Mac-Friendly Cameras

OK, I made a big mistake in think the Sony HDR-SR1 (hard-drive hi-def) prosumer camera would push files into FCP. LOL!
So, I'll collect anyone's recommendations on FCP-friendly video cameras -- prosumer to high-end pro.
Thanks.

Thank you, my friend. I will email the USA Today writer to find out what conversion program he's talking about. After a month of rather intensive looking, I've yet to discover anything that makes the camera really compatible with FCP. In act, Sony does everything it can to steer you to their Vaio brand, and, alas, Apple wonders why you would not buy a product without Firewire. My bad.
To summarize: the HDR-SR1 in standard def mode produces mpeg-2 files transferrable via the camere USB to your Mac. From there one can use Streamclip to convert to DV and then import into FCP. Total pain, but faster than re-digitzing internally. There is nothing I know of that will convert the camera's 1080i AVCHD codec to DV for FCP -- that's another chapter in the future sometime.
There was also, in my first time out with the camera, a significant audio issue. The camera actually delivers 5.1 Dolby surround. Nifty, huh? (And it works really well). Trouble is, that audio requires a second conversion to make it just two channel or mono. There is no such beast as 5.1 Dolby in DV for FCP.
In my first little documentary project, I gave up on the hard drive transfer and just re-digitized 7 hours of video using a Canopus digitizer and the camera's S-video/composite audio out. It was acceptable.
Finally, they don't tell you this in the poorly written Sony HDR-SR1 manual, but the viewfinder is in "overscan" mode, which means it does not fully reflect what you're recording. The viewfinder is slightly pushed or zoomed in compared to the actual recorded image. It changes your thinking on framing when you know this.

  • Replacing my HDD in my Early 2011 Macbook Pro...Trying to decide between Samsung 840 EVO 250 gb and Crucial M500 240 gb. Samsung is faster but less "mac-friendly". Should I opt for the Crucial due to the "mac-friendliness"?

I have a S.M.A.R.T error on my current Hitachi drive that came with me Early 2011 Macbook pro. Want to upgrade to SSD.
Trying to decide between Samsung 840 EVO 250gb and Crucial M500 240gb, at this gb range, the Samsung is faster and uses less wattage....ONE PROBLEM...I have read many user experiences that note it is much less mac-friendly...
The software samsung  offers is not IOS compatible and some report lower than expected speeds after installation...Also apparently the RAPID MODE of the drive, the fastest drive mode is nonexistant when installed on a Macbook pro?
Should I opt for the slower and more power cosuming Crucial M500 240gb SSD because it is more Mac-friendly? Does anyone have a Samsung 840 EVO 250 gb SSD installed in their macbook pro? What has been your experience?
    Thanks ahead of time!
    Resoure: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crucial-m500-1tb-ssd,3551.html

I decided against the Evo as there are too many Mac users that have had issues with slow speed on them. Even without these, the main speed that Samsung states for the Evo comes form turbo Write which is a PC only feature as is software dependent.
I'm sorry but Crucials M500 is simply too slow compared to modern drives to be recomended. Read speed is ok, but the write is far too slow for the price.
I've used and installed both a Samsung 840 basic and a Samsung 840 Pro in 2 separate Mac books! and currently have the 840 Pro in my own MacBook Pro and it comes very highly recomended. It's all but the fastest Sata III drive you can buy - A few OCZ drives just edge it but the difference is negligible. Samsung by far have the best reliability though when it comes to SSD's. I've been getting 520Mb/s easily on mine consistently, and without getting a MacBook with a PCIe drive you won't get a faster more reliable drive.
I really would recommend nothing else.

  • Looking MAC friendly camcorder.  Any idea????

Hi folks...i'm looking for a camcorder and i'm having problems trying to find one that does a good job and is MAC friendly.
    Any advice?
    Cheers

We use the Panasonic NV-GS70 which is a 3CCD camera. It films great! With 3 sensors to capture the image the quality is very good. We have used it with 4 different Macs with no problems (iMac G4-17, PB G4-12, iMac G5-20 and PM Dual 2.3-20).
Read some of the reviews online for further info, but it has good write-ups from users and magazines. The Panasonic 3CCD range is a good place to start, if not the cheapest due to the technology involved.
    Hope this helps.
PS: Sony 3CCD cameras were over a $1000 more and semi-pro (giant size) only when we bought our camera!

  • Hello Mac Friend, do you have any idea the compatible of 1333Mhz 16GB ecc module for MacPro late 2012 ?

Hello Mac Friend, do you have any idea the compatible of 1333Mhz 16GB ecc module for MacPro late 2012 ?

You can spend months developing the expertise to choose exactly the right modules for a one-off purchase of RAM for your Mac.
Or you can deal with a Mac-centric Vendor who already knows this information and will provide the correct modules for your exact model Mac, and stand behind them, for about the same price. Deal with Vendors who say:
    "It works in your Mac,
    or your money BACK."
In the US, OWC (at MacSales.com) provides good support
Many readers recommend crucial, I personally do not.
I do most of my business with DataMemorySystems.com, as they tell you exactly what they are sending and have slightly better prices than OWC.
If you are in another part of the world, please respond with what markets are available to you and readers can make additional recommendations.
EDIT: 16GB DIMMs for this Mac are Registered DIMMs, and are subject to special rules:
They do not mix with other sizes AT ALL.
At most 3 modules of this size can be installed on each SIDE (6 total on the 8-core and 12 core)

  • My 2012 Mac Mini came with a SSD and with Yosemite, can I add a SSHD and also migrate everything from a Macbook Pro that is running Lion 10.7.5?

    Hi Apple Community,
Today I received a refurbished 2012 i5 Mac Mini that I purchased via Amazon. The Mac Mini came with a 256gb Samsung SSD only installed. The Mac Mini also has 10.10.2 Yosemite.
I am planing on ordering an "OWC Data Doubler Mounting Kit" to add another drive onto the Mac Mini.
I also plan on getting a second drive which would be a 1tb SSHD Black Western Digital (16GB SSD) 2.5 SATA III (6.0GB/s) 5400RPM drive.
Now here is where I am a very confused and concerned. What I essentially want to do is use Migration Assistant to completely migrate what I have on a 2012 i7 Macbook Pro's 750gb HDD to the Mac Mini's 1tb SSHD drive. I want every file and setting to be placed on my new Mac Mini just the way it is on the Macbook Pro. The Macbook Pro is however using 10.7.5 Lion while my new Mac Mini is using 10.10.2 Yosemite.
What makes me confused is, if I migrate everything from the Macbook Pro onto the 1tb SSHD, would I still be able to benefit by having the 256gb Samsung SSD in the Mac Mini? For instance, would the Mac Mini still be able to boot up super fast and use the SSD to write and read programs very fast? Or is it because I am migrating everything from my Macbook Pro's HDD onto the Mac Mini's 1tb SSHD, my Mac Mini will not be able to use the speed benefits of the SSD?
Another concern is, will I be able to use Yosemite or will I be stuck with 10.7.5 Lion? I would only like Yosemite. I do not mine if Lion is removed from my new Mac Mini.

    UPDATE:
    Hi again,
I made more research on raid and now I am considering not to raid at all.
Raid0 seems extremely risky because I do not know how the SSD and SSHD would react together.
And Raid1 seems like it would not be able to function the way I would like to store my files. [The SSD is 256gb and SSHD is 1tb, there is no point in raid1]
I think I will just have to add the second drive and use it without raid. I will mostly save media files such as movies, pictures, and music. And for everything else, save it onto the SSD's storage.

Yes. You will have to reformat it with the disk utility though.

  • Mac mini camera issue

Hi,  Just trying to get a mic camera combo to work on the mini.  Any cameras that definitely work?  I have 3 that don't.  Mic is the problem.

We've used the Logitech Quickcam Vision Pro for Mac, with camera and mike that works fine.  We bought it in 2010, so it may not be available new today (although maybe thru ebay, amazon, or others that still have stock). If I was buying new I would consider the appropriate Logitech version that they sell for macs now, too.

  • Home movie dvds into Mac Friendly format?

I have some dvds of old home movies and want to work with them on my mac. I can make video clips with the dvd player but can't move any of those clips either to idvd or imovie. I don't think the formats are compatible -dvd says it's .bup, .ifo, .vob....

    Dear  MAC-Friends.
    PLEASE HELP ME.
I am extremely afraid to do something wrong - what will be a failure so I loose all the photos I had in my iphoto library before installing the Mountain Lion.
I have just installed the MOUNTAIN-LION and now I can´t use my Iphoto-programme without answering the following question:
Choose another Library ?  ( But I only want the choose the photos which one was in the old iPhoto-Library and not the other photos on the MAC-computer ? ).
    and the other possibility is:
    Create a new Libray ! Which iPhoto-library  ?
And why create a new and to risq to loose the old photos.
    PLEASE HELP ME.
    Kind regards  FINN GRABOWSKI

Ok. Let me first ask you, do you have any backups of your files - for example, do you use Time Machine or any other backup system?
Next, quit iPhoto. In the Finder, go to your Pictures folder. Is there a file there called iPhoto.Library? How large is it? (If it doesn't show the size, click once on it, click cmd-I to see the information). If it's a healthy size (ie, several GB), then that should be your library, and you can double-click it to launch iPhoto. (The application will remember where your library is next time, you can just launch iPhoto normally).
If that's not the right file, check your Trash. Is there anything in there?
    Matt

  • Can't connect to my mac friend!

    Hi All,
I have trouble connecting to AIM users, but that's another story for now ...
Wierd thing is that I connect to all my mac iChat user friends at our homes, except one. When accepting I get a "I didn't respond" error message, along with this explanation below. We've both trashed our ichat preference files and no help. The one tie I can think of at this point is that we're both vonage users?

    Hi Ralph,
Yes the screen name works. I'm confused though. My screen name is only letters and numbers. What exactly do you mean?
On the iChat.plist stuff. The only reason I mentioned that was because along with your forum, I picked up that information on a very helpful site:
    http://www.mvldesign.com/videoconferencetutorial.html#xp
The funny thing is that she and I are the only ones who cannot chat with each other. We both can chat with others when at our homes. We successfully chatted when I had my macbook pro with me at a hotel recently. The only thing I can think of is that we're both vonage users and when we're using that together, there's a glitch?
I have other problems, mainly with pc users and AIM, not being able to chat - but one thing at a time ... trying to work out this glitch with my mac friend first.
    Thank you for your time,
    Regards,
    Deb

  • Display is using my Mac's camera... not its own!

So I've got a new 24" LED cinema display and everything is connected properly. However, for some reason, whenever I go to use the iSight camera, it uses my Mac's camera instead of the display's! The USB cord is connected and everything! Ideas? Thanks.

In ichat go into preferences, then go to camera. You will be able to change which camera you want to view (either display or macbook pro). For photo both just click the camera in the menu bar. You will have the same choices as ichat. If neither of these show up restart your computer while being plugged into the your screen.
    Hello, Tylko
For clarity to OP and other readers, I offer the following regarding this part of your suggestion:
For photo both ... You will have the same choices as ichat.
That is not true on my Mac.
My Photo Booth ONLY uses the first connected camera it recognizes that is not already in use. Clicking the camera in the my Photo Booth menu bar when multiple cameras are connected results in NO DIFFERENCE from the same action when only one camera is detected.
Even when multiple cameras that work properly with other apps are connected, Photo Booth does not allow a camera choice on my PowerMac G5 no matter where I click.
While it is true that iChat offers a choice of cameras, if what you post is true, there is a major difference between your Photo Booth for iNtel Mac and the Photo Booth that runs on my PowerPC Mac.

  • Can't chat with friends who use AIM unless .mac friends host group chat

For some reason, I can only text chat with my friends who use iChat with AIM accounts. When my friends with .mac accounts are on iChat, we can use video conference and send pictures via text easily.
The only way I can video conference with my AIM friends (and send pictures) is if the .mac friends host the chat. We've all made sure we're using the upgraded softwares, and we're all using iChat AV 3.1.8... We all have the correct preferences according to iChat help, as well as meet all requirements listed on the Apple site.
I have found no record of anyone else having this problem, nor can I find anything that remotely relates to anything similar.
What are we doing wrong??? Has anyone else experienced this?

    Ok,
Can you tell me everyone's Upload and download speeds please ?
    http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page5.html#_speedtests
Also how is each person connected to the Internet ?
    Modem > computer Or
    Modem > router > computer ?
Can you list how the ports are opened or allowed in each device ?
If I understand you correctly can you add the other screen name to the other computer's iChat and see if it is computer related.
If you have done Port Forwarding then it is most likely this is to one computer. This would only allow one computer at your end to Video chat. (adding the other screen nmae should give you Video on both screen names). As you have changed the Login port to 443 for everyone you will be able to Text chat as this is below port 1024 which is where the ports need to opened if above this number.
As File sharing (sending Pics is on Port 5190 and UDP protocol this has not been moved and would explain why it can not be done.
