Mac connects then drops wireless connection after startup

Hi, I have a strange problem.  I recently purchased a new MBP.  My old MBP didn't have any problems with the router, but my new one, after coming out of sleep, will be connected to the internet for a couple of seconds, then drop it like it's searching for a signal, then be connected for around 20 seconds but no actual internet connection. I know that it initially is connected because I can refresh the page or connect to a webpage for about 5 seconds, but then it starts "looking" for the signal.  And of course, once it finds the signal, it doesn't actually work for another 20 seconds.  I wanted to blame the router but no other computers have this problem.  Can anyone help me?

If you are using W7 -- scrooge is correct - it is not listed on Linksys' W7 Comp. list - http://tinyurl.com/yd2nv5v  - but it is listed on Microsoft's Comp. list -  http://tinyurl.com/y9vuwdm - confusing!!
FYI - I'm using a #320 router with the WUSB600N adaptor ( Win 7 driver - Ver.3.1.0.1.0 ) on a 64 bit platform desktop with no issues at all - I believe W7 found and loaded correct the driver for the 600 adp. --- or you can check for the correct driver for the adp. in the Device Manager if you decide to try the USB adp.'r

  • No automatic connection to a wireless router after startup!

After adding a new wireless router to my home network an iMac G5 does not automatically connect to the wireless network after startup.
And so the story began: I'm running a wireless network for years without problems at my home. The wireless router is a Orinoco 102.11b with 128-Bit WEP encryption and I have 4 different Mac connected to it.
Because I wanted to use the higher 54 MBit/s speed and a more secure encryption for my network I've installed a LINKSYS wireless router and configured it for 102.11g and WPA2.
Everything worked fine except the automatic connection after restart on my iMac G5 running Mac OS 10.4.10. I can connect to the new wireless router but I have to do it manually after each restart. The password is therefore stored in the login keychain. The connection can be established automatically after sleep but not after startup...
So I switchted the connection back to the old router and got unfortunately the same behaviour. The iMac does not connect any more automatically to the router after startup. I removed the new router from the network, deleted all wireless passwords from the system and login keychains, created new keychains, switched back and forth the preferred vs. automatic network selection, created new locations, changed the root password and so on...
It seems that the new password entry in the system keychain causes an error in the password encryption of the system keychain which prevents the automatic connection to the network after startup. Replacing the keychains from my backup does not work either after I've once created a the system keychain.
Is there any log file, which may proof my assumption or can give me some more information of the erroneous login process to the wireless network during startup.

One thing that can work, try this, *please ignore the exact symptoms and connection and Hardware types*, it's worked for many others than the stated...

  • E3200 - Dropping wireless connection on the Mac

Pros: Gig Eth switch, no front-facing indicator lights, familiar web interface...
Cons: WiFi Protected Setup doesn't belong. Continually drops wireless connections to my Mac Book Pro (but none of my other devices), which worked just fine on the E3000 this unit replaced and works perfectly on other WiFi networks. REALLY SLOW web interface - average time to move from one page to the next is something north of 9 seconds. Again, never a problem with the E3000 that this unit replaced. Price? I wouldn't complain about price if this thing actually worked as expected.
Other Thoughts: I'm hoping it's just a flaky/defective unit and not indicative of the overall quality of newer Linksys products. Firmware isn't the issue - it's running the latest one from Linksys' site.

First of all please verify that you have got a 802.11n card in your computer. New generation routers (i.e. E3200) speaks an entirely different language with 802.11g cards, so while those adapters can work with the E3200, but they are not optimized to provide good performance. It is like having to translate from one language to another in real time when going from N to G.
Well, there are few things you should keep in mind with regards to N routers:
    1) For the best possible speeds, you need to be using WPA2-AES as your security mode. Any other security mode will see your speed/range capped.
Any G devices in your wireless network will tend to hamper the performance of your overall network.
Ensure that your router is running the latest firmware from homesupport.cisco.com The new firmware includes performance enhancements and fixes.
The router by default uses a channel setting of auto, which means that it would keep switching channels depending on the interference. I’d recommend you set it to a fixed channel. Usually, 1, 3, 6 and 9 give you the best performance depending on your environment of course. I’d suggest you try different channels, observing each for a while, to see which gives you the best performance. You can follow the link here on how to change channels.

  • WRT54GX2 Dropping Wireless Connections

I've got the WRT54GX2 with updated firmware and my built in intel adapter in my laptop with updated drivers.  I keep losing my wireless connection and I have no idea why.  I know it's not my laptop because I have another computer with a linksys wireless card installed an it losses the connection too whenever my laptop does.  The strange thing is though I don't lose my network just my connection to it.  I can open up the wireless controls and view my network (as well as my neighbors) but if I click connect it says "unable to connect".  I know it's not my authentication because I'll be connected then lose my connection and then get it back without ever changing a setting.  Does anybody have any ideas on this?
This happens more often when I've been connected or am connected to a p2p network.  Is the p2p traffic overloading my router?
Thanks in advance for any help.

OK well I have stayed away from my file sharing programs and I'm still having the same problem. I live in a townhouse and I think the problem is interference from the neighbors routers. During the day (when I'm lucky enough to be home) it works fine then about the time schools start letting out more and more networks start to show up and I start to have problems. I've been able to view up to 8 networks at the same time. My network does have a unique SSID and broadcast is enabled. I have changed to default IP address too.
I don't know how to stay +/- 5 channels when there are that many networks though. Can someone explain to me how the "auto" setting for channel works? Is it any good? It doesn't seem to be working for me very well. The main reason I ask is apparently at least one of my strongest neighboring networks is using some type of auto channel since over the past for days they have shown 3 different channels. I have 2 strong networks near by one on channel 6 and the other changes channels. I have a medium strength network on channel 11 too. Several weaker networks too. I've tried channels 1,2,3,6,8,11 all with the same intermittent problem.
I did check my cordless phone and it does use both the 2.4 and 5Ghz ranges but it doesn't seem to cause a problem. I can be right next to my laptop or the router while talking on the phone and there are no problems.
I'll be trying the beacon interval next to see if that helps.
Obviously though the problem is with the router picking up all the other signals though not my laptop, I say this because my network is still visible but I can't connect. Leading me to believe that my router is too busy to respond to me. Would turning off DHCP and assigning everything by MAC address help? Why couldn't Linksys just put a setting in there to ignore other routers?
Well that was my book size response to keep everyone updated on my and what appears to be other peoples problems.

  • Urgent! T420 with N6205 keeps dropping wireless connection and cannot recover

    Hello everyone,
I bought my T420 model with N6205 network card last December, since then, the wireless connection never functions well. Here's the problem(it happens in my apartment):
Every once in a while (normally within four to five days), my wireless connection drops automatically. It would first appear as  no connection and it'll try to reconnect, then it appears as successful connected for 5 to 10 seconds(but definitely no internet access), and it'll drop the connection completely again, then automatically repeat :reconnect, drop, reconnect, drop ... never stops. Though I can still use cable to connect to my router to have internet access.
This problem occurs to none of my smartphones, ipad, ipod touch, my old laptop and my roomates' wireless devices under the same wirless environment. They always have solid wireless connection.
Of course, regular approaches have been taken trying to solve the problem:
    1. manually disable wireless functionality on my T420, and enable it again
    failed
    2. reboot computer
    failed
    3.  go to power manager and turn PCI express off
    failed
    4. uncheck allow the wireless LAN radio to be turned off when inactive
    failed
5.updated to the latest driver through lenovo
    failed
    6. restart router
    successful
So it may be that I've got a bad router? This is why I didn't post my problem in the first place, since I was hoping it may disappear with other routers.
I changed to a new router, the problem persists.
There's no way I can restart the router every time when my laptop looses connection, it'll affect the other users.
Based on the description of my problem, I believe there's a great chance there's something wrong with my T420 rather than with my router.
Is there anybody who can help me with this?
Can lenovo staff see this post?
Any suggestion about who I should turn to?
    Thanks a lot.

What security mode are you using.
WPA or WPA2? You could change the router to WPA only and see if that helps. I have see some portable devices that don't negotiate the protcol properly but never a notebook. If you have Bluetooth turn it off. It seems to affect my 1x1.
I have the 1x1 card and it pretty bad connecting at 24 to 48 Mbps only with a good signal. I don't know why Realtek is used in a Business class notebook. Maybe some others can add what they have and is working 100%.

  • WRT54G keeps dropping wireless connections

Wired connection to the router works fine. But it drops all the wireless devices (PC, phone, tablet) multiple times each day, sometimes only 30-60 minutes after reconnecting. Power cycling the router "fixes" the router and allows reconnection. There are 2 topics in the FAQ section that looked helpful:
Getting poor or no signal from a wireless router
Top causes of dropping wireless connection on a Linksys router
but clicking on those does not bring up anything. Anyone know where to find those 2 FAQs? Any other ideas for what might be causing this?

Hi. You may need to do firmware upgrade on your router as is the case these days for legacy routers.  What is the hardware version by the way? You can find it at the bottom of the router right after the tiny print of the model. Access homesupport.cisco.com and search for the model. When you get the router's page click downloads below support sections and from there you have to select the hardware version, once you do that you will see the firmware version for the said hardware version. Usually it is a bin file when you save it and you can open that one on the router's page. Once you access your router's page go to Administration and click Firmware Upgrade and select the file you downloaded from the website. Make sure that you do this upgrade with a computer plugged-in to the router. When upgrade is done, you do a 30-second reset and unplug/replug the router also for 30 seconds. You may refer to this link http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=80&vw=1&articleid=4030.
As for the link for Getting poor or no signal from a wireless router, I found this one from Cisco's public kb site but not able to for the other one but I believe they are related.
    http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=d9a3b1b2039741948a2365b053a93ea8_3759.xml&pid=80&r...
Try to change channels as well on your router: you can try 1,3,6,9. Make sure the router is placed at least 3 feet above ground and check the antenna as well if it is still okay.

  • WRK54G dropping wireless connections

    Hi,
    I have a WRK54 firmware Version 1.56.01
It keeps dropping wireless connections and can't get back on, requires restarting (power) the router to allow wireless working again.
I have set the MTU to 1300
Doesn't allow me to update the firmware, error "Upgrade action is not finish!! Upgrade file pattern error."
    Using Windows XP SP2
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Sercan

Are you trying to Upgrade the firmware on your Router from your Wireless Computer? If yes, then you can Hardwired your computer to the Router using an Ethernet Cable and then try to upgrade the firmware of your Router....
If still you are Unable to upgrade the firmware on your Router, then you need to Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable..... Now you can try to upgrade the firmware on your Router.

  • WRT330N Dropping Wireless Connections

I have a WRT330N which I have been using for a while with a couple of wired connections and 3 wireless connections.
It has been working great for months, but has suddenly started dropping wireless connections.  I basically haven't touch the thing since I set it up and it has worked flawlessly.
Any idea why it would suddenly start behaving this way?  Nothing else about the environment has changed either.
    Could it be dying?
BTW, it will drop connections with a system literally sitting right next to it.. so distance isn't an issue.

Try to upgrade the firmware of the router .
And also do not use any electronic devices in the range of router .

  • Iphone 3 drops wireless connection every 2 seconds, then reconnects, Iphone 4 works fine with same wireless

My wife has an iphone 3 running 4.2.1 (I think thats as high as it can go?) and every two seconds it drops the wireless connection, then reconnects for 2 seconds. I'm using Plusnet wireless and my iphone 4 connects fine to it. Anyone got any ideas?

If no change after resetting network settings on the iPhone and/or after restoring the iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the backup and if the same with different wi-fi networks the iPhone has access to, there is a hardware problem with the wireless card or with something else.

  • Mac Pro Drops Wireless Connection to Airport Extreme

I have a Mac Pro and every time I leave the machine for several hours when I return the Airport signal strength indicator is blank and I have to re-choose my network name to get back on the network.
As background, my Mac Pro is setup to never go to sleep as it is hosting some web sites, the only thing that sleeps is the display, so I don't think it is any kind of issue on wake from sleep . . . it just drops the signal at some point.
Has anyone ever heard of this kind of issue? It has always been this way and I just moved my Mac Pro to a location in my house where a wired connection is no longer feasible so I really want to try and resolve it... THANKS
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Slow connections, weak signal, dropped, lost signal after sleep...
While Apple has a good "troubleshooting networking" the Mac Pro using Wireless has had more of its own. I would pick up a Netgear router, go wired.

  • Printer keeps dropping wireless connection after working for a while

My computer stops being able to communicate with the printer wirelessly even thought the printer says it is connected to the network and both the printer and computer are on the same network. What happens is I connect the printer to the network and print something from my computer. Then, after a short while, half an hour maybe, when the printer shows it is connected to the network, I try to print but my computer can't find the printer. The message say the printer cannot be found. If I go to the printer, and reconnect with the wireless connection wizard I can print. But after a short time, I won't be able to print again and have to do the wireless connection wizard again. Wireless direct is off. Don't know if that matters.

These settings are for setting up your wireless printer to stay connected to your router, keep wireless devices better connected and makes your router secure and hack proof.
Set a static IP in the printer (click here) outside the DHCP range of the router (check your manual). This is for Linksys routers but can be used for all routers. Verify your DHCP range and change this first if needed. More Wireless Printing help is here (Windows solution 4, static IP).
Verify in the printer that 'Auto Off/Sleep' is disabled.  Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) by going to the printers IP address in your browsers address bar, click Settings Tab/Auto Off. Or use the Printer Assistant, Printer Home Page (EWS). Also check your Printers Properties.
If the printer supports and has IPv6 enabled, turn off IPv6 in the printer.
If needed and you assigned a static IP address, try using 8.8.8.8 for the Preferred DNS server and 8.8.4.4 at the Alternate DNS server.
In the router: (Refer to your router manual for information)
Use a fixed wireless channel like 1, 6 or 11, never 'auto', try channel 1 first then the rest.
Set router to 20Mhz only, or 145Mbps depending on router.
Always use WPA2-AES (Personal) encryption, but you can try ‘mixed’ mode.
Disable WPS and never use it and disable UPnP for the routers security. Nobody can hack your system now and helps with wireless connectivity (if you want to know why, search the web).
If you have a dual band router (2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz bands), make sure the SSID’s are NOT the same, they must be different for all bands, even for any Guest networks.
    SSID broadcast must be enabled.
Save all settings. Power off both, wait 2 mins.  Power on router wait 2 mins.
Power on printer and verify it reconnects to router.

Have HP Laserjet P1102w printer. (Serial# edited Serial Number by Moderator) (Firmware 20130703)
    Windows 7(64bit)
    Printer on wireless home network.
For a period of time the printer prints wirelessly and prints from EPRINT EMail address OK.

After some period of time, however, the printer quits responding.
It did not wake when print received.Normally wakes itself when print received.
I manually turn it back on (front panel power button) and observe the following:
The blue wireless light is on.
The blue error light is on indicating no error.
the green light also is on.
Open Control Panel(View devices and printers) on computer and it shows printer error.

  • Wi-Fi Connects then drops after 1min.

Ok, Hello Everyone I really need some help with the C6-01. I really like it alot, but it won't hold a Wi-Fi connection for more than 1min., unless their is an app/program running that utilizes the connection, at which point when the app/program is closed the phone drops the connection. Nokia tier 2 tech support said this is not normal and could not recreate the problem. I have tried mutiple routers with the same results. I believe it's the phone because I have received 2 replacement phones from the retailer and all 3 phones have this problem. Nokia tech support wants me to send it in for repair, but I can't be without my phone for 8 to 10 days that's not including shipping time.
