Mac Book Pro Media keys no longer work

Hi,
I installed a third party 'mac' keyboard that has media keys, Volume, Play pause etc...
Now, my MBP keyboard's keys dont work.. Brightness, Volume, backlight are all unresponsive.
Is there a package i can install that will reset them?

Hi Phil, welcome to the discussions!
I'm not sure if this is the problem but if you go into the system preferences, click keyboard & mouse and then click the keyboard tab, there is an option there that says, "Use the F1-F12 keys to control software features." If this option is ticked, you will have to hold the Fn key whilst pressing the F1/F2 keys to change brightness. The media keyboard installation may have changed this for you.

  • My Mac Book Pro suddenly will no longer connect to the Internet at my house. Help?

My Mac Book Pro suddenly will no longer connect to the Internet at my house. My son's MacBook connects just fine. My MacPro connects at work, at Starbucks, etc. just fine, but not at my house. My son's however has no problem whatsoever. I assume that since his computer connects that the router and modem is not the problem. And since my computer connects everywhere but here . . . . it is not a hardware issue. When directly connecting my MacBook Pro to the modem or router the problem was the same. . . no connection. Help?

    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ About This Mac
Below the "OS X" legend in the window that opens, the OS version appears. Click the version line twice to display the serial number. If the number is missing or invalid according to this web form, take the machine to an Apple Store or other authorized service center to have the problem corrected.

  • Mac Book Pro heating up and fans working continuously

    Hi,
This is my second Mac Book Pro, the first one "died" because of heating issues and only after an overhaul from the Mac Store, it worked again, but never the same, so I went to the Mac Store to get another one.
I purchased this one on March 2009 and three days ago it started heating up and using the fans constantly, consuming my battery very fast and making the annoying noise these little fans make. Not to mention the heat above the function keys is way beyond normal (normal: not burning your fingers when touching it for a couple of seconds).
Having had a bad heating experience with a previous Mac, I am freaking out now. Any advice on what should I look at before going to a Mac Store?
I don't use any games or very sophisticated software, basically Office, Firefox and iTunes with movies and everything included.
Here are some of my Mac's specs.
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 6 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
    Thank you very much indeed,

Well it looks like there's a printer driver that is monopolizing your CPU. Do you have a Lexmark printer that you use? If so, here's a few things to try:
Download the latest print drivers for Lexmark and install them:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL901
Open Print & Fax in System Preferences and delete your Lexmark printer. Then hit the "+" symbol and add the printer back. That will let it install the new drivers.
If that doesn't work, check out the response by "Pitch64" near the bottom of this thread:

  • HT1751 How do I move my entire iTunes library from my iomega hard drive to my new Mac Book Pro?  I no longer want to keep my music on the external drive.

Because of a lack of enough memory on my old Mac Book, I put all my music on an external hard drive.  Now that I have a new Mac Book Pro with lots of memory, I want to move the music onto this new computer but I haven't been able to yet.  I tried the migration assistant but that didn't work.  Any suggestions?

I may sound like a real rookie here, but on my new MacBook Air there isn't a "Pictures" folder under "Users/kendallwilson" like there used to be on my old MacBook Pro (Early 2011). I'm still working out the new software on my MB Air, so where exactly should I open this new window to start following the steps you just provided me.
    Thanks again!

harminder@apple  -  any luck?    Try this,  open Finder and  press command-shift-G and copy and paste:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Skype
In this Skype folder: delete the file shared.xml  and restart Skype.
    See if this helps.

  • Help- Mac Book Pro built in speakers wont work.

Hi. I just turned on my Macbook Pro today and found something funny. My internal speakers will not work and when i try to use the volume keys the display comes up for volume but it has the do not enter icon. i plugged my headphones in to see if it worked and it did. i also noticed that there is a red light coming from my headphone jack when the headphones are not in it. Does anyone know how to get my speakers working again?? I looked at the help files and it says to make sure that internal speakers is checked in the : system preferences->sound->output. but all there is to check is: digital out.
Please help. Thank you very much

Check to make sure that digital out is NOT selected - your headphone port is also a optical digital audio port - hence the red light.
When you plug in headphones, your computer knows that there are headphones attached and routes the audio accordingly, allowing you to use the built in volume controls. When the audio out port is set to Digital Out, your MBP thinks that there is some other digital device plugged in (with its own volume controls) and so disables the MBP's internal volume controls and internal speakers.
If you have checked that Digital Out is not selected, you may want to try a permissions repair, and possibly a PRAM reset (Hold  + Alt + P + R when you restart your MBP - before the grey screen).
Someone with more experience of optical ports may have another solution - obviously there isn't anything stuck in the port, so it must be a software issue.

Sorry for choosing the wrong category.

Call AppleCare or take the computer to your local Apple service center. We can't fix hardware failures.

  • Microphone not working mac book pro..help?

Late 2010 model 10.6.8...my microphone has never worked and I've gone through all the regular easy steps and still no mic?  Any advice?

    Hi WebBrowser2,
As I understand your query its not a single doubt you are having at all, actually it’s a bunch of multiple doubt you are carrying here in your mind allied to Mac Book Pro (USB Ports are not working).  There might be various reasons behind- not working of USB ports in Mac Book Pro, as you already had searched out various ways to fix all your issues. A few months ago, I faced the same issue as my USB port was suddenly stopped to respond, then I also tried to find various ways to get rid of this issue, and I found an informative blog link which has fixed this issue and make me tension free.
For more information visit at- http://www.olmtopsts.com/blogs/when-macbook-pro-usb-ports-not-working.html
And I am hoping- it will assist you in the same way as it assists me.

  • If I need to wipe a 2006 17 in Mac Book pro, do I need to just purchase a retail copy of Snow Leopard?

Original disc is lost, I tried the disc for my 15 inch mac book pro, but it wouldn't work. As long as I buy a copy of Snow Leopard and run it I should be able to wipe the drive and reinstall the OS right?

Since the install DVD is actually part of the Mac and should be included with it when it is sold, you really should call Apple and order a replacement for it. Apple will charge you a nominal fee for shipping and handling.
Once you get the replace install DVD then you can erease the disk and reinstall Tiger.

  • Weird startup with Mac Book Pro

Have had a new Mac Book Pro since March, 2008. Worked fine until this evening. When I started it up, it showed the icon of a hard drive and nothing else for a bit. I clicked and it continued with the installation. I don't recall having seen that before on installation. I have OS 10.5.4, 2.4 GHz and keep other software updates current (nothing other than a word processor is extra than what came on the machine). That concerned me so I ran disk utilities - it took forever to even begin to go through the procedure. Mail also seemed to get hung up and I wasn't even able to force quit. Eventually, it seemed to "catch up" and mail worked fine. This concerns me - I couldn't find a similar problem
Thanks for any suggestions you can offer.
    Pat

When I started it up, it showed the icon of a hard drive and nothing else for a bit. I clicked and it continued with the installation.
Do you mean you had run an update and it restarted to finish installing the update? Or do you mean that it didn't want to boot up until you selected the drive? If the latter, it could be that it simply lost the startup drive preference. Go to System Preferences->Startup Disk and make sure your regular boot drive is selected.
And yes, running repair permissions takes a LONG time to check the database until it finally starts actually doing the repairs, especially compared to the way things worked in Tiger. As long as it actually finished you should be fine.

  • Mac Book Pro start up, Mac Book Pro start up

My Mac Book pro is taking very long ot start up sometimes getting to home but then not loading anything else. it is a late 2011 model with Mavericks and about 4 years old now. i cant enter safe boot for some reason which is very annoying but cant reset PRAM. any thoughts on how to get it to work? it wont boot up after a crash the second time this week, which is the only time iv ever crashed. the other time it just shut down due to a kernel error. any thoughts on how to fix this problem? thank you very much for your time.
