Mac Book Pro gone dead...

Hi,
Was sitting reading my email when I turned away for 10 secs to talk to someone. Looked back and saw a black screen. Since then I have tried everything to get it to boot up but not a spark...
Called Apple and they asked me to take battery out and try with power cable only etc and still nothing. He advised that I take to a local store for a checkup. I personally think it may be more than a checkup/tuneup as suggested. Now I am heading to the local Mac store to see what they say. I am very disappointed.

Well, it can't be all that bad. If indeed it is a bad problem, sure, you might lose a lot of your important files. But look on the bright side. If it is an Apple problem, and the computer can not be salvaged, then (assuming you still are on a warranty) your computer will be replaced with a new one, maybe even a better one.

  • My Mac book pro is dead and the local authorised service center is screwing me. They are asking me almost the cost of a Mac for repairing it. What should be done?

My Mac book pro which is just one and half years old got dead suddenly. My Protection plan got over and the local authorised service center says the logic board is dead and it has to be replaced. The cost for the same which they are telling is Rs.47500 and another Rs.30000 for the display. Its really sad that a new Mac book pro is costing only Rs65000 in the Indian Market. Please help....I have saved lot of money to buy this Mac and its very sad that it goes off in less than 2 years time.

No one here can do anything to help you.

  • 2006 Mac Book Pro 17" dead keyboard trackpad

I was really unhappy that my barely used MBP 17" keyboard and track pad died last week, had no doubt Apple would say new logic board for $1200. Or some expensive, half the cost of the machine repair after so little use.
Instead the Genius in Pasadena listened and understood that the machine was in virtually new condition and nothing I did caused the failure and even noted that I obviously took incredible care of it.
So the deal was they send it out for repair and I pay a flat rate which was very low, no mater what they find wrong - this has absolutely reformed my opinion of Apple after having a variety of problems with or Mac Pro's and ordering a new MBP 17". Previous experience was impersonal, "it must your fault" expensive repairs and the only response was "shoulda bought Apple Care".
Now they clearly have a more understanding, effective policy and are being fair about common failures on early models, that are premature or clearly not the users fault.
I was going to cancel my MBP 17" order but I am glad to keep it now - but I think I will buy Apple Care this time.
Does anyone know if Apple Care covers the logic board replacement? Thats what has gone bad for us a few times and I called to ask Apple but the rep was not sure. I can't understand why I hear people say Apple Care doesn't cover all repairs - according to the agreement it does if not from abuse.
Just want to be sure before I add it.
    Sorry the long post!

Apple answered for me, is covered.

If you purchased you MBP in November 2012, you still are under the warranty.  I see these as you options:
Find a repair facility locally.  Since Apple does not show a telephone number for Korea, I do not know if there are any Apple resellers or AASPs available.
You could contact Apple in countries close by and see if you can ship the MBP there.  I do not know what be involved with the logistics.
    Contact Apple in the USA.
Here are the phone numbers from the Apple web site:

  • Mac Book Pro Dead - Completely Unresponsive

First to give a little background info - my Mac Book Pro is 13 months old - I missed the Apple Care Deadline by a week due to a mistake on my part. Upon purchase I received 3 faulty machines prior to this one. I had put the deadline in my calendar based on when I got a functional machine, rather than my purchase date - my fault. I tried to beg Apple Care for mercy a mere 2 days after my actual deadline and just got passed from associate to associate until one would finally just disconnect me. (This happened 3 times).
On to the saga of last night. I'm working at home, running iTunes, Mail, and Photoshop. I'm working on a layout in Photoshop - nothing very taxing on the system at all. The only things connected to the machine were the power adapter and my Wacom tablet. As I was editing a photo, all of a sudden the computer just shut off. There were no beeps, no pops, no cracks, nothing. Just dead, gone, nothingness. I feared the worst immediately due to the no Apple Care. Unfortunately, I fear even more than my initial fears were accurate.
I'm writing this post to see if anyone has experienced anything similar and has come up with a solution. I've searched the forums but don't seem to find anything but the random shut off issue (which this doesn't seem to be as those systems would at least reboot).
    So far I've tried:
    1) removing the battery, and powering up using only AC power
    2) resetting the PMU
    3) leaving it over night without power connected and the batter removed and then re-connecting to AC power
Nothing has produced any results at all. Any help/advice is appreciated. I have a feeling that I'm pretty screwed as it seems like a power issue or a fried logic board - neither of which sound like cheap repairs.
    Thanks much.
    Andy

Well, no official word yet, however there I do have news to report. The Genius at the Apple Store (Michael @ Ridgedale Mall, MN) was VERY helpful and reassuring that he didn't think it was a huge issue. He doesn't think its a logic board or anything that in depth - his initial thoughts were that a wire simply came loose and thats why it will charge, but we get no activity when the power button is pushed.
I also explained to him about my fiasco with even getting this machine in the first place (this is my 3rd machine - first two arrived damaged out of the box), and they had it on record that I had tried to buy apple care within the year time frame of when I actually received the satisfactory model (this one). Plus the fact that this is no where near my first Apple purchase and that ALL of my other products have AppleCare plans.
He gave me some pointers and told me to call AppleCare today and explain the situation, explain that I'd been misinformed from various channels, etc. Well it worked, and I now have AppleCare on the machine as of today.
I should know what repair is needed in the next day, and hopefully have the machine back early next week.
Needless to say this experience once again renewed my faith in Apple and the support they offer loyal customers.

Entourage is a third party app so stop down to the Microsoft support forums. In any case I would suspect in its preferences there would be a selection as to when (parameters) incoming mail should be deleted from the server.

Yesterday I had the same problem with itunes: I downloaded the last version (it's free), but I cannot do the same with iphoto, and more important: I need to know what is happening!!! Please help me!

If they are then that coud indicate serious problems with your hard drive.
Backup everything up as quickly as possible.

What is your Machine ID?  DO NOT give us your serial number.  We just need the x and y values of the Machine ID in your system profiler as given in this format:
    MacBook Pro x,y
This will tell us what display cables can connect to your TV.

  • MAC BOOK PRO WILL NOT START- COMPLETELY DEAD!

I forgot to power down my mac book pro last night. I closed the lid & forgot to go back & turn it off completely. This morning it will not power up. The machine is completely dead.
The power supply wasn't connected overnight so I assume the battery has completely drained. It's been charging for the last 2 hours (which would normally have fully charged it) but the light on the power cord is still showing green so I assume it's still charging, however there should be plenty of juice in the battery to start the computer but it still won't start.
Any ideas how to get it started?

A dead battery will take longer to start charging, but leave it on and eventually it will start to charge again.
Once you get it charged, perform a SMC and PRAM reset

  • Yosemite update, MAC Book Pro early 2008 - Dead like. Overheated, Blank screen

Before 3 days I installed the latest updated for Yosemite. After the update, I make the laptop “sleep”. But I noticed that while sleeping the power LED indicator behaved in a strange way. Also the laptop was very hot and after couple of hours of sleep, It count be powered on.
I pull out the battery and power cable to cool id down. After that is was OK.
This same scenario was repeating last 2 day, always while the laptop was off/in-sleep.
Now no the 3th day, I noticed the battery is drain out. Now it is fully recharged, but the Laptop want to power on.
After powering on, the Led indicator is glowing like (half-intensity) and noting happens. The screen is blank.
Can someone advise me, what to do?
    Some notes:
    ================
-The device is MAC Book Pro early 2008
-The battery is New, used for about 3 weeks, without problems
-I tried and alternative (old, original) battery, but it is the same. Which makes me think the problem isn`t in battery.
-It happened right after the Yosemite update.
-While sleep it was very hot
    -LED indicator behaves strange
Thank you for any advice or tip.

Sorry for the spelling I am dyslex.....
    I had this happen to.
For some unknown resin my 2.5Ghz MacBook Pro overheated and witch killed it.  Requires a new Logic Board.
    Resions for this diagnoses:
    1) The laptop was running  Sarfia in Yosemite before before I closed the lid.
    2) I did not take note that when I had put the laptop down it had not gone to sleep.
    3) When after 3 hours shopping, I picked the laptop up it was VERY! hot on the bottom (much hotter than it has ever been) (and it was not the battery)
    4) Before I got it turned off by pressing the power button the fans where running but not fast.
    5) I let it cool down before trying to turn it back on.
    6) I tried all the reset operations
    7) The disk drives (HDD and Optical) spin up and did the diags.
    What I don't know is:
    1) Why did not the thearmail shutdown not kick in?
    2) Why when I picked it up and it was clearly VERY HOT! the fans where not running fast?
    3) If the OS was doing something (update while asleep)?
    4) If the OS was doing something how and why did it stop the fans spinning fast to keep the laptop cool.
Sadley I now have to shell out for a new Logic Board.

Mail has gone crazy. Header's and messages are mixed up. New Mac Book Pro. Migrated files from Time machine running snow leopard. Reinstall or new computer needed?

Ok; I'm not sure what you're doing.    36 hours is rather long.  Seems like a new migration.  Not what I intended.
Here's what I intended: from the newly-migrated and apparently-corrupt environment, create a new user, not related to any existing user, nor any migration-created user, or any other user for that matter.  That is, use  > System Preferences > Users and Groups, authenticate yourself by clicking on the padlock, and then click the + and create a wholly new user.  Then log in under that user and establish the mail access.
36 hours?  I'm wondering if there's an error or an exceedingly slow network here?  Or a really, really slow disk?  Or a sick backup?  (WiFi isn't the path I'd usually choose, either.)
Failing the attempted second migration, I'd try a different tactic.  Does your existing (old) system work?   If so, I'd bypass the backup and connect an external (scratch) USB disk drive to the (old) sstem and then boot and use Disk Utility booted from the installer DVD disk or boot and use Disk Utility from the recovery partition or booted from a recovery partition created on some other external storage (details here vary by the OS X version and what hardware you have), and perform a full-disk backup of your original internal disk to (scratch) external storage.  (Make sure you get the source and target disks chosen correctly here; copying the wrong way — from the scratch disk to your existing disk — will clobber your data!)  In esssence, this will clone your existing boot disk.  Then dismount the (formerly-scratch) external disk, transfer it over to the new system, and use it as the source of the migration, by performing a fresh OS X installation on the new system.
Target Disk Mode is also sometimes an option for accessing the disk for a migration, but that requires the right cable, and requires systems that have the same external connection; newer MacBook Pro systems use Thunderbolt for this, and older systems tend to use FireWire.  And I'm guessing you don't have compatible hardware.
The details here can and do vary by your OS X versions and your particular Mac systems — if you'll identify the specific models and hardware, somebody might be able to better tailor the above (fairly generic) sequence to your particular configuration.

I have an old Mac book pro which had hundreds of photos in iphoto. recently bought a new mac book air. now my iphoto library on the old mac book is gone!!!!

now my iphoto library on the old mac book is gone!!!!
How did you search for the iPhoto Library?
What do you mean by "is gone"?  Is the iPhoto Library missing from the Pictures folder?  Or does iPhoto launch and show and empty library, and you assume, that the library is missing?
Which version of iPhoto is installed on your old Mac?
Search with Find Any File for iPhoto Libraries -  download Find Any File here: The trial is free:
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.htmlhttp://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.php
You can search everywhere with FindAnyFile, where Spotlight will not search.
I learned this  from Old Toad , see his post here:
Re: My iPhoto Library disappeared...how do I get it back?
Download and run Find Any File to search for a file with "ThumbJPGSegment" in the file name. These are files common to all versions of  iPhoto libraries.
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If there's a library hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it.
