Mac G3  Blue & White won,t boot anymore

Hi everyone
I havea a big problem and I hope someone can help me out.
I have a G3 Blue & White with
PCU:300 Mgz
Rams:896 MB
HDD:130 GB
I had Tiger installed on it and worked perfectly, but classic would not boot up because it would say that Mac OS 9.1 was not installed.
So I decided to copy the system folder from my OS 9.1 intall disk to my hard drive(big mistake).
Then I went on Preferences, Startup disk, and it showed the icons of Mac OS X Tiger and Classic 9.1.So I decided to put Classic as startup disk(bigger mistake)because now,my Mac won't boot.It keeps saying
"The system software on the startup disk only functions on the original media, not if copied on another disk.
Now even if I try to boot with my install disk,OS 9.1 or Panther or Tiger,it just won,t boot from the disk. There is that little window with ? in it.
Now I have a Mac that won't boot.
Please,can anyone help me out
Thank you
Mario

Mario:
I don't mind reformating my HDD and do a clean installation but I cannot boot no matter what i do.
This may be a problem, as you will need to be able to boot from both the OS 9 install disk and the Tiger install disk. If you are not able to boot it may be that you are having an issue with the optical drive. In any case, I will post some directions and we will see if you can manage to get it going. First we will do a complete low level format with the OS 9 installer, install and update OS 9 and then when that is working satisfactorily we will install and update Tiger. All of this, of course, is dependent on whether you can boot from the optical drive.
Format and Install OS 9
This process will completely erase everything on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure to Backup your User Folder and all third party apps you can't afford to lose
• Boot from your OS 9 install CD holding down C key.
• Go to Drive Setup and reformat your drive as Mac OS Extended (HFS+)
• Reinstall OS 9
• Update to 9.2.2: Mac OS 9: Available Updates
• Update your firmware
Once this is completed, you are ready to install Tiger.
Installation Process
• With computer shut down insert install disk in optical drive.
• Hit Power button and immediately after chime hold down the "C" key.
• Select language
• Open Installer and begin installation.
• Select installation option as Archive and Install. *This is important as you do not want to overwrite OS 9, which you just installed.*
• Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Optional: Check box to install X11 (Tiger and later) BSD Subsystems (Panther & earlier).
• Proceed with installation.
• After installation computer will restart for setup.
• After setup, reboot computer.
• Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
• Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
• Select First Aid in main panel.
• Click Repair Disk Permissions.
• Connect to Internet.
• Download and install Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo update (PPC) (Tiger).
• Repair Disk Permissions as previously.
• Go to Apple Menu > Software Update.
• Install all updates.
Computer may restart after updates.
• Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
• Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
• Select First Aid in main panel.
• Click Repair Disk Permissions.

  • Mac mini won't boot anymore

My Mac mini won't boot anymore. It's been running fine for months.
    It's running Leopard Server 10.5.2 Build 9C31
It starts to boot, I get the first spinning gear with the gray screen, then the blue desktop blinks, then a second spinning gear on a gray screen and it appears to hang (the gear stops spinning).
I booted off the install DVD, ran disk utility, repaired the HD, repaired the permissions: the behavior is the same.
Safe mode doesn't work (same hang as above).
    Single user mode does work.
I can connect to it via Server Admin while it appears hung.

Yes, it's been running Server since I purchased it.
I doubt the serial number is in use elsewhere: I purchased the 10-user version at a retail store in a sealed package and I've only installed it once.

Hi I tryed to boot my mac book and it won't boot, it goes on a white screen for about to min then a folder with a ? comes up! PLEASE HELP ME

    Hi...
Try here >  A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
First thing I would try is booting while holding down the Option key. If the drive is ok, you should see the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk and restart.
Unfortunately, 90% of the time, the ? on boot means the drive is failing or has failed

  • Won't boot anymore but in safe mode

My laptop won't boot anymore. I get a gray screen with a prohibition sign. Here's what I found so far:
If I boot in the verbose mode it gets stuck on something like Looking for boot device.
I zapped the PRAM. Didn't help.
I can boot in safe mode.
I used Disk Utility to check the drive and permisions. Everything ok.
I can't boot from the original Snow Leopard DVD. I press C, the drive spins then stops.
I reinstalled Snow Leopard from the safe mode. Didn't help.
In safe mode Safari is crazy slow. Firefox runs full speed.
    Any idea?

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
Unless you can boot from your installer DVD there's nothing you can do to reinstall OS X, so I'm not sure how you did reinstall as you said.
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
    1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

  • Powermac G5 1.8Ghz June 2004 won't boot anymore

    Hi all,
Past week i've bought a second hand PM G5. At first it seems to be all ok, but right now its not working anymore.
I've managed to install the OSX on the first evening i've had the PM G5. After installing evrything seemed to be fine. But after 30 minutes surfing on the internet, it froze. I had to give it an hard reset by holding down the power button.
After turning it of, it won't boot anymore. after a few times trying with 10 secconds between it, i unpluged the powercabel for 2 minutes. Wile turning it on after 2 minutes, it was booting , but it stopped booting after 1,5 minute and froze.. after hard resetting it, i've managed to boot it right. The OS seemed to be ok again, but after 5 till 10 minutes it froze again.
Right now it won't boot anymore... it starts (without the front light, this light only blinks fast once i turn it on, but after that no more. Sometimes it won''t even flash.
I've been buzzy replacing some components to get to know if it was a hardware fail. I've first replaced the PSU with two other PSU's from the PM G5, but won't do a thing.
The i've replaced the memory with 4 kind of difrent pairs, but won't do a thing either. At last i replaced the Logic Board, this won't even do a thing about it.
Of course i replaced the PRAM battery first, but also this won't help me.
I've tested it in AHT, but evrything was working well, according to AHT. I've managed to get the system log, but nothing scarry though here also, only some 122 errors some times. (download the system log here: http://www.mijnbestand.nl/Bestand-F4DDN66WLRCI.log )
I've reset al things possible like PRAM reset, PMU reset. Nothing seem to be working.
What can i do next to get this thing work?? I'm getting nut's here..
    Please help..
    Thanks a Lot
    MArtijn Snoek

Hi martijnsnoek, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Can you count the beeps or flashes?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1547
So, with the info you given, two things come to mind...
Bad solder joints around the RAM slots, try heating that area with a Hair Dryer for 3 to 5 minutes, then see if it starts.
If you can get it running, Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12381/temperature-monitor
    And/or iStat Pro...
    http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/
If you have any temps in the 70°C/160°F range, that's likely it.
BTW, have you blown the dust out of it since you got it?

  • Won't boot anymore after nvidia-xconfig

    Hey Guys,
Got a problem with my Arch Linux here, hope you can help.
Today I tried to install the official Nvidia Driver and BumbleBee following along the great Wiki on this topic.
Everything worked just fine and I also could run optirun gfxgear or somemthing like this.
I wanted to switch to the Nvidia Settings in the settings menu and it told me to configure my xconfig and restart x so I typed nvidia-xconfig in the terminal and it gave me an success output.
I restarted my system and now it hangs on the graphical thing I think. It won't boot anymore.
Hope you can help me out.
    Thanks alot
Edit: My Nvidia Card is a Nvidia GT 740M if this matters

No, I have a laptop with 2 graphic cards an intel hd4000 and a nvidia gt 740m.
I ran the Arch Linux installation well until I tried to get the nvidia gt working with bumblebee.
I followed the wiki of the bumblebee topic and it worked well. I wanted to switch into the nvidia settings and it told me my x isnt configured properly and I should type nvidia-xconfig and restart X.
After the restart it won't boot to the graphical interface anymore.
Hope this cleared up the things
Also I dont get any errors but it just wont load..

  • Re: Satellite C850 won't boot anymore - broken HDD

    Hello Folks,
    I bought a *Toshiba Satellite C850 - 1F2* with *+Windows 8+*.
After installing, upgrading to *+Windows 8.1+* and setting up everything, the whole machine worked pretty fine.
BUT since yesterday the laptop won't boot anymore!
When I turn it on, the HDD makes click and click and the system tries to boot from DVD, from USB, from HDD, from IPV4, from IPV6 and then it says, that there is no bootable device.
Unfortunately I wanted to make the +Windows 8 Restoration-/Rescue-DVDs+ this weekend!
    Huh!!!
Well, I still have an *+original Windows-7-DVD and license+*, which would be good as well (I used it the last years).
    *YET*, I cannot install *+Windows 7+*.
It says something like that, that +this system is not available for Secure Boot+.
    I read about "Secure Boot".
So I pressed F2, turned the laptop on and could with this reach the BIOS.
    It is a *+InsydeH20 Rev. 3.7+*.
*BUT*, when I go to "Boot Mode" I can only see, that this option is greyed and I cannot change from +UEFI Boot+ to +CSM Boot+.
Even the change of the HDD made no difference.
I put in my old HDD with Windows 7 installed (wich works in the other laptop), but the system won't boot, for it is +not suitable for Secure Boot+.
    *So, WHAT NOW?*
I mean, it cannot really be the Toshiba politics, that you need to throw away your laptop, if the HDD breaks, can it?
For I didn't create the Rescue-DVD, I have just my Windows 7 DVD and another HDD with installed Windows 7.
Do I need to buy another Windows 8 licence and another HDD, to install Windows 8 (suitable for Secure Boot) again?
Would it even work like that?
Or is there any chance to upgrade the BIOS, for that I can then change from UEFI Boot to CSM Boot?
Or is there any other chance, to use my other HDD with Windows 7, or at least a new clean HDD, on wich I then can install my Windows 7 OS?
I hope, that someone can give me any good advice, what to do now ... without throwing the Toshiba laptop away ;)
    Thanks in advance!

If the HDD died, in needs to be replaced.
If notebook is still covered by warranty, the HDD will be replaced free of charge. If warranty isnt valid, you will need to pay for the new HDD.
    I think this understandable.
_Now some facts about the Recovery disk._
If you did not create a recovery disk in the past, you could order the recovery medium on this page: http://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx
The recovery disk would install the Toshiba image and would set the notebook back to the same state like at the first day of purchase.
    _Regarding the Win 7 installation:_
Usually to install the non UEFI capable system, the secure boot needs to be disabled and boot mode needs to be set to CSM mode.
If this isnt possible you should update the BIOS but to do that you need an running Windows system (Win 8).

  • Satellite L40 18P won't boot anymore

    Hello folks,
my Satellite L40 18P won't boot anymore. All I get is the Power LED to go green. The DVD ROM drive blinks and I can open and close it - but that's it. Nothing else happens.
Any idea in the forum what I can do to get the notebook boot again ? Or please ask questions for additional details.
    many thanks, Johi 13

    Hi,
    wow, that was fast.
No, I can't see anything - the screen stays black. I do not hear the HDD start, neither do I hear the fan.
This behavior appeard for the first time yesterday evening.
Last activity was (if I remember correctly) closing the lid and sending the notebook to standby.
So far, I haven't tested it with an external monitor.
    thanks, Johi13

  • Btrfs: System won't boot anymore after unclean shutdown

    Hi,
I have a problem with my ArchLinux (kernel 3.19.2-1-ARCH).
I have my root partition as BTRFS and no /boot partition.
After an unclean shutdown the system won't boot anymore.
GRUB loads the kernel and the kernel starts but it hangs saying: Mounted /dev/sda3 on real root.
Then, I have to start a Live CD and do:
    btrfsck /dev/sda3
After that the system boots correctly.
I've tried adding fsck to the HOOKS in the mkinitcpio.conf file and in fact it tries to fsck the filesystem (but with BTRFS, fsck.btrfs doesn't work...)
    What can I do?
    Thanks

I'm also having this problem. I tried booting up the netinstall image to debug it, but I can't mount my btrfs volume from there either: mount just hangs. After a while, the kernel goes:
[...] INFO: task mount:612 blocked for more than 120 seconds.
    [...] Not tainted 3.19.2-1-ARCH #1
    [...] "echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message.

    [...] Not tainted 3.19.2-1-ARCH #1
    [...] "echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message.
From this post I guessed that I might just need to wait so that I could defrag the volume once it was mounted, but it's been hanging for over 15min now (the message above continues to come up periodically).
Like the OP in the thread I linked to above, my btrfs volume is inside an LVM volume (which is on dm-crypt). Don't know whether that's relevant.

  • Mac Pro Won't Boot Anymore

    Help
My Mac Pro (Quad Core Intel) will not boot anymore. Sor far I've started the machine in single user mode and ran.
    /sbin/fsck -fy
The file system came up clean.
    Then I typed exit.
Now the machine endlessly prints out the following message.
    disk0s2: 0xe00300005 (UNDEFINED).
It just prints this over and over. Any odea what to do?
    Wayne

Although I usually hear otherwise, the preferred fsck for an HFS filesystem is
    fsck_hfs
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man8/fsck_hfs .8.html
A boot into the Safe mode runs the correct fsck automatically, which is why a Safe boot sometimes fixes things.
However, I suggest booting into your Leopard DVD and after the first page, you will see a menu on the top of your screen. Select Utilities and DU and run a check on HD and permissions from there. This will perform the check on an unmounted volume, the proper way to check/fix an HD.

  • 10.2.8 on Blue&White won't let programs open-Need sophisticated help :)

I've posted about this and still continued to have trouble. If the super-initiated users out there would be willing to give me more advice, I'd be eternally grateful. I'm going to be as specific as I can to preemptively avoid confusion, as possible.
I ran a beige desktop G3 for years with OS 9.2.2. When it crashed (before I figured out how to get it back up with the help of this forum), I bought a stripped blue and white and 10.2(.8) from a local Mac store. I finally bit the bullet (my primary use is Pro Tools).
Between the beige's crash and receiving the blue and white in the mail, I was instructed how to start with apple-option-o-f restart commands and got the beige working again (with 10.2). It was fine. But since I had the blue and white with a faster processor, I was excited to get that going. So I took the hard drive (a 120 GB drive), my 320 mb of RAM (2 are clearly marked PC100, the third is marked "Hyandai" with no mark indicating of its PC100 or otherwise). But with this RAM and drive in the blue and white, the blue and white ran pretty smoothly. It was slightly glitchy though. Once in a while, a program would suddenly quit and there it was just a little buggy. But not bad. I decided rather than using the hard drive with the OS 10.2.8 installed on the beige, I would wipe the drive and install it on the blue and white to see if that solved the issue. That was the beginning of the end.
Any time I open a program, it immediately closes. The interesting thing is that if I persist, it opens a little longer and a little longer until, in the case of my internet browser, it works pretty normally. Other programs however just won't work and will not open. They act like they're opening and then they close. Sometimes the screen goes blue in between while it closes. But usually it just opens and closes leaving the desktop in its standard state.
Also, weirdly, I cannot drag anything. If I try to drag something within a folder or at all, it won't move. I tried to drag something out of the trash (that I hadn't put in the trash) and it wouldn't come out.
It's been suggested to me that this is all an issue of RAM. The reason I question that is that the computer ran basically very smoothly prior to me reinstalling the OS. I've tried wiping and reinstalling again with no improved results.
I'd really like to be able to use the blue and white and not have to reinstall everything in the beige. And I am looking into getting more RAM. But I'm a poor musician and since this very same computer just as it is ran pretty well before, it's hard to believe that's the issue.
So, again, the primary issues are that programs close as soon as you open, except with a few programs that if you keep trying to open them eventually stay open after repeated attempts (per startup). And the fact that nothing is draggable. If I could solve these problems, I'd be a very happy songwriter.
Any help you can offer is supremely appreciated.
And no- - I'm not going to upgrade my OS again right now- - can't afford it and I'm already regretting this upgrade a great deal. Would just like to get this one working if possible.
Also, I cannot get OS 9 running. At all. I have tried. If OS 10.x.x is present, no matter what the startup disk is, OS 10.x.x starts. And if I take OS 10.x.x off completely and leave only the OS 9 system folder, the computer won't boot. It's like OS X has ruined my computers.
Please help if you can. Thanks.

When you installed the drive(s) inside the B&W G3, what sort of disk carrier did you find inside the computer? Are the drives to be mounted next to each other or is there a "U" shaped bracket where one drive would be mounted above the other?
There is a machine specific issue with the B&Ws where the drives are to be mounted next to each other. This was the layout in the Rev 1 machines. There is a known corruption problem with just about any other hard drive except the one that originally came with the computer for the Rev 1 B&Ws. You can read more about the compatibility on <http://xlr8yourmac.com>. With these Rev 1 machines, the only real solution is to install a third party drive controller in a PCI slot.

  • Treo 800w won't boot anymore

For the last few weeks my treo 800w has been having random problems with shutting off and then not wanting to boot or requiring a hard reset to boot again. It now won't boot even doing the hard reset procedure. Also the led doesn't come on when it is plugged in anymore. It comes up to a blue screen with small white boxes in the upper left when it comes on after trying the hard boot. Any ideas what went wrong with it ?
Post relates to: Treo 800w (Sprint)

I would bring it in to your local Sprint store to see if they can fix it or replace it under your insurance plan.

  • G3 Blue/White won't start up with an Icon error on screen

I just booted up my G3 Blue White for the first time since 2 years ago after I brought PB to use. However, since booted up. I can hear the chime noise and then Apple Icon (Dark Grey Apple with light Grey in the background) for a couple of sec before an error Icon on the screen showing as a circle with a single strike (diag) in the circle (same colour as Apple Icon and background) and won't go any further to run. Either batteries is flat or what ever the error is. What should I do.. Leave my mac running until batteries is fully charge but then. What about bios as this will be gone too. Is there a way to recover it?
Help help help. I would like this G3 to act as server.

B&W G3 has non-chargeable 3.6V Lithium battery. A good tutorial concerning batteries is found HERE. Have you zapped PRAM?
The icon you see could also indicate a kernel panic. Have you got your original OS X installation disc?
