Mac book pro makes noise like a lawn mower

every now and then my mac book pro starts to make a noise that resembles the sound of a lawn mower in the neighborhood coming through the open window.this lasts about 5 minutes, then the book is back to normal.
can i stop this somehow?do i have to be concerned?

You might download the widget "iStatPro" from the Apple site and look at it when the noise occurs. See what your fans are doing, and see if you can associate the noise with the fans and the internal temperature of your computer. The fans in my MBP idle at around 2000 RPM. If yours do the same, run at about the same speed, and then speed up for a while if the temperature goes up, then they are probably working as they should. You could post back with some actual speeds and temperatures if you want to verify that what you are experiencing is normal.
If, however, the fans are operating at very different speeds, or one isn't operating at all and the other is going very fast, then you could have a problem with either a fan or a thermal sensor. If you think you might, run the Apple Hardware Test--it will give you an error message if there is a problem.
If it turns out that the noise is not associated with fan speed, then I would start to worry about the possibility that it might be coming from the hard drive, and back up all your data ASAP. And post back or call Apple if you're under warranty.
Good luck!

  • My Mac Book Pro makes noises

Does anyone know if it is normal for a mac to sound like a motorboat? It's not as loud as a motorboat... but it has the same general type of sound. I guess a better way to describe it is a little more than a constant purr. Any ideas?

    No it is not normal.
Is the "sound" coming from your fans or HD? For fan noise see the following KB Article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 Apple Portables: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

Serial numbers for older versions do not work across platforms.
At one time, when the product was current, you could get Adobe to switch you to the other platform, but I don't know whether Adobe will do that for old versions.  I do know it's not going to work if you try to use your Windows license for a Mac installation.

  • Mac book pro making noise,we deleted most programs noise persists

Mac book pro has been making noise for some time,we deleted many programs that might affect it.Still problematic.Thoughts?

Noise makers on a MBP are the fan(s), hard drive and DVD drive.  Run an Apple hardware test and see if it picks up any problems:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
Open the MBP and see if there is and dirt or debris inside, particularly in the fans.  If so, clean it out.
If no success on the afore mentioned, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a free evaluation.
    Ciao.

  • Late 2011 Mac book pro fan noise

  • Mac Book Pro  doesn't like my iTunes choices? HD Spinning out of sync

Started my iTunes library and have been loading in over 100+ CD's. Now I have a very loud constand whirring sound, comming from the area just below the power button. If I put pressure on and around the power button compressing the whirring disc, the  sound becomes less intense and has also actually ceased, however it does appear again.  I'm thinking bad hard drive, but I don't know.  The Mac had memory boosted about a month ago, and is a 2008 model.

In every MBP, the hard drive is in one of the front corners under the wrist rest, not back near the power button.
The only moving parts in a MBP that can ever make the kind of noise you describe are the optical drive, the fan(s) and the hard drive. If your optical drive is empty and you're sure the sound originates nearer to the back of the computer than the front, it's a fan.

  • Reporting of the Mac Book Pro whining noise issue - how?

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro is emitting a noise when the processor is idle. It's got all the updates and the problem did not go away.
I was looking at the Apple Support site and could not seem to find a place to report this issue. Any idea where I should go?
    Thanks,
    Tom

You may want to call Apple customer care and explain your problem. It is recognized now by Apple and they are issuing logic board updates.
Some people report having more success by going to a brick and mortar Apple store and making an appointment at the Genius bar though.
    It is really your choice.

  • I have a new Mac Book Pro, and just like my last Mac, I somemtimes cannot open emails, or delete emails, w/Firefox. Plus the browser along with the Hotmail Browser is very slow. At first I thought it was the old Mac. But not so. Ideas?

To free up hard drive space the best bet is to move data files that you don't need access to all the time. Likely candidates are music, video, and photos. Things like word processing and spreadsheet files can also be moved but they tend not to be very large and so don't free up much space. The problem with moving the above mentioned files is that iTunes and iPhoto need to know where the files are stored.
Here's an article explaining how to move the iTunes folder. You can move the iPhoto library using the Finder but there is a slight complication. Start iPhoto, open the Preferences and click on the Advanced tab. The first option is "Copy items to the iPhoto Library". If this option is checked, copy the iPhoto library to your external folder (drag it from the Pictures folder to your external drive) and then delete it from your Picture folder. If this option is not checked, it is a bit more complicated and we'll need to talk a bit.

  • I have a Mac Book Pro with OSX 10.6.8 and I want to export the bookmarks from Safari into Firefox 7.0.1?

Safari is version 5.1 on my Mac Book Pro.

Make sure that you are not running Firefox in permanent [[Private Browsing]] mode.
    * You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Firefox > Preferences > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
    * To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Firefox > Preferences > Privacy, choose the setting '''Firefox will: Use custom settings for history'''
    * Deselect: [ ] "Permanent Private Browsing mode"
Check if any Downloads are in progress. Wait for them to complete or cancel the downloads.

    -> [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
Check and tell if its working.
