Mac freezes when using Core Image apps (iMaginator, Lineform-) but-

… not with Apple Core Image apps like iPhoto or Aperture.
The computer freezes and after rebooting and checking the logfile, it says :
Sep 14 20:06:46 PowerMac-G4 kernel[0]: ATIRadeon9700::waitfor_rbspace: Overflowed block waiting for FIFO space. Have 2, need 5. RBBM_STATUS 0x8401c100
I've upgraded my G4 AGP with a Radeon 9800 pro. It seems to be a driver issue or a Core Image bug. After talking with an expert from Strange Dogs, it could be a driver issue concerning especially the G4 AGP and the 9800 pro. Does some one know something about this problem ?
Thank you very much.

Hey, what os version are You using ?
It's possible that it's hard drive but also its possible that is just ram.
Get same software for disk test and check whats the time for accesing data.
Also you might check ram, easest way is to open any file document and just copy any text with cmd+c cmd+v
to the moment the ram would be almoust full then remove all text. if it crashes then it seems that its ram

  • Disk Utility Freeze when using New Image

    Has anybody experienced the following?:
    my system:
Brand new Mac Pro 8-core 2.66GHz
    24GB RAM
    Snow Leopard 10.6.3 freshly installed
    Apple SuperDrive DVD
I am in the process to install a lot of software and I like to make Disk Image of the software DVD to make things quicker to install.
Now what happens is that as soon as I select New Image from Disk Utility (after selecting the DVD on the left menu), the New Image progress window appears and then Disk Utility freezes. The disk image is being created in the background, but the progress window DOES NOT show the disk image status and eventually I have to OPTION-APPLE ESC from Disk Utility.
    What I have tried is:
. delete plist for Disk Utility in Preferences
. repair permissions in SAFE BOOT mode
After that Disk Utility/New Image will work the first time as expected, and then the next time I am getting the same problem.
Any ideas what I could try to diagnose/fix this problem?
    Thank you!

    Thanks for your feedback.
As far as making a disk image or not, yes it takes some times to create it... longer? I am not sure because when you install a software there is a back and forth reading/writing, whereas when you create your disk image it does the reading and writing in a linear fashion... anyway to me the big benefit is when you have more than one disk part of an install (Apple FCS, Adobe CS, etc...) once you have created all your disk image, it will install everything automatically without having to feed each disc... and usually I have to do a fresh install later on... and finally it gives you a backup of your software...
    Thanks again.

  • Mac Freezes When Using Skype and Watching Video

I have a Mac (OS X Ver. 10.6.8 Build 10K549) with 4 GB Memory and 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 Processor. My Mac freezes, and requires a hard reset. **Everything** freezes, keyboard and mouse click no longer works. Sound may continue. This happens all the time I use **Skype** and sometimes when I watch **video** online. This happened before when I was using Mavericks. It reached to a point that I could not use my Mac. I basically installed **Snow Leopard** back again. Problem was solved until the last two days. I deleted and re-installed Skype. This did not solve the issue. Unfortunately, I could not find a solution to my problem after a research in these pages. Thanks.

I had the same problem but it seemed to stop after I installed a program called Caffeine that prevents your Mac from automatically going to sleep, dimming the screen or starting screen savers. I haven't had a freeze-up as long as I have it enabled.

  • Why does my airbook mac freeze when using external hard drive

This is a recent development, my MacBook Air freezes when I attach my external CD drive and I have to do a hard restart (hold the power button till it turns off). This never use to happen. Any suggestions? Cheers!

    Hi
Can anyone suggest what is happening and how to get around this? In worst case is there a way to move the files outside of imovie that will still allow them to be properly displayed within imovie?
I don't think that it can be done that way - BUT I KNOW that it can be very destructive
most probably end up as un-reparable.
The move of projects and events - works so much better in iMovie'09

  • My ipod touch 3rd gen freezes when using the itunes app looking for podcasts

When looking at podcasts with my Ipod touch's itunes app, when i attempt to download podcasts from the nerdist podcast, the itunes app freezes and shuts me out for a minute or two. This only happens on some podcasts but not all.

Okay so, with some patience and some tinkering... It appears to be a problem with the most popular podcasts.  Maybe something to do with so many people downloading it at the same time?  Anyway, I've found you just have to wait it out.  Keep your itouch active and from going to sleep and eventually it will load the podcasts and you will be able to download them.  On average it takes me anywhere from 2 to 8 minutes to get my most popular podcasts, I just keep it on the screen and keep it from going to sleep

  • Mac freezing when using Photoshop or other Adobe programs

Hey guys I'm having some issues with Photoshop and some other Adobe programs (After Effects, Premiere). These programs are on version CS6 and work fine until maybe 10-20 minutes later it freezes the whole computer. I can't move anything, it just freezes. It's only with Adobe programs, that's why I'm here.
    Help?

If the whole computer freezes, you're looking at OS, hardware, or low level driver problems.
The most common cause is bad RAM.  But we've also seen it caused by bad motherboards, CPUs, GPUs, and power supplies.
Photoshop, After Effects, and Premiere share very little code.
So what you're saying is that programs that move a lot of memory and use the GPU extensively are causing the machine to freeze.
That still means it could be the RAM, CPU, motherboard, or GPU.

  • Mac Freezes when using mouse scroll wheel (logitech)

    Hi there,
I have a logitech MX1000 mouse + the same iMac Alu's at home at work.
In any Finder window if I scroll with the wheel down the file/folder list + open/save dialogs the whole system freezes, sometimes it recovers on its own after a few seconds othertimes (this depends seems to depend on how much I've scrolled) if I change spaces it recovers and catches up with its self.
It happens on both my machines almost every Finder window I scroll in, scrolling works fine in PathFinder, but I still have to use Finder for open and save file dialogs.
    Is there a solution?
    Or is it Logitech's fault?
    Cheers

    Hello rob:
If that is the only thing that causes a freeze, I would suspect the mouse.

  • Mac freezing when using install DVD Leopard

    Hi ALL,
I was rebooting my Mac whit the original install DVD OSX LEOPARD 10.5x
I liked to run repair permissions from it because I think that I have some problems running the system.
BUT, after I reboot and holding down the C-key, select the language, choose from the menu bar "Disc-utilities and select "Repair Permissions" the progress bar started moving.
After a while nothing happens any more ... the mouse is still moving, but can't select anything in the Menu Bar or quit the process.
I hat to shutdown my Mac by pressing the power button.
Can any one tell me why ... it happens, or what should I do ?
    Dimaxum

    Hi D:
From what I have read, permission repair is best run from the internal HD as all the latest OS X updates are applied.
Incidentally, permission repair under OS X 10.5 takes forever. I now run OS X 10.6 and the tims have improved significantly.
In any event, you will get differing opinions, but running permission repair is, IMHO, a waste of time. I admit I do it after software updates, but that is a "hangover" from the old days when permission repair was like a +"magic bullet."+

  • MacBook Pro freezes when using any app other than the web browser.

My MacBook freezes when using any app other than the web browser. I can open up Google Chrome and use it all day with no problem, but if I minimize it and try to browse through photos in my picture folder or do anything that involves the Finder, the computer just freezes up and I get the rainbow wheel. If I put in a CD to play it, the computer freezes with the rainbow wheel. Any suggestions? I would like to use the mac for more things than the internet.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

The numeral part of my keyboard causes my mac mini to freeze when using the 0 - 9 keys.. I have to restart to continue.
Does it have to do with the disk utility?
I already did the disc repair job

Open System Preferences - Universal Access and check whether 'Mouse Keys' are activated.
If so, then deactivate them. They could be the cause of your problem.

  • Test runner freezing when used with Dynamics CRM (and other apps) - Both applications freeze and never come back...

We are trying to use test runner with dynamics CRM.
MS Dynamics CRM will freeze and will not respond (even after 10 - 15 minutes). When this happens, the test manager will either freeze or a message will apear saying "waiting for application under test".
We are not recording action recordings...This makes using test manager impossible. It happens consistently, starting with slowing the PC down (mouse moving slowly, slow to load in new screens, drop downs etc) eventually leading to the app freezing.
Tried on windows xp, windows 7 etc on various specs of pcs.

I am experiencing this same issue with
Test runner freezing when used with Dynamics CRM. I notice this was first posted in June of 2010 and so far no
resolution? I was wondering if it could be related to memory issues? Do you have any troubleshooting ideas? The
issue for me seems to be sporadic and I can't
    reproduce it every time.
The message I get is "waiting on application under test".

    And How ?
What Data will be lost - or is all backup with Time Machine like Photos ,......
    Thanks in advance -
If you follow your plan, you will learn a lot and not be nearly so "new" to Mac. Here are my responses to your latest questions/statements:
So i think i will try to make a clean Installation .
In our jargon, a "clean" install means that you will erase your disk and individually reinstall your system and applications, and then restore your data files. This method is very thorough and will give you a pristine system, but it requires considerably more of your time and effort than other methods that may correct your problems.
Easier alternatives are available for your consideration. Before you undertake a system reinstall, read the rest of this post and then study this document and the links in the document that are applicable to your problem and plans:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1388
If you decide to reinstall your system, carefully consider your installation options:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545 (also applies to OS 10.6)
As i am "new" into Mac - what will be the best way .
"Best" can mean different things to different people. For example:
    • The method explained in the User Guide (manual) that came with your Mac is the easiest way.
    • The "Erase and Install" option from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545 is quicker to reinstall, but requires more work for apps and data after the OS is installed.
    • Archive and Install with the "Preserve user and network settings" option eliminates the need for reinstalling apps and reconfiguring network and other user settings by "preserving" these things during the OS reinstall. Unfortunately, it sometimes also preserves the problem that is causing your difficulty.
    • Secure erase before installing OS assures that NOTHING unwanted remains on your disk to cause problems after the reinstall. One pass of writing Zeros is sufficient for your purpose. Note that secure erase will take hours, depending on the size of your disk. The help article below applies to your 10.5&6 as well as the 10.4 it states,:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1011.html
Perhaps easiest of all (as least for Time Machine users) is to use your Mac's Leopard Install DVD and your Time Machine backup to "Restore" your system to a configuration dated BEFORE you did the update that has caused your problems. This method will get you working quickly, but it will not help you use Snow Leopard. If you have not already figured out how to do this "Restore," see:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
The section entitled " Using Disk Utility" will help you use your Time Machine backup to take your entire system back to when Leopard was working. After it works again, either stay with Leopard, or uninstall or update whatever software is causing your Snow Leopard conflict before again updating to Snow Leopard.
My questions - with what System CD i should start to make the clean install ? 10.5 or 10.6 ?
Use Leopard Install CD if you want to backup to Leopard.
Only use Snow Leopard if you want to try a fresh install of SL to see if you can get it working.
    And How ?
Depending on your needs and whether you bought your Mac and SL update locally, and especially if your time is valuable to you, the best way may be to contact your retailer for an appointment so he can either help you or fix your problem for you. If you can use this as a training exercise, you will find it easier to do than to read and write about, and you can ask questions during the process. If you retailer does not consider proper installation of the SL software you bought from him to be part of his service, and if he offers "One to One", you may find it well worth your time and its cost:
      http://www.apple.com/retail/onetoone/
If you have plenty of time, or if you merely like doing things for yourself, follow the instructions for the Disk you are using (or the instructions in the links I cite above if you want to try one of those methods.) Remember, you can try an easy/quick way first in case it works without all the manual effort on your part. If that fails to correct your problem, you are only out your time. You can try the next easiest way, and keep trying increasingly complex methods until you find the one that works for you.
What Data will be lost - or is all backup with Time Machine like Photos ,......
This answer varies depending on which method you use to restore your system or reinstall your OS:
    • NOTHING IS LOST when you Archive & Install
(if you "preserve user and network settings" before installing)
    • EVERYTHING IS LOST when you secure erase.
    • Other methods may keep data but lose application or user configuration settings.
    (1) I use SL on two Macs and it work GREAT on both. I WANT to use SL because I like it MUCH better than Leopard.&ensp:You did not ask this, but here is how I would proceed to get SL working:
♦ Unless you already have it, I would make another, separate, backup of all important data in addition to the one you already have in Time Machine. One backup is not enough for me. In addition to your music, photos, and other data files, consider items like those listed here:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2980
♦ THEN, I would securely erase the startup disk and follow the instructions that came with the SL DVD to install SL.
♦ Immediately after the restart that completes the install, I would use Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions.
♦ Then configure your internet connection, and download and install the Mac OS X v10.6.2 Update (Combo):
      http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959
♦ Immediately after the restart that completes the Combo Update, repair permissions again.
♦ Once you have reinstalled SL, use  > Software Update... to update any other Apple software as needed. I repair permissions before and after any installer than asks me to enter my Administrator Password.
♦ Now you can test your iMac using http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 to verify that the problem is resolved. If your problem persists at this point, see your Apple Authorized Service Provider for professional help.
♦ You can restore your data files either now or after reinstalling third-party items.
♦ Now, you can reinstall necessary third-party software. Install only one item at a time and test thoroughly before adding another so you can tell if one of them is causing a problem.
    (2) If you would rather retreat to Leopard and not bother trying to fix SL on your Mac, the easiest fix will be to restore your Leopard system from Time Machine. You can then restore any data newer than your last working Leopard system from your backups.

  • My iMac freezes when using Firefox

My iMac freezes when using Firefox. We have to restart our computer.

TutorDaddy, if this Mac is still covered by the initial warranty or under AppleCare, take it in and have it looked at. As the old label used to say, there truly are "no user serviceable parts inside." Kernel panics very usually indicate failing hardware.
I have an older iBook G4 that started developing kernel panics and like you, despite reinstalling the OS from a freshly formatted volume, they kept continuing. I looked at the crash log and saw that in each instance of panic, the last bit of code to be accessed had something to do with AirPort. Knowing that the AirPort software was at then current levels, I surmised the problem to be a bad AirPort networking card which, on that particular model of the iBook, was a very small module attached directly to the logic board. Since the computer was out of AppleCare, I broke the machine down myself (I didn't realize that there could be so many barely visible screws in one machine) and removed the offending piece of hardware. My iBook lives but without WiFi, it now sits as a more or less desktop machine needing an ethernet connection to stay connected to a network.
I do not suggest you break into your iMac. First of all, I'm guessing one would need to be able to pull off the glass and have the necessary glue to reattach it, which is not really available to us consumers. If you're feeling adventurous enough to read the crash logs from each panic, you might be able to surmise the hardware component (or badly written application or library; it can happen) that's causing the panic. If it's a software issue, remove the offending software app and see if the panics return. If it's a hardware issue, it's best to let a competent service tech qualified on Apple hardware to handle it.
    [edited to add:]
After browsing through related problems in the discussions, I saw this link to a third-party web site being handed out. Perhaps you'll find it useful: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
