Mac email quits

A few days ago our power went out and since then a few things have gone haywire on my older iMac (10.4.8). I will deal with the problem that is most important and attack the others later. My email quits as soon as it starts to download a message. My other computers are still fine , so I can still look at my mail, but my iMac (primary computer) is virtually useless when it comes to email. I checked the forums and have done the following: restarted my computer (of course), trashed the messagesorting.plist, trashed the preferences, reinstalled mail from original disc, called my isp and asked them to remove all messages on the server in case the culprit was hiding there. I am at a loss. I can't imagine there is much more to do. I look forward to any help you can provide. PS I don't know if this will help, but when I looked at the messages that did download before it quit, every message was duplicated about nine times. Is this a clue? Thanks, Rick

MessageSorting.plist was used by Mail 1.x. Mail 2.x uses MessageRules.plist instead.

Bad idea. Did you also reinstall the corresponding Combo Update afterwards to bring Mail back in sync with the rest of the system?
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:

After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with your computer:

Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.
The above may or may not solve the problem, but will allow us to at least troubleshoot it properly. Post back with your observations when done.

Dot mac email can't connect to server...

hey all.
So i have an old .mac email as my main email address for work. I've obviously had it for a long time.
I want to update to iCloud, but my older G5 Power PC is not compatible, and I'm not quite ready to buy a new computer, financially.
And so, my Mac Mail on my G5 still works with my .mac email just fine.
Yet, in the last month or so, on my android phone, it constantly tells me that it cant connect to the server, but yet, it does receive email, but only once every 5-6 hours. It used to work fine till about a month ago.
Is this because of the switch to iCloud?
Being that my .mac has been my main email for work, and I'm constantly on the go, and need my email on my phone, and in a timely fashion, is my only solution to buy an iPhone?

It also works fine on iCloud, (when i use a computer that is new enough to use iCloud).

Mac mail quit working. Message; you can not use this mail (4.3) with your OSX (10.7.4). I've ran the software update and still no mail.

iCloud handles only its own email. On a Mac, or a PC, or an iOS device you can add other email accounts to the email application - this is quite independent of iCloud.
On the iCloud website you cannot access other email accounts. However, you can usually set up forwarding from other accounts to the iCloud address, which would enable you to read the messages on the iCloud website (there's no point at all in doing this from the point of view of a Mac etc.)mbut you can't send using iCloud's outgoing server using the other account's email address as the 'From' address - only the iCloud address can be used - which severely limits the e=method's usefulness.

When i got my macbook which was back at the end of November 2007 i signed up automatically for the mac.email thing that comes with mac which was working fine, but all of a sudden in about february begining sometime it stopped working; it said the ssl connection was cut off or something like that and ever since my email has stopped working i cant communicate with people properly. I know my father has some problems with our internet provider because they dont allow streaming but it worked before and quit now because it said that something is faking mac.com users or something like that. Now all of a sudden since about 2 weeks ago my ichat stopped working because there is a general error and cannot sign in. I was told i have to pay to use mac.email but my friends dont and when i wanted to sign up to pay it costs $99 a year, and i dont know whether im doing the right thing. If someone by any chance understands me, please help me out ASAP.

You can find all about it and purchase it from this link. If you decide to not purchase the subscription ($99/yr) then it should be deactivated or removed. I can't help you with that as I have never signed up for .Mac.

My computer has been infected by a Trojan Horse. It has taken over my Mac email account and began sending out malicious emails to everyone in my address book. I cleared out my MAC address book and began using my AOL email account. It took a few days and then my AOL email account was infected and has now been send out malicious email to all my contacts for over a month. It has also infected my iPhone--I am no longer able to send or receive emails on my iPhone. Also, once the Trojan Horse began using my AOL email it completely blocked me from using my MAC account by sending never ending popups asking for my email password to access my MAC email account, but it never accepts my pass word. The TH has also slowed down everything on my computer. It's like I am working on an old PC with dial up connection instead of the high speed digital connection that I have. The little color wheel spins constantly as I wait for sometimes over a minute for a page to pull up. If it pulls up at all. I have tried to use the 2 disks that came with my computer to completely remove everything on my computer and then reinstall all the programs, but I am not allowed to sweep my computer clean. I thought maybe my disks that came with my computer were defective so I called Apple and they sent me 2 new disks. I am not able able to clear my computer with the 2 new disks either. I have done this before successfully so it's not something new to me. I do remember when I believe my computer became infected: I had googled an unusual sewing term, and I was opening what appeared to be legitimate sites, when all of a sudden a pop up appeared that said that my computer had been infected. I immediately shut my computer off, but it was too late. I downloaded a virus program for Mac, and it has never found a virus or problem at all. I think it is part of this Trojan Horse, but I am unable to delete it from my computer. It refuses to uninstall. The Mac Trojan Horse is real and it is terrible. If anyone has any suggestions for me I would be very appreciative,

Install ClamXav and run a scan with that. It should pick up any trojans.

Cannot send emails from mac email address

Over the past 24hrs I am unable to send emails from my ibook and sporadically from my iphone. Please advice what the settings should be for SMTP and port. I think this might be the problem but I am unsure. I have a mac email address. I can send emails from my icloud account. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

This post by vanessa seems to have gelped many that could not send...
Just set up my macmail with the help of the BT guys after a year of struggling! Hopefully this could work for others for whom the emails will receive but NOT send....
Set up your 3rd party domain names via the mail relay system and confirmed via BT. Then try these settings.....
In your @btconnect.com email set its up using these:
incoming mail server: pop3.btconnect.com
username: the bt email
password: the bt email password you supplied
outgoing mail: we'll come to this!
on the drop down box next to Outgong mail server (SMTP) select 'edit SMTP server list'
press '+' button and add these details....
In the Account information tab:
Description: mail.btconnect.com
Server Name: mail.btconnect.com
In the advanced tab:
Select 'Use default ports'
Authentication: Password
username: the bt email
password: the bt email password you supplied
NOW The next bit, the 'second' server....
press '+' fro a new server add these details....
In the Account information tab:
Description: second server (or any name you want)
Server Name: mail.btconnect.com
In the advanced tab:
Select 'Use default ports'
Authentication: NONE!
Now on all your email addresses back in the accounts section, set the SMTP server to 'second server' (or whater you hae called it) NOT mail.btconnect.com and select Use only this server.

How do i use my .mac email with iCloud?

I had a .mac account with mobile me which i switched over to iCloud when prompted. I just receently bought a brand new iMac and want to use my .mac email in the apple Mail program but it's not working. I'm assuming the "type" of email is iCloud. Any suggestions on how to get it up and running?

Don't try to set it up in the Mail program. Go to System Preferences>iCloud and sign in with your @me.com email address. Check Mail in the checklist there, and any other data types you want to sync. Mail will be set up automatically and both the @me.com and @mac.com versions of your address should work.

How do I upload an 'On my Mac' email archive in Mail to an 'On my computer' folder in Outlook for Mac??

I've installed Office for Mac with Outlook and want to import an archive of 'On my Mac' emails from Mail to a new folder created in Outlook's 'On my computer' section.
When I recently upgraded to Mavericks, I was able to import this archive back in from a system backup I'd made beforehand. I thought I would be able to do the same again now, but Outlook's import function won't play ball, not even after I have led it to the 'Mailboxes' folder of MBOX data that I've saved onto my desktop. Outlook's 'import' button remains greyed out and unresponsive, even after I've opened the 'Mailboxes' folder to expose the MBOX data.
I now know I am not alone in being unable to complete this task by the only method suggested in Outlook's 'Help' that is open to me - ie, to "import messages in MBOX format". I got nowhere at all trying the alternative, to "Import Apple Mail messages", where, after clicking 'File / Import', the options encountered bore little resemblance to those described in 'Help' - eg, to import, specifically, "Entourage information from an archive or earlier version" rather than the more general "Information from another application", whilst there was subsequently no mention whatsoever of "Apple Mail" after clicking "the right arrow to continue".
I've since learned from trawling internet forums that Apple and Microsoft MBOX folders are not the same, which is presumably at the heart of this. There are also various solutions proffered, involving either uploading the archive over an IMAP connection (which I do have, to Gmail) to a shared email account, or using proprietary software that either converts email data from Mail to Outlook friendly or enables it to be uploaded from one to the other. However, none of the simpler solutions are relevant (they tend to be restricted to particular mail clients, etc) whilst the others require programming familiarity and skills that I don't possess.
It's hard to believe that Microsoft could produce this suite expressly for Macs and, in the case of the Outlook component, implicitly to replace its Mac counterparts, yet for it to be incapable of doing so in the crucial, basic area of importing pre-existing Mac email data.
Whilst I have taken this up with Microsoft, I'm just hoping there might be someone out there in the Mac community who might know the answer . . .

Connect in recovery mode and restore, you'll get the option to rest the passcode during this process:

If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.

Well, seems I managed to unscrew this...I deleted my iCloud mail account and reinstalled it on my phone. That got rid of the duplicate .me/.mac email accounts.

Can't use Find My Friends on iPhone due to Apple ID not being verified. Can't do this as I can't access my .mac email any longer and I can not change the primary e-mail address for my Apple ID!

So my options are:
Create a new Apple ID, use that and lose all the apps I've purhcased with it (a fairly substantial amount)
Somehow Migrate these purchases over to a new Apple ID
Apple let me change the primary ID for the account
Anyone else ran into this before?
I've tried accessing the mail through a mail application using the correct server information, and trying both the old 6 character password and the one I had to change it too after they updated the security guidelines - neither work.
Help would be greatly appreciated as I can see more services down the line not working without the address being verified!

To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iDevice, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use. When you do this you may find that the password for your old ID isn't accepted. If this should happen, and if your old ID is an earlier version of your current ID, you need to temporarily recreate your old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change. Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address. You should not need to verify the old email address. You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll. When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was. Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.
