Mac Book Pro & travelling

Hi
Could anyone advice me how it is best to protect my Mac Book Pro while travelling?
I need software which does not allow people to get to my computer/operating system if stolen. Any good software for this? Also locks, other security - do you have any advice on this?
What about altitude - does Mac Book Pro handle altitude at all? Also - I will be going to cold and remote areas, any idea how to protect my laptop then? Thanks for all info my friends!

Be aware that no matter what you do, if the machine is stolen, they can get at any unencrypted data by simply reinstalling the OS or removing the hard disk and putting it in an external case.
If you have truly truly sensitive data you don't want people to get at, use Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities) to create a "Disk Image" This is basically a file that when open, mounts a new volume on your desktop. You have likely used Disk Images when receiving software off the internet. They have an extension of .DMG.
Once in Disk Utility, Click the "+ New Image" icon in the toolbar. A Save sheet will open. At the top, name your disk image, like "Super Secret Drive" into any folder you want, like your Documents folder. This file will be named "Super Secret Drive.dmg" Now, lower in the sheet dialog, you need to name the volume (ie drive) that will appear when you open the disk image. This can be the same, "Super Secret Drive" for example, or something simpler. For now we'll name it differently to avoid confusion, such as "Data"
For the volume size, choose some size that you think will be able to hold your data, such as 100mb. Since I used this technique ONLY for very sensitive data (text files of friend's home security passwords, Quicken Files, etc) I don't usually make this very big.
Now in the encryption section, choose 256bit AES.
Click Create, enter a password, and if you are truly concerned, don't even save the password in your keychain, but this is really not necessary. A new disk image file will be saved in Documents and the the disk "Data" will mount and show on your desktop under Macintosh HD.
Now you can just save your secret data to the Data volume. When you are done with it, eject "Data" like you would a CD-ROM. The next time you need to use your data, open the "Super Secret Disk.dmg" file to mount "Data"
You can even drag "Super Secret Disk.dmg" into your Login Items in the Accounts preferences so it mounts whenever you log in.
Why all of this work? Because if your machine is stolen (and you are not logged in and using it at the time), then even if they rip the disk out and look at it externally, all they will see is a file named "Super Secret Data" but everything on that disk will be encrypted. Without your password, there will be little they can do to get at it.
This is basically what the "File Vault" security option does, but instead of doing it for your entire home directory, it just protects the files you choose to save onto the Data volume.
You can't easily change the size of "Data" later, so pick a size that will hold all of your data for the forseeable future, and really only put data there that you don't want people to ever see. Mail.app can't save it's mail there, for example, but for other stuff, spreadsheets, word documents that are sensitive, etc, it is a fine approach.
Also make sure you back up regularly, and if you ever get disk corruption on a disk image, Alsoft's DiskWarrior is a fine tool at fixing them.

  • Yosemite downloaded and installed than Black screen.  all we have is a black screen. Traveling in Indonesia so no Apple store nearby. The screen does not respond to reboot in safe mode. Can anyone help to get the Mac Book Pro up and running again?

We are in indonesia travelling and after downloading and installing Yosemite, on our next restart the screen went black and responds to nothing. Tried to reboot (shift key) in safe mode after first crashing the system but nothing responds except for the opening chime. Toal disaster so any help will be greatly appreciated. Judging by the comments I have read, Yosemite seems to have many issues for us to look forward to, if and when we can bring back the Mac Book Pro to life.

See if you can boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down).  There you can reinstall the system.

Why do I need to connect my Ipad mini with my Mac Book Pro via iCloud? I don't have iCloud on my MacBook Pro and only intend to use the mini to check e-mail and use Garage Band and Photo Booth for song writing when traveling . . .

Thanks Community! I solved the problem. In fact it was not a problem but lack of understanding. These guys at Apple are way ahead in thir thinking. I will try to explain as short as I can.
In Lion, ihe Prefferences/Display show only two choices: 6-7 steps of resolution and some color tab. No two screens, no two display to overlap, nothing for us to do. "That was the problem"! Everything is automatic.
When I connected the HDMI cable to the Miniport into a T-bolt slot, the TV screen showed the "spiral galaxy" how Zyriab is calling it. In fact he gave me the best clue. That shows the connection is good. But where is the Mac Book image?
You have to drag it to the right out of the Mac Book display area, and "voila!" it will continue on the TV screen. The same with the mouse pointer, push it out ofthe Mac Book display area and you see it on the TV sreen. Good image, you can keep the max resolution, etc. The sound is still on the Book's speakers. I have to figure that out.
Thank everybody, especialy Zyriab, ne was the closest.
    High regards to everybody

I need to talk to someone about changing all of my accounts. A iCloud account was opened not by me and I lost 17 years of contacts. I have slowly gotten them back. My files from my Mac Book were taken and are gone. It has cost me about 60,000 dollars in business since November which has effected my staff as well. Many personal ireplacable memories of my childrens Photos were taken, Business, designs and accounting and personalFiles you name it gone or corrupted. My main PC including 4 external hard drives, then the Mac Book, My Iphones, itouch. Ipad were next and then my Mac Book pro. This is very humbling and heart felt. those who work with me have very strong beliefs, it was an internal doing or I should say someone gained or was allowed access to my home and equipment. I travel and tour and am gone quite a bit. This was and is the most difficult thing that has happened to me in a long time. In truth business and work will and can be rectified that not the point. It's how and what has been done which is the most damaging very personal almost vidictive but I will stop there. I feel so violated and saddened at the same time. I am hoping to contact someone through Apple or even an outside source to see if my files can be recouped and how to go about doing these changes all at once without all of the emails back and forth to approve changes in accounts what a pain. I want to change all accounts associated with apple. Apple ID and Pass words, I tunes ID and Pass word you name it.When I leave for work now days I have to take all of my equipment or lock things in the safe. I have an alarm system that is very good in additons to, animals still with the animals inside the motion detectors are off and in reality the damage has been done . I now this sounds crazy but I have proof of my back up files not all of them plus you can see in my documents all of my business accounts which are in orderof complition and dates are empty. My email accounts were also hacked and thru that individuals were able to change at will. When you have over 20 years of an association and relationships they know everything about someone. I do not want to press charges but I am to that point I need to bring in someone to investigate and I really do not know whom to even call. I have won awards for my work and my designs and information being taken has hurt more than words can express. I am currently out of town doing this late at night. I have changed my banking you name it. I need to have access to my computers to work but the stress of these constant changes and invasion of privacy are beyond expression. I plug in any of my usb drives and they are empty or my computers do not recognize them. I plug in my usb connector from my HP 8100  Printer with Blue tooth capabilities and it pops up and an external E drive for downloading just like an external drive. My printer acepts every imaginable portable disk on the market . Many of my usb drives are gone or have been corrupted. I have this darn air drop that goes on all the time. My computers I turn off and then they are on when I get up. I can go on and on. I live in the bay area and I am asking for help in trying to stop all of this. I will call Apple next but I wanted to put it out on this forum with the hopes of some response or input. I have all of my new and very minimal recovered information now on a web-based server which I know is safe the pass words and set up were done very discreetly (one can only hope). I apologize in advance for laying this out there like this. I am just so frustrated and because of the POSSIBLE implications makes it even harder In which I truly want to be proven wrong. I have never written or thought that I would be doing this as it is. If anything I hope some good comes out of this for someone. Bluetooth is a powerful tool this much I know now. Wow this is just simply amazing. There are 14 products I have purchased. I have been a windows person for years because of my work somethings are prapriatary to that OS but I love the Apple products. I am despratley trying not to nor will I throw in the towel. I know its a great product and its not the product. I just want to have the best opotunity to recover and have control over my designs and pretty much my privacy and peace of mind not too much to ask..:-) Oh! do not get me wrong I am willing to pay for services thats not the issue here. Once again thank you for at least espressing my frustrations.

  • Problems with new Mac Book Pro 13'' +power adaptor

    Hi there,
I'm new here and first of all I'd like to appologize from my lack of technical language, since my only interesst in computers is that they don't give me problems so I can keep not knowing too much about them.
Ok, so I bought the new Mac Book Pro 13'' exactly 2 months ago cause my old and long travelled Power Book G4 died. I didn't hesitate to spend the money to buy the new one, cause I was so happy with my experience with the old one and in my mind returning to PCs was not even considered.
BUT...I'm not totally happy about my new laptop...from day 1 Safari would just close itself but I didn't give too much thought about it. After this, not only Safari can close up to several times a day, but also iphoto or any other program that I use for work. But that's not all..One day it would take minutes to start running and it would go extremely slow...another day it would start also very slow but also it wouldn't show the tools bar on top or my folders. Another time it would show me, instead of the normal starting page, a page where it would ask me to accept or not a kind of revision for hardware. After so many problems of course I pressed yes...everything seemed normal, then computer started and seemed to be running normal again (aside from this safari and other programs that shut down). Today my computer, when moved, just went totally blank but fortunately I could start it with nor problems after it.
So...anyone knows what the problem must be?? Should I take it to a Technical service ??? and there's another issue...i'm handing in m phD in a week so I can't just be without computer now, and in a week I'm flying to Canada where I also will need my computer for work...what can I do???
And the second problem...the power adaptor from the beginning seemed to act funny sometimes...sometimes charching, sometimes not, I would follow the instructions in the support part and after being several minutes changing one cord for the other, to keep it 1 minute disconnected and so at some point it would start functioning again. But this happened seldom so also I would think it was a protectiion mechanism of the adapter. But, when this is happening more often than not, then it gets annoying. Also I've been transporting it in a careful way since I bought it to find that after only 2 months in the cord (from the computer to adaptor) you can see the internal cable as if there was some cut...a third one seems to be appearing too. I've taken it to the technical support and the guy who was helfpul but also honest said he couldn't do anything for me cause since there were those cuts, he could always be said that it was a misuse of it-an accident and then he would have to pay the replace himself. Well, it's not!!! My old adaptor has been transported in a way less careful way and it's survived with NO problems for 5 years. The material is clearly different from the old cord. This one because it's new, I only need to put it in a special bag air protected. Honestly I don't feel happy to pay 80 € for an adaptor that I don't know if it's gonna last me only 2 months or that I know I can't transport normally. The guy suggested me to ask in forums and to call directly to the apple technical service.
Again, has anyone had any similar problems with the adaptor???
    Rosanna

Take it to an Apple retailer and have the computer repaired.  It is still in warranty.

  • Can I use my mac book pro with 120 volt and 240 volt power supplies?  Does the power converter automatically switch, so I just need a different adapter plug?

I got my mac book pro in the U.S., but I will be travelling to where there is 240 volt power.  Does the mag safe power adapter switch automatically, so I just need a converter plug, or do I need a transformer to convert from 240 to 120 volts?  Thanks.

    Hi,
I too bought my Macbook Pro in the US and I live in the UK (its so much cheaper in the US! No 20% VAT!)
The power adapter does work on UK 230v power. You can also get a three pin extension lead (like the 2 pin US one that came with the MBP) for about £3 with free delivery from Amazon UK.
Another tip, whne you are back in the UK, and you are switching from a PC to a Mac, get in touch with your local Apple Shop who run one to one free courses on how to use your MBP.
    Hope This Helps!!

  • Mac book Pro i5 or i7 ? Performance difference major or minor ?

    Hi folks ,
Hope every one is doing great
I have to purchase a Mac book pro 13 inch . But confusion I am having is between i5 and i7 processor . I ll be using my laptop mainly for surfing , movie watching, and Video editing ( FCP , Adobe premiere pro ) . i7 is expensive than i5 and right now my budget is not permiting me to buy i7 until or unless there it is EXTREMELY important to buy a i7 mac book as there are will be huge performance issue . From what I read I got to know that there wont be huge difference since they both are using dual core processor and there is no option of hyper threading in i7 either . Also there aint any difference of graphics card as they both use the cpu inbuilt intel graphics card. So one thing which I am considering in to buy i5 and then spend some money on expanding RAM which will be cheaper , I suppose .(4GB to 8Gb). Will that be fine?
So just wanted to know from some one who has used i5 mac book pro and ran editing software (or any one who knows about it)  . Did you guys face any glitches or are they very minor to be noticeable. I am fine with extra time taken in rendering and exporting , thats not the issue for me . Only issues is that videos shouldnt lag or appear jerky in the timeline because then it will hamper editing experience .
I know Imac in same rate is the best option for editing and nothing can beat that . But I couldnt go for it because of portability issue as I have to travel a lot .
Hope to hear expert comments from you guys.
    Cheers !
    Anurag

I have been editing with Final Cut for many years, on many different Macs.  Currently using Final Cut Express v4 on a 2.66GHZ Core2Duo MacBookPro with 8GB RAM.  Ditto on my 3.06GHZ Core2Duo iMac with 8GB RAM.  It runs really well on both computers.  An i5 based Mac will do even better.
The amount of RAM definitely makes a difference if you are using things like Photoshop, Aperture, Lightroom, iMovie, Final Cut and similar apps.  They will run in 4GB RAM but they run a lot better with 8GB RAM or more.  If I were configuring a new Mac to run these kinds of programs, 8GB RAM would be my suggested minimum.

  • Should I go for the Mac book pro or the iMac?

Here's my dilemma: I am about to be a sophomore in college and my HP laptop just isn't cutting it for my regular use. My question (which I know is hard to answer) is whether I should purchase the Mac book pro or an iMac. Keep in my I have an iPhone and an iPad, which both come in handy for browsing. I currently use my iPad to keep most of my notes and lectures, but I still need a good computer. I need advice from someone who  has had this same problem or owns both an iMac and MacBook Pro. I know my iPad doesn't replace a laptop and I will probably be told to decide whether I need portability, but I would like to hear from someone who also had to make this decision. I'm not leaning to one or the other right now. I am at my home for a good bit, but I do travel around a lot since I am in college. With google drive and other apps I can do most of my writing on my iPad, but for printing reasons I still need the computer. So what are some opinions on which is a better but considering my needs?

In college, my guess would be that portablity would be very important. Since the iMac isn't that sort of eliminates it from consideration.

  • Using your mac book pro internationally!

    how do?
I am thinking of buying a new mac book pro, but I am trying to work out
    1. where to buy it, ie here in Ireland, or in the the States.
and 2. I am emergrating to Oz in 5 months or so and I am concerned that the voltage difference may mess the computer up.
    Any Ideas?
    g5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    1) I normally recommend buying it in the country where you're going to use it the most.
    2) No problem as the MagSafe power adapter can handle voltages from 100-240V. All you need is a power plug adapter from UK/Ireland/USA to Australian. Otherwise, yu can always buy the Apple Worldwide Travel Kit which provides the white adapter plugs for all countries. It is expensive but is handy.

  • Help me to choose between I mac and Mac Book Pro

I am thinking of purchasing an apple computer. I am in a dilemna as to whether I should purchase an I mac 21 inches or Mac Book Pro 13 inches. I live in India. My budget is around $1200. My main applications include editing photos in photoshop etc. Give me your comments

I would say the iMac has great oppurnity on photography and editing Photos. I reccommend Adobe Photoshop CS6 is a great application for editing photos with creativity if have not heard of it or installed it before!

But the MacBook Pro is good too with the newest model of it from 2012.
Macbook Pro is great if you travel or work a lot on the go!

  • Why doesn't my website show correctly on Mac Book Pro Mtn. Lion?

When I open iWeb on my old Mac Book everything opens up just fine.  Now that I have purchased a new Mac Book Pro, all I get when I open iWeb is the template page.    I tried to move the domain only to the Library/Applications Support/iWeb, but that did not help.    Any suggestions are appreciated.  I hate to redo everything.  I like using iWeb for our travel website.  Thanks for your help.

In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or Mountain Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • Buying a Mac Book Pro

    Good night,
First of all, I am sorry if this post should not be here (this is the first time that I used the forums)
This summer, I am traveling to New York, and I would like to buy a Mac Book Pro, and I want western spanish keyboard. I can not stay there for a long time, and I would like to know if in the Fifth Avenue store there is usually stock of Mac Book's Pro with this keyboard. If there is not stock, I would like to know if I could order it by apple online store and ask them to send it to my hotel.
I would also like to know if I can get the free iPod touch, because I am starting my high education, but I am from Spain.
Sorry for my English and thank you so much for your answers

I do not think you can do this. I really doubt they stock the MBP with a Western Spanish keyboard - Apple Stores generally stock only standard configurations. For example, the Boston Apple Store (which is actually the largest Apple Store in North America), does not stock MBPs with the Western Spanish keyboard, or even with the faster processor.
You cannot order online from the US Apple Online Store unless you have a credit card with a US billing address.

Woggledog, the OP wants to buy one from in-store stock in NYC, not to order one online.

can I use my mac book pro in ireland without a converter?  meaning just use my USA plug with an adapter (not voltage converter) in the socket?

  • Capture from Betacam Deck to Mac Book Pro -- Capture Card?

Okay, mobile editors, now's your chance. I have a client that wants to be able to capture from a Betacam SP or SX deck directly into his Mac Book on location. Are there any 3rd party cards that have component/composite (a la a Kona card for a tower) that slots into a Mac Book Pro? or even a PCMCIA card for a Powerbook G4.
We realize the ioHD is coming out, as well as the AJA io which would work, but we are looking for something smaller that travels better.
    My thanks for any insight.
    dj

There aren't any capture cards that will serve that purpose.
The AJA IoLA will probably be your smallest bet, if you want to capture Uncompressed (which also raises the question, what drive will you be capturing your media to?). It's a pretty small unit. The Io is full rack width, but the IoLA and IoLD are half rack wide.
If you're capturing down to DV resolution, there are numerous capture devices that will convert any analog composite signal to DV resolution and send it to your computer via FW.
I'd personally use the AJA IoLA. Oh, and I do personally use the IoLA. Rock solid.
