Mac Book Pro Won't Open My External Drive

I have a 200gb external drive. When I plug it into my fire wire 400, the macbook recognizes the drive, but when I try to open it, I get ye olde spinning color wheel that goes on until I turn off the drive. Any ideas?

First, I will inform you that your nik is inappropriate. Please change it immediately. We're not prudes here on the Apple Discussions, but we do try to maintain a bit of decorum.
Nevertheless, I will try to help you. There are several possible explanations for the behavior you are seeing. The most likely is that the volume on your external drive has suffered a disk error. Connect the drive and turn it on, then open Disk Utility, select the drive's volume on the left in the "First Aid" pane, and click on "Repair Disk." Let us know what, if any, errors it reports, and if it is able to successfully repair the volume.
One of a several things might happen when you attempt to repair the volume. The best scenario for you is if it actually finds erors and is able to repair them; problem solved. It could find errors and not be able to repair them, in wich case you will need to either format the volume or use Disk Warrior to attempt further repairs. Even if Disk Warrior works, I would recommend backing up what you can after successful repairs, then reformatting the volume.
Disk Utility might "freeze" when attempting to either unmount or repair the drive. In this case, circumstances point to a problem not with the volume, but with communication between your computer and the volume. This could be caused by incompatible firmware on the drive, or bad hardware in the drive. If it is a firmware issue, it can be resolved by downloading and installing updated firmware (if it exists) for the drive. Check the drive manufacturer's website.
"Bad drive hardware" could be a bad enclosure "bridge" (Firewire to ATA), a bad ATA cable in the enclosure (I've experienced this problem myself in the past), or a bad drive inside the enclosure. Of these three problems, a bad cable would be the easiest to fix. Obviously, fixing it would involve opening the enclosure, but once opened it is a simple matter to replace the existing cable with a new one.
Follow what instructions I have given, then use the additional info I have given to help you troubleshoot this problem. Good luck, and change that name(!!).

  • Mac Book Pro won't start from hard drive when turned on

I have a new 15 in Mac Book Pro with 10.8.1. When I turn it on it always boots to the disk utilities rather than my harddrive. I select my startup disk and reboot. It starts fine. But when I shut it off the same sequence repeats. I have verified my drive and selected the hard drive as my startup disk.
What is happeneing? What should I try?

  • Mac book pro won't detect my external superdrive

I just got a 2012 macbook pro. it has the 10.9.4 update. it doesn't come with a superdrive so i bought an external one. it worked for one day but when i tried to plug it in today nothing happened. The Mac didn't even recognize it. when I opened the DVD Player on my computer manually it says there is no disk or drive found. please help I don't know what to do.

Have you tried connecting your external drive to another computer?  It is possible that it is bad, and won't work with any system now.

  • Mac book pro won't connect to external harddrive

After upgrade de firmware of the AEBS from 7,0 to 7,1 I can not see the to EABS connected external harddrive on my macbook pro anymore. However on my windows pc I can see the drive clearly now with all the files in any directory, while before the upgrade I couldn't see a lot of files on the external harddrive bij Mac or PC. Is there anybody who can help me out with this?

I had the exact same problem, here is what helped me, hopefully it will help you also...
I have been using my airport disk (edge_diskgo external HD) now for about 3 weeks, it has been rock solid... until tonight after the firmware update.
My macs could not locate the airport disk, but my pc's still could.
(Maybe this was how the security problem was solved? You can no longer access the Airport disk from macs? Brilliant!)
It turns out that all I had to do on my both my macs is go to
Airport disk utility (just type that in spotlight) and check
both boxes: Automatically discover Airport Disks
Show Airport disks in menu bar
Then I went to the top right hand side of the menu bar, and clicked on the airport disk utility icon, clicked on my basestation name and entered my basestation password.
I also had following settings in Airport Utility/Disks/File sharing:
    File sharing is enabled
secure shared disks (with base station password)
    Guest access (not allowed)
Share disks over ethernet wan port (checked)..
Advertise disks globally using bonjour (not checked)
My drives are back up with all of their contents, working now, we will see how they do tomorrow.
Thanks for all the help on this post, special Thanks to trevinwagner, hope this helps someone else.... its very late, Goodnight all

Restart the router. If there's no change, see below.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • PSE 6 on Mac Book Pro Crashes when opening a picture

Whenever I try to open a picture PSE crashes. This is similar to another post but I should not be having RAM or generation issues. I have removed and downloaded from different DMGs all to no avail. Please advise.
    Thanks

Thanks for the comment but I wasn't asking about viruses.  The thread I asked on solved the other user's issue because of the Norton incompatibility. I was referring to the original question which had nothing to do with viruses.  I open elements and try to open a picture from iphoto to work on and elements quits.  Since I don't have Norton or any other anti virus program, I was hoping there was another explanation which would apply to my situation.  Any ideas?

There's really no need for Norton on the Mac - because there is no such thing as a Mac virus.  I realize that this could change tomorrow, but as of today, there is no such thing as a Mac virus.  There hasn't been for about a decade.
You can remove Norton.  I removed it from my Macs about a decade ago.
To prevent any future viruses from getting in, set up a new sub-user account on your Mac, and start using it.  Don't run your Mac as the Administrator.
When you run as a lowly user, your Mac keeps an eye over what you do, and demands the Administrator's name and password whenever you do something suspicious.  That won't be a problem 99.9% of the time.  It's only a problem when you try to install an application or a utility.
Keep that limitation in mind, and use it to your advantage.  A virus is an application that pretends to be something else.  It lures you into installing that virus onto your computer.  Let's say in the future you download what you think is a photo.  It's really a virus.  You double-click on it to launch Photoshop Elements.  Instead, you launch the virus, which starts to install itself on your Mac.
At that point, everything comes to a screeching halt when the Mac operating system stops the installation, and puts a message on the screen.  That message will say something like, "Please type the Administrator's name and password to INSTALL THIS APPLICATION into the Applications Folder."  That is your tipoff that you aren't dealing with a photo.  You are dealing with an application.
At this point, you should ask yourself, "Why is a photo trying to install anything?"  Whenever the Mac operating system asks for the Administrator's name and password, you should ask yourself if you know exactly what is being installed.
If you were running your Mac as the Administrator, then you wouldn't get this warning messages.  The Mac would say, "Well, I guess he knows what he's doing, so I'll install this application."  And the still-to-be-written virus would be installed on your Mac.  It's a lot easier to keep viruses off your computer than to try to remove them once they get in.
This is why you don't need anti-virus software on the Mac - if you have an intelligent user operating the computer as a sub-user.

ipad is asking for a passcode which I never installed. iPad is now disabled. Tried syncing to itunes with my mac book pro, won't sync. How do I fix this?

    Recovery Mode
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.

downloaded acrobat reader 11 onto my Mac Book Pro, it can open the file but will not print. Get a message that says PDF cannot be printed, however, I forwarded it to someone else and they could print it, no problem. I called HP and spent an 1hour with them and then called Apple support and worked with them for 3 hours. No one can figure it out. Is there something wrong with this version? the pdf was created in 2004. Do I have to pay to get Acrobat?

Let me give you a slightly different perspective than everyone else here.  You are using an unsecured wireless network, which means that all your network traffic is easily available for viewing by anyone else using that network.  That's bad.  Very bad, for you, unless you absolutely trust everyone who lives within range of this network.  So stop doing it.
As to the Mac not connecting, wireless networking is simply too complex for any reasonable answer without more information.  There are many possible error points, and as often as not it's the Mac that can connect and the Windows PC that cannot.  Since you can't give us any information about the configuration of the neighbor's network, and can't make any changes to it, we can't do much to help you troubleshoot it.

My Mac book pro won't charge. But the connector is plugged in and shows that its charging but it says it has 0% but if I unplug it it will shut off. It's been like this all day but I didn't notice till I turned it on.

It's either a power adapter issue (not likely) or (more likely) a power supply problem on your MBP. Take the machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them diagnose the problem.
    Good luck,
