Mac book pro or Mac pro

Ok, I'm looking at upgrading and all that fun stuff. I would like to get everyones opinion on if I should go with a MBP or a MP.
I'm torn, half of me wants the beast of a MP but the other half would like the portablity of the MBP. I use FCE3.5, most of the videos I work with do require alot of rendering since they aren't a native size. I also watch TV on my current machine using EyeTV.
FCE is my main application.
I know MP has better specs than the MBP.
Whats your opinion!

Hi(Bonjour)!
As a general rules:
-notebooks are less performant than desktop model.
-they cost more than a comparable (read: in performance term)desktop model.
-notebooks are more fragile than desktop model.
-they are almost impossible to upgrade on the hardware side.
-you can't use second internal hard drive dedicated to video editing process.
-Mac Pros are professional machine aimed to do large and demanding jobs.
-you can pack them with many hard drives, many RAM, upgrade the video card.
Yes, your first half want the portability and cool geek factor to own a mac to go, but your second half, the creative one, will do prefer the desktop model.
May be you can buy the cheapest Mac Pro with 2Go Ram and by a macbook on the refurb store (for the cool factor).

  • Mac book AIR or Mac book PRO for Autocad light user

Mac book air or mac book pro with autocad?
Hello everyone, i am trying to decide wheter to buy a Mac book AIR 13 inch or the mac book PRO 13 inch. I am an architech switching from office to MAC, and i am a light user of AUTOCAD.
in AUTOCAD I only use 2d, i dont use any 3d or modeling or rendering in Autocad, i only use simple drawing features of autocad.
I dont want to buy a 15 " because it is much heavier, i carry my laptop around all (i have a back problem, so the AIR would be amazing, but i dont know if it would run smoothly
    So my 2 choices are:
    1) AIR: 13" 1.7ghz dual core intel i5, 4gb, intel hd graphics 3000, not sure if 128gb or 256gb hard disk
    2) PRO: 13" 2.3 ghz, dual core intel i5, 4gb,  intel hd graphics 3000, 320gb
    Thanks for you help!!

My preference is the Pro because there are more port options with the MBP.

Unless you can set the Time Capsule's drive to have it's ownership ignored
you won't be able to use the library on the same volume as the Time Machine backups.

    hi,
    i have mac book 4,1 mac OS X 10.5.8
when i open iTunes i can't open, it's requied quicktime 7.5.5 so woh can i sort out this

    QuickTime 7.5.5 for Leopard - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL27
    QuickTime 7.7 for Leopard - http://support.apple.com/kb/dl761
= New version of Quicktime installed but application reports it needs to have that version installed =
Open Application > Utilities > System Profiler and check the Quicktime version in Frameworks vs. the version in Applications.  One person had re-installed their operating system.  It had kept the newer Player application but had reverted to an earlier version of the underlying support framework files which many applications utilize.  Re-installing Quicktime 7.7 took care of the problem.  Do this manually, not with Software Update.
Installation get stuck at "configuring installation" - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2592979?threadID=2592979  - uninstall Quicktime before installing.

  • Download windows support software for mac book air running Mac oS Lion.. too slow in bootcamp

    Hi guys,
Do you know a site which I could download the windows support software for my mac book air running MAC OSX Lion. Using bootcamp takes a very long time and seems to be stuck. Any help is highly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Whart exactly are you having problems with?
Installing Boot Camp, manually updating the B.C. Drivers, Apple software update updating the drivers, or Windows Software updates?
You will or have a full Windows install. _ALL_ Microsoft Windows software is through Microsoft or 3rd partys. Apple just supplies the drivers for their hardware to be run in Windows.
If you want to manually install the Boot Camp drivers then try here?:
    http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
Underneath the hardrive picture is a link for _Downloads_, it shows up as an error in my browser but when i put in "Boot Camp" in the "Search Downloads" bar I got a large list.
    Hope that helps.....

  • What are the exact differences betweern mac book air and mac book pro

I have not used mac book b4, and now I consider to buy a mac book. I am a college student and majoring in computer science. Can someone tell me what are the exact differences between MBP and MBA? I know the CPU in MBP is better than MBA and what else? Which one would you recommend me to buy? Waiting for your response. Thank you so much!

    This forum is
Apple Support Communities > Notebooks > MacBook Pro >   Discussions
So the question is relevant at least to the extent that it is asking for a comparison between a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air
MacBookAir definitely favors portability and sports a dual core i5 at 1.5GHz (max RAM is 4GB not user upgradable)
MacBook Pro  has upto a quad core i7 at 2.4GHz (ships with 4GB and upgradeable to as much as 16GB on some models)

  • Does Apple mac books supports STADD V8i.pro

Greetings friends, I am an undergraduate civil engineer and i am going to do my MSc n Structural engineering and I am using apple Mac book for about 6 months and like to know whether the MACBOOK SUPPORTS STADDV8I PRO ...  and i m totallu confused... help me out.. i dont know will it work propely or slows down.. graphical issues

i should be able to use all 12 cores
Using all the cores available is a Classic unsolved problem in Computer Science.
In general, very few Application Programs can do this, unless they have been hand-coded to do this. Some programs that are doing this are Ray Tracing, DVD-encoding, Frame Stress Analysis, Weather Forecasting or other Fluid Dynamics problems, or similar very specific Applications.
Almost everyone purchasing a 12-core computer is wasting their money unless they will be running such programs. The additional cores will simply not be used, regardless of what Operating System you are using.
For most Application Programs, a computer with fewer cores, but Faster is a better choice. These are more likely to be used and will always run at a faster speed when they do.
Most Users who are purchasing Macs are willing to pay the Premium Price to get the best User Interface there is on any computer, Mac OS X. If you expect to throw out Mac OS X, buy a less expensive Workstation-class computer from Dell or HP.

  • Installing Snow Lepard on Mac Book Air using Mac Book Pro

    Hello;
I have installed SL on my Mac Book Pro using a Family pack (with which I succesfully ugraded our third home Mac...); The issue I have is installing it on Mac Book Air; the remote DVD/CD reader link works fine (I can read the instructions on the CD on the Mac Air), but when I double click on the Install icon, nothing happens....
    Help!

    Hi Marc,
You can update the OS while booted to it. If you're running the installer from a disc image or mounted volume on your Desktop that's not going to work. When you go to use Remote Disc, did you enable it on your MacBook Pro and make sure both machines were connected to the same network?
It's a pretty straight forward process, where are you getting hung up on the Remote Installer?

  • I have Logic on my iMac and want to install it on my new mac book but my mac book doesn't have a dvd drive. I tried to download the upgrade but it looks for an older version. How do I get Logic on the Mac book ?

I would like to install logic on my new mac book but there is no dvd drive. I tried to downlaod the upgrade but that didn't work. How do I download it for the first time?
    Thanks!

You can only use the App Store version to reinstall on your new Mac if you bought Logic via the App Store in the first place.... and then it will appear under the Purchases tab in the Mac App Store App so long as you are signed in using the same Apple ID you used to purchase Logic via the App store in the first place.
If you bought the DVD edition of Logic Studio then you must initially install using those original DVDs to begin with and then update to the latest version of your version of Logic via software updates.
No DVD drive? Buy an external one.. Amazon do a very cheap basic one that works well..
    or...
Use Remote Disk if you still have your older Mac which has a built in DVD drive...

  • I want to copy my library to my mac book from my mac how do I do that

I want to copy my library to my mac book how do I do this I tried using my back up but it did not trasfer the library as events?

Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • Online mac books and instore mac books??

hi i have family in usa who are coming over next week and they have offerd to bring me over a mac book as its cheaper.i was lookin the 2.16ghh, 120gb hard drive and was goin to upgrade the memory to 2gb. they say they can get this instore. is that possible or do you need to order it online to customize it? and also will there be any problems with bringing the note book into the uk?
mac book 2.16ghz white   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

They can buy the MacBook in store with the 2GB. Ordering it online would require it being shipped to a US address. Alternatively they could buy the base model and you could easily upgrade the RAM yourself to 2GB. It is a user upgradable part, thus it would not violate the Apple warranty, and would be much cheaper. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303721
In terms of bringing it into the UK, there shouldn't be an issue if they stick it in luggage or even carry on. If they wish to avoid possible customs tax just tell them (customs) the truth; it's a gift. Personally I'd go through the nothing to declare line, unless they have other items that need to be declared.
Further, Apple Warranty is worldwide, so if you have issues here in the UK the Apple stores or authorised service providers can work on the machine without issue.
I help this answer is somewhat helpful.

  • Difference between upgraded Mac Book Air and Macbook Pro

    Hi All,
So I was recently gifted a MacBook Air with unexpected upgrades. Here are the specs:
1.7GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz
    8GB 1600MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM
    512GB PCIe-based Flash Storage
The MacBook Air ended up with a severe battery issue and The Mac Store okayed an exchange on it. Upon realizing I had such an upgraded Macbook Air I started looking at exchanging it for a Pro. The sales folks really didn't answer my questions thouroughly, though I did end up going for the pro, I just feel it's a more solid computer. I got the one with a solid state hard drive, a 2.6 GHZ i5 processer and 8 GB 1600MHz DDR3 of memory.
Today I came across the specs on that Air and realized how much the processor had been upgraded. I'm frustruated that none of the sales folks really went over that with me, they just told me the Pro was nicer.
But now looking at the differences, I'm wondering if that MacBook Air with all it's upgrades actually nicer?
I'm hoping folks on this forum can explain the differences between these specs, especially the processors and how I'd experience the difference.

You shouldn't do. I'm infamous at multitasking. I will have a video paused, watching a few different youtube videos, had a few projects in word open. The Macbook Air never missed a beat. THanks to the SSD. If you're looking for portability go with the Air.
When it comes to Photoshop, it woud really depend on what you're doing in it. The SSD and Processor in the Air would help you a lot. But if you're editing larger pictures you might notice a bit of slug.
    I have a 13 Macbook Air 2011 1.7ghz, 4gb, 128gb SSD for reference .

  • Wireless Mac Book vs. MacBook Pro

    Good morning,
Is there a difference between the wireless card/antenna in a MacBook and a MacBook Pro? My MacBook is able to connect easily to a wireless network with a mediocre signal, but my MacBook Pro does not. If the signal is full strength then there are no problems.
I'm thinking there must be a difference in wireless cards or antennas.
    Cheers,

May well depend on which MacBook, which MacBook Pro and which kind of network is involved, BurntMonkey.
Are we talking an 802.11g network or 802.11n? An early MacBook or a recent one? An early MBP or a recent one?
I'd have to say that my own unibody MacBookPro 13" is at least the equal (and probably the best) of our "first edition" 802.11g black MacBook, a later 802.11n early 2007 "plastic" MacBook, and a late 2007 "SantaRosa" 802.11n MBP on our Airport Extreme / Airport Express 802.11n/g network when it comes to range.
    Cheers
