Mac book vs imac

im new to the forum but very familiar with macs bc of art school. with the holiday rapidly approaching ive decided that its time to get a mac for myself because as a graphic artist using a pc is just too much of a hassle most of the time.
my question is which do you feel is better suited for an artist looking to use programs like photoshop, illustrator, anime studio 5, poser 6, etc.? ive always been bias towards labtops because of their mobility and sleek design but i would like some opinions.
obviously the imac will have a larger hd and more ram but thats something i can always upgrade too. if id go with the macbook id upgrade to 1GB maybe 2GB of ram plus upgrade the internal hd to 80GB and then purchase an external hd as well.
please feel free to tell im supid for wanted a labtop over the desktop version if you think so. or tell me its a wise decision. haha one of the two or something in between is alright with me.

It is a good question - and is a debate I go through every time I buy a new machine. Which I have just my 5th in 10 years or so.
Based on your post you appear willing to spend the extra money to address the storage issues that would be a potential "knock" against the laptop.
You can of course buy a nice monitor for your desktop and plug the macbook into that which also starts to tip the scales toward the macbook.
The other question I would ask is if you have wireless internet in your house. That would be a show stopper for me and would push me to a desktop if I didn't have and wasn't about to get it.
As I say, every time I go to buy a new computer I have this debate. For me it has never come down to any kind of performance issue. Instead it is things like being able to sit at the kitchen table, or on the couch, or in the back yard and do my thing depending on what my need/mood is at the time.
I will take it to the coffee shop or on the road on occasion but that may or may not be a need that you have.
Others may have an opinion about the performance of applications like PS and Illustrator but a Macbook with Core 2 Duo and 2gigs of Ram is nothing to sneeze at performance wise.

Mac Book Pro/iMac help with iPhoto

Hello,
I have a Mac Book Pro and an iMac.
We have stored over 1500 photos on my MacBook Pro.
We also have an iMac with Lightroom 2 on it.
I'm trying to transfer all of the photos from the MacBook Pro onto an external hard drive.
I would then take the external hard drive and transfer the photos to the iMac with the Lightroom 2.
Anyone know how to do this?
I need step by step instructions...........help!

There is no simple way to go from iPhoto to Lightroom. Lightroom cannot make any sense of the iPhoto Library (and vice versa). In essence, you're starting over from scratch.
So, export the pics from iPhoto (File ->Export) and put them on the external.
Plug it into the other machine and import them into Lightroom.

SD will 'clone' your Mac to your Macbook if you start the Macbook in Target mode.
You'll have 2 identical Macs with identical everything.

Quicktime in mac book and imac

when i try and open a video clip with my mac book it opens as a text file but when i try and open it with the imac it opens and plays the file..what am i doing wrong with the mac book when trying to open these files.... is there a setting i haven't done correctly or what... we recently switched from pc and laptop to mac and both macs were purchased within the past month... thanks in advance for any help

Does the video work if you first launch QuickTime Player and then select the video though Player's Open command?
If it does, then you just need to associate that type of file with QuickTime Player. Locate the video in Finder, click in it once to highlight it, then select Get Info from the File menu. Look in the window that will open for a section titled "Open with:". In that section you'll see a pulldown menu that probably now says "Text Edit" or something other than QuickTime Player. Click on the menu, select QuickTime Player, and click the "Change All..." button. That should do the trick.
If you can't open the video even when using the Open command in QuickTime Player, post back with details about the video (at least the file name extension - .mov, .wmv, or whatever) and we'll take it from there.

Error on mac book and imac

The server “server iMac” may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again. I get this message when I turn on My imac or macbook. I connected them to transfer files and now i cannot get rid of the error message. How do I fix it?

Need help transferring Music Files & Playlist from Mac Book to iMAC

I am having difficulty transferring my music files and playlists from my Macbook to my iMAC. All of the music goes over well but the playlists, comments and ratings do not. Any assistance in this area would be greatly appreciated.

Copy the entire \Music\iTunes\ folder from your MacBook to your iMac.
The link posted by WoggleDog deals only with moving the iTunes music folder on one computer to a different location to use on that same computer.

I am a new apple user. I just bought a mac book and iMac as well as the air port extreme base station (AEBS). I am presently using the AEBS w/my PC to get help.
I have tried to get both of my macs to scan, rescan to find the AEBS but they say one doesn't exist. I have restored the AEBS to its factory settings w/a hard reset an still no readings. Yes, the airport communication port is on.
It seems w/my PC it is plug and play something I would have expected w/apple, especially w/ their own products. My desk top and lap top PC's did not have any problem getting on line. I can only imagine if I did not have a PC to get on the internet I would be SOL.
Does anyone in cyberspace have any ideas what I need to do to get up and running? I hope I don't have some of the problem w/itunes as described in other communications. When I was hard wired via an ethernet connection to the macs all was well.

When you say that does that mean in network settings on the macbook and/or the iMac you have gone in and turned on each respective Airport? If so, does it not list any available networks in your area? If so, you need to tell it which to connect with.
Go to your System Preferences > Network > Airport and be sure that it is turned on.
While there you may wish to tick the "Show AirPort status in menu bar" box, makes it a little easier to know current status, and find networks.
If the AEBS is working at all, both macbook and iMac should have no problem finding it.
Once it does, you can use Airport Utility to configure as you wish.

DVDPlayer not recognizing DVD. I have an IMAC (10.7.4) using DVDPlayer (vers. 5500.26.11) and will not recognize/play a dvd movie...it thinks it is a blank dvd. The dvd movie plays fine on my Mac Book Pro (10.6.8) on the Pro's DVDPlayer (vers.5.4).

When the DVD is in the drive (and DVD players is open) click on File>get disk info.

So I have a Mac Book Pro with a bootcamp Windows 8. I dual monitor on the Mac side with my Mid 2011 iMac through my mini display port via thunder bolt cable. In my perfect world, I would be able to switch to the Windows side and have the iMac mirror or extend my windows display for my gaming pleasure, etc. I'm not sure if it's just a simple driver or that it cannot be done. Waking my iMac when I want to connect my Mac Book Pro

When my iMac is awake and I click on Connect to Server, the connection is instant. However, when it's asleep, no go. Is there anyway to wake up the Imac from my Mac Book?
