Mac deleting files on its own ?

Hi, I have been running extremely low on harddrive space, I'm down to only 2 GB, however I noticed today that somehow I now have about 10 GB free even though I had not deleted any large files. When I went to look at the breakdown of my HD usage in system profiler only the section labeled Other had decreased, could my computer have deleted these files in the "other" section on its own.
-thanks

What model iMac is it please? Hard for me to tell from your specs.

    I am using an early 2008 MacBook Pro and am having issues with it deleting text on its own (in word, emails, etc.). As I am typing it all of a sudden starts deleting and I can't stop it. This happened once before and it was due to a buldging battery pressing on the track pad. I checked the battery and it appears to be fine. What can I do?

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
    Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
    While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
    After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
    Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
    When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
    If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    *Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • MacBook Pro erased files on its own?

    I have a 13" MacBook Pro that is currently running OS X 10.8.4. About 5 days ago I took a trip with my mother and left the computer at home. Came home yesterday, got on my computer, and noticed that the background had changed. When I tried to access some files I needed for work, they were all gone. All of my files, documents, pictures, music, etc., were gone. My programs were still there (Photoshop, Parallels, etc.), but everything else was not. It was as if someone had entirely reset the computer. I asked my dad and brother about it, and everyone swears that my computer wasn't used while I was gone. Is there any reason why my computer would do that on its own? Is there anyway to get my files back? I have an external HD that thankfully has some files on it, but I haven't backed up my computer recently (which I'm now realizing was a mistake). But, if my files are gone for good I will at least have some of them. I greatly appreciate the help.

    Oh my gosh. I am in idiot. That's exactly what happened. I have a password set on my computer, so someone in my household must have "forgotten" () they used the laptop. I panicked and just went straight for the worst conclusion! Thank you so much!

  • My WD Passport for mac won't recognise its own password or show up on the desktop

    I have a Macbook Pro and have been using the Passport for 3 months without a problem. The cable was pulled out without ejecting the Passport the correct way. Now it doesn't show up on the desktop and a colourless window pops up and asks for the password. Im 100% sure the password is correct. The window thinks about it for about 20sec then shakes to not accept it.
    I have tried to repair the Passport and that has not worked. Does anyone have another solutations to access the HD?
    The passport still works, the light comes on and still spins.
    It seems as if it has forgotten its own password and not recognised by the computer.

    Allan,
    Thank you for your reply.
    Yes the WD Passport for Mac has its own password to access the drive. It is an option that i stupidly activated once it was installed. Previously as i plugged the Passport in it would pop up on my desktop and ask for the password. Which it would accept and then i could access the data. Now nothing comes up on my desktop but still asks for the password but does not accept it. The colour of the window for the password has also changed. It now looks like the "security and privacy" icon that you can find in your systems preferences.
    It seems as if it has forgotten its own password or there is some other security or problem blocking me.
    I obviously wasn't aware that this product had so many problems. I have not installed the Mavericks program to this computer yet as it takes time and im on the road without and solid internet connections.
    I will persist with searching forums and trying to recover the data
    Any information or help would be awesome!!!!

  • Mac mini restarts on its own after shut-down.

    The Mac mini will restart by itself about 10 minutes after shut down. I turned off all the restart options in energy saver. Funning 10.4.8 with the latest firmware instalation.
    Any suggestions how to stop this?

    I have had this problem for a looooong time and I think I finally resolved it. Last weekend I was trying a demo of MacPilot 3 and found Elgato's EyeTV had two items in the Power > Events list. Apparently when you set EyeTV to start up the computer for it's schedule it restarts the computer randomly rather in a reasonable amount of time before the recording begins. Since there were two files, I think 1 was left over from previous EyeTV version and was starting up the computer even though I told EyeTV not to start the computer at a later date. Deleting both files seems to be the solution.

  • Keychain deleting certificate on its own

    My company requires me to install a certificate in keychain that allows me to run MS Communicator for Mac. I have installed this certificate, but it gets removed automatically at various intervals. I can then reinstall the certificate, but the same thing happens, which leaves me in an endless loop. I even make sure the keychain is locked when I exit, but this doesn't stop the certificate from being removed again.
    Any suggestions on why this is happening?
    Thanks,

  • Mac Pro starting on its own.

    I have run across a bug I think. After shutting down a Mac Pro the machine has turned itself on during the night. In Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Startup after power failure has been unchecked. There are no applications that have a 'run during the night' theme so I am at a loss as to why the machine starts itself up. Anybody have any clues?

    I think you're confusing sleep and shut down. If a machine is asleep (which is what it does if you just shut the lid on a laptop) and you plug in or unplug a USB device, the computer will wake up. Of course, if you're unplugging a USB flash drive in this way, you could damage it.
    OTOH, if the machine is shut down, it will not detect removal of a USB device, much less start back up.

  • Why vi dll creates ini file on its own?

    Hello,
    I have built my LabVIEW project as shared library (dll).
    My system looks like this: main exe file loads dll, and this dll loads VI dll.
    With LabVIEW 2011 it was ok, but when I switched to 2013 my VI dll started to write into main exe ini file.
    When dll is loaded those lines appears in main exe ini file:
    [LVRT]
    RTTarget.ApplicationPath=C:\Users\user\Documents\LabVIEW Data\Remote Development\startup.rtexe
    RTTarget.VIPath=C:\Users\user\Documents\LabVIEW Data\Remote Development
    Does someone know what causes this and how to turn it off?

    I got the same thing when I built an exe. I have a custom INI file, it has the following entries:
    [Oscilloscope 2013]
    server.app.propertiesEnabled=True
    server.tcp.serviceName="My Computer/VI Server"
    server.vi.propertiesEnabled=True
    WebServer.TcpAccess="c+*"
    WebServer.ViAccess="+*"
    DebugServerEnabled=False
    DebugServerWaitOnLaunch=True
    FPFont="Segoe UI" 15
    appFont="Segoe UI" 15
    dialogFont="Segoe UI" 15
    systemFont="Segoe UI" 15
    BDFont="Segoe UI" 15
    The only dll it calls is lvanlys.dll. After running the EXE the following are appending to the INI file
    RTTarget.ApplicationPath=C:\Users\XXX\Documents\LabVIEW Data\Remote Development\startup.rtexe
    RTTarget.VIPath=C:\Users\XXX\Documents\LabVIEW Data\Remote Development

  • At times my mac starts typing on its own and the only way i can stop it is to disconnect from power source. any suggestions?

    This is my first Mac, so I am not sure if I have missed something along the way. I really would appreciate any suggestions.....

    Hi Chris, did you solve it?
    I only ask because today, for the first time, I had the appearance of a stuck key for a couple of minutes but I don't think I was even touching the keyboard, I suppose it could conceivably have been caused by a rogue biscuit crumb or something, but coincidentally it was the same key that you reported, the period key typing..............................................................

  • HT1199 My Mac shuts down on its own and it is slow

    Hello,
    My Mac is slow. It sleeps and in order to start it again, i have to force shut it using the power button and restart it.

    I've requested your thread be moved.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3036 is a common reason why you might have slowness, if you installed MacKeeper.  Any System utility that touches System Cache can slow you down.
    If you are backed up, we can explore other reasons:

  • FCPX modifying files on its own?

    Having a very frustrating issue that I have researched but can't find the exact answer to my problem.
    This is the second project that this has happened to and it's wasting SO much time.  Please help.  Here is what is happening -
    I import media to an event and start pulling clips down to the timeline in a project.  Then as I continue to build the edit - several hours in - some of the clips turn up as modified.  Even though they haven't been modied.  The first time this happened It happened with a multi cam clip and I only needed the audio so it didn't screw up the scene because the audio wasn't modified.
    But now it's happening and I need the imagrey.  Why is this happening and how can I fix it?
    The clips were shot with a 5d mark ii and a 5d mark iii. Please help.
    ANY suggestions would be greatly apprecaited.
    Thank you.

    Thanks Luis for your response.  It is very strange.  I imported the clips from the camera cards to my hard drive (external).  Then I imported them using the optimized media feature, converting them to Apple Pro Res 4444.
    When I go to clip and "reveal in finder" it shows that the clip is located in the High Quality Media folder in the Final Cut folders - but even there - in finder - it shows up as a modified file and is red.  See screenshot.
    The only workaround that I have been able to find is to go to the original location of the media and drag it into the timeline from finder.  When asked I choose optimized media again.  This seems to work however all editing that has been done is lost.
    One thing that I have noticed, this has happened twice so far, and both files that have gone up as being modified were at one time or another used to create multicam clips.  However, in one of the cases, it was the multicam clip that eneded up being modified. In the other case, as is shown in both screen shots, there was a clip that I tried to use in a multi cam clip but it didn't work too well.  So I didn't use the multicam clip and just used the clip by itself.
    In both cases - these clips were working fine and then later (presumably after the render completed) they turned up modified.
    Does that help?

  • HT4864 Can I delete email on my iPhone and have my ipad also delete them on its own?

    Can I delete mail on my ipad and have it tell my iPhone to delete it automatically?
    I thought this is what iCloud would do?

    You're welcome.  If you're using a POP account, not even a 10 year old can help you.   You'll have to get an IMAP account (such as iCloud email, Gmail or Yahoo), then forward your old account to your new one until your contacts learn to use your new email address.
