Mac G4 upgrading

Hello everybody,
I've wanted a MAC for quite some time now ever since I've owned an iPod for which I'd like to develop software. However any of the newer macs and macbooks were too expensive for me. Lucky as I got, my uncle wanted to give me and old Powermac G4 that he didn't need anymore. I'm not sure which model it is, but from what he says it's probably a model from 2000-2001. I did some research on the hardware, and came to the conclusion that I'd like to upgrade it. However, never having worked with mac's before, I am not completely certain about what is upgradable, and which exact hardware I should use. What I'd like to upgrade is;
The RAM
The GPU (I'm not sure if the G4 even has PCI options, but that's why I'm asking)
The CPU
I would be grateful for any information regarding compatibility and product names (Price and speed taken into account). Please note that I do not live in the US, and as such do not have access to shops such as amazon. But product names will do.
Thanks in advance!

Thank you for your reply.
Please forgive me for the fact that I continue to reply to a topic that is actually posted in the wrong forum. I ensure you that any new topic I will start is going to be in the right topic.
Your previous reply (for which I thank you) cleared up a couple of things;
-I now (generally, at least) know what kind of processor I should use
-I now know which OS I should use
-I know that the RAM I've got laying around might work
-I know that the HDD's I've got laying around will probably work
You can imagine how grateful I am for this information. However, I have one final question. I still am not sure if I can upgrade the GPU. I think I know why you can't say this, because I believe, (correct me if I'm wrong) that not all G4 models offer options for upgrading the GPU. Besides the very useful information i have already recieved, I would really like to get a bit of clearance on that.
Post scriptum: I have no intentions on installing any other operating systems on the G4 besides any Mac OS software, since I run a PC with a quad core 2.2 GHz, 4GB Ram, 1GB GPU, etc. On which I currently run Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Vista and Windows 7. So it's not necessary to stress it any more than just running Mac OSX on it
Thanks!

  • Windows Vista Machine Can No Longer Connect to Mac Following Upgrade

Before: Windows Vista machine with 6 drive letters mapped to the 6 hard drives in my Mac Pro running 10.5.8.
After: Mac Pro upgraded to 10.6. Now the Vista machine cannot connect to any of the drive letters, nor can it open the Mac Pro by browsing -- the Mac Pro shows up, but cannot be opened. A second Windows machine also cannot open any shares on the Mac Pro.
I have checked all of the settings in Network on the Mac Pro and they look fine. Does anyone have any ideas for things to check?

I was able to see the other Windows XP computer and begin to connect. I was then presented with a login screen. I tried using the usual user name and password - no luck. I then formatted the user name as as follows:
    user name: computer name\user name
    password: as normal
And it worked. Specifically in my case:
    user: cwy-pln2152\administrator
    password: planning
This is what worked for me your mileage may vary.

  • Hello, can't get my mac to upgrade to latest versions of quicktime, itunes or any other os

Hello, can't get my mac to upgrade to latest versions of quicktime, itunes or any other os

The latest OS that you can run is 10.5.8. That is as far as Power Mac machines can go.
The latest Quicktime, iTunes, etc., must be both OS X 10.5.8 AND Power Mac (PPC) compatible.
This is the last OS update for your machine:

iTunes 10.6.3 requires OS X 10.5.8 and is the last update for iTunes on a PPC machine:

  • Mac/Win upgrade?

Can someone please tell me how the Mac/Win upgrade works?  Can I install one copy on a Mac and one on Windows with the same $299 license? If so, would one get one serial number that works on both platforms? I heard that you get two seats.  If I install one on a Mac and the other on the same Mac with bootcamp for WIndows, does that use up my twp seats or does that just count as one since its on the same computer and can not be used by two people?

    Cheers
My Mac arrived yesterday, so I put the DVD in (it's a download only version, rather than a shipped box) and there didn't seem to be a Mac installer. In sheer naiveity even tried running setup.exe (!) but no joy.
Other info I've read since does seem to imply that this rep was wrong. Does anyone else know more about the process, or, if the rep was right, how I go about installing from that DVD?
    Cheers - Mac noob...

I'm stucked on APPLE evolution bar when I restarted my Mac after upgrade to Yosemite. I Can't access on my computer.

    Good Question.
I downloaded Yosemite a while ago, but didn¹t install it because it would
knock out several applications such as Solitaire till Dawn But finally
when some apps wouldn¹t work with my current version of Safari I thought I
would upgrade Safari but they wouldn¹t work with the OS I was using so
suddenly I had no Safari and was worse off than before. So I bit the bullet
and upgraded to Yosemite with the earlier version I already had. Not pleased
when iPhoto didn¹t work, and it also coincided with an national email outage
here in Australia by the major carrier so no email either.
Experience has taught me that it gets sorted out in the end but in the
    meantime...
    And the lesson is [

Any Mac introduced before Lion was released can run Snow Leopard, including the mid-2001 iMacs. So you can still get a current-generation Mac that runs Rosetta & use AppleWorks.
That's actually not true. Snow Leopard will only run on Intel Macs. The situation is this :
Any Mac capable of running Snow Leopard OR EARLIER will be able to run AW - Lion is the first OS that can't.
PPC Macs will run as far as Leopard 10.5.8 - they should have 1GB RAM minimum, but can run with less RAM for Tiger. They will all run AppleWorks.
All but the latest Intel Macs will run Snow Leopard and therefore Rosetta and therefore AW too.
However, current iMacs that come with Lion preinstalled can have 10.6 installed on a separate partition (must be 10.6.6 or later), to run Rosetta.
The current generation of MacBooks, and Air, cannot have 10.6 installed and therefore cannot run AW.
I don't know what the situation is with the latest Mac Pros.

  • How can I get my back up on my mac after upgrading to Yosemite?

    Hey everyone!
Before upgrading to Yosemite I made a Time Machine back up on a external hard disk.
After the upgrade to Yosemite was done I started with the setting-screen like anyone else would. When the Migration Assistant-screen came up I selected my external hard disk with my time-machine back up on it. Unfortunately Migration Assistant wasn't able to put the back up on the computer because apparently there was not enough space.
23gb to less or something. So I deselected a few maps in order to get under that amount and tried again. Nothing happened and the same message: not enough space.
So now I am stuck with a empty mac without any of my previous documents, music, etc.. What should I do? Should I fully format my mac?
FYI: my mac consists out of an 80 GB Solid State SATA Drive and a 128 GB Solid State SATA Drive.
The back-up my time machine made on my 1TB external hard disk is 131,5 GB big.

  • How to reconnect to .Mac after upgrading to Leopard?

I upgraded my iMac (20". mid-2007) to Leopard last night. Since then, I cannot connect to .Mac via the System Preferences. I CAN connect via the web, but I need to connect via System Preferences in order to synchronize my calendars correctly.
Have tried resetting the .Mac password several times. Have tried entering both my login name only and [email protected]
Error is: Unknown validation error - Your .Mac member name or password may be invalid. Please enter a different name or password.
There was a previous thread on this, which said "answered", but it really was not answered. Help!

  • Network can't see my Mac after upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8.2

After upgrading to ML 10.8.2 (coming from Lion), the network (another mac and an iPad) can't see my Macbook-pro.
Using a network scanner (Fing on iPad), my Macbook is not there, and in the same way all the other services from Macbook-pro (such as Internet sharing, Filemaker sharing, ...) don't work.
My Macbook-pro is regularly connected to the right network and has a proper IP address (192.168.1.32 with 192.168.1.1 being the router, ...33 the other mac and so on). Also, my Macbook-pro perfectly reaches both other LAN devices and the internet.
I've tried disabling Firewall but nothing changed. I havn't got any antivirus nor security programs running.
    Anyone experiencing the same issue?

Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. The purpose of this test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Wifi problem with Mac after upgrade to Mavericks

I just upgraded to Mavericks but something wrong with my wifi.
i can get internet through LAN link from Airport but not through wifi even i can receive an IP address
i tried connect to hotspot with my iphone5s and it works.
Other devices can use wifi just fine through Airport, just not my Mac using Mavericks
    In conclusion,
Airport should be fine because my other devices works.
Mac wifi should be fine too because i can connect using hotspot.
so why it's not working when i connect Mac to Airport?

I was having problems connecting to Wifi with my Macbook Pro (!2010), after upgrading to Mavericks. I was on the phone repeateadly with AT&T because I have Uverse. Testing everything (channels, signal strength) and had techs come out to check the line, ports, switches, etc. When I hardwired the Mac into the Uverse router, it worked fine. This rulled out any problems with the line in.
I considered getting a repeater but then I read that repeaters are not really good and it is better to reconfigure a router to act as an access point on the network. Plunked down about $80 for a Belkin AC750 router at Best Buy. In the setup it has an option to set it up as an access point only. Clicked that, connected it to my Motorola NVG510 Uverse modem and then connected to the Belkin router from my Mac. Voila!  It's been a solid 11+ Mbs ever since (my plan maxes at 12Mbs). Connection is still solid and life if good even though it ***** to plunk down another $80 for a second router. But it was worth it just to get rid of the headaches.
I think the wifi capabilities of the Motorola NVG510 modem are the cause of a lot of problems with AT&T Uverse issues, particularly for Mac owners. I think it was also causing my Airport Expresses to drop occasionally.... Few minutes of music then drop... music drop.... All gone now.
I don't know if you are on Uverse but if so, I highly recommend configuring a second router as an acces point (it can be any old router you still might have - the setup is just a bit trickier because you have to do it manually).
    Good luck.

  • 2009 Mac Pro upgrading graphics card to GTX 680 mac. What is the best version of AE and PP and OSX to have?

    Hello,
    I have a 2009 Mac Pro 4.1
    Mac OSX version 10.6.8
    Processor - 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory - 24GB
Graphics Card - ATI Radeon HD 4870
I use After Effects and Premiere Pro daily for my work. I am not too technically minded. I want to update and improve my machine as much as possible and am thinking of buying an SSD drive to replace my current start up disk. I also am thinking about getting the GTX 680 mac version graphics card. I have read many online discussions regarding OpenCL and CUDA, many discussions with mixed feelings about the improvements the 680 gives an older Mac Pro - some people say it is amazing others say the improvements seem minimal or worse.
What I want to know is if I purchase the SSD and 680 graphics card what is the optimal OSX - 10.8 or 10.9? and what is the optimal versions of AE and PP to have - CS6 or CC? Also what settings and what additional drivers would I need to consider?
I contacted an independent authorised mac reseller and he thought it was a bad idea to put a new graphics card and get the latest OSX in an old machine and tried to sell me a used 2010 Mac Pro, but I think it would be more cost effective to get the SSD and 680 instead, it's just I read the occasional horror story on a forum and I worry about making the wrong choice, I rely on my Mac Pro to make a living!
    Thanks in advance

Thank you for the valuable information Eric, I think I will go with the 680 but I understand that it wont be fully utilised on my old Mac Pro.
Perhaps I will replace my startup/applications hard drive with a 480GB SSD. My other 3 bays are full with 3 x 2TB Hard drives that have media on them so I have no spare room for a dedicated SSD drive for AE cache. But could I put a 250GB SSD into one of the PCI-E slots using something like - SSD SuperSpeed Upgrade Kit for Apple Mac Pro 2008 2009 2010 2012 | eBay
Would this be my best solution? Is it a relatively simple installation, does anyone have any experience of a similar setup?
cc_merchant, thank you for the reply, I am aware you have to pay monthly payments for CC, that is no problem.

  • Iphone videos will no longer play on mac after upgrade

Hi, I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion and since doing so, all the video's that I took with my iphone and moved to my mac (everything that was on my mac already prior to the upgrade), no longer work. I basically lost all videos of the first 6 months of my daughters life following the upgrade and I would like to know how I can get the videos' to work again or if this is lost for good?

    Hi, Slumdog13.
Where did these videos come from? Did you download them directly from Nokia Suite or did you sync your mobile device and got these videos from there?
What is the format of the old videos that you are trying to play? Have you also tried to sync/transfer new videos and then play them? If yes, have you encountered the same error message?
Have you also tried transferring these videos from the Nokia Suite to your Desktop and check if you'll be able to play them?
You can also try to update the Nokia Suite to the latest version "Nokia Suite 3.8" or uninstall and then re-install it. Just visit the link provided below:

  • Power Mac G5 upgrade question.

Does anybody know if the G5 can be transformed into an Intel system in order to upgrade to Lion?
I really don't want to have to buy a new Mac.

I did contact Apple and they said pretty much what you discussed in your reply.  They also suggested I
upgrade to Leopard which would allow me to upgrade other software I currently have on the computer.
    Thanks again.
