Mac Classic II wont boot

Hi all,
I have a Mac Classic II that it was working perfectly, but then I left the computer with no power for a few months. I tried to turn it on and all I get is five vertical lines starting with gray, black, gray, black and gray.
I dont get even the "starting up" sound of any mac.
Any ideas?
Thanks a bunch.
Luis

On Macs with a built-in diskette drive, the diskette is checked first, and has priority over the Hard drive. The key sequence Jan suggested may be helpful, but is not absolutely required. This is how I remember the rules for booting from a diskette:
A) If the diskette appears (to the ROM code) to have a System that can be used by this Mac, it will attempt to boot from the diskette, even if you specified a different Startup Disk in the Startup Disk Control Panel the last time the Mac was running. \[Diskette has priority.]
B) If the System is unusable or not an appropriate version for this Mac (as determined by the ROM code) it will eject the diskette and look for the boot device recorded in PRAM. If the PRAM-noted OS_Type, Version, or Device can not found (usually due to PRAM corruption) you get Flashing Question Mark.
C) If the diskette is unreadable, or not a System diskette, it may simply be ignored, and not ejected.
You can think of that key-sequence as "Ignore the Boot Device specified in PRAM and look through the devices available in standard order".

OS X installers have always been fairly specific, hardware-wise. I haven't read anything reflecting that situation with the Recovery HD, so it may be that the Recovery HD created for the MacBook Pro does not have the necessary drivers for the Mac Pro. Obviously, nothing definitive here, but a possibility.

What OS were you using on the mini before this problem started? If 10.7.8.9, boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions. Then reinstall the OS.

  • Replaced HDD on intel mac and it wont boot

Hi , My mom bought an Intel mac a couple years ago and it had a harddrive failure , instead of taking it back on warraty she put it in the closet.
So I thought I'd put a new drive in it and shed be happy.. so I bought a seagate 2 TB drive in it , but it wont boot , it just goes to a folder and question mark.. I cant seem to find a boot menu anywhere .I've tried all of the ways to get to the boot menu but nothing seems to work. I inserted the osx disc one and it accepted it but now wont eject it.. I'm just a bit frustrated ,. anyone have any advice ,
                                                                                                       Thanks

You must first prep the drive then install OS X.
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Complete the OS X installation.

  • My mac book pro wont boot up

i turned my mac book pro off, and now it wont boot. i try reinstalling os but it wont let me.its showing it in the disk utilty, now it wont let me install.it says mac os x cannout startup from this disk. What do i do?

I can't help you until you answer the questions I asked. If you want to reinstall Snow Leopard then follow these instructions:
    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • Mac os X wont boot up, im running snow leopard.

My 27 inch iMac wont boot, i am runnign snow leopard. I just see the apple sign and the cycle spinning meaning its still loading. I cant use disk utility because leopard install disc wont boot, also i cant run any commands in single user mode, doing /sbin/fsck -fy does nothing, i dont see a # sign or anything, whatever i type it doesnt matter whenever i hit return the cursor just goes to the line below.

Your Leopard discs are useless, since this machine shipped with Snow Leopard. Boot the machine with the disc that came with it and run Disk Utility from there. Since you say it's new, call AppleCare and let them fix things if you're unable to start it up.

  • Mac Classic Freeze after boot

    Hi everyone
I got a free Macintosh Classic recently. It comes with System 7.5.3 in a Color Classic HD (Should be from CC). I booted the Mac and it played the Boot Chime. But right before the Boot Chime, it has some noise and also during it boot, a bit like the sound that we trash a file in Mac OS X. When it finish booting, it halt in a few second or minute. Then I power off the Mac by switching the power button at the back of the machine and restart it. This time it showed a Chess board screen and halted. This repeated for two or three times and I have to idle the Mac for a couple of minutes before restarting it.
I tried to boot without extension or boot with ROM by holding Command-Option-X-O and it still halt after a few minute or second.
Sometimes it wasn't crashed and I can use my mouse again after I re-plug the keyboard and mouse. What should I do to rescue this little Mac?

My PM7600 shows same sympton(mouse not usable for some time) while loading the full system and building up network connections. I have to wait until all is finished(no multitasking?).My XP-PC doesn't react on the mouse-clicking while loading system components from time to time.
Clock: My old Classic(and none of the old Macs) never had that Y2k bug.You can easily change the date to 2006.
IF date/time isn't correct after a short period of disconnecting the powercord the backup battery is gone-mine has still the first battery!
Can HD crash the whole machine? If the HD contains a faulty system this will lead to a crash(bomb appears, for instance). You often can repair the system using DiskToolsDisks or installing a complete new system.

  • My Mac Classic Won't Boot. Only Brings up Floppy with question mark.

I bought a Macintosh Classic (original, running System 7.0.0) last weekend. I connected it up (no keyboard) and it ran fine. But when I tried to turn it on the next morning, it brought up a grey screen with a picture of a floppy disk with a question mark on it. After about five attempts at starting, it booted itself up (????). However, after that the problem started again and I have not managed to get it to boot succesfully from about fifty attempted boots. Does anyone know if this would be a hardware or software problem and how to solve it?
    Thanks
    Jack

It's a hardware problem.  Your hard drive is no longer spinning up - it's suffering from "stiction," where the viscocity of the spindle or head lubricant gets too thick for the drive motor to overcome.
The way to solve it permanently is to replace the hard drive with a solid state solution.  Working backwards... the next easier solution is to open the machine up, remove the hard drive, and rotate it sharply along the axis of the spindle.  That may loosen the platters enough to let it start up again once you put it back together.  And the easiest solution - boot from a floppy.
You can't create a floppy using a Windows machine.  The drive speeds and writing techniques are incompatible.  You can use a service like this to make one for you, or just find someone or a user group locally with older Mac hardware.

  • My Mac Book Pro wont boot fully.

my MacBook pro won't boot fully. it seems to be frozen in the first page that appears (the grey one with the apple symbol). i left it there for hours to see if it was just updating. does anyone know of there's a master reset button? I'm not concerned with losing data. thanks!

Forget that software, it's of no assistance.
Read my User Tip here, especially about "Gray Screen"
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3046
If this is all too much for you, or the Shift key on boot doesn't fix it, then perhaps consider hiring the assistance of a local PC/Mac specialist to make sure your data is recovered from both Windows and OS X.
Gray Screen issues can be quite complex to repair. It could be a simple kext file conflict (if so Shift key boot should get you in, then update all your software or check with the developers for updates)
If not it could be far worse, all depends how skilled you are with Mac's and what you have backed up etc.
If no backup, then your looking at data recovery efforts using another Mac or OS X on a external drive, no easy task.
PC/Mac specialists use a special Linux disk/USB to boot the computer and can transfer files out of either Windows or OS X.
Unfortunatly they keep it complex, so users can't use it themselves.

  • Mac Pro 2006 wont boot up, no video...

Hello... I have a Mac Pro 2006 and yesterday, it froze up and I had hold the power button down in order for it to turn on, since it was unresponsive... Upon trying to restart the Mac, it just hung at the white screen with the apple logo, and I realized I had a Mac installation cd in the drive, so I figured it was trying to load it. I used the eject button on the keyboard, but the dvd wouldnt eject, so I took the side cover off of the Mac Pro, and manually ejected the dvd... Then I tried to reboot the computer. This time when I tried to boot the mac without the OSX installation dvd in the drive, the computer didn't boot up, my monitor wasn't getting any signal, but the fans, drives and everything still sounded like they were running as normal and the dvd drive still ejects manually... I used the diagnostic lights inside the Mac, and the 1st light is showing trickle power, the 2nd and 3rd lights are red immediately after I press the power button, 4th and 5th aren't lit, the 6th is flashing green, and the 7th is a solid green... The 6th light flashes green whether or not my video card is plugged into a pci slot or not... I have tried booting the system without anything connected, drives, mouse, keyboard, anything and I still get the same lights... Please help... I was wondering if it could be too much thermal paste on the cpus or something of that nature...

Make sure your Ram is paired correctly when you install it --
And the long boot time is due to the previous reply. If you don't set a 'boot drive' the mac pro will look everywhere before selecting the OSX installation.
I've got the dual 300GB Velociprators in raid 0 with 80GB Intel ssd boot drive in my mac pro (same as yours). You can also boost your clock speed by a software trick .. I can get mine over 2.9 MHz before errors start popping up in console.
(problem is it screws up video playback and time)

  • Mac mini server wont boot

just got it out of the box, set it up, installed updates and rebooted - now it won't get past the grey apple splash screen with the spinning wheel at the bottom of the screen - any ideas?

I have a very similar problem, all was ok until yesterday, now it won't reboot and just has the gray screen with spinning wheel.
Spoke to genius bar today and they said to do a new install, all well and good but not easy with the Mac Mini server. Any help solving this appreciated.

  • Mac Bo ok Wont Boot

Plz Help when i try to boot it stays at the apple
When i boot using the apple V Key i get this erro Undefined on disk2 i think plz help
    Thanks

    Hi delldude,
Try this step that I copy and paste from my previous reply to other user:
    welcome to macbook forum:
+insert your installer disk #1, restart and press alt/option and it will give you all option to boot from.+
+if it only shows you to boot from installer disk system folder, that might be the sign that your HD is failed.+
+or you can insert installer disk #1, restart and press C to boot right away from the isntaller dsik.+
+after select the language, open utilities from menu bar and select utility / and check if your hd is mounted (on the left portion), if it mounted, choose repair disk and reboot (you might need to re-install the OS X if the system folder corrupted). But if it didn't shows up, then it might be failed as suspected.+
If your macbook still within warranty, apple will replace the HD for free. If not, try to get new HD and installed it yourself and it is way cheaper than use genius guy service at apple store.

  • MAC BOOK PRO MID 2012 RETINA DISPLAY WONT BOOT

My mac book pro wont  boot.  It shows the apple logo then it turns itself off.
    Please help

If you call AppleCare, they will probably lead you through an SMC reset, so do that first. If it does not help then call them; it's under warranty.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
