Mac Book Pro with external monitor?

I have a MBP that I have hooked up to an external keyboard, mouse and monitor. When I am booted to OS X I can see the display on my external screen but when I boot into Windows 7 I have to open the lid on the MBP to get anything on the external display.
How can I get Windows 7 to show up on the external display without having to open the lid on the MBP?

I retract my previous "No." If you can live with limited performance (slow refresh/choppy action video/no gaming) on the second external monitor, you could use a USB video adapter and a DVI-HDMI adapter to connect it to a USB port on your computer.

Just a note about the system information that appears below your post: iOS 4.3.3 does not run on Macs, only on iPods, iPads and iPhones. File >> New Catalog
Choose a new name and save.
When the empty catalog launches you are ready to start over.

A Time Machine backup drive should be substantially larger than the system drive. If you have a 128 or 256 GB SSD then a 1 TB drive will suffice. If you have a 512 GB SSD then a 2 TB drive will suffice. As leroydouglas indicated any brand other than WD will do.

You should have no problem using the external optical drive. As for the external HD, you'll need to format it properly, depending on whether you want to use it with a Windows machine as well as your MacBook Pro.

If I were you I'd install a small SSD as the boot drive from OWC:

Then put a second large conventional drive either in the optical bay (Data Doubler) or in an external.
You don't say which MBP you have: Size, CPU type.
Also when you upgrade you could see if you can salvage your data from your old HD. Can you hear it spin up? If so Data Rescue IV.

Press the power button down to force a emergency hardware shutdown and hold the option/alt key down and reboot
If you see your OS X boot partition, then click it and the arrow, head to System Preferences > Startup Disk and reset it. Done.

If no OS X boot volume appears in Startup Manager, then OS X is corrupted.
Try more of the Steps above (like 1-8) then if that doesn't work.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Once you got your data off, erase and reinstall OS X onto the MacintoshHD partition and then restore from TimeMachine or bootable clone if you have it. or build new and return users files from the data recovery drive.

Open your Displays system preferences. Is there an Arrangement tab and does it show two screens? If no Arrangement tab then your mac does not know it has two screens. Not enough free disk space for encoding the remaining assets. iDVD needs 6,541 GB of disk space to encode the remaining assets, but only 2,179 GB is available at "Macintosh HD". I've moved several items over to an external hard drive but this error message remains. How do I save this movie to the preferred external hard drive?

You can move the iDVD project file to the EHD but you still need plenty of free space on your boot drive for encoding.
It's strongly recommended that a minimum of 20-25 GB of free space be maintained on the boot drive. Otherwise you'll run into what you're experiencing and increased encoding times.

It shows the backup as a file and shows various system info. but there are no photos or other files shown.

A PowerPC Mac, if that's what it is, won't be able to see an Intel Mac's formatted data. Also ExFat formatting is not supported by 10.6.3 or earlier. I would try viewing the backup on another Intel Mac with at least 10.6.4. If it isn't there, then the backup never really took place. I much profer a hard drive with Carbon Copy Cloner.

You can't, currently only the iPhone has the personal hotspot function, it hasn't been enabled on the iPad - whether it will be possible in the future I don't know
