Try to update to the latest Firefox 17.0.x version.

  • Cannot open some PDFs on Macbooks

Hi folks! I have Macbook (2008) and Macbook Pro (2010) and both cannot open some PDFs. I got an error message 'there was an error opening this document. the file is damaged and could not be repaired'. I tried to use Mac's Preview, Adobe's Acrobat (9 and 10, with latest updates) and Adobe's Photoshop CS5 - none did work. Both laptops have OSX 10.6.7 with all latest updates. The funny thing is that files work fine in old Adobe Acrobat 6 Pro on Windows XP though before opening it shows a message that the file was created in newer version of software and you should update yours but then it opens the file.
The problem is completely random and I cannot find any correlations with Acrobat's options/settings. Does anyone have any ideas?

Since you say that the file opens in Acrobat 6, why don't you do a Save As in that version to rewrite the file. Then it may work. (Basically, the file sounds corrupted.)

Hi headshot, <br /> Sorry you are having problems.
Are you seeing any error message or notification ? <br />If so what ?
If the page fails to load try clearing Reloading with the Ctrl F5 shortcut to force loading without the old new cached files. If that does not help try cache and clearing cookies for that site.

  • Why Safari 4.0.4 cannot open some web pages?

Safari 4.0.4 cannot open some web pages, while Firefox 3.5.7 works like a charm.
I tried to open http://www.bdnews24.com/bangla/ for which Safari gets stuck (never opens the page, except for the first word of the first line), but Firefox shows the page very well. The same problem happens for some other web sites as well (e.g. http://www.prothom-alo.com/).
(I have Ekushey Bengali AAT fonts, and they are working fine in Firefox and other applications. So this cannot be a font issue.)

    HI,
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1594
Make sure you are running Safari in 32-bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.
In case it could be a font issue in the future this may help.
Try clearing the font cache. In order to do that you need to boot in Safe Mode.
    Shut down your Mac.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator. During startup in Mac OS X v10.4.x or later, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, even if normally you log in automatically. Boot time is a minute or two longer than a normal boot.
After your Mac boots to the Desktop restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.
What this process does... It moves to the Trash all font caches normally stored in /Library/Caches/
Restart your Mac and try Safari.
    Carolyn

I cannot open a website that I could open yesterday. I used a different computer to access the same website, and it worked. How do I fix my computer?

What happens when you try to access the site? Can you access it from a different computer on the same network? Your profile says you have a Mac Pro, but you posted in the MacBook Pro area. If you have a MacBook Pro, can you access the site from another network, such as a public hotspot?

  • Cannot open some links

I clicked a bad page the other day and installed some malware. I [carefully] removed them manually, but perhaps I deleted a wrong registry key. Anyway, I'm left a little bit lame as I cannot open some links or pages, and I cannot restore previous versions
    of Windows.
    Win 7 home
    IE 11
    Issues:
    1. Wikipedia .png images will not respond at all to a left-click. I can open them by right-clicking.
    2.  wordpress.com the reader link and a few other links hang.
    generates the error Line: 4235
== Error: The system cannot find the file specified.
    The line of code is ... if( !window.localStorage ){
    3. System restore would not restore previous versions. It was unchecked in system, and I have since re-enabled it and allocated space. I have not tested it.
    actions performed:
    - Googled for a day and a half
    - tried re-registering dlls
    - checked file associations
    - reset security and settings in IE
    - ran IE with no add ons
    - ran IE in safe mode
    - rolled back to IE 10 and reinstalled IE 11 (with much pain with failing updates needing manual uninstallations)
I am now at a loss at what to try next for the IE issues. Any help or ideas will be appreciated. I'd rather not reinstall or upgrade right now.
    Thanks
    John

    Hi Power Unit.
Considering the machine has been injected by some malware,I suggested you to perform a full scan with the antivirus software in safe mode to have a double check .
According to your description ,it seems that there is something wrong with system files. We can run "sfc /scannow"to have a health check of the system files.
I noticed you have tried to reinstall the Internet Explorer 11 .How did you do that ?
We can run the following command line to uninstall the Internet Explorer 11 and then download it to install it .
    "FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*11.*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /quiet /norestart"
Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-hk/download/internet-explorer-11-for-windows-7-details.aspx
If the issue persists ,we may need to do a in-place upgrade to have a repair .We may lose some configurations. Here is a link for reference :

  • Ipad Dropbox app cannot open some pdf files

my Ipad Dropbox app cannot open some pdf files. The blue download bar appears and when download is complete, the wheel spins and spins and nothing happens.
Some files are password protected. until recently, the password window would open. Now it does not. The wheel just spins and spins and the file does not open.
AN email attachment (pdf) which I opened in Dropbox on my iPhone opens fine.  Files saved in Dropbox from my desktop won't open. This is true for pdf and MSWord files.
    I'm running iOS 7.1.2 (11D257)

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.
Should that fail, you might delete and reinstall the app.

  • I cannot open some pdf files online with Reader XI (like sample forms in Help section).

I cannot open some pdf files online with Reader XI (like sample forms in Help section or IRS.gov or credit card statements).  I have uninstalled Reader XI, cleaned and reinstalled.  I have no problem right-clicking and downloading and then viewing the files.  No problem viewing acrobat files.  I'm runnnig Windows 7,  IE9.     I can acces them through Chrome.

    RESOLVED
I found two suspect programs that were installed within the last 48-hrs that may have caused the problem
    1) - Libre Office - latest update.  This is a fork of Open Office.  (unlikely)
    2) - ManyCam video manipulation software  (likely)
Following info here, I opted to try to open an Adobe PDF file that was on my hard drive.  When I did, it refused and IE10 gave me an ActiveX error (AHA!!).   When I checked the installation of ManyCam, it had installed a version of DirectX that may have over-written the resident versions or disabled them somehow.
I uninstalled ManyCam but left Libre Office's update in place, then I ran a system restore from a point 24-hrs before the installations.
    This resolved the problem 100%.
So, the suggestion here is that there may be one or more program in the wild that is interupting the ActiveX or DirectX systems.  They may be running or installing an older version.  In this case it appears the handlers were broken.
Once the system restore had completed I was able to open Adobe PDF files within my IE10 browser from the Internet as well as open PDF files from my hard drive.
Note that this same issue also clearned up a problem I was having with the Comodo Dragon web browser, which is a fork of the Chrome project.  Once I eliminated the suspect program and ran the system restore all was well.  In the instance of the Comodo browser it was unable to open or reach anything - dead white screen below the menu bar.
So my suggestion would be to take an inventory of recent program installations, remove/uninstall them, run system restore from a date before the suspect programs were added, and see what happens.  In my case that fixed the problem.
