Mac Changes Date Picture was Taken? Why? Fix?

Please excuse this question if it has been addressed before. I did a search in the forums and didn't find an appropriate answer.
I am a new user to the Mac Pro. I am coming from a Dell, Windows XP. I use Outlook and Gmail (different addresses) for email (both in the Windows environment and now in the OS X environment too).
On my Dell, when I receive a photo as an attachment and save it to my HDD, I can put my cursor over the photo (rollover) and the date the photo was taken will pop up.
On my Mac Pro, when I receive a photo as an attachment and save it to my HDD (pictures folder), the OS changes the date the photo was taken to the date the photo was saved.
Currently, to solve this issue, I am pulling the photos into my Dell so I have the dates preserved but I would REALLY like to be able to just save the photos on my Mac Pro and have the "photo taken" dates not change.
I have tried saving the photos individually and I have tried using the Save All feature, I get the same results either way. I am not viewing the photo attachments before saving them, as soon as I receive them, I save them and then I go to view them (the pictures are from my sons who are currently in South America, not that it matters).
So, what am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Cliff Watson

Thank you for directing me to the Show Inspector feature. Now I know I don't HAVE to save the pictures on my Dell first to preserve the date.
Now, you know when you give someone an inch they want a mile?
Is there a way to view the exif data or use the Inspector feature without having to open each picture individually?
Thank you again, this is a huge help!

  • Is there a way to check the date and time a picture was taken

I would like to be able to view the date and time a picture was taken on my iphone

EXIF Wizard will do the job.  I also created an app that shows date and time.  You can scroll through your photos and automatically see the month and year change as you scroll - then pick a certain photo to see month/day/year and time.

  • Printing the date the picture was taken

Does version 5 of Elements enable the printing of the date a picture was taken on the picture itself? I know that information is included in the picture file, but do not know how to access it for printing on the photo itself.
It would be most convenient if Elements would allow the positioning of the date on the photo - especially if it has been cropped.
I currently use version 4 and have not been able to accomplish this task. If it can be done in 4, please let me know how.
Incidentally, I am not interested in typing a text field on the photo type of solution to this problem.
    Thank you,
    Lloyd Erickson

    Lloyd,
    1. Set up a new document, 1000px x 300 px, resolution 300 ppi, white background
    2. Make sure black is the foreground color, then click on text tool
    3. Type text. Size will vary depending on the font that you use; try starting with 36-48 - - you can always change it later. The text need not be centered as the large canvas gives you room to play with. You can drag the text into position if it runs off the edge of the canvas, or move it with the move tool.
    4. After you have typed the text, CTRL+click on the text layer in the Layers palette. This will select the text only, without the background.
    5. Go to Edit>define brush. At this point the brush will be added to the currently active brush set
    6. To save the brush in the new set, employ the preset manager.
It has been my experience that a customized brush can be stylized to look quite elegant as we have discussed in several recent posts and that placement can be effected to preserve the aesthetics of a nice picture, albeit within limits.

  • When I open up "originals" in my iPhoto library, the dates are not there or are incorrect.  I see date created and date modified, not the original date the picture was taken.  How can I find the accurate original dates?

I have had a lot of issues with my iPhoto program. After many trips to the Genius Bar and numerous hours with phone techs, I am now rebuilding my library, starting with a backup of it from before the corruption. When I "get info" of a picture, I notice the original date the picture was taken (most important for me), is not there or is wrong.  When I check package contents of my iPhoto library, the originals show up, but most (not all) of the dates are wrong.  Can anyone tell me how or where I might find the original dates?

I did post to the iPhoto forum and am hoping for an answer soon. I don't want to continue rebuilding my iphoto library if I can do it using originals. My library has 45,000 pictures...a huge job!

The only way to do so, is by manually renaming the picture
Using the Playbook and the Z10 and the Z30 and loving them

  • Date and time a picture was taken

In 08/06/2011 I was using a Blackberry Curve. is there meta data that will tell the times that 5 pictures were taken?
I need to use the time stamps to create an order of pictures.
I know that there is "created" , "last changed or last updated", and last "modified"
Regardless of the carrier is there any metadata that will help me to determine exactly when the pictures were taken.
They were taken between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on a Wednesday in early August and I do not think that the carrier used at the time(Metro PCS) would limit the actual metadata.
Can someone please help me with this?

  • IPhoto - sort images my date photo was taken (metadata)

The Sort by Date Photo functunality in iPHOTO appears to be flawed.
I opened up my photos in Photoshop, and looked at the METADATA for when the photos were taken.
When I sorted them "By Date" in iPHOTO, they looked in an odd order.
    Then I figured it out.
They were sorted by the "date" THEY WERE MODIFED IN PHOTOSHOP (the date stamp on the file).
This has nothing to do with the date the photo was taken (in the metadata), which is what most photographers would be interested in.
How do you get iPHOTO to actually sort event photos by the DATE the photo was TAKEN?

Were these photos edtied by PS outside of iPhoto and imported or from within iPhoto with PS as the external editor of choice? Are they jpeg format?
No matter if I edit outside of iPhoto or from withing iPhoto the files are sorted by the EXIF Capture date.  Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • If iPhoto knows when an image was taken why doesn't Preview?

When I take an image with various cameras iPhoto always knows when the image was taken (the date and time is shown in iPhoto).
However, when that same image is opened in preview and I select “Get Info" it only shows the date when the image was copied onto my Mac. Is there a way to tell when an image was taken without using iPhoto?

Type Command(⌘)+i in Preview and then click on the small "i" button in the toolbar at the top and then on the EXIF button.  You'll get this:
It's got all of the EXIF data of the photo. Actually more than iPhoto displays.

  • Printing the date photo was taken Elements 8

Yes I have searched and found one entry about PSE5 but wasn't my question. When I print a photo and select the "More Options" button and then select "Show Date", I get the current date along with current GMT time. I just want the date the photo was taken in the bottom margin, the way it is done in Lightroom 1.3.1. Is there a setting somewhere I'm missing? How do I make this happen?

The only work around in PSE8 is to double click on an image in the Organizer and then type the capture date information that is automatically displayed in the bottom left; into the caption field. Then select caption in the print dialog instead of date. It’s not ideal but it works.

  • After loading Lion I cannot open some pictures. I get Unsupported Image Format. It tells me picture was taken with Canon EOS Rebel with unknown lens

After loading Lion I cannot open open some pictures in Aperture. I get Unsupported Image Format, all files even the ones I can open are .JPG. Also it tells me picture was made using Canon EOS Rebel with unknown lens.

You mention that 'most' of your files are DNG. Try
running the effected files through Adobe DNG
converter again and then import your reprocessed
files to Aperture and see if the problem persists.
I had a problem with a batch of D2x files converted
to DNG which had been metadata tagged by
    PhotoMechanic (the evil app).
B.T.W. You mention that you had been using Bridge.
Are you getting any of the embedded XMP metadata
coming into Aperture during the import process?
Already tried that multiple times...no luck. I'm wondering though if it might be related to metadata as you suggest. I'm still trying different things to see what happens.
I was able to alleviate the problem on one set of images by painstakingly searching my external drive for the oldest backups I could find - CR2 files from before DNG conversion. I then ran those through DNG Converter and tried importing them again (this time, I embedded NO thumbnail, but I'm not sure if that made the difference - I think it was more likely a fluke in the original conversion that caused the problem). This time, it worked.
Now, the big problem is that I still have a couple hundred images for which I can't seem to locate the original CR2 files. I don't typically keep them after conversion, as I don't have the space for both.

  • Scanning old pictures - want to modify the date to date phone was taken not when it was scanned

I have a bunch of pictures from the early 2000s, prior to having a digital camera.
When I scan a picture from Christmas 2001 - it appears with the date I scanned the picture (January 2012)
I try to edit the date in iPhone with no success.
Are there options to modify the date on the phone in iPhoto?

    Well if it's not working...
You can also try the Photos -> Batch Change command

  • How to add a new metadata field to iPhoto where new field is calculated as age in years and month based on a specific date and the date photo was taken ? I want to calculate and display the age of my two kids on every photo.

    Hi
How can I add 2 new metadata-fields to every photo in iPhoto ?
The new fields should state the age of my kids in years and months based on the date that they were born and the date that photo is taken.
    Exampel:
    My son is born 01.01.2010
    My daughter is born 01.01.2012
    Photo taken by data
    Aage of son
    Aage of daughter
    01.07.2011
    1 year 6 month
    not born yet
    01.01.2014
    4 year 0 month
    2 year 0 month
I would like to be able to search by kids age and get the info displayed when doing slideshows.
How to do this in iPhoto ?
Any alternatives to accomplish the same ?
    Kind regards

It can't be done with iPhoto.  There are some DAM (digital asset management) applications that can write to other IPTC fields that iPhoto can't read. One such app is Media Pro 1.
However you would have to calculate the age for each date and add it to one of the fields. There are online age calculators that can do that for you: Age Calculators
If you go thru that much trouble then use iPhoto, make the calculations and add the age to the Description field.  Then you can use Smart Albums to search for 1year 6 month text.
