Mac cannot start up Yosemite

hi
i have a Mac with Yosemite, is taking more than an hour to start up, the bar before request login takes an hour and the login window does not show up
i have Yosemite
help !

You could try & see if the computer may eventually start into
Safe Mode or Safe Boot, where you'd hold the Shift key down
for a long time just after startup, and until there is evidence of
the Finder window appearing. Sometimes this can take up to
15 to 10 minutes, depending on several factors.
•OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support
Once into the system, other tests and perhaps Console error
logs from the System could be viewed. You could also try &
see if Disk Utility could repair permissions or repair disk, once
you have the computer running. You may be able to start up
into OS X Utilities on the Recovery mode, to check/repair HDD.
If you get as far as a Gray Screen, and no further, this may help:
•Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup - Apple Support
•OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
More complex & advanced methods of attempting to diagnose & repair
issues on startup can be rather involved and some of the methods do
require a high or greater degree of understanding the Terminal or the
command-line access to the underpinnings of OS X. This goes behind
the scenes where the user interface is not simple or user-friendly...
For those who have read & carefully tried the command line access
and not cause more damage, once learned it can be helpful & direct.
•Mac OS X: How to start up in single-user or verbose mode - Apple Support
Use of command line and Terminal access is not recommended in
general by those who have a problem and only one computer to
learn how to use it; you may have a worse situation due to lack
of experience. So other methods less invasive (disk utility) are the
recommended path; or if problems point to hardware cause, then
the computer would best be taken to an Apple Specialist or genius.
•Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck - Apple Support
So if you can access the computer to get the basic report mentioned
in the above post (etrecheck) that may show someone some clues as
to what may be wrong. However a command line report such as that
which uses terminal commands, is good if read through by someone
who understands what the cryptic details mean.
Hopefully you can post more information because there are several
things that may contribute to your computer's symptoms...
To troubleshoot involves attempting several things to see what works
when working in the blind on resolving problems by rote. However if
you haven't experience in the Terminal or command-line, tread careful.
Good luck & happy computing!

  • Mac cannot start up.

I wanna upgrade my mac tiger to Lion. But i heard the only way is to upgrade to snow leopard 10.6.3 first. So i got my dvd, tried installing, but it says it won't install on my current mackintosh HD. My intel is core 2 duo, memory is 2GB memory, and i've more than 50GB of space.
After ejecting the dvd, my mac now wont start up to desktop. It just displays the apple icon and then shuts down on its own!
    HELP!

Is your SL install DVD a retail version or a gray DVD from another model Mac?

    Hello guys,
since today I have problems with my MacBook Pro, which I bought in May 2012. I cannot start my Mac. When I push the On-button the apple logo appears as normal but nothing more happens. Sometimes I can also logg me in, but the Mac cannot start and boot up. I don´t know whats the problem, yesterday it worked normally but then I installed a new Itunes version and let it load overnight. Today this problem appeared. What can I do?
I hope somebody can help me.

  • Ever since upgrading to Yosemite on my Mac, I can only configure my time capsule via iPhone.  My Mac cannot locate for backup, but CAN find as my internet router.  I have followed all suggestions I can locate and have upgraded to newest version.

Time Capsule in Yosemite can be used for router/internet but Mac cannot locate for backups.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • 2007 Mac Pro (10.6.8) cannot upgrade to Yosemite?

Hi everyone. first time posting. I've just tried to upgrade my Late 2007 Mac Pro desktop to Yosemite (from Snow Leopard 10.6.8) and got this message:
"This version of OS X 10.10 cannot be installed on this computer."
I dug a bit deeper.... and found this:
To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
    MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
So, my question is then how can I upgrade the OS to a late 2007 make and model of Mac Pro? Is there a middle step to upgrade like there was with snow leopard? A quick google search did not turn up much. I've got enough RAM, HDD space, etc. This is the only sticking point.
Is this year model stuck with snow leopard?
Any help would be much appreciated.
    thanks
    clane

You have a Mac Pro 2,1 model which cannot run anything above Lion 10.7.5. You don't have a MP Early 2008 model.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks/Yosemite- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

    Hello,
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

I cannot start bridge (Mac 10.8.2) CS6. States "the operation could not be completed" but if I use another user account it works fine. I have uninstalled and re-installed Creative Suite but no differene.
Are there some logs or cache's that I need to delete or something??
    Please help

but if I use another user account it works fine. I have uninstalled and re-installed Creative Suite but no differene.
Are there some logs or cache's that I need to delete or something??
There are a few things to try but it means the problem is in the account itself. un- and reinstall the Suite will not help if you are not also using the Adobe cleaner tool for this job:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html
Check this and read the instructions carefully and most important, have a back up of your important settings (in Photoshop your custom actions, tool presets, brushes and workspaces and for Bridge the custom output templates and keyword list, to name the most important for me).
If you check your user library (by default hidden per OSX 10.7, use menu Go and press option to reveal this library) Inhere is a folder called Application support and most of those settings are here - User/Library/Application Support/Adobe.
If you copy this folder to a back up location you can always use this to copy the certain wanted parts to the new installed folder.
Also use a check and repair permissions on your start up disk with Apple disk utility or third party software like Cocktail.
And finally since your still on 10.8.2 they just recently released 10.8.3
Usually the update procedure is using the App Store and check software update. BUt in this case it might be useful to find the 10.8.3 Combo Update on the Apple Support section.
You have to download this yourself and then it is a normal update procedure. The combo update does a bit more refreshing for the user account then the normal update.
And if all this is not helping you then you can use the Apple recovery disk to reinstall your system, this is what before was known as an Archive and Install procedure. This creates a new user library while all your custom settings and files are being kept.
But you have to find info for yourself for this and also make sure you have a proper back up of all your important files, but as a wise person you already had done so I believe ?

    See Here for
    Frozen or unresponsive iPhone
Try this first... You will not lose any Data...
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons...

If that does not work... try letting the battery fully drain.
Then Charge for an Hour and try the suggestions again.

  • I cannot install ODX Yosemite over OSX Mavericks as my Mac Book Pro (early 2011) advises that the disc "Mackintosh HD" is used for Time Machine back ups. This is not the case however as I use a separate external HD for this purpose, help please ?!  T
