Mac Crashed... Mail Account Missing

I went to my desk earlier today to find my mac completely locked up and not responding to anything(has never happened before). To get it out of this, I held the power button and did a hard shutdown and then rebooted. As I normally do when I restarted, I opened up Mail and Safari, only to be prompted with a setup your mail account window, the one you get when you open it the first time. I closed it and tried it again, with the same result. I havent had time to mess around and see if I could find the account file, but I was wondering if I did find it if it was probably corrupt, or if there is any way to get back my emails.

Hi -
I just suffered a similar problem. You will have lost your original Preferences file for Mail.app. See thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7922931 and others in this forum.
Hope this helps,
Peter

  • Upgraded OSX to 10.6.4 and my .mac/me mail account has disappeared

Upgraded this morning, and my.mac/me mail account has disappeared.
When I "Add Account", I get this message..

    ANy ideas?

I'd ask in the MobileMe forums first:

    then the Snow Lewopard forums:

As this sounds less like a machine-specific issue than a general OS or MobileMe issue, I would think you are more likely to find a solution in either of those two areas.

  • .Mac e-mail account using Mail

I have a .Mac e-mail account and use Mail to manage several e-mail accounts on multiple computers. I use .Mac to synchronize mail, address books, etc., on those computers. The POP accounts that I have deliver each e-mail to each computer, including my iPhone. The .Mac account does not, once it is received on one computer (or my iPhone), then it will not be delivered on the other computers (or my iPhone). My question is, how do I let .Mac know or Mail know that I want my e-mails to remain on the server so that each computer will get a copy of my mac.com e-mails (including my iPhone)?

If you have set up .Mac to use IMAP on all devices, each mail should arrive on each device.
There are two situation, where the effect you describe may happen:
    1.
You use POP3 and have enabled to delete the mail after retrieving it. That way the mail arrives only on the first device checking your .Mac account.
    2.
You use IMAP, but delete or move a mail on one device. IMAP stores all information server side. That way, if you delete a mail, it gets deleted on the server so it won't get delivered to any other device.
When using IMAP, no device does get any copy - with IMAP you get displayed the server side information. All modifications are made directly on the server.

  • What will happen to my mac e-mail account if I don't go to Icloud

I have just updated to Snow Leopard but do not want to add the extra memory to run Lion.  When Mobile me finishes if I don't join icloud will I still have an email account with mac.  I do not have anyother mac devises so really don't think I need icloud?

If you do not migrate your MobileMe account to iCloud before the end of June it will cease to work, everything will be deleted, and you will lose your email address.
You can migrate from MobileMe to iCloud at http://me.com/move even with Snow Leopard: when asked to confirm that your Mac is running Lion just lie and say 'yes'. Of course you won't be able to access iCloud directly from your Mac.
If you have MobileMe mail set up to collect mail from external POP accounts you should cancel this before migrating, or you may find it still working in iCloud (where it isn't supposed to) and with no way of stopping it.
This will be the situation with Snow Leopard when you have migrated:
Your email, calendars, and 'Find my iPhone' will be migrated to iCloud. Contacts and Bookmarks cannot be migrated from a Snow Leopard Mac.
Your iDisk, together with website hosting and Gallery, will continue to work as before until next June.
Syncing of Dashboard Widgets, Dock Items and Keychains between Macs, and Mail Accounts, Mail Rules, System Preferences, Signatures & Smart Mailboxes between Macs & iOS devices, will cease altogether.
You will be able to access email and calendars on the iCloud website at http://icloud.com provided your browser is reasonably up-to-date.
You will not be able to sync contacts or bookmarks from a pre-Lion Mac.
You will be able to enter the server settings for email manually in the Mail application and access your email.
You will not be able to sync your calendars directly.
Some people have been able to set up calendar syncing by using the method detailed here - this is an unsupported hack and may not be reliable, and may stop working at some future point.  BusyCal is an iCal-like calendar application with extra facilities: it can sync with the iCloud Calendar while running on Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion.
There appears to be no method of syncing contacts (though Address Book on a Mac can be synced with Google or Yahoo address books - I don't know how reliable this is).

  • Apple Mail account missing in Mac and iphone

Last Sunday, one of my mail accounts disappeared in apple mac.
This morning, the same mail account disappeared in iphone.
I did not delete any account.
What's more strange is that the account seems to exist since I cannot add a new account using the same setting/information. It says the same account already exists
I have exactly the same mail settings on mac, iphone and iPad. Hopefully my ipad won't get screwed up.

I just had an account vanish on my apple mail. I was able to re-enter it though.

  • Gmail with 2 Macs with Mail accounts

I have 2 macs and so have the same mail accounts on both.
With my @mac mail and my other provider's mail, I have no problem.
However, with gmail only one computer receives mails - whichever computer gets mail first. The email will stay on the gmail board but will not then go to the other mac (although it will go to the iPhone).
I am configured to POP, although to IMAP it was the same.
I have looked all over for buttons to press and found nothing.
Does anyone have some ideas that I can do?
Thanks very much for any help.

    Hi,
I think you need to be using IMAP for everything to stay in sync. The @mac.com mail uses IMAP.
Make sure you've changed the settings for your gmail account at www.gmail.com to use IMAP and then change both computers to make sure each account is configured to retrieve the email via IMAP.

  • Mac deletes mail account every time I quit Mail

    Using iMac running Lion
I have set up my Mail account and after I quit Mail and restart the program it prompts me to set up an account. Mail settings aren't saved. I've tried going in through System Preferences to set up a Mail account and it will not save in System Preferences either after I quit the Mail app. Tried rebooting my computer and it's not a solution either.

Could be a glitch in the software, try updating the software. Click the apple icon on the top left corner of the screen and click software update. Then proceed onto installing the latest updates and then see if your problem is fixed.

  • Remote access to non mac e-mail account

My office is based in UK where I have a dual processor 1.8 G5. I use a 12" G4 laptop to pick up e-mails when travelling abroad. Currently, the only method that my ISP offers is a dial up account using a UK number that gets very expensive due to the number and size of the associated e-mail attachments. I understand there is a PC programme that allows a secure connection to the office PC through the internet hence giving access to my e-mails. However, my local Apple store cannot help with a MAC equivalent. From what I was told, Remote Desktop 3 does not seem to offer this facility. Neither can my ISP help as their webmail system only allows me to read certain size attachments and is very cumbersome to use.
    Can anyone help?

Well, one possibility is to enable Remote Access on your dp 1.8 G5, install X11 on your G4 laptop and Thunderbird on your dp 1.8 G5. Then you can use Thunderbird (running on your dp 1.8 G5) to read your email; from your laptop, start X11, and in the default xterm window do ssh -X <your dp 1.8 G5's IP-address or hostname>; after logging in, run Thunderbird. ssh will route the X11 requests from the Thunderbird client over its secure connection to your laptop's X11 server.

Just started noticing that my E-mails are not coming through on my .mac account.  One computer has a bunch of foreign mail on there.  My other computer does not recognize my password.  Is there a network problem?

  • Saved Mail Account missing

    Hi there
So I've attempted to set up a Microsoft exchange account on my iPhone 4S.
I couldn't remember my username from the top of my head, so I saved the account and thought I'd update it after confirming the details.
Surprisingly, when I went back into mail, contacts, calendars, my new account wasn't on the list!
I figured it was not have actually saved it, so I tried to create it again. However when I tried to create it, I get an error message "a duplicate account already exists".
What the??  Why can't I retrieve the draft account then?
I turned my phone off and on again but that didn't help... It's totally screwy.
    Please help!

Use Setup Assistant when your new Mac first starts up.  See Using Setup Assistant on Lion (it's a bit more complete).
Unless you choose to omit things, that will set your new Mac up exactly like the old one, except for a few preferences, etc., that may be different for the different hardware.
If your old Mac isn't running Lion, there will be some other differences, too.  See Changes in Lion from Snow Leopard.

  • How do I synchronize my e-mail accounts and folders

    Hi everybody on this line...
I am using a Powerbook + a Mini mac and I would very much like to read/delete/save all my incoming e-mail on both machines without doing the work twice (on each machine). So how do I synchronize my e-mail accounts and folders (when I delete on e-mail on one of the mac it will also be deleted on the other machine or if I move an e-mail to a folder, it would also me moved to the same folder on the other machine).
I am award of the possibilities that .mac give me but as far as I know I can only use .mac for my mac e-mail account ([email protected]) and not for my other accounts that I have from my internet provider ([email protected]) which is a pop account.
I hope you understand my question.
    Thanks in advance

    You're welcome.
Could you please make a totally run down (step by step) of
how to synchronize one mail account between to machines.
There is nothing else to say, really. Locally stored mailboxes cannot be synchronized, period. Mailboxes stored on the server are synchronized automatically without you having to do anything else. If there is something you don't understand, you'll have to ask specific questions.
The only way to have an exact copy of all your mail in both computers for locally stored mailboxes is to copy the entire ~/Library/Mail folder between them every time. Mail shouldn't be running on either computer while you do this, and it would be a good idea to copy ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist as well.
right now the inbox of my Imap account is showed
together with my other e-mail accounts inboxex
As it should be. Mail organizes the standard mailboxes by type instead of by account, so that you can look at them both individually and combined as if you had just one of each type.
ut it is also showed futher down in my "menu" wtihin
the mail program, with a logo as a black ball,
together with two folders that I have made (Prut
mappe) and (choir OF young believers).
This is also normal. I assume the "menu" you're talking about is the mailboxes list. Since Mail organizes standard mailboxes by type, the rest of mailboxes must be shown separately. In Mail 2.x, local custom "On My Mac" mailboxes are shown ungrouped at the root level of the mailboxes list, and an account group is displayed for each IMAP account to organize custom mailboxes stored on the server.

Any clue, how i can add a mail account to apple mail app, but with separate password / pin to open it.
Years ago there was a program called mail switcher which added this functionality, but thats gone.
    cheers
    Tom

They would have to be logged in as separate users in order not to see your account in Mail. Whatever accounts put in Mail under your account will show up. All mail accounts usually have there own user and password. The only thing you can do is to remove the password from Keychain and take the account offline so you don't keep getting prompts for passwords each time it checks for mail.
    Not a great solution.
Best way is to give the other user their own user account with their own mail and enable fast user swithcing to log between the different users if all access the computer frequently.
