Mac Book won't recognize new drive

I have a Mac Pro 2.66 with 5 gig of RAM. I just purchased a 500 gig SATA 3 Seagate Barracuda from Newegg. When I install it my Mac Pro won't start at all. I get the "no" sign. I followed the directions and I checked the specifications and I thought this would work. I have plugged it in to ports 2. 3. and 4 with the same results. What am I doing wrong.
thanks

So your regular boot drive is in bay 1, and you have tried the new one in 2 3 and 4?
Does it still boot up OK if you take the new drive out altogether or has something gone sick on your boot drive?
One of the standard things for hardware changes is resetting the PRAM, (restart holding apple, alt, P and R keys, hold keys down till after the third chime) but I have never had to do that when putting a new hard drive in. I would try this but wonder if the new drive is faulty.

  • Trouble replacing hard drive--MacBook won't recognize new drive

The HDD in my wife's black MacBook (2007, I think) won't boot up. I've run Disk Utility and have decided it's pretty much dead. I have a Carbon Copy backup, so the data is fine.
I've tried replacing the drive twice now, and the MacBook simply won't "see" the new drives. When I install the drive, nothing shows up in Disk Utility (run either from the install disc or the Carbon Copy backup drive in a USB enclosure).
The new drives are formatted (I even copied the bootable backup to one of them), and the computer sees them just fine if I install them in a USB enclosure and hook them up that way. When I put them in the computer, though, no dice. Her old, corrupted HDD still showed up in Disk Utility when I reinstalled it, but the new drives don't...
What am I doing wrong?!? What else can I try?

Well, I'm not too surprised with the WD drive, but am with the Seagate. I've installed numerous Seagates without ever having a problem. Most recently two XT500 hybrids in two MBPs. The WD drives on the other hand have proven problematic especially the Blue models.
In any event the problem could be jumpers or firmware configuration. The WD drive may be pre-configured to work on SATA-II 3.0 Gb/s busses, but the laptop only has a 1.5 Gb/s bus. So the drive's configuration may have to be changed. I don't believe that should be a problem with the Seagate drive, so I'm not sure what the problem with it would be.
I would contact each manufacturer's tech support to see if they can help sort things out for you. The fact that both drives work in an external enclosure does help a little since the interface cards mask certain pins on the drive that don't pass through to the internal hardware. Whatever that may be could be why the drives aren't being detected.

  • Replaced Hard Drive, iTunes Won't Recognize New Drive

I had my 60+G of music files stored on an external drive, and it died. Someone more tech savvy than I copied the files from my iPod to a new drive, and they are all there. However, after I changed the iTunes folder location in Prefernces to look to the new drive I still get the *!%!! exclamation points!!!
I can look for individual tracks and pull them up easily enough, but I don't want to do this 16,577 times!
Did I miss a step? I left "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" checked.
Any help would be tremendously appreciated on Thanksgiving Day.....

    Hi Chris
Thank you for your help sorry it has taken me so long to reply to you.
I solved my problem with Itunes gift card after many frustrating hours. I went to purchase another song it did the same thing as before (went straight to the billing page) but this time I hit a credit card icon it asked me to bring up details; I deliberately entered wrong numbers so forth and so on. I deleted all the credit card details and hit NONE and I found I could then exit the page. That action seemed to trigger a correction for purchase; and I could then download without too much trouble.

  • My Mac Book won't recognize my external hard drive

I currently have an external hard drive that I'm connecting to a usb port and nothing happens. I can see that the lights on the actual hard drive are on and it's spinning but the mac isn't showing up as an available drive.

Go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and see if the drives show in the left column. Also from the Finder under the Apple/About This Mac/More Info select USB in the left column. Is the HD list there?
    Is the hard drive new?
Is there and OS on it?
Do other peripherals work from the hub?
Will it work when plugged in direct?

  • How do I move a back up to another external drive and how does the Mac Book then find the new back up?

how do I move a back up to another external drive and how does the Mac Book then find the new back up?
I currently have the back up on a Time Capsule, I want to move it from the Time Capsule to another external hard drive.

Did you read the link to the Pondidni website?  You will have to select the Time Machine HDD for the new MBP and the old one in System Preferences>Time Machine:
    Ciao.

  • How to install Elements8 (on disc) on new Mac Book Pro with no disc drive?

How can I install Elements 8 (on disc) on my new Mac Book Pro with no disch drive?

Copy the contents of the Elements 8 in a pen drive(from a Mac that has the capability) and then copy the contents to your disk(on the new machine i.e. Mac book Pro) and run the installer. If this is not possible you can download the installer directly from here.
    Thanks

Have you tried uninstalling and re-installing iTunes and all other Apple software to see if that makes a difference?  Use the exact instructions in this article.

  • Mac won't recognize new color ink cartridge in printer

I just changed out my color ink cartridge on my HP printer when it ran out, whilst my printer recognized the new cartridge right away and printed out test pages, the Mac still won't recognize it. The message I get is "Color Print Cartridge Out of Ink". I have tried clicking on everything including Calibrate, Test, Clean etc, they all give me the same message, I can't get past it. Help!

Yes I have done that several times. I have also deleted the printer from printer setup utility and reloaded it. I have also connected the printer to an old laptop of mine and it printed there with no problems. However back on the Mac, it just won't let me print, the same message keeps coming up. Very frustrated...

  • Disabled NTFS-3G External HD now Mac won't recognize the drive

    Hi,
I recently unmounted my WD External HD from the NTFS-3G preference pane, now my Mac is unable to recognize the drive.  When I open Disk Utility the drive is there but i am unable to do anything with it.
How do I re-mount the drive to NTFS-3G and have the Mac read it again.  I tried uninstalling NTFS-3G, reinstalling it.  Removed files from the system folder. Even uninstalled and re-installed MacFuse.
I am stuck as to how to make the make recognize the drive again like before.
    Any suggestions?
I am running Mac OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.
    Thanks

make sure you have the exact path written correctly. If you can, show what the filename is in itunes, and the filename when you are looking at the song files (i.e. through my comuter). Make sure these are the same, and that they are all usable itunes formats.

  • Computer Won't Recognize Hard Drive

I wanted to do a clean install of OS 10.5.  Wiped hard drive using Tech Tool Pro 4.  Now computer won't recognize hard drive during install.  When it asks to what volume I want to install the OS, the screen is blank.  This is a new one on me.
Anyone have any ideas?  Thank you.

Boot to the Installer/Utilities DVD, but DO NOT Install.
Answer only the "what language" question if presented, and wait a quarter minute for the MenuBar to be drawn. Choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu or the Installer menu.
Use Disk Utility to Erase the drive again. Be sure you are getting Options GUID partition map.
Then use Disk Utility to partition the drive to one partition, Mac OS X Extended (Journaled).
Select the drive and choose Mount. It should not produce an error. Now you are good to go on the Install.

  • How can i get my mac book pro to recognize a JVC camcorder?

How can I get my mac book pro to recognize a JVC camcorder using a Sony CAMERA USB cord??

Gotta say thank you — again.  Sorry the posts were spread out over more than one location.    I'll check and see if Third Party Software is considered a "peripheral", maybe that would have been a better single thread choice?
Definitely news we can use and the reference link is appreciated.
OT ~ We keep becoming more and more aware of how easy it is to lose one's bearings when it comes to keeping up with info tech.  My husband and I are both official members of the geezer set and have been out of the work force for some years.  You really do pick up so much just by being in the environment where people are using things to get work done.  A couple of old MP3 players, PPC G5, and a vintage Inspiron 3800 that someone didn't want any more is about it.  No cell phone, no iPod, no iPad, no home wireless network, no streaming media.  Fixed income.  So we do with what we can as long as we can.  If we could get by without that Intel processor, we'd probably make do with what we've got.  On the other hand, we've really wanted a notebook for a very long time and have to admit that needing to upgrade to accomodate my husband's project is pretty much just the "reason" we need.  I really mean it when I say that we are beyond appreciative that users take the time to share info and patiently educate those of us who fall into the "slow tech" category.

  • I set up my new computer using the apple ID i always use, and then later migrated all my files from my old mac book to the same new one, but under a different user (same ID). how do i consolidate the two users on my new mac book?

i set up my new computer using the apple ID i always use, and then later migrated all my files from my old mac book to the same new one, but under a different user (same apple ID). how do i consolidate the two users on my new mac book?

Well if you use the Finder Go menu to Computer, a window opens up double click on your boot drive and then on Users folder, open the other user folder and open Public and drop your files into DropBox
When you do this it will copy them and change the permissions and user assigned to it, so log into the other user and place them into your respective normal folders.
Once you have all your files over and don't need the old user, use System Preferences > Accounts to delete it if you wish, however it's good two Admin accounts on the machine in case something bad happens in the other. Some people for security reasons on use a Standard account for most uses and a emergency Admin account.
One can still do most Admin things in Standard user.

  • IMac with Mavericks won't recognize new 60D

iMac with Mavericks won't recognize new 60D

No drivers are required on the Mac to use the camera.  The Mac will natively recongize the camera.
You can install Canon's supplemental software or you can use the Apple provided software or 3rd party software.
However... when you connect a camera to a Mac and it recognizes the camera, you *can* configure what you want the computer to launch.  By default, a Mac will usually launch iPhoto.
If you open iPhoto (do this EVEN if you don't want to use iPhoto) then go into iPhoto -> Preferences and look at the "General" category.  You'll see an option that reads:  "Connecting camera opens:" with a selection menu next to it.  You can use that menu to pick what you want your Mac to do, then close and quite iPhoto.
When connecting the camera to the computer, do the following:
    Turn the camera off
Use the supplied USB cord to attach the camera to the computer (some caveats here... I'll mention them below).
Power the camera on after it's attached.
About those caveats on step 2.
The reason I say "use the supplied USB cord" instead of use any USB cord is because if you're like me... you've got LOTS of USB cords laying around.  Some of these come with devices that use USB for charging purposes.  And some of those USB cables ONLY bother to wire the power supply pins and not the data transfer pins.  In other words... it looks like a normal cable, but wont actually allow for data transfer.   You will need to take care to make sure you're using a proper cable.
Next I should caveat the use of USB hubs.  Whenever you're having a problem with a computer not recognizing a USB device, it's a good idea to disconnect extraneous USB devices that have nothing to do with your issue AND if there's a USB "hub" involved... bypass the hub and connect the camera directly to a USB port on the computer itself.
I use a USB hub and this particular hub is reliable... but truthfully I had to buy three different hubs before I found one that worked reliably.  I've discovered there are a lot of flakey hubs on the market.  When in doubt... bypass the hub.  If you find that you can get your computer to recognize your camera on a consistent basis if you bypass the hub then you can direct your attention to finding a reliable hub.
That's the end of the caveats.
I wrote a response to a user with a similar issue in which I detail the steps to use the Mac's System Information utility to determine if the camera is showing up as connected to the camera.  You can find that post here:
