Mac friendly, inexpensive online backup

I use Time Machine and a NAS server to backup my and my wife's computers. However, to be really secure you need an offsite backup (god forbid the house burns down or something!). What online backup services have you had success with? I've researched http://mozy.com and i've heard some pretty horrible stories about it. I came across http://www.sugarsync.com today but I know nothing about it. Any suggestions or horror stories so I know what to check out or avoid?

Please define 1) 'inexpensive' and 2) how much space you need.
These two factors are critical in answering your question. To some people, $10/year seems like a reasonable price for 1TB of online storage, but they're either not the people who are running the site, or they don't really care about their data. (Hint: you cannot provide 1TB of online storage for $10/year).
On the space issue, you have a different set of options depending on how much space you need. Almost anyone will give 10-20GB of space. Few people will offer 1TB (at least, not cost-effectively).
So once you have those answers you can look to find a match. For many people, though, MobileMe works well. It won't be the cheapest way to get 20GB of storage, but it does come with other benefits, too.

What is the best online backup system to use for mac?

By online, do you mean backup to the cloud, where you pay a monthly fee for the service to host your data?
If this is the case, then there are a lot of services (do not know them all, but DropBox, CrashPlan, Carbonite, Mozy, SugarSync, come to mine, and that is not a complete list.
There are also services that allow you to backup over your home network or across the internet to your own storage.  CrashPlan has this option (for free), and Transporter come to mind.  CrashPlan talks to another computer also running CrashPlan that you own or have some control (could even be a friend or relatives computer).  Transporter is hardware that you either provide some storage of your choice, or they will sell the unit with storage.
I'm mostly a CrashPlan to my own storage user.  I backup to a Mac mini for my Mom (300 miles away) and Wife (she is local )
Can clarify your exact desires or needs.

  • Re: Online Backup Services for Mac?

pc users have online backup services such as carbonite to choose from. Is there an equivalent backup service for Macs?
My pc friend says he pays $50/year for his online service which makes more sense than having an external drive next to your computer. Good when your hard drive craps out, yes, but not so good if both get damaged due to fire, water, etc. or disappear due to theft.

There are a few, but I have only been experimenting with .Mac so far (which mostly for the other features). You can do a search for : online backup for mac : and several show up. I have heard good things from others about Mozy. Note the file transfer for any online service will be limited by your network bandwidth and availability.
    Others may have specific recommendations.

  • Online backup for Windows and Mac

Is there an online backup service that works with Windows and Mac and lets you use the same login? Meaning, one service, one service to pay and same login? Also, the service shouldn't bill by each desktop (as Mozy does) but instead by overall space needed.
I currently use one service for Windows and another for Mac. I'd like to consolidate everything.

That's always the risk, it's what happened to MediaMax (though in their case it was technical incompetence). They've been around for at least a year, but I can't offer any guarantees, obviously.
the MobileMe idisk might be a possible solution but it's not brilliant with Windows.

  • How to use online backup services with a Mac.

I want to use an online backup service but each one I check out is unable to backup at least one of my key files and perhaps others that I havent tested yet.
I use an old palm pda and a current version of the palm desktop for mac. I'm quite happy with it and have tons of info on it.
But the online backup services store the files on an IBM server and when I restore it to my Macbook I get a Unix. exe file that I cannot use. I cant even import it or open it on a pc (which would be an acceptable solution in case of an emergency).
I really need a good backup solution for all my Mac files.
I've spoke to Apple, Palm and the techs at the online backup services and no one has a solution.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

You are very welcome. I don't think you can do scheduled updates. Apparently what happens is that the update happens whenever anything is changed on the desktop iDisk. No you don't have to recreate the desktop iDisk ever. That is, you can leave it on your desktop continuously. I trashed mine because I don't like to have things working in the background if I don't currently need them. On the other hand if I changed many things in a day, then I'd leave it on the desktop continuously.
If you check out all the MobileMe features, then you might decide that you like it. Your Dock mail program mirrors exactly what is on the MobileMe online mail program. I have to admit that the online program is very slow. But, the on Dock program more than makes up for the deficiency. Back to Mac is a cool feature. And, the online photo album feature is very easy and works well, except that it doesn't seem able to handle animated gifs.

  • Mac OS 10.8 Online Backup Issue

I recently upgraded to Mac OS 10.8.  Now my online backup software doesn't seem to work.  The information says it is compatible with up to 10.7.  So is this another example of Verizon not updating their software to work with the latest OS?  I can't connect to the online server and some of the options in the System Preferences are acting flaky.
    Anyone else having this problem?
    Dan

I am glad I saw thiis. I am just trying to set up my backup and am not able to use my id and password without it getting rejected. I know that is the info they are calling for . Can not find any answers after scouring this site.. That always seems to be the way, There is so much halfway vague info but never really what i need. Perhaaps i just don't have the where withall to locate it. i hope i can cancel the service .

  • Idrive for mac os 10.4.11 online backup

Anyone with experience using this free online backup system?

I'm liking iDrive pretty well. I have 15 GB for free now. You can get 5 GB to start, and another 10 GB by giving them access to an email account with at least five working contacts. It's pretty easy to create that (without giving them your actual email account). So, for free, I'm happy.
I don't think I'm going to buy the 150 GB, though. I can't seem to iron out a kink. It has trouble following the path to my files. So it backs up everything properly, doing full backups of new stuff, only incremental backups where necessary, and skipping things already in sync. But it also picks up my user or applications folder twice by way of a second apparent path sometimes, and creates duplicate folders and files. So, I go in regularly and delete the duplicate folders from the cloud files. That's annoying. But for free, I'll live with it.
On another thread (they told me it was the wrong forum, so I moved over here) - anyway on that other thread, I've been offered two suggestions - MediaFire and DropBox.
So, maybe there are three options out there for Tiger users.

  • Database open fails after online backup recovery

    Hi Friends
We are trying to set up an additional server using the online backup of our DEV server. We have been following SAP Note 549828 for the same. Having restored the online backup, the open database failed.
To resolve the same, in accordance to SAP Note 549828, we created a backup control file with success using the command

However on issuance of the command
RECOVER DATABASE USING BACKUP CONTROLFILE UNTIL CANCEL

Some inputs addition to Erics comments
The problem is you dont have archives ie Offline redo logfiles in correct location.
/oracle/DEV/oraarch/DEVarch1_9766.dbf  Here DEVarch1_9766 is archive file which is misssing from location /oracle/DEV/oraarch. To recover DB you need Archives generated during hot backup.
Generally these steps willl give you desired result.
    select * from v$logfile;
We normally switch the log files to the number of log groups that exist
    alter system switch logfile;
create a Backup directory to hold our hot back datafiles and Archives
When the backup is complete check the backup location to see if all the files are available. We could now either FTP the same to the other system or copy over these files to another location in case of cloning on the same system.
Copy over all the files to their respective filesystems and directories and then edit the file that was created using the backup controlfile to trace. Copy that file to the remote system and edit it accordingly.
check that all the files are in the right location and edit that information in the control file
Once the controlfile is run successfully and you get the statement processed, we can start applying the archive logs that we have moved to the archive log destination directory as per the init<sid>.ora file.
do a recover of the database to its consistent state
    recover database using backup controlfile until cancel;
The create control file command only changes the structure of the database and the SID name, the header of the datafiles still hold all the required information. The above command would ask you to input the archive log file names one by one to do recovery or you could choose the AUTO option. Once the recovery process is complete, open the database with the resetlogs option

  • What is the best online backup for OS 10.5.8? And if I Reinstall OS will I have problems?

My old Mac has had the flashing question mark file on a blue screen. I waited a couple days, turned it back on and it worked. However, in between that time I went and bought a new Macbook Air. I am relieved to have all of my pics and docs back. I need a good online backup. I downloaded BackBlaze Backup but it is taking forever and I am not sure if it's the best choice.
My plan is to backup all of my files and then wipe my computer clean with the install disks and give my computer to my little sister. So, my question is two fold; which is best online backup and will I have any issues wiping clean the computer and doing a reinstall? For example, will all the updates still be available? What is the best thing for me to do?
    Thank you : )

Just understand it gets pretty expensive after you exceed the free space. 2-5 GBs isn't much space.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
         drive being backed up.
    3. Time Machine requires a backup drive that is at least double the
capacity of the drive(s) it backs up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
      1. Cool Drives
      2. OWC
      3. WiebeTech
      4. Firewire Direct
      5. California Drives
      6. NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • Online backup client eats CPU!

I have an online backup client from Mozy installed on my Mac Mini, and the actual backup process is scheduled to run daily at 23:00. The automatic backup is switched off. However, the backup client process is running at all times, and sometimes takes 50 - 60% of the CPU even when the scheduled daily backup is not being taken. This is not always momentary, and seems to continue for minutes, not just a few seconds. As you may imagine, this has a serious effect on the performance of the machine and is very frustrating.
An additional problem is that it seems impossible to stop the process from the Activity Monitor. It can be force quit, but restarts almost immediately. Repeating the force quit does not seem to help.
I have referred this to Mozy support several times, but they appear unable to resolve the issue. This is unfortunate, as the backup itself is useful, and works well. I am therefore wondering if there is anything that I can do within OS X to bring this process under control? I was thinking of possibly setting up a cron job to start and stop the backup client process?
Any thoughts and suggestions would be of interest and gratefully received!
    Nigel

    Thanks for that.
Unfortunately, it seems my thinking was not quite the best idea, as I have now received the following advice from Mozy Support:-
"I spoke with on of our senior support agents about the idea of quiting the Mozy client when not needed and he told me if you were to do that, Mozy wont know when files are changed and so wont back them up when you run a backup. Even when you aren't running a backup the Mozy client is watching all of the files on the machine and noting when a file needs to be backed up.
If you like, however, I can still provide you with the commands to effectively quit the Mozy backup daemon and launch it on demand. Alternatively, if the older Mozy client was better on resources and works for you, by all means use that version instead. To avoid having to re-select all of your files while changing the Mozy client version, when you select Uninstall from the MozyHome icon in the menubar, make sure the checkbox for Keep settings and log files is checked.
I know the Mozy Mac engineers are working towards reducing the resource footprint as much as possible, but Mozy is first committed to provide the most advanced and feature rich products. As such there will be a performance degradation as subsequent versions are released and ran on legacy hardware."
So switching the daemon off is clearly not a good idea; and the implication of the other comment is that Mozy don't care how much processor their system uses. Having researched elsewhere, it seems that this problem has been identified a couple of years ago, and Mozy don't seem to have made any serious effort to resolve it. From my perspective, I just want a reliable backup, the other bells and whistles are not interesting, and I would have thought that other users of a budget product would have similar requirements. However, Mozy seem content to leave us out in the cold. Fortunately, there are now other similar products, and a recent review in Macworld identified one called CrashPlan which seems to offer similar prices to Mozy (or slightly less).
For the time being I have reinstated an old version of Mozy that did not give this trouble, but will be looking seriously at CrashPlan, as reviews seem quite favourable.

  • Online backup for eMac?  And what about Skype?

I recently had a bad crash. Had to do a clean install of OS X 10.4.11.  For some reason Carbonite won't serve the Mac community. . Anyone know of a good Mac alternative?  Also I lost Skype. Same question. What version of Skype will work with this old eMac?

    Hello, as far as Skype...
    http://mac.oldapps.com/skype.php?old_skype=32
And as far as online backup I really don't understand that wish, unless...
You have 20 MB/Sec Fiber Optic upload speed
You'r enot aware that a Firewire Drive will cost likely less than a couple of months of unlimited backup.
& there are free apps to backup or clone, which will leave you able to continue with your work within a minute or two...

  • Online backup which accepts a drive?

I have quite a bit of content, mostly HD video of the kids, some 600GB in total. I already backup with Time Machine to an external HDD and also do an occasional clone to a third HDD. But I am also running out of HD space on my iMac, so may redesignate the first EDD as spillover space. Hence, I would need a reconfigured backup solution, preferably one which does not consume any more USB ports or generate more heat in my study!
So online seems like the way to go, but my internet connection is slow, at about 300K upload, so uploading all that content would take forever.
I know there are some online backup systems that will accept a drove with content to start you off, Mimedia is one, but it is not yet properly Mac-compatible.
Are there any other services that would accept a hard copy of the initial material? Ideally, it would be UK based, but I can do US too if that is a better option.

    Hi,
    I'm currently trying Crashplan : http://b2.crashplan.com/
Unlimited space for 50$/yr, that's the cheapest I've found for a service of backup. There is other similar solutions for this price but this concerns synchronization only and most of them don't support externale drive
I don't have any issue so far with the bandwith or the software.

    Dear  MAC-Friends.
    PLEASE HELP ME.
I am extremely afraid to do something wrong - what will be a failure so I loose all the photos I had in my iphoto library before installing the Mountain Lion.
I have just installed the MOUNTAIN-LION and now I can´t use my Iphoto-programme without answering the following question:

Ok. Let me first ask you, do you have any backups of your files - for example, do you use Time Machine or any other backup system?
Next, quit iPhoto. In the Finder, go to your Pictures folder. Is there a file there called iPhoto.Library? How large is it? (If it doesn't show the size, click once on it, click cmd-I to see the information). If it's a healthy size (ie, several GB), then that should be your library, and you can double-click it to launch iPhoto. (The application will remember where your library is next time, you can just launch iPhoto normally).
If that's not the right file, check your Trash. Is there anything in there?
