Sounds to me like the file is probably corrupt. If you had hard drive corruption or damage, that could easily result in recovered files not being fully intact. If you were trying to recover accidentally deleted files, it's possible they might have been partially overwritten before recovering. There are never any guarantees with file recovery.
Without more information on the circumstances that led you to try recovery, it's hard to give advice on what to try from here. You could always try another file recovery tool, like Data Rescue 3. Just be sure you're taking appropriate precautions when doing recovery. See Recovering deleted files.

The less you pay with Data Recovery Tools, then usually the less you will recover. The App Store has a half dozen or more. I would be doing some googling to compare the success people have had with them. It all boils down to how important is the data to you that you want retrieved? Some Computer stores will do it, but then you are really looking at extroadinary costs. So weigh up the value of your data v's the cost of the recovery program.

  • Formatted external hard drive from PC to Mac - Data Recovery Needed

I formatted an external hard drive configured to (PC) for a Mac.
I clicked erase data by accident during the process of formatting --  My old files are no longer there now.
Is there a way to recover the old files that I had on there before the reformat?
Someone please say yes and tell me it's possible......

    Not very likely.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

Just lost a very large Final Cut Pro project that was in process when a Firewire disk was improperly disconnected.
    The entire project folder disappeared.
Any suggestions short of suicide will be appreciated.

  • Data Recovery Software for Mac.

I have 2 questions regarding data recovery from an external drive (WD My Book Essential).
    1. During a Bootcamp install, the backup taken using WD Smartware software has been replaced by a Windows folder and I cannot read the drive after reinstalling SL on my Mac Mini to retrieve my backup. If I erase the drive (as the software is asking me to do), can I then recover the lost backup files using data recovery software or will the file system on the external drive cause a problem. (Format is NTFS)
    2. Which data recovery software is best for for use on a Mac? Or do I recover using Windows software instead?
    Thanks.

If you want to recover data from a Windows partition, you probably need to use Windows recovery software. I'm not aware of any Mac data recovery software that can work with an NTFS partition, though there might be something out there I've missed. Do not erase the Bootcamp partition before attempting to use any recovery software if you can possibly avoid doing so (use Windows volume repair software if the volume won't mount); that will just make the recovery far more difficult.
    Good luck.

    Hello,
In mid august I bought the new Macbook air 13" Intel Core i5 for education use. And for the last 2 months I have been using it fulltime at the university. This means I have a lot of very emportent and irreplaceable notes and papers on my hard drive.
So here is the thing! Last week my Mac had a water damage in my computer bag and the screen is now burned out.. My insurance won't cover a new one and before I have the money, I need to recover all my files from my hard drive because I need them i school! I have looked for an adapter that I can use to connect the hard drive to another machine but because of the new product it is impossible to find!
Can anybody help me? I am desperate to find a way to get to my files!
    From a hopefull Mac-user!

  • Data recovery software that help recover lost partition due to using Disk Recovery Assistant on a 2TB HDD?

I Just use the Disk Recovery Assistant on my 2TB HDD and it wipe it clean. What are the best data recovery tool out there that allow me to recover the lost partition and see the file in folders view not files view like in some data recovery like Disk Drill?
using ML 10.8 something I tried appleXsoft but no luck.

    My best suggestion is
    Stellar Phoenix Mac Data Recovery
    http://www.macintosh-data-recovery.com/
Download the free trial version of the software and use the option "Search Lost/Deleted Volumes", It will scan the drive and show you all lost partitions list on preview. Once you click on the selected partition it will show you again 3 options ,
Quick Recovery- This option is very effective on case of volume corruption
Advanced Recovery- This option recovers data from formatted volume and scans each and every block of volume for lost data.
Deleted File Recovery.- It scans unused blocks of volume to recover deleted data.
On successful recovery the software will show the files in folders view with the folder structure..In case you are unable to see the desired results you would need to go for Raw Recovery which will show results on file basis. This option is only required incase the previous option does not give you the desired results.
    Cheers !!

  • HFS partition data recovery

    Hello,
I damaged my partition table and now I need to recover the data of my external (backup) disk. I first tried repair the partition table with TestDisk but I had no success.
I now tried the demo version of Mac Data Recovery which can list the files http://www.diskdoctors.net/mac-data-recovery/software.html
Do you know of a free alternative of such a software ?
    Thanks,
    Tex

Most people use and recommend highly Data Rescue 3
    http://www.prosoftengineering.com/
Yes, demo to know if it can see anything, maybe not the right tool for your type of problem.
And then there is iPartition - never used and have no knowledge of features.
Of course redundancy is best backup strategy, more than one, always one set that is off line, maybe more than one backup method, such as TimeMachine, SuperDuper, etc.
No free lunch (someone probably had to test, develop etc unless maybe hard drive vendor utility).
When it comes to drives that won't mount or work at all in OS, there are hardware sector copying tools that run around $450+ like DiscJockey.

  • Help! hard drive failure and data recovery

I am a happy PC-traitor who has been using my Macbook successfully for over a year now. I love the Mac.
    Until now.
Last night, while downloading torrents onto my computer, it froze. I restarted. A blinking folder with a question mark was displayed. I tried resetting the PRAM. Disk Utility does not see my hard drive, so I cannot attempt to repair it.
In short, I think it's dead.
Disk recovery is so incredibly expensive! Can I stick the hard drive into an external housing and access the data via Firewire? Can I freeze it overnight? I'm desperate! I can't afford a data recovery service. Help!

If she's dead, she's dead. Could be a loose cable. If you boot from a DVD and DU can;t see the HD, that's usually a really bad sign.
If you are comfortable removing it, you can try something like
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/U2NV2SPATA/
which will allow you to mount just about any HD via USB.
    You can try stuff like
    http://www.macintosh-data-recovery.com/download-mac-data-recovery.php
    http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1
    http://prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
And then there's DiskWarrior and TechTool.
Some of these may see HD's that won't mount and allow you to recover data.
Others may chime in with more detailed experiences.

  • Data recovery question / challenge...

Please email me if you have any advice: [email protected] / challenge:Is there a tool by hyperion or anyone else, that will recover data from a valid index file & page file? As an administrator you can only export cubes through the server process, which is great when the server process is not locked up. Assuming that the Essbase server is not involved, a data recovery tool is needed. Hyperion must know how it reads and writes data to the index and page file, therefore, have they or can they create a tool to do so when the server process is not available. I am sure I am not the only one who would benefit from a data recovery utility such as this.Problem Source:I have an Essbase server that freezes after going through the startup sequence. The server process starts fine (I can run ports, dump, etc), then as soon as I start ANY application the server process is locked up. (no recovering free space it appears to start the app fine, just locked up) support says something is corrupted. (I agree) 1 strange behavior is that client timed out messages are not thrown. Clients just sit locked up when connecting. This implies that the server is "alive" just stuck on or thinking really hard about something. Either way, it's not responsive from them on, as no client threads are spawned.

Don't know of a utility that does what you are looking to do. Do you have a valid tape backup of your directory structure? have you tried restoring back to when the server was working?Something to try, no guarantees it will work, your problem might be a corrupt security file. Go into the essbase directory, find a file called essbase.sec and rename it to essbase.old. then find a file called essbase.bak and rename it to essbase.sec. Restart your server and see if it solves your problem.Hope this helps.

  • I would like to know if anyone in has experienced problems with Stellar Phoenix Data Recovery and if I have ultimately fallen for a scam?

I had accidentally deleted important files from my hard drive and emptied them from my trash can on my MacBook Pro. I sought a variety of data recvery packages but none were really successful apart from one - the now infamous Stellar Phoenix Mac Data Recovery Version 6.0. Upon using what I was led to believe was a trial version, the files I was looking for could in fact be found. However, in order to recover them I had to purchase a £94.80 licence. In deperatation I chose to do this. Upon attempting to recover the files, I went to check the location I saved them into and low and behold there was a folfer called a 'Root' Folder which was completely EMPTY.
Stellar Phoenix have done little except take the money and run
I would greatly appreciate it if you alert me to free data recovery options as I dont want to be scammed by unreliable apple 3rd party providers.

It sounds like that your drive is corrupted. You should try to format it for fixing this problem.
But, to recover your original data, you are supposed to run a hard disk recovery software at first and format this disk afterwards for saving the physical drive. This free one can retrieve your data completely as it helps my friend restore all his data. Go get it there: http://goo.gl/wQW0Ur
Add some tips: You should not rewrite your wanted data with any new file in case of data loss.
You should back up your important data all the time on a different drive in the future.
    Hope it works.

I accidently deleted a video and I've tried a couple different data recovery tools and havne't had any luck.  Has anyone ever been able to use something that like that and if so what did you use?  I'd even be willing to pay a little as it has sentimental value, but I'd like to have a first hand review saying it actually works.

  • Data recovery house tainted my Mac-only files: help!

I sent a failed ext. FW drive (clicking sound, wouldn’t mount) to a fairly-well-known data recovery specialist that advertised PC and Mac formats. The drive contained numerous Mac-only files, including Sound Designer II audio files (.sd2), Final Cut Pro (.fcp), and Digital Performer files (native, no suffix), to name a few.
After said specialist started working on the drive, it became frighteningly apparent that they were not up to speed on Mac systems. To make a long story short, after a couple of weeks I received a hard drive formatted FAT32, and every Mac-only file showed up in Finder as a Unix Executable file.
My first thought was they were using Windows-based software and had corrupted all my Mac-only files beyond repair. Forging ahead and knowing nothing about scripts, I used a 3rd party program called Super Get Info and was able to change the Type and Author of the Digital Performer files, and got them to open. So far, so good. But changing the Type and Author of the .sd2 files didn’t yield the same results; Finder sees the type, size, etc. but no audio program (DP, Peak, Jam) will open them.
Thinking I was screwed, I opened another project in DP that contained audio files which were still recognized in Finder as Unix Executables, and they played! I have no idea why this works---no other program will open them independently---but it shows if I can get an app to recognize them, they are still valid files.
Is there a way to dig deeper, besides just changing the Type and Author, to essentially get back all the header(?) information that was originally there in the .sd2 files (before the "data recovery") so an audio program can see that these are indeed valid files and legit to operate on? Something in Developer Tools, 3rd party, etc.?
    Thanks,
    Roger

G5 2.3gHz Dual Power Core   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   2.5 GB RAM, multiple FW drives

Extern firewire drives often come formatted as FAT32 - so unless you reformatted it yourself that may have been the way it was. When Mactintosh files are saved to a FAT32 file system, the resource information is written to a file with a ._ added to the front of the file name. If you go to a terminal window and cd to your extern drive, "ls -A" will show if the resource information is there. For a file call "file.s2d", you should see a hidden file call "._file.s2d". Some utilites have trouble creating resource forks on FAT32 drives - so your utility may not be working. Try moving some of your files back to your main drive and correct the Creator and file type there - may be that will work.
