Mac Color Classic Display

Hi, I have a macintosh color classic having a display issue. If I leave the system off, and the main switch on the back in the off position for a few hours and start it up it runs perfect, and can do so for well over 20 hours strait.
However, if the main switch has been on for more than a minute or so without starting up I have issues. When I finally do hit the power button on the keyboard the display is overlapping itself in the middle and almost twice as bright as the maximum allows.
I already tried opening the case and dusting out the inside with a can of compressed air. Replaced PRAM battery. Reset PRAM, all that normal stuff.
Any suggestions or tips would be nice, especially since the computer is in otherwise perfect operating condition!

I'm no expert on these but I had something similar on a Classic. It seemed to be a fault with the hard drive, I think it stalled and took current forcing the PSU into safe mode, as in the computer didn't start up. I replaced the HD and all was well.
Sometimes the computer would start and sometimes not, most odd.
I wonder as your screen is folding over, the deflection circuit has a fault which takes too much current and causes the problem. Only a guess based on what I have experienced.

  • Using a Color Classic as a print server for modern Macs?

My fiancé and I have a 2011 MBP and a 2008 MBP respectively, both running Mountain Lion.
Our network is set up through a first-generation Time Capsule, which until recently, also had an Epson Stylus inkjet connected to it.
The Epson has passed away, and the only working printer we have is an old Apple Personal LaserWriter 320.
We still have several toner cartridges for the PLW, and it works just fine... but it only has tthe old 8-pin serial connector, and from what I understand, it's only compatible with LocalTalk.
The PLW is connected to a Mac Color Classic, which has been upgraded with an LC 575 logic board (including an ethernet communications card). It's currently running Mac OS 8.6. I'd like to set the Color Classic up as a print server until we can decide on a long-term solution, but I am unsure of how to get these systems to talk to each other over the network.
Can we get the Color Classic to host the PLW for our OSX machines?

    m8,
Just like any hardwares,(vga, lan card, audio card etc) drivers for XP, Vista & Windows 2003 have specific drivers of its own. You'll need to find a driver for 3110(which include its modem) for windows 2003 server, but I doubt if you can find one. There is no work around on this!

  • Netowking a Color Classic to a Modern Mac

    Hi,
Is there a way to network a Color Classic running 7.5.3 with an Ethernet port to a modern mac running OS X? Will OS X be able to see the drive and access files on the Classic?

"If no TCP/IP option is available, connect to the Tiger computer from the computer that is the AppleTalk-only AFP server"
In English: You can still connect to a Mac OS 10.4 Tiger System from System 7 and Push your files onto the 10.4 system. You just cannot get the Mac OS 10.4 Computer to Pull the files from your system 7 Mac.

  • Help w/ SE/30, Color Classic, System 6, a Centris, and more.

    Hi all,
I recently acquired some more cool oldies However, they're pretty much unfamiliar territory. I have two SE/30s. One is working - it has 2MB of RAM and a 40 meg hard disk, with an ethernet card installed. However, it's running System 6, and it can't print to my Color StyleWriter 2400. I tried downloading the 2400's drivers from Apple's older software page, but those drivers said it needed 6.0.7. So, I downloaded the 6.0.8 upgrade. Argh - same message! I really don't fancy running System 7 anything with 2 meg of RAM.
This also came with a cool Apple 20SC hard drive - with it's original 20MB MiniScribe HD working quite well.
I have another SE/30 which powers up to fine vertical lines. So, I opened her up (the screws recessed in the handle had already been removed, lucky for me). As it turns out, the battery had leaked everywhere. It completely ruined the battery holder on the logic board, and it had even eaten through a capacitor near the battery. So, I need information regarding the capacitors, or a new SE/30 Logic board. Upon further inspection, there appear to be other capacitors that have leaked a little.
I also got a color classic. That's a cool little machine, but rather useless right now. However, it uses 30 pin memory, which i don't have. It has something like 8MB of RAM, which I'd like to upgrade. I put an LC PDS ethernet card in it, but there are NO networking-related control panels installed (Network and File Sharing are both missing). What do I need to get a System 7.1 machine on a network? I have an LC III in the same state.
I also got a Centris 650 and 12" RGB display - the kind that go with the LC. The Centris needed a clean install - I chose 7.6.1. It seems to work well now, but it likes to turn blue sometimes! What I mean is, the initial grey rasters are fine, then right before the happy mac appears and the corners of the screen are rounded, the whites shift to neon blue. It's not the monitor - all the colors are fine, and the monitor works fine with other machines. Only the pure whites turn blue - no other colors are messed up. I pulled and cleaned the VRAM with a contact cleaner pen, and the problem seems to be okay for now, but I haven't looked at it yet today. I also got an AAUI -> Ethernet transceiver, so i should be able to connect to other machines.
Ideally, I'd like to get ALL these machines on the network, so that they can see each other's files and such. Any help with that would be greatly appreciated. I'm familiar with the TCP/IP and IP addresses and stuff, but I have no idea what software I need to install on these old Macs to get them to file share.
Any help, suggestions, links, advice or opinions about ANY of this would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Kyle-

    Kyle
So, I downloaded the 6.0.8 upgrade. Argh - same message! I really don't fancy running System 7 anything with 2 meg of RAM.As Jim mentioned, 30-pin SIMMs of 1MB (as opposed to the 4 X 512kB, or 8 x 256kB that you have now), and perhaps 4MB, are reaching the throwout point. Try for 8 x 4MB as a least-cost fillip to your SE/30. With Mode 32 (and, therefore, 32-bit operation), the resulting 32MB will make the SE/30 fly, and easily run Systems up to and including 7.5.5. Its NIC and your printer will also thank you. The 20SC case, I suggest, is capable of at least a 4GB replacement for the MiniScribe if you use 7.5.5.
So, I need information regarding the capacitors, or a new SE/30 Logic board. Upon further inspection, there appear to be other capacitors that have leaked a little. If you go shopping for another SE/30 logic board, look for one that has metal latches for the SIMM slots, and, to ice the cake, a socketted 68030 processor. The first is a more durable means of SIMM retention, and the second a useful feature if you find a plug-in, as opposed to an SE/30 PDS slot-filling, processor upgrade.
I also got a color classic ... it uses 30 pin memory ... which I'd like to upgrade. I put an LC PDS ethernet card in it, but there are NO networking-related control panels installed (Network and File Sharing are both missing). What do I need to get a System 7.1 machine on a network? I have an LC III in the same state. The CC can take 2 x 4MB SIMMs in addition to the 4MB soldered-in. However, the Memory Manager will 'see' only 10MB total. The CC supports up to OS 7.6.1, and with OT 1.1.2 and a PDS NIC, can hold its own in a LAN. Keep in mind that System 7.5.3 and the 7.5.5 update are readily accessible. OS 7.6, however, is a 'reference release' that must be bought.
Ideally, I'd like to get ALL these machines on the network, so that they can see each other's files and such ... I'm familiar with the TCP/IP and IP addresses and stuff, but I have no idea what software I need to install on these old Macs to get them to file share.Networking is a snap if it is set up properly. Teejus, but rewarding. OT 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 will need to be added to Systems 7.5.5 to 7.6.1 after you have installed the NIC drivers (if needed). You will need to configure AppleTalk, TCP/IP, Users & Groups, and FileSharing. It is also a Good Thing to use AppleShare versions appropriate to each installed System/OS. Rainer's link will also stand you in good stead.

  • End of the road for my Color Classic???

Greetings. Lifelong Mac user here who, in the wake of Jobs’ passing, retrieved my Color Classic from the attic, thinking it would surely boot right up. It worked as recently as maybe 4-5 years ago, but all attempts over the past month to successfully boot it up have been in vain. After one purchase from Radio Shack and three from eBay, I’m 99 percent done throwing any more money at it. But I’d like to see if any of you could maybe help me out before I give up the ghost. I don’t have long, since I’ll need to return the internal HD I just bought off eBay soon if I want a refund. Here’s the rundown:
** Initially, it would boot up without the startup chime, show a grey screen for a minute or two (no icons at all), then give the eight-tone chimes of death.
** Buying a new PRAM battery led to it giving the startup chime and showing the smiling Mac, but that would give way to the flashing question mark over the floppy icon. I tried resetting PRAM, which did lead to the three successive startup chimes, but still got the question mark afterward.
** Next thing I did was buy a complete set of 7.1 discs off eBay. Using either the Disk Tools disc or the Install Me First disc, I would get the startup chime and smiling Mac, but then I couldn’t get past this message: “This startup disk will not work with this Macintosh. Use the latest installer to update this disk for this model.” For some reason, the mouse wouldn’t work when doing this, so I’d have to power off with the main switch and then eject the floppy with a paper clip. I would later learn that these discs apparently wouldn’t work on the CC because of a missing System Enabler.
** Next step: buying 7.6 Disk Tools discs off eBay. This time, the startup chime and happy Mac gave way to a sad Mac icon, a "0000000F / 00000066" error message and four-tone chimes of death. That led me to believe my factory HD was bad, sooooo …
** I bought an internal HD off eBay with 7.5 already installed on it. I had high hopes that this would finally do the trick. The heavens would open up and I would see the desktop. But ... after the swap, I was greeted once again with the flashing question mark. I disconnected and reattached the data and power cables to the HD three times, but to no avail. I tried booting off the 7.6 Disk Tools with this new HD, but got the sad Mac / "0000000F / 00000066" sequence once more. I tried booting off the 7.6 Disk Tools with no HD attached and got the same thing. This was the most depressing night of all.
** Today, with the new HD installed, I tried booting off of old 7.0.1 and 7.1 startup floppies my dad made back in the day -- and one or both of them actually progresses past the smiling Mac to the "Welcome to Macintosh" screen. But then, the "use the latest installer" screen takes over.
So this is where things stand. I'm holding out hope that I can having a working CC without spending any more money, but I'm not optimistic. Tonight I might trying washing the logic board in the dishwasher, as well as booting with the logic board disconnected and then pushing it in shortly after the startup chime (which I had tried with the factory HD without success).
Any thoughts? Ideas? Or should I call it a day, put it back on the side mantle in my living room, and go the Macquarium (or MacAntFarm) route down the road? Thanks in advance for your help!

The Color Classic is pretty straight forward to work on because the motherboard is just a matter of pulling it out.
But I don't think it's a bad motherboard so that is the good news. Sounds like the original hard drive died but before you toss it try seeing if it is just a matter of the heads being stuck. Take it in hand and gently swish it back and forth a few times to see if it that will unstick the heads. If you had a clean room I would say open the drive and gently turn the platters than zip it back up and see if it will work.
The "new' hard drive you bought sounds like it is pooched as those clicking sounds are usually an indication of a bad drive so return it ASAP for a working one or a refund. But just in case if you look at your old hard drive does it have terminators on it, they will look like two long black strips with multiple prongs attaching them to the motherboard of the hard drive. Now look at the new one, does it have any or a place for them? Though my memory is foggy on SCSI drives but that 700 might have a jumper instead but that could be wrong.
In terms of the OS, you can run System 8 on it. But you must buy the Apple release version for all Macs which comes with a floppy disk to boot your CC as well as a CD with the system SW on it. The CD is white but you will need a SCSI CD drive to install the sw. The error messages tell me that those disks are the wrong ones and not something wrong with your CC.
Now if you were into experimenting..... the following motherboards from other compact Macs will work in your CC.
The motherboard from the LC 525 is a straight swap in and even the ports on the board mate up with the holes on the rear cover. The LC 550 as well, which was actually the motherboard that the CC II used.
The motherboard from the LC 575 will also work and that adds a 68040 cpu into the mix plus the upgrade to 72 pin simms which allows you to add up to 128mb of ram with a modification to the case of the CC. The two other boards I mentioned also take 72 pin simms so you can bump up your CC from 10mb to 32mb.
I wrote a short page on my experiments here, http://www.kevinomura.com/macs/colorclassic/index.html .
In any event I think it's just your hard drive that is the problem since your video sounds good, don't toss that CC as there are still collectors out there looking for them.
On other thought, since the hard drive is on a caddy with a zif socket it's possible that some of the pins have a bit of corrosion on them. Check the one's on the hard drive side and see if they look clean, if not clean them. on the computer side that will be tougher since it's deep in the case but a few insertions of the drive might be enough to knock some of the corrosion off and make a better contact.

  • How to copy files from a color classic w/broken floppy drive to an i-book ?

How to copy files from a color classic w/broken floppy drive to an i-book ?
    I have a Coplor Classic with a system 7.
There is no ethernet on color classic. The floppy drive is dead.
I need some important files I have on the color classic...
How do I connetct them to transfer files?...

The easiest way, as AppleIIFreak has suggested, is probably to find another older Macintosh computer (with the round MiniDIN printer port) to be used as an intermediary. You could then connect the two machines by means of LocalTalk cabling, or just a plain Mac serial printer cable between the printer ports, and then set up file sharing. From that other Mac, you should be able to forward the files via Ethernet, diskettes (if you have an external USB floppy drive for the iBook) or email (Internet).
If a second old Mac is not available, you may want to try something else. It would not be unusual for a Color Classic to have ClarisWorks already (obviously, one cannot expect anything new to become installed). If so, that program suite would contain a communications part. This means that you could connect an external serial modem, and send the files over the phone lines (or locally, modem-to-modem, in principle as in KB article # 22229; sometimes a very simple home-built line simulator may have to be added) to any other computer using a terminal emulation application with file transfer capabilities. It would also be possible to connect the modem port directly to the serial port of a PC, through a combination of a Mac modem cable (MiniDIN-8M to DB-25M) and a standard PC null-modem cable (DB-25F to DB-9F).

Only if you're still in 1999. Websafe colors are completely
    obsolete. It's
been more than a decade since the last 8-bit color graphics
    card was
produced. So, it's not a monitor issue at all.

  • How to adjust Magnavox 32" 32MF339B/F7 to mac colors

I am a Graphic Designer, I NEED HELP! I bought a Magnavox 32" 32MF339B/F7, and I have a custom built PC with adobe CS5 Design Premium. Then when I go to the University or use my MacBook. I run into the issue that the colors are not the same on the display. So for example, I made a flash animation for my class of the New Super mario Brothers. It was just a random assignment. I had to re edit all the mario characters because they did not have the same back ground color. It look black on the PC with the adobe CS, but the mac monitor is not the same colors. How would I adjust this. I need to adjust the LCD TV to mac colors. is this possible? Or should I just plug my mac into the DVI port. HELP

You can try running a color calibration from the Mac and adjusting the gamma when you get to that particular screen during the calibration process. Try 1.8 as a gamma setting and see if that helps.

  • No sound from Color Classic

Hiya. I've got a Color Classic, very used. Sys 7.1, 6 megs RAM, 80 meg HD (remember when that seemed huge?)
It has no sound. None. At first, it had a muted sound, but now even that's gone. No sound if I plug in an external speaker or headphones either. I've opened it up and checked the connections on the speaker, and it looks good all the way thru.
I suspect it's the main board (with the external plugs and all), so I suppose I'd have to replace that if I manage to come across another CC (or maybe just exchange one for the other), but I'd like to know if there are any other possibilities, some simple thing that could be out of whack that I somehow might have missed.
    Thanks

    Brett
Given that you haven't missed the front-panel sound and brightness controls of the CC (the harbinger of things to come on some of the later AIOs), you may have analogue board problems. Although on-board capacitors had gone through a couple of generations by the time of the CC, even the newer types are 14-odd years old now. The audio of AIO 68k Macs is highly sensitive to capacitor degeneration, for which the sole remedy is replacement of the capacitors. Replacement CC analogue boards are getting scarce, so repair is likely to be quicker. Washing the logic board can often make a considerable improvement to capacitor-induced problems on that board, but the logic board is where the better capacitors fail less often.
Colour Classics can be upgraded in various ways. The first, when one is running, is to maximize RAM by replacing the 2 x 1MB SIMMs with 2 x 4MB. (There is 4MB of soldered-in RAM.) The CC will, however 'see' only 10MB of the resulting 12MB. VRAM can be doubled by adding a 256kB SIMM, and a 68882 maths coprocessor (FPU) can be added, if you do enough number-crunching to need one. In this state you could put an Apple IIe-emulator card in the LC PDS slot. If not one of those, a 10Base-T Ethernet NIC in that slot. The emulator cards have gone from USD10 to USD40 on eBay in the last couple of years. The Apple II ware needs a 10MB partition of its own, on say, a larger HDD of about 500MB as another upgrade.
The second kind of upgrade is to replace the logic board. There is already a forum devoted to Mystic, Takky and other hacks of CCs. If you go this way you will not be able to use the Apple IIe card.

  • I need System 7 for use on my Color Classic?

    Hello Apple Community -
I've fired up my old Macintosh Color Classic and it has the hard drive but has been completely wiped down to the bones. I need to find the ENTIRE collection of System 7 image files to stick on floppies that my Color Classic can directly boot into.
I've seen a whole bunch, but the only issue is they have to be mounted while already inside the operating system. I need image files I can somehow put onto a floppy and make it so my Color Classic will directly boot into them.
    Cheers,
    ~Nick

    Hi Nick,
    >After I replace the hard drive with another one, can I boot up using the  Network Access Disk and from there format the drive and install 7.5.3?
It depends on whether the SCSI hard drive has an appropriate basic formatting or not. If yes, you should be able to boot from the Network Access floppy and initialise the hard disk via the Erase Disk command under the Special menu. If not, you would need a disk tools floppy with a suitable formatting utility.
Apple HD SC Setup 7.3.5 is a formatting utility for hard drives with an Apple logo (that have not been reformatted by a third-party application). For other hard drives, a third-party program (such as Lido 7.5.6) would be needed.
    http://www.info.apple.com/support/oldersoftwarelist.html#util
It is possible to modify a Network Access floppy to hold a small utility like Apple HD SC Setup 7.3.5. However, this would normally require access to a fully working old (approx. 1991-1997) Macintosh computer.
    >Is there a Windows program I can use to properly put these on the floppies as I don't have access to an actual Classic OS?
You would need a Windows program (something like TransMac) that can handle Mac floppies (1.44 MB) on a PC. Download all nineteen files in the MacBinary (.bin) format. Keep the files as they are. Do not attempt to decode or decompress anything on the PC. Copy the files one at a time onto Mac-(re)formatted 1.44 MB HD diskettes. Then move the floppies to the Color Classic (once it has a temporary operating system).
On the Color Classic, place the nineteen files in a common folder. Now, use StuffIt Expander to decode the MacBinary (.bin). Do this by dragging each transferred file onto the StuffIt Expander icon, or by opening each file from inside the StuffIt Expander utility. If you do not have a proper version of StuffIt Expander for the old Mac, you may want to try this:
Download the MACDISK.EXE file from the following web page onto a PC (capable of running a DOS program).
    http://rrzs42.uni-regensburg.de/Macintosh/files/macftp.html
Next, prepare an empty PC-formatted 1.44 MB HD floppy via the FORMAT A: command under DOS or the "full" formatting option under Windows. Do this even if the floppy had been formatted earlier.
Run the MACDISK.EXE (DOS) program on the PC. Follow the instructions on screen. The result will be a Mac-formatted (sic!) floppy complete with a ready-to-use StuffIt Expander 4.0.1 installer for Macintosh.

My 2510 Photosmart All In One Color LCD display screen has seemed to stop working and makes life difficult.  Any solutions?

    Hi
This is exactly what has happend to my PowerBook a few days ago. Its only just out of warranty too. Man I wish I bought Apple care!!!!!!
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, could you tell me what it was? Was it the inverter? I'm miles away from an Apple store (yes I know I live in the UK and its a small island, but its still miles) and woulf like to try and resolve it myself.
Works fine on an external LCD. Tried everything!

  • Macintosh Color Classic startup issues

I recently came across an old Color Classic. When I try to start it up it makes the normal boot sound, display comes to life, and you can hear the hard drive spin up for about 3 seconds, before it goes back silent (except for the fan noise). From there it just flashes the question mark. With an external CD-Rom plugged in I am able to boot an old recovery cd that I had made for my powerbook 520c with system 7.6.1. It gets to the desktop, but never mounts the hard drive. Additionally, the apple hard drive setup software says it can't find and SCSI devices. I have various other drive software on the recovery CD that I will try, but does anyone have any other ideas?
Oh, and I have no idea what size the hard drive is, just that it is a Color Classic with 10mb of ram.

Using the program SCSI Director while booted up off of a CD was able to at least see the hard drive. Unfortunately it is reporting a "sense key 04 hardware error" every time it attempt to mount, format, test, or repair the disk. So today I have spent the better part of 5 hours driving around Tucson trying to find an old 50 pin SCSI hard drive (or a machine to donate one), with no success. (tried goodwills, thrift stores, computer shops, etc).
So at this point I'm either going to have to make a trip to Phoenix to pick one up, or attempt to repair mine. On the bottom board of the hard drive near the power connector there are two small black resistor or capacitor looking things. On one of them it appears that the metal pin leading into it is corroded/rusted. I may try my chances at desoldering that one, swinging by RadioShack, and picking up an identical one. It just seems like a long shot though. Does anyone have any experience in doing this, or any other ideas?
    Many Thanks,

  • Macintosh Color classic

I use pc, I might buy a color classic soon, do I need a macintosh formated floppy drive to put files onto there for the mac to work? And will it work with my PC?

Macs with a 1.4MB-capable floppy drive can read and write IBM-formatted floppies as well as Mac-formatted floppies.
The older 800K format is implemented with a variable-speed motor, so only the internal drive in a platinum/beige Macintosh can read and write those diskettes.
Remember to unpack stuffed files ONLY on the Mac, as the PC file format discards the resource fork of unpacked Mac files, destroying them.
