Mac doesn't start after updating to Mountain Lion

On sunday I installed Mountain Lion on my 3 year old Mac Pro. Usually I leave the computer on over night for backup. On monday I wanted to check my mail and the computer was out. When trying to start the machine I just heard a harddisk noise but not even a startup chime. I wasn't able to start from DVD because the DVD drive wouldn't eject the tray. Safe boot also didn't work.
The machine is now being sent to the shop where I bought it.
Did the computer have a hardware failure or is Mountain Lion the culprit?
Regards
Trixi

If you can't do anything, it's hardware. Mountain Lion can be corrupted and don't boot, but you can use the computer

  • Odd error message that started after update to Mountain Lion

Ever since updating to Mountain Lion, I get this error message every now and then:
Nothing in particular seems to cause it, and there isn't a server to which I'm trying to connect. My computer is a mid 2010 MacBook Pro
Can someone tell me what this means in the first place and how I can fix the problem?
    Thanks!

Open the Time Machine pane in System Preferences. If it shows that Time Machine is ON, click the padlock icon in the lower left corner, if necessary, to unlock it. Scroll to the bottom of the list of backup drives and click Add or Remove Backup Disk. Remove all the disks, then add them back. Quit System Preferences. Test.

after a long in "stop" period, the internet connection (ethernet) doesn't work. before updating to mountain lion this problem didn't exist.

Gave up on the GUI.  This script derived from http://blog.netnerds.net/2012/07/os-x-how-to-setup-nat-on-lion-and-mountain-lion / seems to work for me:
gwdev=en0 # This is my WiFi connection (has Internet connection)
targetdev=en1 # This is the USB to Ethernet adapter (to give Internet connection)
    /sbin/ifconfig $targetdev down
    /sbin/ifconfig bridge0 create

  • After updating to mountain lion on my mac pro I am unable to connect my g-raid

After updating to mountain lion on my mac pro I am unable to connect my g-raid 1T external hard drive using the firewire connection? I have 4 places to plug the firewire into, none work. All ports used to work with Snow leopard?

    Try this:
Boot into Safe Mode then restart normally.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
If this does not work to fix the problem, then:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Line 6 tone port gx doesn't work properly after updating to mountain lion, i'm hearing artefacts, how is that possible?

i am using logic 9 and line 6 toneport gx for recording my guitar. on the previous version of OSx everything worked perfect, but now, after updating to mountain lion, i hear noise after i play something. the settings were: input: toneport, output: coreaudio, 44100, buffer 512. now they are the same and i have noise. i've installed the latest drivers for toneport and changed the buffer settings. when the buffer is large, i can play some seconds without the noise but it appears after 15-20 seconds. and when the buffer is small it appears faster. i assume it has to do something with the buffer size but i don't know for sure. any ideas?

I have the same problem after updating to ML. It's unusuable for recording until it gets sorted out.
I think it's a problem at the Line 6 end. They are aware of it, and are working on some patch/fix to address the strange artifact sounds, so hopefully it will be ready soon.

  • TS3276 hi after updating to Mountain Lion, it becomes difficult to quit Mail, always have to Force Quit. And while Mail is on standby, the fan keeps on running full power, the laptop is hot. Why is this happening?

hi after updating to Mountain Lion, it becomes difficult to quit Mail, always have to Force Quit. And while Mail is on standby, the fan keeps on running full power, the laptop is hot. Why is this happening?

If your computer was hot it wasn't asleep - it either didn't go to sleep or it work up after you put it to sleep. I've seen both things happen. First, read this article and follow the instructions.
    1) For the next few days/weeks pay attention to the blinking light on the front of your computer when you close the lid. Don't put the computer into your backpack/case until it begins to blink. Wait a minute or so after it starts to blink to make sure it doesn't stop blinking - the signal it woke back up.
    2) having followed the above instructions, if you take the computer out and it is hot again or if you take it out and discover it has powered down (you'll know this because when it starts up the battery will be drained and you'll see a progress bar over a ghostly display that will eventually become normal) immediately start the Console program and perform a search on 'sleep' and then 'wake'. This should bring up all the recent log files about sleep state changes (going to sleep and waking up). You should see one for when you put the computer to sleep and put it away and the next one should be just after you got it out. You'll find at least one though that shouldn't be there. That will tell you when the computer work up (when it shouldn't have) and might give a clue as to why.
One of the whys could be a magnet that is making the computer think the lid has been opened.

After updating to Mountain Lion I am having trouble printing on my wifi Epson Workforce 645. I keep getting an error message and my computer is set in the system prefrences to that printer

    What is the error message?
    Try resetting the printer queues:

This update also clears your "computer name" in Syst Prefs > Sharing, and entering a computer name solves network print issues for many.

Option in MAIL to "Add to iPhoto" isn't working after updating to Mountain Lion. Anybody else with this problem or sulution?

A brief search. Or even glancing at the "more like this" list to the right will show that this is a known problem and there is no current solution. Workaround includ saving to the desktop and importing from there or opening in Quick Look and adding to iPhoto from there

  • Mac won't Start after Update

Sure hope someone has an idea for this. Recentlly downloaded the latest update for Mountain lion 10.8.2 I believe, computer restarted, grey screen comes up and apple logo, on the bottom is a progress bar that loads, goes about 1/8 of the way, then disappears and the timing signal comes up and then screen goes to black and computer shuts off. I can not get past that. I was able to get into disk utilities and verify permissions and disk and repair disk but not repair disk permissions. Option doesn't come up. I don't know whats going. Right now it is doing a disk verify anbd said it needs to be prepared so it is doing that. Hope this works. Otherwise what are my options and any idea what has cause this.
As Im typing this this is what happened. Tried repairing  then it came up saying that I should back up all my media and then reinstall everything. Very nice, thanks apple.

    Hello lyndafromcalgary,
You mention a black screen after the startup chime.  Does that mean the screen is normal before the chime?
I would still go through this article and try the things you haven't yet, like resetting the PRAM.

It also requires the computer to be using wi-fi.
