Mac Book Pro on Mountain Lion HDD shows almost full when it is not

Hi,
I am using a MacBook Pro End 2011, with an HDD of 500 GB.
There is a partition on the HDD, and one side runs Mac, and the partition is for Windows 7 via Parallels (about 125 GB).
SInce about the last 10 days, my HDD shows only 10 GB of free space, and I think it should be having much more free space.
My data is about 105 odd GB, and the folder "Applications" shows about 7.5 GB used.
I fail to understand how the HDD can be out of space.
I tried using Disk Utility, and the option to "Repair".
While it runs and repairs some permissions, it says that some permissions cannot be replaired and that they have been modified, but the problem does not resolve.
Also , the machine feels a bit slower than before.
Help much appreciated.
Thanks, in advance.

  • My Mac Book Pro using Mountain Lion will show a usb headset with a mic to select in the settings window. But the Rosetta Stone software I am using will not find the mic for me to select and use. What should I do?

Mac Book Pro with OS X Mountain Lion will not recognize headset mic via Rosetta Stone software. What should I do?

    Hi Illaass,
I am using version 3. I have used the apple/settings on my mac. The headset is appearing there and it is selected there. In the Rosetta Stone select/find window nothing shows up. It is blank. But the volume bars react when I speak and sliding the fader has the expected effect of raising and lowering the input. There is just no device showing up as the selected input device in the Rosetta Stone software.
I have done everything my Mac instructions say to uninstall and reinstall the Rosetta Stone software properly.
I'm guessing the problem may be in the licensing. I installed it first on the old hard drive that crashed. Maybe that used the terms of the license and now installing it in the new hard drive violates the license somehow. So that's why it will not work properly. It allows me to open the lessons and asks me if I want to continue from where I left off. I click continue. Then it asks me if I want to register the software. I click the tab for already registered software and click continue. Then nothing happens. So again I click on the button that indicates I want to continue lessons from where I left off. The same process happens with it asking me if I want to register the software. And it will not proceed through a lesson.

  • Since updating my Mac Book Pro from Mountain Lion to Maverick the computer is running slowly. Its slow to open and slow to download

Hi since updating my Mac Book Pro from Mountain Lion to Maverick the computer is running slow

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • One of the users on my Mac book pro, running Mountain lion finds that no changes made in last session are there next time they log on

One of the users on my Mac book pro running mountain lion finds that no changes made in last session are there next time they log on.
For instance, the Macintosh HD icon, is always moved so that it is almost off the screen to top left hand side of the desktop.
None of my changes to the sidebar in the finder are there.
My changes to the dock have reverted.
Despite unticking the box when logging out, even though i have quit all applications, iphoto and safari are always re-opened.
iphoto always says the library needs to be upgraded... even though i did that the last time.
I have tried deleting ALL the files in the "Saved application state" folder in the library folder, but that doesn't seem to make any difference.
This is on a second admin user account.
The main user account seems to be fine.
This account used to be in the filevault on Lion, but is not now in Mountain Lion.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks

The same tragic thing happened to me, not even a full two days after I bought it. I immediately powered it off, wiped it as best I could, and put it in front of a fan. I tried valiantly to get the back off, but couldn't remove all the screws. I was basically inconsolable until I realized that no matter what, my credit card insurance would cover it, since it had been less than 90 days. Fast forward 48 hours, and it seemed to run just fine. Some of the keys and the track pad were sticky, and I figured since it was covered, I might as well get it fixed. My only concern at this point was had I voided the Apple Care. I brought it in, told them what happened, said what I needed to satisfy the credit card, and they said, "We'll just swap it out for you, no problem." I was thrilled, and the Genius said they appreciated my honesty, and it was easier for all parties to just do it this way. And my Apple Care was transferred to the new machine. This was my first Mac and, needless to say, I am now an Apple devotee.

  • I recently upgraded my Mac Book Pro to Mountain Lion mainly to get the notes app. Notes synced once then no more. I have notes turned on in system preferences. Any ideas? Is this a known issue?

  • Action initiated: Upgrade Mac Book Pro to Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.-, via Wi-fi. After 2 hours said could not install it. I tried again through Ethernet (cable). No success. Should I buy itagain? How this thing with the Apple store works? Not so familiar.

The OS X Mountain Lion I tried to download Wi-Fi on Mac Book Pro was not successfull. Should I buy it again? Should I check with Apple store for credit?
I successfully instaled it in iMac, but have problem with laptp. I also think I should not have bought 2 upgardes, becase if I have 2 computers, one paid upgrade is good for both computers. Am I wrong? SOmeone can advise how to proceed? I want to try again through Ethernet - cable internet - instead of Wi-Fi. Thank you

You should not have paid twice. If you logged into the App Store with the same AppleID as you used to purchase Mountain Lion the first time, you should not have been charged again.
If you internet connection is not working well enough to download it, do you have access to another network that might be faster? Perhaps and Apple Store nearby?

  • My Mac Book Pro using Mountain Lion goes to sleep unwontedly.

I am running long calculations on my Mac Book Pro and it keeps going to sleep after a few minutes. I have reset the energy saver to never, but it didn't change anything. I have gone into the security panel and reset the time to 5 hours, but that doesn't work either, what do I do?

  • Slow response on mac book pro and mountain lion

Over the past few months I have noticed that my MAC Book Pro is starting to act like a Windows machine. Freezing, slow response, Applications not responding, etc.
I have tried the typical HW reset, removing cache, added anti virus etc but if anything seems to be worse. Any suggestions?
4Gb RAM, 750G drive 170G used. Typically use Office 11 Powerpoint, Excel, Word, Outlook, Safari, Jabber, Chrome, WebEx.

  • Installing Windows 7 on my bootcamp partition (mid-2009 mac book pro with mountain lion) My computer won't boot from the Windows 7 Install DVD.

    Hello,
I have been trying to install Windows 7 on my macbook pro (mid 2009, MBP53). I have successfully created a bootcamp partition using the assistant. When the computer tries to boot from the windows 7 install dvd, the screen is just black. The dvd spins for a bit, then stops and the computer is just black (no blinking cursor).
Any advice would be very appreciated.
    Thanks.

What kind of an install DVD are you using for Windows?
You can use any DVDs that are hardware specific. Only the full non-hardware soecific DVDs work on the Mac.

  • Mac Book Pro 15" Mountain Lion 10.8 Intermittent WiFi

    Hello All
I know this is a well-discussed problem already but I'll try to provide relevant details to make this post not just another rant and run-around of solutions we already know.
Before ML Reinstall (not erase and install):
    - Intermittently Safari would stop loading and would say no internet connection
    - My WiFi would then say, after trying to reconnect, 'connection timed-out, cannot connect to AirBears' (our school WiFi name)
    - So I would try to reboot, reset SMC, reset PRAM
    - Then everytime: 'no hardware installed' when I click the WiFi radar icon in the menubar
    - I try to repair permissions, reboot, adjust network settings here and there according to whats floating around online (new location, MTU, DHCP, KeyChain)
    - Then by some random rhythmn and combination of things it would work, for a bit
    - I would get the same issues whether on school or home networks; observed for about 3-4 days
After ML Reinstall (not erase and install):
    - It was fine for about two days but only because I was using WiFi from my home.
    - As soon as I got on AirBears to start the week it came back after only two hours of use
    - Took to school technicians, they ran hardware tests and reset the PRAM and SMC only to resurface the 'no hardware installed' thing
    - They recommended I reformat my drive because its probably a tiny kink in the entire web of software(s)
    - I dont wanna do that, especially since TM would just slap that kinked code right back in there
    - Im at home now and its working fine
    My Comments:
    - AirBears (school network) seems to be a suspect
    - ML reinstall seems to have suprssed the problem (at least now i dont have the problem at home)
    - SMC and PRAM reset seems to induce this 'no hardware installed' problem which is resolved by rebooting
    My Questions:
    - How can I find out definitively if its hardware or software related? This seems to be a smart first step.

It's neither. The problem is enterprise IT. Either the router hardware they bought is junk or they have misconfigured it. I'm sure at some point they will offer to replace your Mac with a nice, plastic Lenovo.

Best to install them one at a time, re-booting between each one.
