Mac Book Pro for photography

I've never used a MAC before, I am going to university to study photography, I've been recommended to buy a Mac Book Pro.
1) Can you get a simpler version of Mac to use for beginners...or is it easy to pick up from using a computer?
2)What requirements will I need for the subject photography using this computer?
Please help if you any of you know reply asap very important!!
Thanks

Geraldine,
Macs are very popular in the graphic and creative arts. As they say, once a Mac user, always a mac user. There's no difference in terms of learning with a "simpler" Mac versus a "pro" Mac. Same core software in the operating system. In photography, the issue is more what software do you plan to use? Photoshop is pretty basic. You might also find yourself using Apple's Aperture or Adobe Lightroom as well. These programs will not run well on just a MacBook. The MacBook Pro is really your best choice for a portable. I've read that people are running pro photography programs on the least costly 2.2 Ghz MBP without much issue. I use a 2.4 MBP with the stock 2 GB of RAM and programs run fine, though I'll probably increase that to 4 GB sometime soon. Don't buy extra RAM from Apple, get it from a third party source. Since you'll be going to university, be sure to use your ability to buy academic versions of software either from your university computer store or Apple's online store. Same for the computer actually and you can save a couple of hundred bucks.
Ultimately, you'll be happy you got the MacBook Pro once your into your studies processing images.
Best of luck,
Rick

I clicked on a link in an email that may be spam/phishing.  How can I scan my mac book pro for viruses?

You can just download the free ClamXav and scan your entire drive - but as there are no known viruses for OS X (although there is malware - see Thomas Reed's excellent Mac Malware Guide) it's very unlikely that you have a virus.
The best source against malware is OS X itself and common sense. Don't click on links in suspicious emails and be careful of anything that wants to install something on your computer that is not from a reputable source.

    • Only if your video camera supports it.  Depending on how your camera works, you may need to add preview software to your Mac to use this feature.
    • Alternatively, your camera may also be able to record directly into your Mac while you are monitoring the Mac's display.
    • If you are using a consumer camcorder that supports HDMI monitoring, a small HDTV might be an simpler solution than your Mac.  For an example of how this is done, see http://youtu.be/GVpSkZD6qE4.
    • The retailer who sold you your video camera may have other suggestions.
    • If you need more professional results, an external preview monitor will offer more capability on compatible cameras.

my  confusion is that shall i consider the APPLECARE PLAN....the plan is almost 20% of the laptops cost....Will spending so much money be worth it

Like any other insurance, it's only worth it if you have a problem.  I've purchased it on my "high risk" Macs and not purchased on the others.  So far I've never needed it.

  • Mac Book Pro for school. What do I need?

Hi, i want to buy a mac book pro for school(grade 10 academic) and for general amusement. I will be doing graphics(got adobe cs5.5) video editing, word processing and surfing the web. I am leaning towards the 17" MBP but for portablility i may get the 15". Since i will be taking it to school i dont know if i should pick the solid state vs. the regular 500GB. My main questions are: What hard drive? What should i put in my bag along with some books and writing utensils? Does anti glare make a big diference? 2.2GHz or 2.3 GHz? What programs are a must have?
P.S. this is my first mac and i do not mind price so much i just want what makes sence. For example if there is no NEED for a solid state then i will not get it.

Why bring the discs with me? I agree on the chord but is it worth $80? Definately the Manual!
You need spare bootable copies for troubleshooting.  It's rare, but what are you going to do if at some point while away from home (where your original discs are) you start having problems?  You will have no DVDs to run AHT or even to run the repair disk option.
If you accidently delete an "Apple" app.  You need the Install DVD to custom install.
The above are just small examples of why you need to carry bootable copies.  The original DVDs should be kept in a safe place at home.
The System DVDs are machine specific.  Therefore, you cannot borrow someone elses system DVDs to troubleshoot your MBP.
I purchased an extra Magsafe to keep inside my computer carrying case.  I felt why should I use the "home" one?  I would be SOL if something happened to it while using it away from home.  My MBP is older than yours.  The Magsafe was no where near $80.

Getting photos off the phone? Use iPhoto or Image Capture (in your Applications Folder)
Getting Photos on to the Phone? Use iTunes.

I have had my mac book pro for about a year and a half and suddenly my dvd player will not play DVDs and i can not play alot of things on full screen. Does anybody know how i can fix this?

This could be several things, but let's get the obvious ones out of the way, first:
    1. Judging from your text, there's no problem with anything stuck in the mechanism; it's more an issue of no being to put in a disk. In other words, you're sure that there isn't a disk stuck in your MBP. (That happens a lot for all computers.)
    2. Go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility, and repair the disk. This should take under 10 minutes.
    3. Perform the procedure outlined here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?
    4. After you're done, leave a message here as to the status of the repair.

  • Clean mac book pro for sale

how to clean a mac book pro for sale

Before you sell or give away your computer, in addition to the steps listed in this support article, take these steps:
    1. Run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test. The buyer will do this (or he should), and you don't want to be surprised by the results.
    2. Reset the PRAM and the SMC, which might contain personal information.
    3. If you set a firmware password, remove it by running Firmware Password Utility in Recovery mode.
    4. If you activated FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, turn it off.
    5. If you use Boot Camp, the partition must be deleted.
    6. If you created any other data partitions on the internal drive, remove them in Disk Utility.
    7. If the machine has an internal hard drive, erase the one remaining data partition with the option to zero out data. An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You can't legally or practically transfer any software downloaded from the Mac App Store to the new owner of the machine, even if it was free. That includes OS X, so if you upgraded to OS X 10.7 or later, you must reinstall an older OS, either from the installation media, if applicable, or by starting up in Internet Recovery mode (option-command-R at the startup chime.) If you installed from physical media, deliver those to the new owner.
If you're selling the machine, or donating it in working order, and it originally shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, then you have the option of installing either from the discs that came with it or from a retail Snow Leopard disc (which you must then transfer to the buyer.) The buyer should understand that if he doesn't get the original discs from you, he won't get the bundled iLife applications or the Apple Hardware Test. Replacements for the original discs can be ordered from Apple.
The new owner will have to redownload any software that came from the App Store, including OS X upgrades, under his or her Apple ID. If you ever updated the bundled iLife applications (Garage Band, iMovie, and iPhoto) through the App Store, you can't transfer those either. The buyer will have to purchase them.
Remove the machine from your list of registered products. If it's still covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, transfer the coverage to the new owner by following the instructions in the AppleCare Terms and Conditions (under the heading "Transfer of Plan.")

I think that an acceptance letter from any university would entitle you to a university discount.
You may want to check with the Apple site in Australia.

  • I can't sync my iPhone with iOS5 with my Mac Book Pro for Wi-fi.

I can't sync my iPhone with iOS5 with my Mac Book Pro for Wi-fi. The message error is: that's not compatible or something like this. But in the iPhone and the video of iOS 5 says that this it's possible. What can I do? Thanks for helping

Might be easier to post numbers so other people with exact same settings can compare directly.  Also helps to post screenshots before and after getting the error.

  • What is the other category on my mac book pro for hard drive space on how do I improve on it

What is the "other" category on my mac book pro for hard drive space? I found out that it is taking a whole lot of my computer's space...how do I find what it is and optimize it?

If you need to remove files for space see The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing space on your hard drive. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
Under no circumstances should you try deleting files outside of your Home folder.

You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.

  • Mac book AIR or Mac book PRO for Autocad light user

Mac book air or mac book pro with autocad?
Hello everyone, i am trying to decide wheter to buy a Mac book AIR 13 inch or the mac book PRO 13 inch. I am an architech switching from office to MAC, and i am a light user of AUTOCAD.
in AUTOCAD I only use 2d, i dont use any 3d or modeling or rendering in Autocad, i only use simple drawing features of autocad.
I dont want to buy a 15 " because it is much heavier, i carry my laptop around all (i have a back problem, so the AIR would be amazing, but i dont know if it would run smoothly
    So my 2 choices are:
    1) AIR: 13" 1.7ghz dual core intel i5, 4gb, intel hd graphics 3000, not sure if 128gb or 256gb hard disk
    2) PRO: 13" 2.3 ghz, dual core intel i5, 4gb,  intel hd graphics 3000, 320gb
    Thanks for you help!!

My preference is the Pro because there are more port options with the MBP.

  • Is incredible , i can repair my mac book pro for the graphic schedule

I can't believe , is impossible to repair my mac book pro sn W87100M2W0L, BECOUSE IS VINTAGE AFTER 5 yers, hope the Apple give me a solution, i'm worry, and if isn't possible to repair i close with Appke and all the products who i have, sorry for my english.

You don't provide much to go on, however, it sounds like you have a video issue with your MBP and Apple has told you it can't repair it, due to it's age?   If that's the case, used logic boards are available for purchase, and an Apple Authrorized Service Provider should be able to install it for you.
