Mac file opened on a PC

Are there any issues opening a mac file on a PC?

Yhanks for you response.
Which bring up another question. If they give me their fonts (from a mac) can those font files be loaded onto a pc?
Thanks

  • Office for the Mac - file open slowness, freeze, or crash

When I select the File - Open window, any of the Office programs take a few minutes to display all of my files in the Documents folder. When they are finally displayed, any attempt to scroll through the list or go to a specific file results in the Mac's spinning wheel being displayed. Quite often, nothing happens after the wheel stops spinning. Sometimes, it just continues to spin. Consequently, it is almost impossible to use the File - Open window in Office to select a file to open. The only way I can do so is to use Finder to display my files in the Documents folder and then selecting them in that program's File - Open window.
When the wheel is spinning, Force Quit says that the specific Office program being used is "not responding." Usually, I use Force Quit to close down the Office program if it has frozen, crashed, or been slow using the File Open window.
I spent an hour yesterday with Microsoft Support on the problem. The conclusion of the tech was that I had too many files in my Documents folder. I pointed out that other programs such as FileMaker Pro didn't have this problem. The tech's response was that Office has to scan the entire Documents folder every time the File Open window is opened, but that FileMaker Pro stores a list of the last files in the Documents folder and doesn't rebuild the list every time.
I am skeptical of this "answer." The problem didn't exist until a few months ago.
My computer is a MacBook Pro 2.3gHz with 16 GB of RAM and a 750GB hard drive which has about 500GB free. This is a fairly fast machine with a Geekspeed of 10688. I was running the latest Mac OS Yosemite 10.10.1. The problem first surfaced with Office for the Mac 2008 about 3-4 months ago running Mac OS 10.10.1. I installed Office 365 yesterday, and and Mac OS Yosemite 10.10.2 today, and nothing changed.
The only solution that I know of is to take a lot of time to segregate my files in the Documents folder into more subfolders (I already have quite a few). That I am loath to do, because the solution doesn't work very well. It takes about a minute to select a subfolder in the File Open window, and then about another 30 seconds before Office allows me to scroll through a relatively small number of files (e.g., 100 files) in the subfolder.
When this question was posted to the Microsoft Community, I was directed to an article talking about problems with Office and Mac OS. None of the solutions worked, probably because the article considered only Office X and Office 2004 for the Mac and OS 10.2 and 10.3.
    Help, please!

    1) Verify that Office is fully updated. v14.4.7
    2) I suggest you run Font Book and vailidate your Fonts. Microsoft installs duplicate fonts and after you clean up your fonts, this has often fixed odd issues with Office.
Office 2011 Duplicate Fonts to Delete
    3) Delete the com.apple.LaunchServices file in your User's Library/Preferences folder. Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar and test. More info
    If this fails to fix....
Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.
Put a few test files in the Shared folder. Data in the Shared folder can be accessed by another User. When you "Switch Users", you can access the files in the shared folder. After you log into the new test User, drag from Shared (it actually copies). Put the test files in Documents.
Open Word. It won’t be in the Dock in the new User. Go to Applications to open.
Do you still see the issue?
If yes, you can eliminate the number of files in your Documents folder.
If no, then you might want to do a clean up in Documents.
*Remember to drag files back from Shared when you log into your main User.

  • Office files opened from network drive appear to be blank for Mac Users

    Hi all,
We've got five macs in our office running 10.9 with Office 2011, and we have a file server running 10.8 which stores all of our documents.
More often than not, when one of the macs opens a DOC or DOCX from the file server, the file opens up blank.
There aren't invisible fonts, doing a Select All and changing to black doesn't help.
The files appear to be fine when opened in Finder, or with LibreOffice (which my colleagues don't want to use!)
The files open correctly when the files are moved to the local hard drive and opened from there.
The files also open fine via the network on a Windows 8.1 PC with Office 2007.
Has anyone else had this problem, and got a workaround? I've been looking at this for a while but not found anything as of yet.
Appreciate any assistance you can give. :)
    Kind Regards,

  • Downloadable .tiff files open in quicktime, not as an image file: using mac

    I am using a Mac 10.6.3 and
    Ffirefox ver: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; en-US; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100115 Firefox/3.6
downloadable .tiff files open in firefox quicktime, not as image files, nor do they let me choose how to download or where to save or as what type of file.

    Hello andrea,
You can tell Firefox to ask you where to store your download files by changing the Firefox "Preferences". You can get the instructions on how to do it in this article: [[Downloads window]].
I would advise you to download tiff files as tiff files only otherwise they may become unviewable.
Now, to open your tiff files as images, you can change the settings on your Mac computer as follows:
#Select the tiff image that you downloaded.
#Right click on it and select "Get info"
#A windows will pop up. In this window, select the "Open with" item. Under this item, select "Preview" or any other image viewer application that you want to use.
#Next, click on the "Change All.." button. Click "Continue" in the message that is shown.
That's all. Now, your tiff files will open as images in the application that you just selected
Hope this solves your problem !

  • Ai file opening by default as PDF and not w/AI CS3/4 on MAC client

We have recently moved our central file shares of *.*ai files from a windows file server to an EMC Celerra file server CIFS share. After the migration multiple MAC users have reported that some (but not all) *.* ai files on the share open up by default as a PDF file instead of opening up with Adobe Illustrator CS3/4.
If the user either right clicks - and selects to explicitly open with AI or if mac mouse, control-click and select AI - then the .ai file in question opens properly in CS3 and CS4. However when we double click, the file still opens up in preview as a PDF.
Is this something we need to change/update on the MAC OS side so that default will be AI? change/update onthe Adobe CS side? Or is this a problem related to the *.*ai files being shared on a EMC Celerra share. Again not all the *.*ai files have this issue - which has created even more questions...
Any info or suggestions would be deeply appreciated....
    Thank you
    Dave

I don't know anything about the EMC Cellera share, but I would say that this is a change on the OS side. Apple likes to think that Preview is the natural tool for viewing any PDF content, so Preview is now the default PDF viewer on Mac. You'll need to go to each of the Macs, do a Get Info and set Open With: Illustrator and Change All.
The reason this is happening on some of the .ai files and not others is that some of them do not contain PDF content (they were saved with PDF Compatibility unchecked.) To make sure that all files open with Illustrator do the Change All step on at least on file that does not have PDF content as well as one that does.
When Apple made this change in the OS, we asked them, for a way to set the default app programatically so that we could do it as part of the install process, but that didn't happen.

  • File created on Mac wont open on PC

    The Problem:
I created a catalog file in InDesign CS6 (Before CC) on a Mac (See machine info below) and my Manager who works with a PC (Windows 7) can not open my file. The problem is that the file will only open when certain pictures are not linked. Whenever I add certain product image photos to the InDesign File she gets the error message below. When these product photos are embeded the file does not open. But it's only certain files.
Then I have to start over with a copy of the file thats missing the picture files in question then it opens on a PC.
The File is never open in another application. I close indesign all together when my manager tries to access the file in question.  And I have never installed any plug-ins. I dont know how the "InDesign can't support this file" when it's an .indd
    My Machine info:
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
Processor  2.7 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    What I've Tried:
    - Open the mac files as they are.
    - Resave the mac files as old indesign format and open them on PC
    - Export from mac as IDML files and open those files on the pc.
    - Open the file on the pc as a "copy"
    - Use adobe extension manager to remove all third party plug-ins
    - Renamed Image files
    - Created new files of images in question, (in .Tiff and .PSD)
And none of those have resolved the issue.
    Questions:
Can Memory/Hardware play a part in getting this error message? (My Manager uses a machine thats at least 5 years old)
Can using PSD files as links in an InDesign file create errors like this? (Many of the files we link are PSD files)
Can this be an issue of having the file stored on an external network drive? (The file is stored on a network external drive)

That error message typically means the file is still open (or ID thinks it is because there's still a .idlk file in the folder), or the file extension has been changed to .indd on a file that is not actually an InDesign document.
It seems remotely possible that you'd get it with a linked .indd file from CC opeing in CS6, but you wouldn't have been able to place a CC .indd file in CS6 originally, which means you would only see this scenario when opening a .idml file from CC.

  • InDesign CS4 Files Open as Read-Only (Mac)

Having a problem where InDesign CS4 files sometimes open as read-only versions. This happens when opened by double-clicking through Finder, force opening by dragging the file over the ID icon in the Dock, or when opened through ID (file > open). If it's relevant, the ID file contains links to InCopy files that have been made using the Assignments Panel. System is Mac OS X 10.6.2. Any help &/or insight is greatly appreciated!

I got a similar kind of problem / error trying to migrate an InDesign Server CS4 solution to another server with InDesign Server CS5.
    Windows 2008 server.
I'll describe it, just in case it might give any clues.
Calling an InDesign server "open" script, trying to open an InDesign document, using a network path - although the file is on the same server - resulted in an error message:
System.Exception: 3598: Error from InDesign. Cannot save the document. No destination file supplied.
In the script there is a line, telling Indesign Server to call the save method, if the document is modified, which can be the case after opening a document from another environment, converting to CS5, and links that need relinking and other stuff that either InDesign takes care of, or that the script does.
No lock file ( .idlk ) was created on the server, but until I restarted the InDesign server instance, the file was opened as read-only when I opened it on my own computer (from the same network path on the server). I could then not save it from my own computer (the "Save As" dialogue appeared when I selected "Save" in the File menu).
After restarting the InDesign Service, the file was no longer locked (restarting the sevice automatically clears all open threads to the documents), and I could use and save the file without trouble, from my own computer.
Changing from Local Service to Administrator for running the InDesign service on the server, made the document open. Setting full permissions to the "Local Service" account, on the network share in question, also works, and that's the way I left it.
So my problem had to do with permissions on the network share. Since the service account was not allowed to do certain things, such as "modify" files... something went wrong.
Probably no lock file could be written either, due to permissions... then the open document and locking was handled by the operating system only(?), keeping the document read-only, and reporting other messages than the expected ones. It somehow seems that the document was neither open nor closed on the server (since InDesign Server has no user interface, I can only report what my method calls "saw").
Now - with the permissions of the service account changed - trying to open the document on my computer I get the correct message: "Cannot open the document [...]. You may not have permission or the document may be open already."
(When it was opened in a faulty state - with insufficient permissions - on the server, I could still open it on my computer, but as read-only, due to the missing lock file.)

    (1) Messages typed in uppercase are boring but messages forgetting the required uppercased characters are boring too !
    (2) Is it so difficult to take care of the true products names ?
Word:mac files will not open by an application which doesn't exists !
This said, you are welcome on the forum
iWork's Pages will be able to open a lot of Word:mac files but there will be some differences.
I don't know your real needs so I can't guess if they are acceptable or not.
also, will i have access to the page, ie make changes, or will it be read only??
Pages will be able to edit the files which it will open.
When the edit task will be done, you will have the ability
    - to save the edited document as a Pages document
    - to export the edited document as a Word file.
The best thing to do is to use the FREE 30 days trial version to decide if it fit your needs or if it doesn't.
After all, with a bit of luck, on july the 15th we will know if a new version is delivered.
