Mac can't read GPT ?
Hi,
I'm fixing my fiends USB drive.

I did manage to fix GUID headers with gpt_surgeon.pym but then mac did got messy, and sth happend,
Now Disk Utility Tool show's only 2 partitions out of three...
I do have a copy of my gpt header, and i did restore it with gdisk, but eventhough I can see partitons, mac (diskutil) still sees only 2 of them

Is it possible to run a mac on a windows based server? We have a server based on Windows 7 in our school, and our techies are reluctant to let me buy a mac as they say macs can only read a number of folders deep, which would preclude me from accessing shared folders on our servers. Is this true, and is there a way round this? I would eventually like to get a suite of macs, but because all our resources are on the server, I have to be able to access them.
Thanks for any help,
MikeI have found that both Linux and Mac (unix) are capable of reading "deep" folders while win 32 will have issues, your it people are clearly wrong. I run a network with both win/mac. And as long as the win servers/pc's that have shares are set to allow apple file sharing in their folder properties. And the macs are set to allow smb there should absolutely no trouble with you accessing anything across the platforms, heck, from a Mac to a win pc on some occasions you don't even need to include a "domain" name to log on to, and you can create aliases and make your own shortcuts etc... So you don't have to manually connect each time you boot up etc... But that's all personal preferences I suppose.
All I can tell you is that, I do it on a daily basis managing a small business. So your answer is yes you can. -

Mac can't read a Windows CD...
I downloaded a couple of Mac OS X updates on my Vista PC, burned them onto a CD (type CD-R) and took them to the Mac. After spinning up the CD, the following msg appears: "You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read. ......."
I used the "mastered" burn option - as that claims to have the best compatibiity with other systems.
What do I need to do to ensure the Mac can read the CD?Because I chose the "Mastered" format, there is no option to close / finalise. Here is a relevant description from Windows Help:
"Mastered discs do not need to be closed; they are automatically compatible with other computers, so you will never see an option to close a session that you have made with the Mastered format." -
PDF File downloaded from Mac Can't Read From Windows 7
Hi,
I am now doing a research, and every time when I copy the reference paper in PDF format from Mac to a flash drive, it could not be read from Windows at the university lab. Usually some pages of the file was missing. This really cause me a pain. Please help me. Thanks...
MaxAlmost all flash drives are formatted as a Windows drive. When you copy almost any file to the flash drive two different files are created. One corresponds to the data fork of the Mac file and the second is a resource fork. When viewed from Windows the resource fork has the same name as the original file but it preceded by a period. This resource fork file should be ignored. The real file as far as Windows is concerned is the data fork file.
Now if the file you are moving to Windows can be opened and is missing pages, then that is not the fault of Reader or the Mac OS. But is related to how you are creating or obtaining the file. -
Moving iTunes Folder to a new Mac, Can't read iTunes library.itl
I'm replacing a Mac Pro (2,1) with OS 10.7.5, iTunes 11.4 with a 2012 Mac Mini with OS 10.9.3, iTunes 11.1.5. When I move the iTunes folder containing the iTunes Library to the new Mac, I get the error message "the file iTunes library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes", which is of course true. I really don't want iTunes 12. Is there a way to move iTunes 11.4 from the old Mac to the new Mac?
Hi, gokart-mozart.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
You will need to rebuild your iTunes library file in order to open an older version of iTunes. Below, I have included the article that walks you through this process. Start with the section labeled Re-creating the iTunes Library file.

Mac can't read Mac burned DVD but a PC can. Why?
Need a bit of help, I have an archive DVD that was burned a couple of months ago. After the burn I checked to make sure all files were readable. ejected it and popped it back in and had no problems.
This morning popped it in and it wont mount. This was a working DVD a couple months ago. It has no scratches or finger prints.
It will not mount on any macs.
MacBook Pro
Mac Pro
G4
G5
imac and so on
here is the kicker, it WILL mount on a PC.
any thoughts or suggestions?Had the same trouble a few weeks ago. Try repairing Permissions on your System drive with Disk Utility and restarting. That solved the problem for me.

I have a Seagate Drive that I'm hoping to copy some movies from my Mac onto (because it only has a 512 SSD and I'd rather keep that empty and handy for more readily needed files) but it won't work. It shows up as a drive when connected (with the orange USB drive icon popping up) and is appropirately labeled "FreeAgent Drive", but when I try to copy files onto it it won't work. There are already windows files on there, such as some windows backups and lot's and lot's of pictures and videos. However, I have several USBs which already have windows files on them (namely movies, music, and other stuff) and copying and stuff works fine. Why won't it work with this hard drive and would work with USBs? Please help me out here guys, I am not experienced with Hard disks and formatting and stuff like that. 10 points for whoever helps me out the most. Thanks.
We will need to reformat your EXT, but it will then work on both Mac and Win
Connect the drive to your Mac, open disk utility
Go to the partiton tab and select '1' ... format should be ExFAT ... in options select MBR
Format the drive
It should now work on both OSs; report back -
My i-mac can't read commercial CDs -
after attempting to read them, they are ejected. recordable CD's work ok, so it doesn't seem to be an driver problem.
I running O/S lion and the Imac is about 4 years old.
anyone help with this please?I suspect part of the drive is giving out, Rad & Write use different voltages & circuits. CDs & DVDs also use different Lasers.
Only a couple of things to try...

I have an external hard drive, from Iomega. that I can open and see my files. However, I cannot copy or save any file to it. On my PC I have it says that is possible to read and write in it, but in my Mac, it says I can only read. can somebody help me?
Also, Im a photographer, so I like to name a lot of files at the same time (used to do in on PC and it was very usefull.) cannot find out how to do it on my Mac. Really appretiate if some one can give me a solution! ThanxYour drive is formatted with the NTFS file system. OS X can read but not write to the NTFS file system. There are third party drivers available that claim to add the ability to OS X to write to an NTFS partition. I have not tried them and don't know if they work.
The only file system that OS X and Windows can both write to natively is the FAT32 file system. -

Can not read or write to mac hard drive error
When attempting to transfer music files from an external usb harddrive formatted in windows into Itunes, I can only successfully import a small fraction of the music, and then its stops with a error, that the Mac HD can not read or write files.
It's possible the file names have some 'funky' characters in them that the Mac doesn't like ?
What format is the external drive ?
