Mac Book Pro locks up after initial boot-up

I have a late 2011 Mac Book Pro, 2.4 GHz running OS X 10.9.2.  During normal operations I am typically using  4-5 GB of RAM.  I have a 750 GB hard drive with 671 GB of free drive space.  After a normal boot-up the computer completely locks-up/freezes and I get the pin wheel indefinately.  I have tried the following items so far in an attempt to rectify the issue:
1) Reset NVRAM
2) Verfied that the issue remains with and without external keyboard, mouse, network cable and thunderbolt display attached.
3) Verfied that there is no disk in the optical drive.
4) Started up via the Recovery drvie and ran all disk utilities (repair disk, verify disk, and repair permisisons).  Both repair disk and verfiy disk came back without any issues noted.  Repair premissions came back with some iBooks errors that it said it fixed.  This has not corrected my problem.
5) Resinstalled the entire OS from the disk utility in Recovery Mode.  This seemed to correct my problem for almost a week but the same issue started happening again.
It should be noted that this issue started within a day or two of loading the 10.9.2 update.  The machine appears to run fine from Safe Mode, which I am using now to write this message.  I was also able to use Safe Mode to run a web conference at work this morning with out any additional issues so I can't believe it is a hardware issue.
Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well I ran it from safe mode and these are the results:

  • Mac Book pro locks up after pressing restart button at login.

I have a MacBook Pro, and I was just logging into my computer when I decided instead of putting my password into the login screen I clicked the back button, I then proceeded to press the restart button from the login screen to restart my computer, but then the courser disappears and the screen starts to darken slowly, (and not from the monitor's lights dimming), from top to bottom. A gray message pops up with a picture of a mac power button behind it and typed in all different languages it says, "Please hold down the power button for a few seconds to shutdown your computer." or something like that. I am sure it is an official message from apple and I have had this before but I think this is a major bug that apple might have missed or maybe I just haven't heard of the solution yet. BUT IT ONLY HAPPENS WHEN I ATTEMPT TO RESTART FROM THE LOGIN SCREEN. If anyone is having this same problem I would like to hear about it or if you have any suggestions on how to fix this issue that would be great, Thanks.
PS: This error does not seem to affect my friends mac book.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

    sonjadg,
you can purchase a replacement pair of grey installation DVDs for your MacBook Pro from either Apple or iFixit. If Startup Manager is only showing an OS X Installer volume, then it sounds like the Mavericks installer had a problem midway through its installation process. To fix this, you’re going to need to erase your internal disk and reïnstall your original version of OS X from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD, use Software Update  to get it back to 10.6.8 (presuming that your MacBook Pro originally came with Snow Leopard), and then restore from Time Machine.

  • Since updating to Mavericks my mac book pro locks up about 3 to 4 times a day, only way to recover is a hard reboot

Since updating to mavericks my mac boook pro locks up 3 to 4 times a day, the only way to recover is to hard reboot the system.  This started 2 days ago - about 15 days after upgrading.  All teh apps are visible just can't do anything with them.

Please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

  • Mac Book pro 13 A1278 late 2009 boot but no screen

Mac Book Pro 13 late 2009, boot on 10.5.8 fine but there is no screen light, just black, webcam work fine. When I plung a external screen it is working fine, i have the desktop and so.
Why ? I pulled off the motherboard after a water (tap) splash. At this time the key board was crazy. I unplunged the video cable of course. I cleaned and reinstalled every thing. So now the Key board works fine except for two keys at left hand ; ALT AND CTRL but no screen. The water came directly on the video cable area and the cable have a fiber cover. I cleaned with contact cleaner. But nothing to do. Curiusly the monitor Pref seems detect the computer screen because it is list in the menu Icon on the finder.
I looked on internet It seems to by a lot of video cable to sell. It is because there are fragile ?

Either you display or the connection to the display is damaged.  For a definitive assessment, take it to an Apple store genius bar for a free evaluation.
    Ciao.

  • When updating to the latest OS X my wife's Mac Book Pro locked at a grey screen with an apple icon and status bar.  Is there any way to recover the data on the laptop and complete the OS install?

When my wife's Mac Book Pro was being updated to the latest version of OS X the laptop locked up at a grey screen with the Apple icon and status bar.  Is there any way to recover the data and complete the install?  I have not tried anything yet because of the data issue.  I am not sure which OS X version as I did not install the software.

Used Macs of every description are always available on Ebay and Craigslist and from a plethora of online used-Mac resellers. Apple sells refurbished late-model Macs at 10-20% discounts with a new-computer warranty and the opportunity to extend the warranty with AppleCare.

If that doesn't take care of it, try the suggestions in this Apple article -> iOS: Troubleshooting applications purchased from the App Store
