Mac boot loader problem

Hi,
I am having a trouble with my Mac Mini. I tried to setup windows in my mac using Bootcamp. I partitioned my hard-disk using bootcamp and give 50GB space for widnows. when i pressed the install button it just restarted my computer and then a blank screen.
Neither i can login in my Mac not my windows is installing. It just a blank black screen. If i remove the external DVD driver it ask me to connect a installtion disk and press enter. I did hold down the menu/option key after restart my mac but it's not working and for that i can't login in the boot option. I am using A4Tech keyboard with my mac mini.
Please help me, how can I get my OS X back to the previous position.

When you "setup windows in my mac using Bootcamp" did you maybe think that was going to install some version of Windows for you? Because it sounds as if you thought it would, but it doesn't. All it does is give you a dedicated partition on your Mac's hard drive onto which you can install Windows. Please read this:

  • Boot Loader Problem(rEFIt & GRUB/LILO)

    Hi,
    I'm planning to "triple boot" my iMac with "Mac SL, Win 7, & openSUSE". But installing the "GRUB/LILO" makes my origanel boot loader rEFIt cannot work directly.
    I have to select "Win 7/openSUSE" from the rEFIt, and select "WIn 7/openSUSE" again (from GRUB/LILO).
    Any suggestion for fixing the problerm so I can boot straight to the OSes?

    Boot from the solaris dvd in to singe user mode, mount the system under /a and run the instalgrub command in the shell:
    /sbin/installgrub -m /boot/grub/stage1 /boot/grub/stage2 /dev/rdsk/c?d?s? (whatever your drive is).
    Maybe make a backup copy of /a/boot/grub/menu.lst, I cant remember if it gets over written that way you can copy it back if necessary.

  • Latitude E5440 - Truecrypt Boot Loader Problems

    I've been using Truecrypt for many years on Latitude D  and E Series laptops and never had a problem until we upgraded to E5440's.  Now I continually get Truecrypt boot loader errors.
    I've tried versions 7.1 and 7.1a and FDE as well as just encrypting the System Partition.  What happens is that when the computer is started up, I get a black screen with a white blinking cursor.
    The temporary fix is easy.  I boot off the Truecrypt Rescue disk and Repair the Truecrypt Boot Loader.  This works for several days and then it happens again.
    I am lost as to a solution, but I believe it might involve one of the following:
    1. Hybrid Hard Drives.  These E5440's have a Samsung 500GB hybrid drive in them.  I am wondering if some file or component of Truecrypt is being put on the Flash drive component of the HD and it becomes unavailable at boot up.
    2. Closing the lid of the laptop instead of shutting it down for transport. 
    If you've had similar problems or have any insight into this issue, I would love to get your feedback.

  • CPU heat & win XP boot/load problem

    I have been experencing 2 big problems with my new set setup.
    First one is high temp are being reported for the CPU.  I have stock heatsink installed on the CPU. According to speedfan, idle temps around 40 - 45 C and on load temp goes all the up over 60, around 61-63. MSI core cell (ran it seprately) reports about the same, but the high it had was 65-66C. I had arctic cooling HSF installed but took out since it was giving me high temp around 70C on load, so I took it out. Possibly I couldn't apply the thermal paste (the one that it came with) properly, tried 4 times and seems like the arctic Heatsink isn't working right anymore. did run a Prime95 test for 8 hours and it finished with 0 errors/warning. The system seems stable after it loads up.
    Second problem is booting up win xp. Frequently window XP goes go the loading window XP screen and after that it crashes. After a couple crashes it does boot into win XP though. Like mentioned, after win XP is loaded it is stable. Also I have noticed if I restart windows XP after sucessful boot, it reboot without crashing. However, if I even turn of the comp for 5-10 mins and boot up, window XP crashes when it trying load again.
    Here are specs that i have right now:
    Athlon 64 3400 socket 754 newcastle
    MSI Neo Platinum with 1.4 verions BIOS
    corsair 512 MB ram
    120 GB ATA seagate HD (main)
    40 GB ATA WD HD (secondary)
    Thermaltake 480w PSU
    Any help would be appericiated!

    Corsair is value ram wiht 2.5 CAS, also don't think that got any problem at all. Like said windows is stable after it loads. Also I think I found the problem with booting, I removed a 2nd old HD that I had in there. Now it is booting properly.
    Now about that temp, I decided to check it out myself. I let prime95 run for 40 mins and let go max temp. This time speedfan showed only max of 58C, while core center showed 62C. I touched the bottom of the heatsink and it was midly warm to hot. I also checked with the temperature sensor that is on my thermaltake case. The LCD on case showed only 40-42C. So could the core temp actaully be 20C warmer? Also another thing I keep on seening people with "K8N Neo Platinum bios 1.5B5", is that a better version of the bios and does help with themp reading??

  • Cannot mount Windows partition with boot loader on Mac OS 10.8

    I took out my hard drive of my Windows 7 PC, which has 3 partitions on it: C drive which contains the OS and the boot loader that the computer boots into, D drive which contains my data, and a third called "System Reserved" a few megabyte in size that I have no idea what so ever what it does besides that I cannot modify or delete it, which probably means that it is important.  Now I put the hard drive inside an USB 3.0 enclosure and I am trying to mount this hard drive onto my OS X Lion Macbook air.  Something strange is happening, in that the computer takes about 30 seconds or more to detect the drives presence, and then it just freezes after that.  On the initial try, the system actually successfully launched DiskUtility, and I can see the drive mounted in the list of detected drives and 3 partitions "SD1, SD2, SD3" under that drive, but after  repeating the procedure a few more times, nothing seems to be happening after the system freeze.
    Anyone have any idea what's going on?  I am trying to access the data partition for my stuff.
    I have Tuxera NTFS installed, and I should probably also mention that my Macbook Air is mid 2011 with only USB 2.0 ports.

    Ok, I figured out the freezing part; apparently, I had to connect to the USB port on the left side next to the power supply or the disk does not have enough power and causes the system to crash.  So, now Disk Utility can see the hard drive with no problem.
    But now, the partitions are detected as XFAT format and no volumes are mounted to the desktop.  Disk Utility displays the disk description as:
      Disk Description : INTEL SS DSA2M160G2GC Media  Total Capacity : 160.04 GB (160,041,885,696 Bytes)
      Connection Bus : USB  Write Status : Read/Write
      Connection Type : External  S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported

    Why is the status "not supported"?  How should I go about mounting the data volume so I can access the files on my Mac?

    Hi Mac turning on problems, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
    *Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

    Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
    (Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
    The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
    Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
    If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
    If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
    May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...

    That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
    If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

  • Help! Mac boot problem!

    When my Mac boots, a little bar appears below the apple logo. Then, the bar fills up very slowly. I know the bar isn't the progress of my Mac booting, because after the bar fills up and disappears, the spinning wheel goes on for like another 20 seconds. the Mac actually boots, and there is nothing wrong, but because of the little bar that shows up, my Mac takes 15 minutes to boot, and its a waste of battery and time. Please help me get out of this problem. Thanks!

    That means the directory of the boot volume is damaged and a repair is being attempted. If it happens repeatedly, you should assume that there's a hardware fault in the drive, the internal cable, or the logic board. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. Back up all data before you go.

  • Problems unlocking the boot loader of xperia z3

    i'm trying to unlock the boot loader of my xperia z3, i'm following the instructions on sony's site but i'm stuck: i connect the phone to the pc in fastboot mode (blue light on), then i open the command prompt window in the platform-tools folder of android sdk, but when i type fastboot devices nothing happens. If i try to enter my unlock code i get "waiting for device" forever. 
    Any help?

    This is a clean install using April 01 ISO with minimal or no modifications. I have tried to follow wiki as precisely as possible. I am not sure what I am missing. Thanks.

    I used March ISO instead of April ISO and it worked flawlessly. There is some problem with April ISO where efibootmgr and UEFI Shell1/2 fail with ASSERT_EFI_ERROR (status = device error).
    I have removed both /boot/EFI/boot and /boot/EFI/arch. I now have two entries one on vmlinuz-linux on 1024 Fat 32 partition which works and second one boot/vmlinuz-linux on 20G / partition which fails and takes me to rootfs. Also refind isn't showing UEFI shells that  I have in /boot/EFI/tools/Shells.

    Thanks for suggesting to try older ISO.
    UPDATE:- Most recent ls -R /boot and my refind.conf. Reading over Rod Smith's rEFInd documentation has helped me clean up a little more and set up a good boot manager with automatic kernel detection and shell. I do want to get rid of drivers list that shows itself up along with kernel. Next is to tackle menu entry. Thanks.

    2. Copy the error loading message "c2960-lanbasek9-mz.150-2.SE2.bin" (without quotes). Paste it in the "search tab" 
    left side middle-corner then click the search zoom icon.
    3. Locate your "c2960-lanbasek9-mz.150-2.SE2.bin" file. see below

    Hi everyone,
    I'v researched a lot about installing Win on Mac but I still got a problem when everything seems to be fine.
    I got a Macbook Pro Retina, Late 2013 with OSX Mavericks and Bootcamp 5 installed on. And for installing windows, I already got an empty 8GB USB Drive formatted as MS-DOS (FAT32). And I've prepared Windows 8.1 ISO in my Downloads folder.
    During my last effort, I opened Bootcamp Assist and then Chose the options: "Create Windows 7 or later version installation disk" and "Download the latest windows support software from Apple". Then I chose my Windows 8.1 ISO location and my destination. When it finished ,I was expecting it to run windows setup. But it closed and nothing happened
    When I opened BootCamp again, only the first two options were available as before and "Install or remove Windows 7 or later" wasn't.
    Now ,what do I have to do exactly? (NOTE: I'm not a professional. So please answer in a simple way. )
    Should I restart the Mac and Hold OPTION while booting to run Windows setup? I was thinking about it but I thought I might screw it up all. So I decided to ask it here to be sure.

    Prepare your Mac for Windows
    Boot Camp Assistant helps prepare your Mac for Windows by creating a new partition for Windows and then starting the Windows installer. Optionally, you can install Windows using an external USB drive that contains a Windows ISO image downloaded from Microsoft and Windows support software.
    Important: If you’re using a portable computer, connect the power adapter before continuing.
    Insert an external drive into the USB port on your Mac and keep it inserted while you install Windows and Windows support software.
    Open Boot Camp Assistant, located in the Other folder in Launchpad.
    Select the option to install Windows, select other options you need, then click Continue.
    Here are the other options you can choose:
    If you want to install Windows from an external USB drive and you have a Windows ISO image, select the option to copy the image to an external USB drive. If this option isn’t available, your Mac doesn’t support installing Windows from an external USB drive.
    If you haven’t already downloaded the Windows support software for your Mac, select the option to download it. In a later step, you’ll install the Windows support software on your Windows partition.
    Follow the onscreen instructions for the options you selected.
    When you’re asked to create a Windows partition, specify a partition size. If you have multiple hard drives in your computer, you can select a different hard drive and create a single partition on that drive, so that the drive is solely used for Windows.
    Note: You can’t resize the partition later.
    If you need help determining the best size for your Windows partition, refer to your Windows installer documentation. For Windows 8, create a partition that is at least 30 GB.
    In a later step, you’ll format the Windows partition.
    If you are using an installation disc for the 64-bit version of Windows, insert it into the optical drive in your Mac or the external optical drive. Otherwise, keep the external USB drive with the 64-bit version of Windows inserted.
    Click Install.
    Boot Camp Assistant creates the Windows partition, restarts your Mac, then opens the Windows installer.

Just recently have purchased the iPhone.  When I got my iPod I didn't have a Mac, but now I do.  I am really into my iPhone, so now I want to make sure that I don't do anything wrong. So can I connect my iPhone to both my PC and my Mac without it getting mixed signals and stop working.  I have no music on my Mac but plan to download music into iTunes on it.  So can I download music from both computers without problems onto my iPhone?

    No. You can only music to your iPhone from one computer at a time.  If you try to load music onto it from a 2nd computer, it will erase the current content on the iPhone and replace it with whats in the iTunes library you are connected to,

  • Beige G3 boot from **** problem; open firmware issues; bad motherboard?

    Dear all,
    I'm having huge boot/startup problems with my beige G3 that had been happily running OSX 10.3.9, but for purposes of this discussion we can (mostly) revert to OS 9. Originally, the machine was a G3 @300; was upgraded more than a year ago to a ZIF G4 @500.
    To make a long story short, it won't boot from any hard drives, will not boot from any OS X CD, and will only occasionally boot from a 9.x startup CD (whether Apple or Norton Utilities). I think it's an open firmware issue, possibly caused by a bad motherboard (rev. 2).
    All this started happening after I used techtool pro, but I think that's coincidence (even though I acknowledge that, for cops and computer users, there are no coincidences.) Also, as discussed below, I'm having the same problems with an HD that wasn't even in the computer when all these things began.
    Here are some of the things I've done.
    --repeatedly reset PRAM, both with key combinations and removing battery. The only time it will boot from a 9.x CD is after resetting PRAM.
    --removed all add-on PCI cards.
    --removed additional VRAM
    --removed all memory cards and tried replacing one at a time.
    --disconnected both existing hard drives and replaced with an older OS 9.x hard drive (approx 60 mb) that I'd used before. Also tried different ribbon cables.
    --unplugged floppy drive
    --disconnected PCI ATA disk controller that I'd been using for running a large (1.8 gb) hard drive.
    --regarding open firmware: readenv usually shows totally normal default AND installed settings. Using reset-all works fine -- at least it makes the machine reboot, but doesn't solve the problem. reset-nvram does NOT work -- says it's an "unknown word."
    --using startup keys like holding down the option key, or shift key, or X key or cmd-option plus two others I can't remember, has no effect. Again, after I've tried any kind of reboot, the ONLY way to get the C-key at startup to boot the CD is by resetting the pram (key combination). Otherwise, the usual result of these experiments is a dark screen on startup -- nothing at all (and the LCD monitor tells me "no input.")
    --regarding OSX: sometimes (and I emphasize sometimes) I can get the machine to start booting from an OSX 10.2 CD, but it won't complete the process. Sometimes I get a "prohibited" (as in no-parking, no-smoking) icon; sometimes it will start booting (grey screen, OS X Apple icon), then crash (horizontal grey and white jagged bars); sometimes it will show the OS 9 start icon (the tiny smiling Mac SE), but not boot at all.
    --when I get the mac successfully booted with an OS 9.x CD (again, this works sometimes, but not always), the old hard drive with two partitions does show on the desktop and can be accessed. Using either disk repair or Norton Utilities shows the 9.2 system partition on the hard drive to be fine. But if I go to the startup disk control panel, confidently set the 9.2 partition as my startup disk, then reboot, there's no change. It won't boot and I'm back at square one.
    --even when I do get successfully booted with 9.x, the machine will still occasionally crash for no reason -- ie when I'm moving a Window.
    --the only thing I haven't done is slowed down the processor. It's a ZIF G4 bought more than a year ago from XLR8 your Mac. I'm running at the default 500 mhz, and it's never given me any trouble.
    So I think it's a bad motherboard or ROM. Thoughts?

    The beige Mac is now operating happily again. My original tentative diagnosis remains the same (although still tentative): corrupted PRAM from bad battery, compounded by bad cables that wrote corrupted data to hard drives, and also (possibly) allowing Tech Tool Pro (a utility that I now regard with deep suspicion) to create a "virtual" startup partition.
    A few things I've learned along the way that hopefully may be useful:
    --remember that the Ex Post Facto utility can be used to help OS X startup, not just installation. This applies to hard drives, emergency CDs, installation CDs, etc. If you can boot into any working hard drive partition (OS 9 or a backup OS 10), then run Ex Post Facto (same program runs on either OS 9 or X -- don't ask me how) and tell it what system you want to start up from. Also, the utility has sometimes told me that the startup extensions on the disc that I wanted to boot up from were bad, and offered to fix them (which works).
    --at least on my Mac (beige, v. 2 motherboard), resetting the CUDA button, resetting the PRAM, resetting Open Firmware and "draining" the memory by unplugging the computer and disconnecting the battery for several hours ALL DO DIFFERENT THINGS.
    Specifically, if I'm having trouble booting (from a hard drive or a CD), the FIRST thing I do is restart and resetting the PRAM on the fly -- holding down command, option, P and R at startup, and waiting for the chimes (preferably at least 3-4 times).
    If I do that and DON'T hear the chimes, that's my cue for my SECOND action -- restarting into open firmware (command, option O and F keys on startup). That should bring up the black text on white background open firmware screen. View other posts or apple support for details, but if you do PRINTENV and see a bunch of weird gibberish after the default/installed lists, you know that it was messed up and you need to clear it through reset nvram and reset all commands. Be aware some of these commands do or do not work depending upon what version of Open Firmware you have.
    After I've rebooted with Open Firmware, then on restart I should be able to reset the PRAM on the fly. If that works, then either let the machine run and see what happens, or hold down the C command and see if it will boot from the CD
    Usually, if I've fixed everything as above, the machine will boot into whatever version of OS 9 it finds on a hard drive. That's fine with me -- at that point, use Ex Post Facto to reboot into your OS X. (Before I forget: I used the shareware startup CD creator program BootCD to make an emergency boot CD based on OS 10.2.8 (which theoretically will support a beige mac in native fashion) and Disk Warrior, the god of disk repair utilities. Even though the CD should boot just by holding down the C key on startup, it doesn't -- but if I use Ex Post Facto to boot it, no problems (although the process is very slow -- be patient). Then I can fix almost anything using Disk Warrior.)
    If none of the above works, then I'll try resetting the CUDA (on my beige minitower, it's a very small black button inconveniently located between a PCI slot and the side of the computer housing). Hold it down for 15 seconds. That should REALLY clear the PRAM. I know this does something different from the previous steps because this is the only action (except the battery disconnect -- next) that clears the date and time from the memory.
    If all else fails, I will unplug the computer and disconnect the battery, then push the CUDA button for 15 seconds and let the machine sit overnight.
    One final finding -- I thought I'd fixed everything, but both my hard drives suddenly quit working, I discovered that during all this repeated connect/disconnect of things, one of the male pins inside one of the connectors on my Acard ATA PCI card had broken off. Not good. Fortunately, the card had a second connector, which works fine. And I did some extensive shaking of the computer to make sure (I hope) that the broken pin hadn't landed on a circuit board.
    All this took more than two weeks, and the advice of this board was much appreciated. Now I'm on to my next adventure -- trying to figure out why a combo Firewire/USB PCI card won't mount an external drive on Firewire, but will on USB. I've tried two cards with same result -- but a Firewire-only card works just fine.)

  • Bootcamp not showing up in boot loader

    Today I needed to resize my Windows Vista Ultimate partition for work, so I used Disk Utility to crate an image from the partition. After that I used Boot Camp Assistant to remove the partition, and then create a larger partition. After this was done I went back into Disk Utility and restored the partition using the image I created earlier.
    In OS X I can mount the partition and access the files and it seems everything was restored correctly. When I restart my machine and hold down the Option key to bring up the boot loader, Bootcamp is no longer an option. The only partition I can boot from is HD.

    Did you actually Install a version of Windows into that Boot Camp Partition? It doesn't sound like you did.
    You'll need a copy of Windows 7 or 8, 64bit, and a valid license key code for whatever version you plan on installing.
