Mac Freezes at Grey Screen.

So yesterday my iMac froze while using iTunes. I had to manually power it off. I turned it on again and it booted fine. I tried iTunes again and shortly after that it froze again. I manually shut it down again. I tried to turn it on once again and it won't load the desktop. It just stays at the grey screen with the apple and spinning thing. I am pretty sure I have to erase and install again, but I am not really sure on how to do it correctly especially since I can't even get to the desktop.

You most likely can do this:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Mac freezes, shows grey screen then starts back up

For the past two weeks I have had the issue of my iMac suddenly freezing for a few seconds and then it turns to a grey screen for a few more seconds before it starts back up on my user area.
All programs get shut down (which is annoying as I do graphic design so I'm usually on PS or AI and lose work I've done since last save). Programs which are set to start up automatically upon login do not start up. Thankfully firefox will start back up when I click it and continue from all the tabs I had open.
I cannot seem to find a source for this to be happening... The programs which are always running when this has happened previously are: Mac Mail, finder, Messages, Spotify, Wacom Desktop Center. This morning it happened when none of my adobe programs were running.
Has anyone had the same issue or knows what's up?
I tried to go to apple support but it said I need to pay £35 for someone to answer my question.

    Hi,
Try ; Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
and : About NVRAM and PRAM
to ensure the proper operation of the SMC.
and if still issues persist,  try: OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
    Cheers

    riyazfrombangalore,
your 13-inch Mid 2009 MacBook Pro requires 1066 MHz RAM, but you have 1333 MHz RAM installed. Try replacing the 1333 MHz RAM with 1066 MHz RAM — Macs can be picky about the RAM which they find acceptable.

I too have had this problem. It is not a Kernel panic, as far as I can tell. I have two Apple Cinema Displays connected. Both are dark, yet this time my mouse arrow is present. Most other times the screens are just dark. This is the first time I can ssh into my box and look at processes running. Other times the box was dead to the world. This most often happens after: a) lock screen, or b) Screen sharing into the box remotely. When I arrive back at work, the system is on, the screen is black, ssh into it may or may not work. This time I tried to kill all my processes one by one. Nothing released the machine display. Screen sharing into it also yields a black screen. I wish I knew how to restart a process like "WindowServ." Reboot computer via ssh command and display are up and running again.
I ran MemTest extensively from single user mode. No errors. I switched boxes, for I bought two identical systems (one for server, one for workstation.) I switched hard drives and ram. Issues still exists on both machines.

  • 17" Intel iMac Kernel Panic, Freezing at Grey Screen and Beeping!

    Hi there,
I have a new 17" Intel iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, 250 GB, 1GB Memory with OS X 10.4.8) that keeps getting those "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." messages.
It all started on Sunday when I tried to wake the computer (the computer went on Sleep by itself) and got that message so I restarted the computer but it froze on the grey screen (even before I got the Apple) and it beeped 3 times and then the light on front just kept blinking 3 times. I finally was able to erase and re-install OS X and everything was fine until I left the computer for a while, it went to sleep again, and then the message came back. I restarted and it seems to be fine but I'm worried the beeping and freezing will come back.
The first time this happened, I didn't know enough to "log" the kernel panics but I do know that I deleted a lot of the applications (iWeb, Garage Band, etc.) that I didn't need and fidged with the Share folder in the Users folder. I use a Flash Drive a lot and always left it connected to the keyboard's USB drive. Also leave my iPod Nano connected. After I reinstalled everything, I only deleted the Garage Band demos, installed and deleted the Firefox 2.0 and Opera (wanted to just stick with Firefox 1.0) applications. Only used the Flash Drive a little and haven't connected my iPod on yet. Trying to isolate the problem. I can't remember doing anything else.
Here's the log from the latest kernel panic:

I don't know what this part is about because I don't have a Printer hooked up to the computer.
The only other thing I can think of is I also installed WireTap and StuffIt before the initial crashing. I heard StuffIt was causing problems on some Intel Macs. Also changed a lot of the icons and changed the icon for Preview. I "verified" my hard drive and "verified and repaired the disk permissions" (I'm not that knowledgeable about computers let alone Macs). I also checked my hardware by pressing D while the grey CD OS X was running and get this:
    4MEME/4/40000000: 2F244040
usually during the initial testing but when I restart and try it again, it's fine.
Well, that's all I can think of. Any thoughts?
    Thanks a lot!

Thanks for the reply and links!
After the first problems, I re-seated the RAMs. Does this mean I have to buy new memory? This is a pretty new iMac, bought it in May and have only been using it for maybe two months. Haven't done a whole lot with it but I usually keep a lot of programs open at the same time. I have Adobe CS3 installed too and it says it needs at least 1 GB of memory. I've heard people saying it's best to have as much RAM (this Mac can only take up to 3GB) when using those programs. Maybe it's getting too heavy? Should I only keep one program open at a time? Also, which part of my post indicated that it was memory problems? What the "panic.log" stated or that "4MEME/4/40000000: 2F244040" stuff? Anything else I can do to not let this happen again?
    Thanks again!

  • Mac mini and grey screen at startup

ok, so last night we come home and my mom tries to turn on her mac mini, but it just freezes on the grey screen in the startup process. i tried booting from the disk but it didnt work (no the disk is stuck in the drive cuz i cant start up the computer to eject it) i tried booting into a version of osx on my external hd by holding down option at startup, but nothing showed up not even the internal hd. none of the startup commands work (firewire target, single user, safe mode, holding mouse to eject cd) none of those worked, any ideas?

First off, why can't you insert the original install
DVD that came with your mini?
The drive won't take the disk at all. I tried other disks as well, and it won't take any of them in either. The drive is pretty much non-responsive.
Secondly, if you leave the mini on the grey screen,
what happens? Does it keep going however long you
leave it, or does it show a flashing questions mark
    after maybe 15 minutes?
It remains on the gray screen for however long I leave it on.
Thirdly, since the mini was running for a couple of
days after the 10.4.8 update, the problem seems
unlikely to have been caused by that. What were you
doing the last time the mini was in use? How did you
    shut it down?
Browsing the web, email, and listening to music for the most part. I put it to sleep for the night, and then when I came back the next day to activate it, it froze on me. Pointer wouldn't move, it was locked up. First time that has ever happened to me. After that I ended up turning it off by holding the power button down for five seconds. When I turned it back on, I got the gray screen.
Fourthly, what model of mac mini is it?
It's the original basic model. 1.25 G4 processor, 40 GB hard drive, and 256 MB RAM.
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hey, since I have updated to 10.6.3 I have a similar issue. When I put my macbook pro to sleep and I come back a few hours later and turn my external monitor on I notice that the macbook is ON, BUT frozen! The time is usually a few hours back, so the macbook must have started up and frozen shortly after I had put it to sleep. There is no way to restart but to hold down the power button, SUPER annoying!
Hope this will get addressed in an update. Any way your problem is connected to sleep mode?

  • Macbook Pro 2010 OS X ML Won't Reinstall - Now Mac Stuck on Grey Screen

Two days ago I restarted my computer and it was stuck on the grey screen. I was able to enter safe mode and decided to reinstall OS X ML. It downloaded, and when it went to reinstall, I get an error. Tried several times, no luck. So I made a boot disk on a USB key, still no luck. "There was a problem installing 'Mac OS X'. Try reinstalling."
Now I cannot even enter safe mode. When I hold down the shift key, the apple icon scrolls through multiple icons. When I let go, the computer freezes.
I've checked the disk on Disk Utility and it says it's OK.
I have a disk copy of Snow Leopard, should I try reinstalling that and then upgrading to ML after?
    MBP 2010 i7 2.66
    Thanks!

Holding the shutdown buttom down for several seconds solved the problem. When I booted my mac again, it continued with the update. However, do you guys think my mac have taken damage of this?

  • My mac shows a grey screen and spinning gear and nothing else. please help! i want my mac to work again :/

My mac needed new updates and after clickign update it soon told me there was an error and it froze. I then let it sit fo about 15 minutes adn nothign changed so I restarted it and ever since then all my computer will show is the grey screen and a spinning gear :/ can anyone help me with this problem?

I had the same issue, and I had recently backed-up my files (mostly because the mac was acting wonky before this even happened), so I did an erase and install. Then I ran through all the software upgrades and installed all of them. When I did a required restart (for the Mac OS X 10.4.11 update) it went BACK to grey screen with spinning ball. Talk about frustrating!
I think there is something weird going on with the iTunes update and the Mac OS X 10.4.11 update. But one can't be used without the other. So I'm not sure how to update everything safely and get an up to date system, without having all the problems I had before. So now I'm using Mac OS X 10.4.7 so I can have a stable system to do my work, but I can't run iTunes 7.0. I'm too scared to update OS b/c I can't waste another day re-installing everything (for like the third time).
I'm a pretty new Mac user (year and half) so this may sound really dumb, but any suggestions would be very welcomed. I may start a new thread instead of hijacking this one...

  • Mac Mini Update - Grey Screen will not reboot

I just ran an update on my 2010 Mac Mini, I think it was the 10.8.6 update as I just downloaded to my MBA as well.  I now have a grey screen that asks me to reboot every time I do it comes back to the same screen.  Any ideas?  Thanks in advance

Well I tried the steps for a grey screen in the help section and it turns out it is a third party keyboard.  Any ideas now how to solve this or do I just junk it?

  • Mac book air grey screen padlock

when i turn on my macbookair I have a grey screen and a padlock w/ password bar. what's going on? what can I do to remedy the situation. thanks.

The following support article is somewhat outdated. Where it refers to booting from an installation disc, you should boot from your recovery partition (if running 10.7 or later) by holding down the key combination command-R at the chime. If your startup volume is encrypted with FileVault, you’ll have to unlock it in Disk Utility before you can do anything with it.
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup

  • I-MAC has the grey screen on start up, then shuts down after trying to load (bar shows 30%).

Shutdown my I-mac and next morning the grey screen appears with a loading bar which gets to 30% and then i-MAC shutsdown. Went into Utilities and it shows my files etc. but the verify and the repair disk have not corrected the issue(s).
What else can I do before I take it to the apple support. I live in Brunei and past history suggests that the Apple Support will just erase everything on the drive and I will lose the lot. I just want the photos and my own CD loaded music.
    Any suggestions would be welcome.

  • Mac Mini 2011 - Grey Screen in Mountain Lion Installation

I'm having major difficulties with my Mac Mini 2011.
It started with random grey screens appearing forcing me to restart. I restarted and continued working as normal.
Today, I restarted and it jumped directly into the grey screen again in startup.
    1.
    I booted into recovery mode
-Tried disk utility - repaired and everything seemed fine
-Rebooted and into grey screen again
    2.
    -Formated partition
-Started new installation and after downloading and 20min remaining, grey screen appears again
Restarted and everything went to grey screen portrayed in the link below:
    https://www.box.com/s/yqzizv9g1enob4cdc4yr
I'm stuck.. I believe this should be a clean installation. Why isn't this working?
    Can anyone help me please?

If you want to preserve the data on the boot drive, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • MacBook pro early 2008 screen starts flickering, then freezes. Force shutdown then freezes at grey screen start up. HELP!

My computer screen started to flicker. Then the mouse pointer will freeze while the screen continues to flicker, not allowing me to do anything except force shut down with power button. When starting up, the rotating circle freezes up on the gray screen. I try starting up from the Snow Leopard CD and either I get a error message about something wrong with the power supply and needing a force shut down or screen flickers and mouse pointer freezes again.

I ended up taking it to an Apple store for diagnostic tests.  They tried what I did (safe boot, start from disk utility, hardware checks), and it didn’t work.  They tried to start-up from an external hard drive and when that didn’t work the employee recommended I leave it for more testing.  His initial guess was the hard drive was bad.  I called a week later for a status update and they said the logic board was the problem and they were going to fix it free of charge.  Given that my Apple Care expired two months prior and otherwise would’ve charged me over $500 to fix, I didn’t ask questions about the problem.  So far my computer is working well, though when I try to load downloaded music from my iPhone to iTunes, it’s recognized as a new computer and I have to reauthorize it to my iTunes account.
