Mac dunce needs help...

My macbook software is currently Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L31a). For some reason, the updates haven't come to me in a few months and I didn't think anything about it. I've tried to plug my iPhone into my Mac to update, but it says that I need the newest version of iTunes (I wasn't getting my iPhone update message either and didn't think about it...like I said, I'm a dunce). To download the latest version of iTunes, it says I need OS 10.6 or better, so I downloaded the new pack (10.6.8). But when I click on the pack, it says I need 10.6 to open the pack, but I cant find where to download 10.6. ARGHHHH!!!
When I click on the 'Software Update' it says there are no new versions for me to download. I know there are newer versions, but how do I download them? Can anyone help?
Cheers!!!

The 10.6.8 you downloaded is an update for 10.6.x

  • BB Desktop Manager no longer works with Mac Maverick - Need Help Urgently

I have been a loyal Blackberry user since the Government of Canada officially began using these cell phones. I feel, however, abandoned by Blackberry (they obviously don't believe that it is easier to retain an existing customer than acquire a new one). I'm using a Blackberry Bold (9900) with a Macbook Pro. Everything was fine until I upgraded my Mac operating system to Maverick; my Blackberry Desktop Manager no longer works, so I cannot sync the content (contacts, calendar) of my phone with my Mac, but that's not the worst of it.
I recently had a momentary lapse and exceeded the 10 password attempts to access my phone... this accidentally wiped my phone clean... and because Desktop Manager does not work with Mac, I do not have a way to recover my data. Rogers was of no help and had Blackberry updated its desktop software months ago, as it should have, this issue would have been moot. I do not know how or why, but I was able to recover most of my data, but I'm not sure just how up-to-date tha data is and am still going through it, but I'm having issues with some functionality.
I'm in the US for several months and have suspended my Canadian services. Prior to the wipe, I was able to use wifi on my phone to send and receive emails with no problem.  After the wipe, I can't send emails or bbms.  I checked my blackberry internet service and all email accounts are good to go. BBMs are another issue.  I need help.  Suggestions please.

Apple has ceased synchronization with Mavericks. The issue lies with Apple, not with the desktop software. To mitigate the lack of sync capabilities in Mavericks you can sync your contacts and calender on your Mac with the usual suspects (Yahoo, Google). Create a backup (archive) for Contacts and Calender on your Mac first, then create one of those email accouonts that allow syncing. On your 9900 and with BlackBerry provisioning enabled create the new or existing email account. See which email accounts can sync with BB, I know Yahoo is working fine. For Yahoo, get the Yahoo Calender sync (a few bucks one-off payment required), Contacts sync works off the shelf within BB. If you reset the 9900 you should be able to restore all data with BB DTM. Please note that emails you received during the 9900 reset and the date of restore will not be available on the device. You will still not be able to sync contacts/calender over BB DTM. I hope that helps.

You need to purchase and install a Mac OS X 10.5 DVD; these are available from sites such as Amazon or eBay.

  • When i try to send  a message in mail it says it cannot use the server. I know very little about macs and need help

i need help with the email on my mac. it says i cannot use the sever. any help would be awesome thank you

If you are trying to connect to your ISP e-mail account. The ISP will help you setup and connect to your e-mail account. So, you might want to give them a call.
Usually, when you are told that you can't use the server it means that there might be an error (either a wrong name/ address / password/ connection type/ etc.) so check your settings again...
Else you could try the following:

  • Installing Elements 11 on Mac. Need help with install error "Setup wants to make changes."

Installing Elements 11 on Mac 10.8.2. Need help with install error:  Setup wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this."  After entering Adobe password, nothing happens.  Locked from further installation.  Any ideas?  Adobe phone support could not help.

Just before letting changes (installation in this case) be made on the system, Mac OS prompts for password & this has to be the Mac system password. This password prompt is the system's own native prompt & would accept the system password only. Please make sure it is the right system password (all/admin rights) and the installaion should run.

  • Switching over from pc to mac and need help!

Ok so I plan on getting the new imac they are revealing today, but I'm not completely sure how to transfer all my music over from the pc and how the iPhone will sync as I've heard that the mac didn't recognize the iPhone after it had already been synced with a pc. I was just going to buy an external hd for the music and other things, but I really don't want to spend $100 plus for something that is only for transfer and some backup. I was considering burning cd's as well as I only have about a 250 song library and many blank cd's. Which choice or other option would be best? As for the not recognizing problem, is there something I have to do to like "format" it for mac and a feature I need to set up on the mac? Any help is appreciated.

    taymon21,
The iPhone will show up on both a Windows-based PC and a Mac without needing to be reformated. From the File Menu in iTunes you can choose to sync your purchased music back to the computer.
In addition the Apple Retail Stores offer a service to move your files over.
You can burn approximately 150-200 songs per CD as a Data CD in iTunes, and import from there if you would like. You can set the CD Burning preference in iTunes in Windows by going to the Edit Menu, Preferences, Advanced Tab, then the burning section. Choose the option for "Data CD"
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • I lost my Mac and need help finding it

I lost my Mac and I need help tracking it and finding it

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If you turned on Find my Mac, open http://www.icloud.com, log in with your Apple ID, and select "Find my iPhone" to track your Mac. Your Mac must be connected to the Internet to be able to track it, but you can lock or wipe it remotely. If you lock or wipe your Mac, you won't be able to track it anymore.
If you haven't turned on Find my Mac on your Mac, I'm sorry but you can't track it

  • New mac user needs help transfering files from Dell...

I have a Dell running Windows XP and need help transfering the files from the dell to the mac.
Also I have no idea what OP system I have, how do you tell which one you have???

Go to the blue Apple menu and scroll down to "About this Mac"
In the summary window that opens you will find the following information:
Mac OS X version (assuming you are running OS X)
    Processor speed.
    Memory
    Startup disk
The More Info button will take you to an in-depth overview of hardware, network set-up and installed software.
As far as transference is concerned, you can either transfer files via CD, DVD, external hard drive... or by networking the two computers.
Here's a link for an overview concerning Mac to PC connectivity:

    I hope the above helps.

    the rest to follow

It looks like you have multiple problems going on at once.
It takes about 10 seconds from startup to get to the point where it starts complaining:
Dec 22 08:30:54 Macintosh-3 kernel[0]: USBF: 12.187 AppleUSBHubPort: Port 2 of Hub at 0x5d000000 about to terminate a busy device (IOUSBCompositeDevice) after waiting 10 seconds
This is some USB device that's hanging. Try unplugging your everything on the USB line other than your keyboard and mouse and see what difference that makes..
    Dec 22 08:31:00 Macintosh-3 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.ciprico.bcapiservice): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
This is your RAID controller and it's clearly having issues. Without knowing your disk configuration it's impossible to predict what impact this will have, but over half the messages relate to the RAID controller. Where did you get the controller? What devices are connected to it?

  • New to the forums, not new to Mac. Need help on failing hard drive.

Hello, glad to have found this forum...I need all the help I can get. Let me explain what I have, what it's doing, what I want it to do, what I "think" I need to do.
    *What I have:*
733 G4 with superdrive, 512 MB SDRAM, 40 & 60 gig internal original hard drives
    *What it is doing:*
For about a year one of the drives (seems to be my 60g start-up drive) has made clicking/popping noises not unlike when you click/cluck your tongue. I've ignored it, foolishly, and gone about my business. Then I began having to click the mouse and punch keys when I start-up in order to get the drive to begin spinning, otherwise it would never kick in and I'd get the "?" face. Anyway, I have been living like that for many months until recently when my start-up drive only had about 500MB left of space, I burned some DVD's and freed up about 6 gig on the drive for some cushion the other day. Well, since doing that, when I start up now I get a spinning globe. I have to hold the option key down at boot and then select the drive manually and I'm back to being fine again.
*What I want it to do:*
I'm freaked out about losing data because I am a photographer and graphic designer, so I would die if I lost any files. I have been using one of my old iPods as a back up drive to dump data on and burning some DVD's too...but still, I have most of my life still on the drive. Here is what I am considering. I would like to get an external drive to move and continue to grow my massive files for my work and creativity. I'm thinking the G-Tech 320 Quad external would be a good fit. Now, moving back inside, my 60g start-up is telling me it's failing and to back up and replace before...well, you know. My 2nd internal drive is 40g and is strictly my iTunes library of MP3s.
How do I save myself and replace my start-up drive?
Do I buy the G-Tech first, move all my files over, then replace the internal, failing 60g? Can I start-up from the G-Tech? Should I/Can I make my 40g the temporary start-up, replace the failing 60g, and go from there? How should I do this and must I get the G-Tech now?
While on this same question, I am getting conflicting information regarding how much my 733 G4 will recognize as far as each drive size. What is the max size each drive can be? What is the max combined?
*What I think I should do:*
I think I should buy the G-Tech, move my life over there, then use the working 40g as my start-up, replace the failing 60g with the largest possible when possible, make the replacement internal the start-up again, use or replace the working/existing 40g as storage/back-up, live happily ever after.
    *And on a side note:*
I plan to drop two sticks of 512MB memory, this filling it up to it's max 1.5 gig of memory. Will this have a noticeable affect on my computer? If so, how?
Oh, and the reason I was opting for the Quad G-Tech is because can't I upgrade and add FW800 ports to my G4 rather easily?
Thank you for any time or effort you give me in helping me through this urgent matter. I had run out of places to go and people to ask before running across this forum.

First of all I cannot believe you have no backup strategy and only start to worry about it after problems arise. You're an accident waiting to happen. Before you consider anything make backups.
    Basic Backup
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
You can begin addressing the problems with your hard drive(s) after you get your stuff properly backed up. Once that's done get two larger drives for the computer and replace the small ones you now have. Your model should support hard drives up to 128 GBs in size. There is not specific limit on external drives so your external backup drive can be large enough to be partitioned into multiple volumes large enough to backup at least one of the internal drives (using the second internal drive as a backup for the first internal drive. This provides redundancy - an internal and an external backup.) You can then use the additional space on the external drive for your data files.
BTW, you risk catastrophic data loss by allowing the free space on your startup volume to drop below 3 GBs.

  • New Mac User Needs help opening Microsoft office 2007 files on a Mac!!!

I just got a used ibook G4. I had an old Pentium upgrade IBM before. I love my Mac, but I need my old school files form my IBM. I have OpenOffice.org 2.2 for Mac OS X 10.4.11 and I have a file converter program called X 11 that opens with a huge list of options for converting files, but it dose not say Microsoft offices 2007 it says the version numbers. I tryed the latest version and It wouldn't open in OpenOffice.org. Should I use Apple Script instead? I don't have Apple Works do I need it? I just want to look at the files. Why is there not a office viewer for Mac?

    You have Tiger. Tiger=10.4.x; Panther=10.3.x; Leopard=10.5.x.
If you are trying with OpenOffice 2.2, it might be worth updating. I have version 2.4, which is the latest. Since 2.4 fixes a security issue, you should update if you plan to use the application anyway.
NeoOffice, as a previous poster pointed out, should be able to open Office 2007 documents.
See the discussion at http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4542 for the main OpenOffice thread discussing this issue. It discusses the ODF converter at sourceforge which NeoOffice uses to open Office 2007 documents. Apparently, you can use it with regular OpenOffice, too, but if 2.4 doesn't come with it (and maybe it does - I haven't checked), it might be easier to use NeoOffice for now.
X11 is not a file converter, by the way. It is the traditional unix GUI. Apple provides a version of this for OS X which enables you to run applications which haven't been ported to the native OS X environment. OpenOffice for Mac OS X uses X11 as do some other applications, such as GIMP, which you may have heard of/used. NeoOffice is a version of OpenOffice ported to the native OS X environment (i.e. it doesn't have to use X11). I haven't used it in a long time - I always use OpenOffice on X11 - but it is supposed to be very good now and should seem very familiar if you're used to OpenOffice. If you can't get OpenOffice to work with your files, you should definitely try NeoOffice before buying MS Office - unless, of course, you especially want to send MS a few hundred of your preferred currency.
The other thing you can try, if you've still got Office on your IBM machine is converting the files there by opening them and choosing "save as...". That should allow you to select an earlier version of Word/Excel/... which OpenOffice should have fewer problems with. Since you may lose formatting this way, try the other options first. (Also, if you have a lot of files, this option will be very annoying to implement.)
I do not think AppleWorks is likely to help. (I'm not sure if AppleWorks is even still available... somebody?) There are some suggestions Pages might help, but I would personally try the other solutions first. (On the other hand, I have a very old version of Pages.)
AppleScript is almost certainly not what you want. It has nothing to do with AppleWorks. It is a scripting language.
    Good luck,
    cfr

  • Mac user needs HELP!

I see that someone else had a similar problem, but never
really got a resolution. I need to install Authoware for some
online classes that I am taking. I am working on a Mac in OS X. I
have downloaded the appropriate version of Authorware, "Unstuffed"
it and tried to install the program. My computer then runs through
what seems like an installation process, says that the installation
was successful and that the program was installed on my hardrive.
However, the program did not install. I have searched my entire
computer for the application, and it just isn't there! This is
    driving me CRAZY! Please help.
    Thanks,
    Holly

I hadn't done this in a while, so tried it.
Went to Adobe's site with Firefox on the Mac and downloaded
    the A'ware
Web Player. Adobe's site says it works with IE, Safari, and
    Netscape.
I let Stuffit open the file as the default suggested on
    download.
That put the 'Authorware 7 complete install' file on the
    desktop.
I ran that and it supposedly installed the player. I would
    assume it put
it in the plugins folder for all browsers.
I ran Firefox on the Mac and typed 'about:plugins' into the
    URL field.
That showed the Authorware Web Player as installed.
Then I ran Safari and selected 'Help' > 'Installed
    Plug-ins' and the
resulting browser page also showed the web player as
    installed for that
    browser.
So both web browsers I use on the Mac should both have the
    player
    installed now.
So I went to our LMS and opened a piece that had NOT
    specifically been
created with the Mac in mind. It opened, though it did break
    pretty
quickly due to Windows-specific items....but but opened just
    fine.
What browser are you using? Can you determine if the plugin
    is properly
installed? What's the URL or provider for the course you're
    taking?

  • Gcc4.5, lapack/blas libraries, fink/mac ports  - need help

I have been compiling a model for my research on our lab's Linux cluster, and want to switch to running in on my macbook (osx 10.5.8). I have to set user-specified fc and cc overrides, flags for lapack and blas libraries, and env. variables for mpi and netcdf libraries.
I just installed xcode; a colleague suggested I install the latest gcc 4.5 (w/ gfortran) using fink, but I have been reading on Apple's Developer Forum's that packaging / porting managers like fink can cause problems.... This is all very new ground for me, so I don't even know whether I can access unix-based lapack and blas libraries w/o fink or mac ports. I should probably buy a leopard bible...
if i ultimately have to have either fink or mac ports to link lapack and blas libraries, any suggestions on which direction to go?

Safe, yes - but not necessarily without problems.
    Go for it.
    Not so fast
    Let's review:

It would probably be easier if you had 10.6.2. Any open-source libraries that Apple includes are going always going to be a bit older.
a colleague suggested I install the latest gcc 4.5 (w/ gfortran) using fink
MacOS X isn't like Linux. You don't want to do what a typical Linux user might do and just grab the latest of everything and let your package manager update all the dependencies automatically. It may work fine. I will definitely give you a set of duplicate libraries and configure an environment that might never have been tried on Mac before. If your results are incorrect, you can't blame Apple.
I don't even know whether I can access unix-based lapack and blas libraries w/o fink or mac ports. I should probably buy a leopard bible...
I don't know if the Leopard Bible will help very much. Developer questions are pretty specific. This is a good place to start. The Apple Mailing Lists are another good resources. Apple also just dramatically lowered the price of their Mac developer program to $99. It comes with two free tech support instances per year.
Also, and this is the important part, both lapack and blas libraries ship with the OS. They are already on your machine. There is no need to get anything from Fink or MacPorts. I don't know much about those libraries, but the versions that come with MacOS X may be optimized by Apple. See this link for more information.
if i ultimately have to have either fink or mac ports to link lapack and blas libraries, any suggestions on which direction to go?
That is an easy one. http://www.finkproject.org/ or http://www.macports.org/
I would encourage you to try to use what Apple ships with the OS before trying to replace it. That way, if there are bugs, Apple will look into it. If you use some 3rd party, Apple won't care - even if they are the same Apple bugs. Plus, you could then more easily develop with Xcode because you wouldn't have to hack up everything to use the fink/macports environment.
