Mac book pro wakes automatically, mac book pro wakes automatically, mac book pro wakes automatically, mac book pro wakes automatically, mac book pro wakes automatically

When I put my macbook pro to sleep, it will randomly turn back on all by itself. Sometimes it's in 5 minutes, sometimes it's 20  or could be in the middle of the night. I checked all the energy saver settings. Is someone hacking me, and how would I know? Or is my computer about to die? Thanks, lm

Hey, I had the same problem about a year ago with my mac - I tried many suggestions (including energy saver, disconnecting USB drives and uninstalling printers) and none of these worked.  Then I stumbled across a post from some guy who said it was to do with airport and your computer searching for wireless if signal drops triggering the wake.  He offered a fix (sorry I can't recall what that was!) and it stopped my problem... Until a few days ago all of a sudden I am back at square one with random wakey wakey's.
Unfortunately I never commented on his thread so it is not in my discussion history!!!  BARH!!  If I find it through keyword searching, I will be sure to share with you.
The only changes that have occurred to my computer that coincide with the wake / sleep issue are updating word for mac, replacing track pad batteries (which I have done once already and this issue never occurred then) and installing dropbox.  I wonder if the cold of winter is waking mac.

I am having trouble getting my My Mac Book Pro 15" Retina to wake up with an Apple Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse while Docked in a Hengedock vertical docking station. The Keyboard and mouse work great with the laptop lid open but when closed in the docking station the bluetooth signal does not seem to transmit.  Is there a setting that can be changed to allow an Bluetooth keyboard and mouse to wake the computer while docked?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I think I may have found the fix for this. My MacBook Pro was dying in its sleep every time (after installing Snow Leopard), whether it went to sleep automatically or I used a Hot Corner. I went into System Preferences>Desktop & Screen Saver and changed the screen saver to Flurry, and it works now. I had had it set to a folder containing a single .pct file that I had created.
Good advice Mike! When in doubt check the ScreenSaver settings.
Definitely seems that it has a problem with that pic... In my case, selecting any images instead of the default setting (no screensaver) seems to have cured my non waking issue on my early Macbook Pro in Snow Leopard.
My original problem was that no amount of trackpad input woke it, but the space bar did. The space bar seemed to wake it up with the previous Screen Saver setting. Now trackpad wakes it up (even from total sleep as well as screen saver), too. Might be nice to know about if this is an intended 'feature' as a security trick. Otherwise I consider this a bug.
My vote is that it's a bug.

  • Can I use my mac book pro with 120 volt and 240 volt power supplies?  Does the power converter automatically switch, so I just need a different adapter plug?

I got my mac book pro in the U.S., but I will be travelling to where there is 240 volt power.  Does the mag safe power adapter switch automatically, so I just need a converter plug, or do I need a transformer to convert from 240 to 120 volts?  Thanks.

    Hi,
I too bought my Macbook Pro in the US and I live in the UK (its so much cheaper in the US! No 20% VAT!)
The power adapter does work on UK 230v power. You can also get a three pin extension lead (like the 2 pin US one that came with the MBP) for about £3 with free delivery from Amazon UK.
Another tip, whne you are back in the UK, and you are switching from a PC to a Mac, get in touch with your local Apple Shop who run one to one free courses on how to use your MBP.
    Hope This Helps!!

  • Why do USB drives plugged into USB hubs make my Mac Book Pro (Retina late 2013) wake from sleep?

I have 2 x USB hubs, a Logitech USB 2.0 hub and a Broway USB 3.0 hub. Tested both and both seem to be the cause of my late 2013 Mac Book Pro waking from sleep. I ran syslog to find out why (syslog |grep -i "Wake reason") and the reason I got back was "kernel[0] <Notice>: Wake reason: XHC1" - this means nothing to me, but it didn't take too much mucking about to hunt the problem down and figure out it was the USB hub with any USB drive attached. If the drive is attached directly to the computer. No problem, computer sleeps fine.
This was a problem I encountered (and never solved) with OSX 10.6.8, a 2008 Macbook Pro the same Logitech USB 2.0 hub, but with different drives. I put the problem down to a bug that never got solved in an old system. But I am simply AMAZED after my update to a new MBP and new system that it is still about almost 6 years, a dozen MBP's and 4 systems later.
The other problem is that not only does the USB drive/ USB hub combo wake the computer it also loses the drive upon sleep and mounts it again upon wake. Then repeats this process every couple of minutes. And it obviously doesn't eject the drives properly because each time I return to the computer after I put it to sleep or let it go to sleep I get a giant list of "Disk Not Ejected Properly" notifications about it. Which I'm guessing could eventually cause some file damage.
I've tried combinations of different drives, different hubs (a Belkin and a no-name Chinese brand 2.0 hub) and the problem persists. Is there a solve to this problem? I'm surprised to see so little posts on forums about this. Am I just unlucky and got another combination of faulty/problematic hardware, or is this a real problem that exists for everyone? If not I would love to know if people have found winning combos of USB hubs and drives. But if it is, then it HAS to be solved.
If you have a Macbook Pro, then you are limited to 2 USB outlets, this is obviously a bare minimum and I would say that 95% of people using their laptop computer in the office or at home have a hub, and very likely a USB drive attached to it. I know actual Apple reps don't really pay much attention to the community support posts, but I've got 6 months worth of Applecare left and would like suggestions about how to get Apple's attention about this problem.
BTW Jettison (a 3rd party app that ejects drives properly before sleep) is not a solve. It is a 3rd party app that tries to fill a hole in a broken system. I don't want to eject my drive upon sleep, I want it to got the **** to sleep.

Is there a pattern to the time of day or other detail that may be
traced back to a OS X system cause of this odd phenomenon?
Are there any copies of system files on any of the attached USB
external drives? Any libraries, such as iTunes, iPhoto, etc?
Once the drives are indexed by Spotlight, are their permissions
ignored by the OS X? Content, if neutral, should not affect the
wake or sleep cycle; especially if they're ignored by the OS X.
Could there be a bad cable or other component? If so that would
be a difficult process of elimination to detect it. Usually replacing
most suspect components in the USB stream (external to Macs)
is a rote way to mechanically test that idea; & not 100% sure.
Does the equipment all have a good ground to the utility or house
electrical field? An intermittent ground may affect more than sleep.
Hard to say at this point. Maybe a late-night talk radio guru on
remote viewing could peer into your situation and sleuth it out?
Sorry to have run out of ideas, but the process must be electrical
& mechanical to some extent. - Or perhaps odd software inspired.
Do you have any phone-home spyware items inside, just jumping
at the chance to spill your information? Little Snitch may help.
PS: Perhaps the computer needs to go into Apple & have a genius
or product specialist at AASP test the unit thoroughly... BlueTooth?

  • I have purchased a Mac book pro and when I opened i tunes the songs that I previously purchased started to download.  I closed it and went to bed only to wake up to no songs in my i tuners account.  Can I please get these songs on my MAC back

So I was so stoked to get my songs, I had windows on my old pc and upgraded my life with mac book pro.  When i got into my i tunes account it automatically startesd [pulling the songs I purchased.  I was amazaed jumping around like a kid,  I'm 39.  I was working on a project and purchased a couple songs that night to use in my movie.  I closed out everything and shut down the computer, Only to awaken to have it all taken away from me.  Why?   Can you please help me?

Your music will only be where you put it.
Copy it from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer.
If for some reason you have failed to backup and you do not have the old computer, not good, then you can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries.

  • Mac Book pro slow to wake from sleep

Hi , Sometimes when I leave my mac book pro and it goes to sleep (screen goes black when lid open) it takes a while to wake from sleep again - sometimes up to 30-40 seconds? This seems very odd for an expensive machine that is around 6 months old and something that never used to happen with my old powerbook G4. It doesn't happen all the time but regularly. Should I be worried? Any help greatly appreciated!

I'm curious if you ever found a solution for this issue.  I recently purchased the SanDisk Extreme II 480GB, replacing my OWC Extreme Pro 240GB.  The OWC never experienced the "slow to wake" issue whereas the SanDisk drive does, consistently.  To make sure I'm having the same symptoms, this is what happens to me:  Put the mac to sleep (either manually or letting it do it on its own, waiting for the led to pulse showing that it is asleep), then wake it up (press a key on the keyboard), the logon screen shows almost immediately but as soon as I try to type the pinwheel/beach ball shows up, I wait between 20 and 30 seconds and then I'm able to type and all is well.
I contataced SanDisk and their support was horrible.  They simply told me "contact MAC for this issue" (no joke, not "contact Apple" but "contact MAC", in all caps).  I explained that it works fine with the OWC drive just not the SanDisk.  They replied with another article showing that all macs have trouble waking from sleep (not true). I replied again indicating that I've never had this issue with any of my 3rd party drives, only this SanDisk.  Then the replied simply stating that all mac's have issues with 3rd party hard drives when waking from sleep.  At this point I threw a fit and yelled at my screen, even though it wasn't my screens fault.
In any case, their support has not been willing to do any actual troubleshooting.  I'd love to return it and I might have to - but as you stated, it's annoying to have this issue but the performance is fine the rest of the time.
Thanks for any input you have.

I have updated to OS X 10.10.1 and still experience wake sleep failures. The only time my mac book pro has recovered from sleep 100% was the period between purchase date and the first software update. I am somewhat annoyed that Apple has managed to break something that worked and has not managed to fix it over the last 18 months! Has anyone managed to hack around this problem?

i do experience the same. i use my mid 2011 macbook air in clamshell mode and when i put it to sleep with the display port cable still connected to my external monitor it reboots about 10 minutes later presenting me the sleep wake failure error. do you use an external monitor too?

  • Mac book pro automatically shuts down

I bought a mac book pro last december 2012, yet i already experienced problems with my mac last january 2013. Twice it failed to open after i had it in sleep. Charger indicated no light. Twice i also had it taken in for service, in both occasions they are able to open it after several hours and days of service. During the last diagnosis, they said that they did a thorough check and it all passed. Please note that when i had it in sleep, its charge is more than 50 percent. For the third time this week, it automatically shuts down and does not open and no light in the charger also. What could be the problem? Its already the third time this happens and its really getting too tedious to have the similar problem yet the service provider said there seems to be no problem but i cant use it continuously- could i already request for replacement? Thanks.

Problem is you have a faulty Mac computer. You need to take it back in with documentation, like a movie, of the problems you are having.
Basically all Apple does is run a software test on the hardware, if it passes that test they say "Everything is Fine" even though you are having numerous problems. Without proper documentation of the problem or problems you are having you will get NO help from Apple.

  • I'm downloading the OS X Mavericks then in the process of downloading till 4.20GB it stops and shut down my Mac Book Pro and automatically restarted

i'm downloading the OS X Mavericks then in the process of downloading till 4.20GB it stops and shut down my Mac Book Pro and automatically restarted. Any answers for this?

The download is over 5GB's so yours is incomplete.
You should be able to resume the download (instead of starting over) at the App Store.

  • Mac Book Pro Restarts automatically

My mac book pro hangs for few seconds and then restarts. This problem has started after I have upgraded to OS X Yosemite. Please fix this.

If you can't start up and log in in the usual way, try in safe mode.
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Log in as an administrator to carry out these instructions. If you have only one account, you are the administrator.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode.
If you're able to log in, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
