Mac Book Pro no operating system

Okay so I really need some help please!
I was locked out of my MacBook Pro, I had forgotten the password after not using it in a while. So I had asked a friend of mine to help me out, and to get back into the computer.
But now whenever I go to boot up my MacBook it comes onto the OS X recovery screen and it does not appear there is an operating system or anything on the computer. There is not even any back up in the Time Machine to reset the Mac.
Would I now need to buy an operating system for it? I tried signing in with my apple id, but it says I have not purchased any OS with this apple id?
So my question really is, how can I fix this and get back to using my computer? Will I need to buy Mountain Lion again or what? Please help, I have no idea what to do!
Please help
Thank you so much!

What OS version was on the MacBook?
What model MacBook?
When in Recovery, go to Disk Utility and ttry repairing the startup disk.
Do youhave the original DVD install diska of a retail install DVD?
You may have to purchase install media

    Could the disk have failed?
    Can you hear it?
Boot from the install DVD and see what Disk Utility says.

In order to repair the system disk you must boot from another disk drive. The operating system will not allow the disk drive it is running from to be repaired.
Book the MBP and create a bootable clone on an external disk drive. Then boot from the external disk drive and repair the system disk drive from there.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
I think that your Mac detects your hard disk, but the problem is that your new hard disk doesn't contain any operating system, so your Mac doesn't find any bootable partition and you see a question mark.
If your Mac came with DVDs, insert the Mac OS X Install DVD and hold the C key while your Mac is starting. Then, just install Mac OS X. If the hard disk isn't prepared to install Mac OS X, you will have to erase it using "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". See > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html

I have a mac book pro that i bought in late 2009. My current software is snow leopard version 10.5.8. I would like to get the new lion operating system but I cant without first getting the latest version of snow leopard. however when I go to update my software it doesnt show that any update is available.

    10.5.8 is Leopard, not Snow Leopard. You need the Snow Leopard DVD;
You can get it only by phone now from Apple.
In the US, call 1-800-MY-APPLE and ask for a sales assistant. Last quoted price was $19.99 for the single-user and $29.99 for the family licence.
For other countries, check here; http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
Don't forget to ask for Sales; the tech support guys can't help.
If you want Lion, rather than Mountain Lion, the same Sales team can give you a download code to use at the Mac AppStore.
To get the App Store, you need to update your new Snow Leopard from 10.6.3 (which is the version on the installer) to 10.6.8 with the combo update; http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Be warned that the upgrades will render a lot of older software unusable, and will need new drivers for printers and scanners in all likelihood.

  • Can i run multiple osx operating systems on my mac book pro?

hello, i was wondering if i can run multiple osx operating systems on my mac book pro? i currently have the latest version of lion but many of my applications require snow leopard to operate... thank you for any help.

The easiest solution is to partition your drive to provide a second partition on which you can install Snow Leopard. It need not be a large partition because you can still access applications on the other partition.
To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.

To reinstall the original OSX in your rMBP, boot the MBP using the COMMAND-OPTION-R keys.  The display should show a picture if the planet earth and you will be connected to the Apple servers.   Make certain that you have a solid Internet connection and follow the instructions.

  • I just bought a mac book pro - When setting up my computer it told me that there was an update on the current operating system and to install it - I did

I just bought a mac book pro - When setting up my computer it told me that I there was updates to my operating sytem - to install the updates. I installed them and then restarted my computer - But it still says that I have an update to do - which is the operating sytem one that I just did??? Do I still need to do something else.

    bschau1963,
sometimes updates have other updates as prerequisites, so one set of updates can lead to another set of updates. Unless it is asking you to apply the same update over and over again, you should probably accept the new set of updates that Software Update is offering.

Though it's unlikely to be wrong if things were set up properly in the first place, as a check go to Mail Preferences>Accounts and check that the server setting for IMAP (incoming) is imap.mail.me.com (not just mail.me.com).
Your next step either way would be to go to System Preferences>iCloud and sign out, then sign back in again. (You can ignore warnings about data disappearing - your calendars etc. will disappear when you sign out but reappear when you sign back in).

  • Hello all, i have just bought a mac book pro and when ever i connect my data card to access internet i get a warning to shutdown my system and at that time i cant operate anything else. please do suggest me on the above topic.

    hello all,
i have jus bougth a mac book pro, whenever i connect my data card to access internet i'm getting a warning saying " please restart your system by pressing the power button and switch on again". i can access for only few mins or secs then it again shows same warning. please do help me out with this problem.
    Thanking you.

    Hi,
i had same issue some years back. sure my operator was different from yours. unfortunatly some of these 3rd party products dont spend much effort on a mac. My one had half a dozent programs, for each version of OSX one. When i called them up the gave me the correct version which worked. You may have not the right one. May try first the MAC and ensure it works fine without the card and that software.

  • Early 2011 Mac Book Pro (MBP) problem with sporadic AMD GPU automated switching system

I have an early 2011 Mac Book Pro (MBP) - specs are listed below. I have read online about other 2011s having an automatic shutdown problem & sporadic failure re the graphics AMD Radeon HD 6490M GPU automated switching system (among other problems with this "innovation" by Apple). I am having this problem: Shuts down by itself. Restarts - in the middle of the restart shuts down again. Fans are operating just fine. The problem has occurred if a video is playing, if I try to edit a video. It has occurred while using Skype (if the other party puts on their video camera), Firefox & Safari & Google Chrome. It has occurred even if I was working in Word if I was connected to the internet. I am working in a developing country and I have done a PRAM SMC Disk Utility Repair disk had a diagnostic run which showed no problems, etc. There is no temporary fix. Apple now hear this: This is going to morph into a logic board problem and you still haven't done anything about it??? This is an APPLE defect and I am very disappointed in Apple not acknowledging this defect and fixing the problem or issuing notification of a recall. I am outside of Apple Care and I have never had a mac give trouble until the 5 year mark. A 2GB RAM white iMac I gave my Mom is still operating perfectly! I am in the middle of a  climate change mitigation project and a I cannot finish my work due to this problem and I cannot afford to pay for another MBP $2400 doorstop. What is going on here? Steve dies so there is no one to put the fear of God in anyone at Apple anymore and now no one cares  about customer service? Where is the product recall? I have been a loyal Apple customer since 1983. Yes, 1983. DO SOMETHING NOW APPLE & NOTIFY US OF IT - We all registered our computers on YOUR website so you know who we are. Has anyone filed a class action yet?

I had a 13" mid-2012 that had three logic boards fail in less than a year of purchase. My symptoms were it would freeze while using it or after it was put to sleep. When it froze while being used, it would flash pixels in groups in different colors and would become unresponsive to everything but forcing it to shut down. If it froze while sleeping, it wouldn't wake up and it would get extremely hot to the touch. Apple covered the repairs every time but they sent me receipts and each time, it was a $480 logic board plus labor so it would cost about $530 overall. It sounds to me it's your hard drive because I also experienced two hard drive failures. First time was from an accidental drop. I would get a loading bar on startup and once it finished, it would shut down. I couldn't boot into recovery mode at or do anything. But before that would happen, I would get an error in disk utility after performing a disk repair saying it couldn't repair the disk and to back up as much data as I could. Luckily I have the Time Capsule so my data was always safe.

The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.5 (Mavericks preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is now non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
To make use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mavericks, provided it meets the requirements.
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Lion is available in the Online Apple Store ($19.99). Mountain Lion (10.8.x) is also available there at the same price but there seems little point as the system requirements are the same for Mavericks (10.9.x) - which is free - unless you need to run specific software which will run on Mountain Lion only.
The requirements for Mountain Lion and Mavericks are:
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
      and the supported models are:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications).
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

My neighbour's Mac Book Pro shows up as discoverable in my Bluetooth list on my iPad Air.  How can I block her Bluetooth device? How can I prevent her pairing with my device?  I need Bluetooth to stream music on my Bose system.  Thanks!

If your device is discoverable, the other BT device would try (I am not sure if that would be successful). If it was, it would appear in your system preferences>Bluetooth.
Take a look at this re: security:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10786
This is from another Apple article:
    Use Bluetooth
You can wirelessly transfer files between computers—even Mac to PC—using the Bluetooth File Exchange utility. You can even browse selected devices and retrieve files remotely. For extra security, you can stipulate that only trusted devices be allowed to connect to your Mac, and 128-bit over-the-air encryption is also available
    Barry
P.S. Since I have not had the issue, I have not researched this before. Thank you for making me look into BT security
