I’m going to get the I Mac and since the new I Mac doesn’t have DVD drive on it I was thinking to get the Samsung SE-506AB Slim Portable Blu-ray Writer in order to burn movies from I movie do I need a special software for that since the SE-506ab comes only with windows software.. but I did check and it is compatible with apple. Can you please advise me and or let me know if I’m buying the right stuff or if there is any other blu ray that will work with the I mac as plug and play.
    Thank you

This freezing reminds me of really old Macs, long ago, in the days of the old-school peripherals like SCSI drives, terminators, scanners and the like. If you had a SCSI conflict, like the wrong device ID's or something, you'd freeze up like that. Back in those days you'd call 800-SOS-APPLE (AAPL?) and they'd run you through disconnecting all your extra hardware - Jaz and Zip drives, CD burners, scanners etc and then eliminate them one by one by adding them incrementally and testing for the freeze/bomb dialog.
But, today we have Firewire and none of those ancient issues (no free lifetime tech support either). My iMac's ports are all full, and I only know which devices are connected when I have to remove something for another device. iSight, scanner, card reader, external hard drive, USB soundsticks, etc. You wouldn't happen to have any SCSI devices hooked up, would you?
Out of curiosity, have you tried a different USB/Firewire port for the hard drive? Or run the hardware test DVD that comes with your computer? This weird freezing seems to suggest a problem with the computer, RAM or network more than a device. Bad devices, in my experience, cause kernel panics, not freezing.

  • Optical Drive doesn't read DVD's

Hi, I own an HP Pavillion dv7 1279wm entertainment laptop. It came installed with Vista, but I installed a free upgrade to Windows 7 that I got from HP. I had a problem where the drive would not read anything; the disc would spin, but eventually the tray would automatically open and tell me to insert a disc. After using Microsoft FixIt, I was able to read CDs, but encountered the same problem when trying to load a DVD. Previous to using Microsoft FixIt, I did use device manager to uninstall the drive and then reboot so Windows 7 would automatically update the driver. I'm thinking that means that it's not a software problem, but if you can think of anything else I can do (short of swapping out drives because I don't have access to another drive) to rule out it being a software problem please let me know. I realize that combo drives typically use different lasers to read CDs and DVDs, so my guess is that the laser that reads DVDs has failed. If that is the case, where can I find the correct replacement part and how do I install it?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Hi Kevin,
If you eject the optical drive tray, you should see just one laser situated towards the centre of the tray - different voltages are applied to this depending on whether it's reading a CD or DVD.
First of all, use a soft, non abrasive material such as cotton or a cotton bud and gently clean the lens.
Check if this has made any difference.
If it still doesn't read DVDs, try following the procedure under the sub-heading 'Let me fix it myself' on the link below to remove the Upper and Lower filters, restart the notebook and see if this helps the issue.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116
If it still doesn't read DVDs, the following procedure will test if your notebook can start from a bootable disc in the optical drive - the advantage of trying this is that it will rule out any possible Windows driver error as the CD/DVD drive is under the control of the Bios when starting the notebook.  So if you find that the notebook will not boot from the DVD, then it's almost certainly a Hardware fault in the optical drive itself and it will need to be replaced.
Using another PC to create a Windows 7 Rescue DVD.  Download the relevant ISO from the link below.
    Windows 7 32bit
    Windows 7 64bit
You need use an application such as ImgBurn to correctly burn the ISO to a DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  Once created, insert the DVD and then restart the notebook and see if it boots from this disc - if it does, let the first screen come up ( this will show repair options etc ) then just remove the DVD and restart the notebook.  If the notebook will not boot from the DVD, it may just load straight into Windows.

  • Macbook pro doesn't read dvds

    HI
I have a problem with my dvd player, it doesn't read dvds anymore. I just makes some noise but doesn't read anything, and then it doesn't want to eject anymore...
It was working very well until now so I really don't know what happenned. Also when i try the application dvd player it says that there's no valid dvd player on my computer.
If anyone could help, that would be great
(sorry for the english, i'm french and computer talk in english is way beyond my league.. )

Try resetting the PRAM/NVRAM and see if the system recognizes the player again. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11243

  • Superdrive on MacBook Pro 2.33 doesn't read dvd's burned on PowerBook G4

    Hi Guys,
recently I bought a new MacBook Pro 2.33, and now I discovered that the Superdrive doesn’t read a few dvd’s that I burned/verified two years ago with the older PowerBook G4 1.6. The dvd’s related are “Ethernity, 1x-4x“. Does somebody know the problem?
    Thanks for precious help.

    Many thanks for answering,
the discs, never used, were stored -imagine- in the "Apple Compact Discs case" - the old case 199x, labeled with permanent marker. Unfortunately my PowerBook G4 was stolen (a sad day), but I can verify they on the friend's G4. I agree about the brand. However I will inform you asap. Thanks again
P.S.: I also tried, by an Apple store, to verify it on same machine

  • Mac Mini doesn't read DVD's

When I insert any DVD into my Mac Mini it says Disc not able to be read by this computer.
It reads CDs fine.. I tried to start the DVD player app and it gives an initialization error and that a valid DVD player could not be found..
    It does have a DVD drive:PiOnEeR DvD-Rw DvR-K06
Any idea why it would read CDs not DVDs and appear to have lost all DVD functionality??
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi, read that this strangely worked for a few Mini owners the other day...
Stand the Mini on it's side & try a DVD.

  • Mac Pro doesn't read DVDs, show them as blank DVDs.

I am running an older Mac Pro with OSX 10.6.8 software. I have been trying to play DVDs through my internal disk drives but everytime I insert them my mac shows them as blank dvds in the finder, even though they play on other machines. I do have an external disk drive set up as well that does read the disks just fine.
I have read through many different forms from different sites and have found similar issues but no solutions. I have tried updating, blowing out the drive with a can of compressed air, yet nothing makes a difference. At first I had thought that maybe the drive had gone bad, however this is happening to both internal drives at the same time and therefore makes me belive that it is a software issue.
As I said, my mac recognizes both drives (SONY DVD RW DW-D150A) but shows the disk as a blank disk with no data on it. I use my disk drives daily and have not done anything new that would have changed the software process.
Please comment if you have any solution. I have yet to find anything that remotely answers my questions. Thank you.

    Hello
Maybe the upper and lower filters must be removed in Windows registry... Follow the instructions in this Microsoft article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
And try to clean the ODD laser because it could be dirty.

  • My mac is not reading dvd's

    Hi there,
I have tried to watch a few non pirated DVD's in the last few days and my mac is not recogising any of them and after several attempts to load, spits them out.
Any ideas as to whats going on?

Check Finder > Preferences > General
Make sure CDs, DVDs, and iPods is selected.
Make sure the disc is free of fingerprints and dust.
And try restarting your Mac and try again.

  • Mac Pro quit reading DVD +/-R

One of our Mac Pros has quit reading burnt DVDs. The DVDs will work on other Machines (one that is identical). I took this to the Apple Store, and they replaced the optical drive, but it still will not read the burnt DVDs.
I've done a software update and tried resetting the PRAM. Any other suggestions before I call the Apple Store back? It is running the latest version of Snow Leopard.
    Thanks

I actually seem to have fixed my problem (*knocks on wood*)
I first resetted my PRAM (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379)
Which resulted in 2 DVDs being read
Then I simply tried a CD lens cleaner which solved the problem
    At least for now

Besides checking the "Disk Utility" - How did you connect the drive the Mac Mini?
Sometimes, some of the external drive might need "extra" juice to make it "run"
I found through "USB hub" would affect the issue, as well, my "home build" USB external drive has two USB connectors - one for data, one for extra power
I need to make sure both connected in order to get it going.
Some other market USB external drives do not need the extra juice - therefore, try other USB port to see if it runs.
Or - maybe the external drive is a "lemon" ??

  • Doesn't iBook G3 DVD-ROM read DVD-RW?

I tried to move data from pc to ibook using DVD-RW media. t.
But my ibook DVD doesn't read it but just spits it out. My iBook G3 500 DVD-rom doesn't read DVD-RW? DVD is MATSHITA DVD-ROM SR-8176. Or should I upgrade firmware? Thanks.

Ronda is on the right track.
Which software are you using to write the DVD-RW on the PC?
The problem probably arises as the when the PC writes the DVD-R it uses a standard (ISO 966) which the iBook can read.
When writing the DVD-RW often PC software will format the disk so it acts like a floppy disk. However this proprietary format will only be readable on the PC with the disc writing software, the disc is unreadable, not just on Macs, but also on PCs as well.
How you correct this depends on the software you are using.
I would change the DVD-RW settings or create a disk image using the DVD burning software and then burn that ISO 9660 image to the DVD-RW, this should then be readable by the iBook.

  • My DVD player is not reading DVDs

I have a Mac Pro running OS 10.6.8, and a Sony DVD RW DW-D150A disc drive.
My problem is that when I load DVD's into the DVD drive, sometimes I get a dialogue box that tells me that I've loaded a blank disc, even when I know I haven't.  The drive does read some DVD's, like mass-distributed stuff, but it doesn't read DVD's I've burned via DVD Studio Pro (on the same machine), or some discs that were burned on another Mac.  It's not just DVD's, either.  A client sent me a DVD with several Quicktime files on it, and I got the same message. (Fortunately, my laptop did read the disc properly).
How do I resolve this?  Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

try a can of compressed air to clean the lens. Could be dirty. a "laser lens cleaning disc" may be helpful. Of course, I shut my Mac pro down, removed the drive, opened 'er up, cleaned the lens with isopropyl, put 'er back together, put the drive in and reconnected it, but hopefully you won't have to go that far.
Of course, the drive may be shot (hopefully not)
    well, good luck...

The subject line says that you are having trouble with iTunes reading a DVD (not surprising as iTunes doesn't read DVDs). However, the body of you post says that you're having trouble with a CD. Can you clarify?
