If you are referring to a "lock", it was removed with the Statusbar in Firefox 4. The S-I-B is used to indicate a secure connection.<br />

my chosen home page wont load it loads on internet explorer but not firefox I tried the drag it to the little houes by the address bar but it still wont load it was working but stopped three days ago

I upgraded my Firefox and now when I open, either from a shortcut on my desk top or the Firefox icon all I get is a blank page with no address but about:blank. I can then open a page such as my mail or home page from a bookmark, nothing from the desktop will open in any thing other than the blank page. Also my right click options only work once and a while. Things like saving a photo or going back just don't work. All sorts of little glitches, I find them very frustrating and am considering going back to IE even though I don't like it much. All my saved pass words are gone too.

When using firefox i cannot scroll through my aol email. I can only read the most recent 12 messages and deleting does not help. If i use internet explorer i am able to scroll down and read all. HELP!

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
    Thank you.

  • Unstable internet connection and Safari/Firefox do not load

I'm trying to help a friend who has an iMac G5 running OS 10.4. with an ethernet connection and a Netgear router.  AT&T/SBC is her ISP.  She had no connection to the Network at all but I've didled with the settings including re-installing the router software.  Now, she has an unstable connection to the Internet but neither Safari nor Firefox will load any site even when everything says it's connected.
When I run Network, Assist Me, Diagnostics, all lights are green.  The modem will then occasionally flash red and lose the Internet connection even while I'm looking at Network Diagnostics showing all green and connected.  Then the modem will find and return to solid green for Internet.  Throughout all the solid green connections, Safari/Firefox will not go out and find and load any bookmark or new site.  I assume I've missed something in the Network settings that's causing the instability and failure to run a browser.
Any suggestion to correct the Network settings would be appreciated. I assume that will fix the browser problem.  Thanks.
BTW- She says it started when AT&T/SBC announced they were making email connection changes this month but I'm uncertain how that would change her ability to connect to the Internet.  I think they're separate issues.  Hopefully, I can fix the email problem (settings) when the Internet issue is resolved.

Could be a hardware problem with ethernet port / cable / rouer / isp.
    This might help narrow down.
    You can use
harddrive > applications > utilities > network utility
    to diagnose the situation.
    # see whether software is defined correctly
    ping 127.0.0.1
    # ping you router address.  Will have to look for address.
    You can ping google.com.

If pinging 17.254.3.183 works but pinging Google.com doesn't. You have a bad DNS Server address.
    I use Google.
Google provides free dns lookup.  Their numbers are:
    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4
    BDAqua suggests in a post.
You can use OpenDNS for looking up web addresses.
Put these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers for a try...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
I think they now pretend you need to join to use, but you don't.

(Please note that you do not need to a joint Open DNS to use it.)

  • Safari and Firefox do not open search engines

I have an IMac 8.1, with OS 10.5.8.  Recently, our internet browser programs (safari and firefox) will not open any search engine (google, bing or yahoo).  However, I am able to navigate to web-sites that I manually type in (e.g., www.cnn.com). Does anyone know what the cause, and fix, to this issue?  Also, this behavior did coincide with a recent update to our Intego Antivirus software, but I think this is unrelated.
Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks,

Also, this behavior did coincide with a recent update to our Intego Antivirus software, but I think this is unrelated
Maybe not. Most, if not almost all, anti-virus software interferes with OS X and is not required.
    Try installing Glims:
If you want to fix your Google search to a specific Google location, I recommend that you download and install the free plug-in Glims:
    http://www.machangout.com/
which not only does that but much more equally useful stuff! Such as enabling Safari to run full-screen, and more.)
(It adds items to Safari Preferences).
Not only does it already list a number of search engines and regions, but you can also add any other search engine not already listed in Glims by using the method described here:
    http://www.machangout.com/tutorials/addsearchengine
Just enter the name you give the search engine in the name field, and the URL for it in the Query URL field.

  • Cannot access anything MSN on Safari or Firefox

I cannot access MSN's home page or Messenger on my Mac. I have both Safari and Firefox. My internet is up and running and everything is normal except for the fact that I cannot even get the hotmail log in page up or visit any web page that is MSN related. Is there a setting or something that is preventing me from being able to access my hotmail account or the MSN home page? please help...

I'm also having trouble just the last two days getting to Gmail with Safari 3.2.1. Here's the Gmail message I get:
"We're sorry. It seems there is a problem. Please try using Gmail with a supported browser. If you're encountering this error while using a supported browser, we suggest alerting your Internet Service Provider (ISP) that a proxy is failing to accept cookies on HTTP redirects.
Click here to return to Gmail. You'll need to sign in to your account again.'
When I click the link for the redirect, this long string shows up in the url window and it just hangs up -- hiccupping over and over again, going nowhere. When I launch Firefox, I get in fine. Anyone know what gives?

  • Adobe Flash Player (Vers. 14.0.0.176) not working in Safari or Firefox on Mac (Mavericks; Vers. 10.9.4). What do I do?!

    Hi all,
This is my first post to the forum. I've been directed here because I'm having issues with video streaming/playback (in particular, YouTube) on the Safari and Firefox browsers on my Mac. First, a little bit of information:
    My computer:
I have a 2012 iMac with a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 32 GB of memory and a 3TB Apple "Fusion" solid state hard drive. The software version my Mac is currently running is 10.9.4, on the Mavericks OS, as shown in the subject box.
    My Issue:
I've noticed, in the past week or so, that video streaming and playback, on YouTube in particular, are either (a) slow or (b) not loading whatsoever. In YouTube, three things become apparent almost immediately: (1) the video (advert or no advert) simply does not load, with a black screen that turns into a grainy screen after a while with the message "An Error Occurred;" (2) the suggested videos on the side panel (i.e., to the right) do not load properly. The thumbnails of the videos simply do not load; and finally, (3) the comments also appear to experience issues from loading. I've attached screenshots to document this.
N.B. Comments do appear, along with the side panel thumbnails once YouTube has given up on trying to load the video
So, What have I done about it?
Everything I can do, to be honest. I've:
    (1) Checked preferences in Safari (i.e., plugins are installed correctly)
    (2) Cleared Cache in Safari
    (3) Deleted "All Site Data and Settings" in the Flash Player section of my System Preferences
    (4) Uninstalled Adobe Flash Player completely
    (5) Reinstalled Adobe Flash Player
    (6) Contacted Apple
    (7) Checked Preferences in Safari again (i.e., plugins are installed correctly)
    (8) Cleared Cache in Safari again
    (9) Reset Safari
    (10) Deleted "All Site Data and Settings" in the Flash Player section of my System Preferences
    (11) Uninstalled Adobe Flash Player
    (12) Undertook a "Clean Install" of Adobe Flash Player, following instructions
And alas, I'm in the forum! May I also add, that I have also scanned my hard drive for any corruption that may be present, generating a negative result. I just do not know what to do at this stage. I've done everything I have knowledge of in trying to resolve this issue.
ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you
    Kieran

Just for further confirmation that the installation went through succesfully multiple times:

I have a MAC running Maverick. MP3 sounds will not play in Safari or FireFox, but will play if you download the file locally to the Desktop. How to resolve this?

You probably have an internet plugin installed that is preventing the MP3s from playing. I just checked a site with an MP3, and it played, rather than downloaded.
The internet plugin folders are at:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins and
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
(~/Library is hidden by default. Let me know if you don't know how to access it.)
My internet plugins were all in /Library; there were none in ~/Library.
Try moving these folders to the desktop (don't delete them), restarting, and then seeing if the MP3s play.
They it will be trial and error to see which plugin is responsible.

From the Safari menu bar, select

Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the malfunctioning extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. That will revert its settings to the defaults.
