Mac falls asleep and won't wake up

I need help fast diagnosing my Mac Problem!
Out of nowhere yesterday my machine started to automatically shut down and go into sleep mode without me touching anything or making any settings changes. The screen goes blank. The hard drive winds down but comes back to life once I click my mouse. This is now happening every few seconds and I cannot even run diagnostics before it shuts down.
It's a PowerMac G4 (Quicksilver with 5 hole front). About a month ago I upgraded to OSX Tiger 4.7 and was running fine with no problems.
I check energy saver and made sure it was set to 'never' for the sleep selection. I disabled my hot corners but it still keeps doing it.
I even unplugged the system and vaccumed out the dust from the fan grates thinking it was overheating and powering down as to protect from overload but still no go.
I don't know if this is software or hardware related issue or if I picked up a virus. I've never seen or heard of this problem before and can't find any info on it.
If anybody has any information or suggestions please respond here or email me at [email protected]

Try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption as Archeeum so helpfully suggested (if it stays running long enough!). The link will show you how.
Cheers!

  • Display falls asleep and won't wake when connected to new Haswell MBP

For over a year now I've used my 2007 Macbook Pro and my 2004 20in Cinema display together. I woud dock my macbook pro and just use my cinema display as my main display.
I attempted to do this with my brand new macbook pro today. Purchased a Mini Display port to DVI adaptor and I can get the display to appear on my the 20in Cinema Display, but when I close my laptop it falls asleep and so does the monitor. I've been able to wake it up for about 10 seconds but then it'll fall asleep again and I can't wake it up any longer.
Has anyone had a similar issue like this and is there a solution out there?

    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I am sorry to hear that your HP Officejet 8620 will not wake up after falling asleep, but I am happy to look into this for you!
How is the printer connected? Wireless, Ethernet, or USB?
In the meantime, please try the following:
Make sure the printer's power cable is pluged directly into the wall outlet, and not a surge protector. Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector. This applies to Inkjet printers as well.

No one was home and I'm really curious how it woke itself. The stuff about USB and bluetooth in this console stuff has me curious also. I do not have anything set to wake it up in energy saver.
Then, the funny thing is, when I got home it was asleep and I had to shut it down because it wouldn't wake up.
Does any one have an answer to all this?
    Thanks,
    Bill

I have this happening on my MacBook as well. It never did this before upgrading to 10.5. The bad thing is it has done this while in my laptop sleeve in my backpack, generating a ton of heat and kind of roasting itself.
Anyone have any ideas? My console looks very similar to the log Bill posted above, with the same "USB caused wake event" line. I may have to drop back to 10.4 just to make sure my machine doesn't cook itself.

  • Won't fall asleep, but won't wake either

my parents have a powermac g4 with dual 1.25 processors, 2 gigs of ram, and tiger 10.3.9. recently it has developed a glitch when trying to put the computer asleep. when we try to put it asleep, the computer screen goes black. however, all the fans continue to run in the tower. moving the mouse which used to bring the computer back to life does nothing. there is no way to get the screen to come back to life. turning the power switch on and off on the lcd screen brings up a no input signal message. the only thing i can do when the computer is in this unresponsive mode is to hold the power switch and turn it off manually.
i have repaired disk permissions on the hard drive using disk utility. other than that i don't know what to do. other than this the computer has been working great.
we have just bought leopard for our powermac. i want to upgrade but i would like to fix this problem. if anyone has an recommendations to fix this problem i would appreciate it. also if anyone has any recommendations i should do before i upgrade i would appreciate it. i have backed up most of what we would want in case something went wrong. i'm just curious if there are things i should check or do to make sure the upgrade will go well.
    thanks for the help.

I would try replacing the PRAM battery. There is old, but still relevant information here: http://www.academ.com/info/macintosh/
The usual signal of a low battery is incorrect date and time, but you can have a low battery that causes weird behaviour without seeing the date and time symptoms.

Ops I replied to myself in error.....
    Tom:
I performed the steps indicated but this morning when I clicked the mouse and hit the space key and clicked the track pad again as before nothing happens.
I hold the power button for a few seconds and the screen fills as if the computer was normally awakened but it is locked up.
Then I have to shut it down with the power button  and then power it up as a reboot.
Not good...SMC reset didn't work....Throughout the day yesterday I put the computer to sleep and woke it up normally.  It seems to be a overnight problem.
Am I going to have to shut it down everynight?

  • Mac falls asleep while ordering Photobook

I use an iMac G4 with the latest OS and iPhoto.
When ordering photobooks, I experience my mac falling asleep (i.e. 'lighthouse mode'). My internet connection is wireless, and I know the Mac sometimes looses the connection with my airport; but finds it back my itself. iPhoto can handle this; it just stalls sending, and continues automatically.
The mac itself however falls asleep after 1h no activitiy; but iPhoto running and having network activity doesn't mean 'now activity'.
I can overcome the problem by switching of sleeping in energysaving options; but it's anoying.
I also experience it sometimes with programs like Realplayer.
Does anyone know how mac defines 'activity'; and how I can overcome this issue?

    Martijn567:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't know how Apple defines "activity" but I know that you have to turn of the sleep option when you're encoding and/or burning iDVD projects to disk image or directly to disk. So it seems to be a system wide issue for operations that rely primarily only on CPU work. It's just the nature of the beast.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Falling asleep and waking up to iPhone (alarm volume question)

I would like to both fall asleep and wake up to music on my iPhone. I know hot to do sleep the iPhone after a certain amount of time using the timer, but I like the volume way down so I can barely hear the music. The problem is that for my alarm in the morning, I need the music very loud. Is there some way to have the music soft when I am falling asleep and automatically get louder for my alarm in the morning? I'm not too hopeful on this, but maybe someone can help.
    Thanks,
    Colin

I believe your alarm tone volume is the same as your ringtone volume and has nothing to do with your music volume. You are not presently able to wake up to music.

  • Does anyone know what to do when a apple mac book pro screen won't wake up from sleep?

Try this, which is located in your macbook pros user manual.

  • Macbook pro goes into sleep mode after few minutes and won't wake up

Since yesterday my MB pro suddenly goes in sleep mode while working and won't wake up. After reset the MB Pro goes into Sleepmode befor I get the log in screen. After resettin SMC and PRAM I can log in but after a few minutes, againg deep sleep. I'ts not a software isue I think because when I use my MB Pro's harddrive by firewire as the startup disk on an other macbook it works fine. anyone knows about this problem?

It sounds obvious but are you sure your power adapter is ok and the battery is charged. The behaviour sounds a lot like low battery sleep.
Press the check button on your battery pack - do you get plenty of lights?

  • MacBook screen goes gray and won't wake up from sleep - 10.6.2

We have a MacBook Alum running 10.6.2 with 4gb ram.
We recently upgraded to 10.6.2 from Leopard and this issue started to happen.
It seems that as the MacBook goes to sleep or goes to the screensaver mode, the screen goes gray and won't wake up from sleep or screensaver mode without a hard reboot.
Is Apple aware of this issue? It did not happen with the previous version of Leopard. This issue arrived when we upgraded to Snow Leopard. Other than the sleep issue, SL is rock solid. Kudos to Apple for producing a great OS!

    Hi GrooveDaddy,
Have you contacted AppleCare via telephone to make them aware of this issue? It definitely doesn't sound like normal behavior. What sort of troubleshooting have you done so far on the issue? What sort of settings do you have on your screen saver? Password protected? Custom iPhoto slideshow?
What if you manually sleep the machine by closing the lid or engaging it via software (via the Apple menu) does the screen have the issue in both scenarios?

My Macbook pro, (late 2010) sometimes will sleep and won't wake up. then the sleep light flashes. What's the problem

Hi I've been following this thread (along with a different one on the same topic). I've been having the same problem with my ibook. I can add that I have no problem with startup. It's just that the screen "goes to sleep" unexpectedly and may operate normally for a few minutes or a few hours at most. Opening and closing the lid or restarting seems to cause it to awaken but then usually for just a few seconds or minutes. If it is connected to another video display that display continues functioning fine even though the computer screen is blank. In addition the desktop is there and visible faintly or if totally blank can be backlit through the apple logo and can be read. I've had my logic board replaced twice under the extended warranty and assumed it was that but now I'm thinking of the reed switch. Apple refuses to consider any further work under warranty as the last repair was in Jan, 06 and they claim only a 90 parts warranty and the machine is from 03. Any thoughts before I cut the wires? I have reset the pmu, run cocktail and disk utility. Other than the sleep issue the machine works fine. thanks Ronda or anyone else who has any ideas... Dave

  • Display Turns Black and Won't Wake Up Unless I Power Cycle the Mac mini

Even when I disable all the power settings on my Mac mini, after a day or 2 at max my Mac mini's display will go black and stay that way. Whether I connect to it using VNC Screen Sharing, or connect a monitor directly to it, I can't get the screen back on unless I either power cycle the computer, or otherwise SSH into it via the terminal on my MacBook and force it to log off that way. Any suggestions? Does this sound like a hardware problem, setting, or software problem? I notice that it happens most frequently when the CPU is being worked intensively, like if I'm downloading a lot of files with Vuze or otherwise doing heavy video conversions with iSkysoft iMedia Converter. I heard that maybe the Mac mini is overheating, but it's not stacked and lately I've tried moving it to several different locations but still the problem persists. I also notice that usually when I SSH into it via the terminal while the problems occur that my CPU usage will be way lower than it should be, since it might have happened during the onset of a long/heavy video conversion process. I have a Core 2 Duo, 2.2 GHz Processor with 4 GB of RAM and about 140 GB of available storage. What do you all think I should do?

couple of things you should try:
boot up in _*safe mode*_, the restart normally
try _*resetting the System Management Controller SMC*_
try _*resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM*_
if none of the above makes any difference, run _*Apple Hardware Test*_ from the install DVD that came with your Mac to see if it reports hardware problems.

  • Airdisk falling asleep and not waking up

what i thought might be a partitioning error/issue might be another thing altogether... let's start from the top. lots of random details follow, but something might be the kicker.
i have an older AEBS (non-dual-band, non-giga-bit, circa 2007) in another room (garage -- with all of the other panels, switches, etc.) that distributes a signal to the whole house -- specifically to two airport express base stations (delivering music, printer sharing, etc.). the AEBS is sending out a G/N signal (for iphones, network cameras, etc.) and one of the expresses is sending out an N-only (for my macbook).
the purpose of the AEBS is three-fold. (1) to provide wireless connectivity (2) to serve as a conduit to a backup airdsk for (a) general computer/home theater backups and (b) a consistent repository for a network (security) camera feed fed through "security spy" via a mac mini (home theater hub) which is hard-wired to the network via whole-house ethernet (belkin hub in the garage ties it all together). the camera itself is wireless (G-speed).
over the past few weeks, i've been getting very poor throughput on the wireless network -- speed bumps back up (from <1bps to >20mbps) when plugged into the ethernet network (as viewed through speakeasy's speedtest).
ok. the issue is that the new 2TB lacie harddrive is going to "sleep" and not waking up. it works fine for about 1/2 hour after hookup or "hard" wake-up (restart AEBS/drive).
previously (as few as 5 weeks ago, i had a smaller lacie drive (1TB) serving the same function flawlessly.
so... is this new airdisk issue due to:
-- the AEBS not liking the 2TB size?
-- the AEBS giving signs of failure (esp. with the network issues noted above)
-- is the new lacie drive either (a) a DOA-failure or (b) doing its job by falling asleep (if so, it'd be a new 1TB>>2TB feature)...
    -- user error
    -- something completely random...
thanks for any wisdom you can lend...

I have pretty much the same setup with the same model AEBS and I get the same problem with a 2TB Western Digital drive plugged in. I solved this problem a month ago by updating my system to Snow leopard and updating firmware to the base station and rebuilding pretty much the whole network. But it came back this weekend. Is driving me crazy!
(Side note: I also use that drive as a wireless Time Machine backup but can only get it to work reliably with my wife's Macbook not my own- which actually worked for a weekend but then decided that was enough.)
