous drop in performance (start-up as well as handling and using applications).
Yesterday I downloaded and installed an app to clean stuff from the mac, such as binaries that aren't used, cache files, etc. It resulted in substantial better performance. Than, I used the updater on this application to update. This morning, the Mac wouldn't boot. After several attempts I used the old DVD with Mac OS X to re-install and boot. That worked.
Following this approach, I received two messages (that HP apps weren't secured or something and therefor disabled). Than I updated the Mac OS X and later this evening it asked me if I wanted to install some (4) other updates as well (don't know what updates these were). So I updated but now I am back at square one: My Mac doesn't boot. I do get the grey starting screen, but now even the 'apple' logo is missing.
Anyone else experiencing these problems and have any clues on how to fix it? By the way, I also tried to alter permissions on all files on the main hard drives (to ensure that I do not always have to sign off on updates and or changes of applications). Would that have caused problems? You seem to have a lot going on here, so it's hard to know what's wrong. You likely had some underlying problems before doing the Software Update.
Here's a link that might help with the grey screen problem:

Which app did you download?
If you can get booted up, check in the System Profiler to see that all of your RAM is recognized--if not, you may need to reseat one or both sticks.
If you can boot from your install disc, run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test to check for hardware problems. Freezing can be caused by a dying hard drive, which can also tend to corrupt software.
While booted from the install disc, navigate to Disk Utility and repair your boot disk. You can do this 2 or 3 times even if it says no problems found.
While in Disk Utility, check to see that the SMART status of your hard drive is verified. If not, you will need to replace the drive.
It probably wouldn't hurt to reinstall the OS.
Do you have a good, up to date backup? If not, it would be a good idea to make one as soon as you can, just to be on the safe side.
Have you tried a Safe Boot?

If it doesn't work, probably there's a logic board problem, so it's possible that you need a new logic board. Take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller -

I have an iMac and a Macbook Pro. Downloaded Mountain Lion. Could no longer send mail messages. Checked my Mail preferences and they were correct. Icalled my ISP and they tried to help make it work by setting some new preferences Did not work. Took Mac Book Pro into ISP to see if they could remedy the problem. They could not. Still cannot send messages. The only thing I did from when mail could send mail and when it could not was to download Mountain Lion on to both computers. Help!
Just realised that with the SSL checked in the smtp set up, password authorisation is required and is put in the box immediately under the SSL checkbox, which is under the port(s) being used. Can now send mail:)

Mac Book Pro 17 inch to 23 inch display blue screen freezes.
Can any one help me, my mac book pro 17 is freezing when I connect it to my 23 inch apple cinema display. It works perfectly on stand alone, but once I connect the 23 cinema it toggels back and forth from blue screen on both screens then freezes, then works fine for a couple of hours. I sleep the system then when it wakes it freezes. I have disconnect the display then reconnect, this is really annoying.
No, you can't upgrade the GPU on a MaBook Pro - it's soldered onto the logic board.
