Mac G5 + Dell Monitor

Hi, I have a G5 and tried hooking my Dell 2407WFP monitor to it & the font is extremely fuzzy. This is especially true in programs like Quark. I have it at the highest resolution w/ font smoothing set for flat screen (although I tried every setting) and it is still blurry. Are there any fixes for this??

So you're running it at 1920 x 1200 and it's still fuzzy, right? The first thing I'd check is to see what revision of the monitor you have. It should be listed on the back of the monitor, or you can likely find it in one of the on-screen menus. If it's an early revision (such as an A00 or A01) then the fuzzy text and banding in color gradients is a known issue. It's the primary reason I purchased a 2405FPW even though the 2407 was right around the corner. Reportedly, the A02 and A03 revisions of the 2407 are much better (if not completely fixed) with regard to the fuzzy text and banding. You may need to contact Dell to get your monitor updated or replaced if you have one of the early models.

  • Mac Mini + Dell Monitor = Strange fan behaviour.

    Hello all,
I bought a Mac Mini just over a month ago.
Whenever I use Front Row, watch any video full screen, or do any similar none intensive task, the fan spins at an alarming (not to mention very noisy) rate.
After calling Apple support I was told the device should be silent and forwarded to a local repair centre.
Three days later I receive a phone call from the repair centre to tell me the problem is fixed.
Upon trying the Mac Mini at home, I discover the problem remains – the fan spins up whenever I use Front Row or play a video (web or local).
Calling the repair centre again they ask me to come in so they can look again. While I am at the repair centre they try the machine and is seems to work perfectly with their setup – no fan noise while using Front Row. The technician suggest I try to fault find to see if any of my devices are causing the problem.
The result? It seems that my year-and-a-bit old Dell 20” LCD monitor is to blame. When I play the video without it connected the fan does not spin up, it remains silent. Repeating the exact same procedure (opening Front Row and playing a video) while it is connected results in an over-active fan.
I've also tried another 19” LCD monitor and the fan still spins up.
Trying the monitor/no monitor test numerous times have produced the same results. When either of the two monitors is connected and I play a video the fan spins up to an alarming rate. When no monitor is connected, the fan remains silent.
I'm at a bit of a loss here as in the repair shop it seemed to work fine (think it was a 17' NEC monitor in the shop).
Has anyone encountered this before? Does anyone have a solution?
    Matt

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
At the sort of resolutions involved, I wouldn't have expected you to experience much different in the way of fan behavior across 17-20" displays, but there is no doubt that the higher the resolution, the harder the mini has to work since the GPU is an integrated unit which relies in part on CPU cycles and entirely on system RAM. Having used a 19" screen (same 1280x1024 native resolution as a 17") and played Front Row content on an Intel mini, I can say that I haven't had the same experience, but it's not necessarily surprising that you get different behavior when the display is connected as when it is not, because with no display the mini has much lower video processing overhead.
I can't help but wonder if you were to take your Dell display to the service provider, whether they would be able to determine that it caused the same fan behavior as you experience with another Mac mini. That would be the telling next step I'd want to take in this situation to nail down whether it is related to the display, and if so whether resolution settings, or not.
And that is also in part a test you can try with the Dell display. Boot the mini normally, then reduce the screen resolution to something pretty basic like 800x600. If the fan still spins up then it's not a resolution issue, but you can then move to using Activity Monitor to begin to check what (if anything) is loading the CPU.
One other thought - since taking the system to the service provider means it is undergoing an SMC reset with each trip (and the one back), try an SMC reset yourself to see if it changes behavior, even if only temporality. If an SMC reset seems to temporarily fix it, but the problem returns, then the mini is likely faulty, but you can then return to the service provider with that information to assist them in their troubleshooting.
To reset the SMC on an Intel mini:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    -Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.

  • Dell monitors connected with YPbPr instead of RGB

When I connect Mountain Lion Mac to Dell monitors with miniDP-DisplayPort cable, Mac uses YPbPr color instead of RGB.
When I calibrate my monitor with x-rite or datacolor, it shows terrible results.
Lion has not a same problem. And miniDP-DVI cable in Mountain Lion has not a problem, too.
I googled about it, finally found the solution. http://embdev.net/topic/284710
But Apple has to fix this problem.

Though, I have a Dell monitor and it allows you to choose between YPbPR and RGB in the on-screen menu.  Are you sure yours doesn't allow this too?

  • I just purchased a new mac mini and would like to use my old dell monitor. I tried a HD to VGA adapter converter,it plugs in, but nothing shows on the monitor. Any suggestions? Thanks

I just purchased a new mac mini and would like to use my old dell monitor. I tried a HD to VGA adapter converter,it plugs in, but nothing shows on the monitor. Any suggestions?

What do you mean by "HD to VGA adapter converter"?
Do you mean have an HDMI to VGA adapter connected the the Mini's HDMI port?
Or maybe you plugged n the the included HDMI to DVI adapter and then connected a DVI to DVI adapter?
In either case that will not work since VGA is analog and the Mini's HDMI port is digital only.
You need to purchase a mini displayport to VGA adapter. It plugs into the Mini's Thunderbolt port.

Make sure you get a name--brand one. I purchased some el cheapo, no-name ones and they did not work

  • Will a Mac Mini connect to my old Dell monitor?

As my old Powermac G5 is seriously out of date, I think I'm going to buy a mac mini as I have limited space for a huge imac.
However, I want to use my old Dell monitor but I'm not sure if they two will connect. The monitor is 8 years old and has one of the connectors with the two screws either site. Is there an adapter with the mini?

Yes, you can purchase a VGA to HDMI adapter or VGA to Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort. If you still want to use your G5 (I still do) then you could use a KVM switch to share a monitor, keyboard and mouse between the two.

  • Problem with a Dell Monitor - stopped working yesterday, just a flashing orange light. Monitor or Mac Mini issue?

I've been using an old Dell monitor with my Mac Mini ever since I got it, however yesterday evening my monitor stopped working - however I'm not sure whether the issue is with the monitor or the Mac Mini. It just doesn't seem to respond when I try to bring the Mac Mini out of sleep. I can hear that the Mini is responding to the keyboard - I hear the right noise for pressing return on the password box without entering anything.
I've made sure all the cables are plugged in properly (power & connection to the Mini), but all I'm getting is a flashing orange light on the monitor.
I don't have anything else to test the monitor on, nor do I have access to another monitor to plug into the Mac Mini - I only have an old iBook G4, so don't have the right adaptors to plug the VGA from the monitor into that.
So before I run out and buy a new monitor, what is the best way to determine where the problem lies.

Hi, I've actually never had any issues waking this monitor from sleep, this is the first time that it has been unresponsive and I've had it for years - probably over 10! (E151FP) so probably overdue for replacement.
To be honest I'd rather not just switch the Mini off unless it's a last resort given that other than the lack of a picture everything else seems to be working ok - still hearing all the normal noises of Skype, Mail and TimeMachine etc.

  • Mac Mini with Dell Monitor

I just bought my dad a Mac Mini and gave him my big Apple Monitor (can't remember size but bigger than a small TV:). Well dad says the monitor is too big and wants to use his Dell monitor. I called support and for the first time I couldn't understand the technician, his accent was too strong (I really hope Apple hasn't outsourced their support). Anyway, what I got from the conversation had something to do with a VGA adapter to a DVI? I have looked at the other topics on using non-Mac displays but they aren't really on point. Any help is appreciated:)
    Thanks
    Lisa

If the Dell monitor has a VGA connector (also referred to sometimes as 'analog'), then all he will need in order to use it with the mini is the DVI/VGA adapter that is included with the mini and therefore should be in the box. I use a Dell display with one of my minis this way and it works just fine.
If the Dell has a DVI connector (which is digital) then it will plug straight in without the adapter.
Almost all computer displays in the past 10 years and more use one or other of these connector types - most are VGA.

  • Do mac minis work with regular dell monitors?

I need to kno this because i am thinking of buying a mac and want to kno if it will work with my monitor i have for windows. And if so, will it be worth it?

Yes, Dell monitors work in perfect harmony with Mac Minis. I used to have an old Dell monitor (left over from our previous PC), and when I used the adapter that comes with the Mac Mini to convert it to the appropriate formate (DVI or VGA or something), it still looked sharp. So its definitely worth it. Plus you save money buying a new monitor.

  • How do I get the camera on my Dell Monitor to work with my Mac Mini?

ow do I get the camera on my Dell Monitor to work with my Mac Mini?

If the camera registers itself as a standard UVC compliant Cameras (UVC = USB Video Class) then the Mac will recognise and use it with nothing else needed as the Mac has a built-in UVC driver. If it does not act as a UVC type device then you could look at the following third-party drivers.
    http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/
    http://www.ioxperts.com/dcam.html
I have seen some reports suggesting that at least some Dell monitor models will act as UVC compatible webcams and should 'just work'.

  • Dell Monitor P2415Q

    I have a P2415Q monitor with rMBP 13", Mid 2014, OS 10.10.2, Intel Iris and a mDP/DP cable.
Any resolution above 1920x1080 is marked as "(low resolution)" and looks that way. It makes no difference if I don't use MST or do. When I use MST, it only works with
Secondary. When I try to select MST primary, I get a message from the monitor, "No Valid MST detected. Switch to secondary?"
This is what I see with MST Secondary:
Any ideas how to resolve this?

Yup. Absolutely. I think it's Displayport or MiniDisplayport for your  13" macbook pro (early 2013), so just buy the correct cable,  plug 'er in and you should be good to go. Apparently. it even handles audio out via the displayport, so, if you wanted to connect it up to your tv set, no problem-just get an adapter or a Displayport to HDMI cable, and that's it.  I have a slightly different model of Dell monitor, 2713HM and it works just fine with my Mac Pro  (2010) and I'm liking the extra desktop space (used to have a 20" cinema display a while back)...still, pretty good monitor. ..
    well, that's it

  • Connecting my MacBook Pro to Dell Monitor

Hi, I have a Dell E228WFP 24 inch monitor and I have connected it to my MacBook Pro (October 2013, Non-retina, 13 inch) with a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter, and another adapter off eBay, which plugs into the VGA cable that is in the back of the Dell monitor. When I turn the monitor on, the screen remians black, then the monitor goes into power save mode. The Mac can find the monitor, and the Mac says the monitor is working perfectly.
The monitor goes into power save no matter if I put it on Auto Detect or Digital imput, or Analog input.
    Please help!

Searching on Amazon, I find the monitor has HDMI.  a Mini-Displayport to HDMI adapter from the Apple Store is a much better choice than any VGA adapter.  Also your machine will support audio over HDMI if there is audio on the monitor.  If not, that's immaterial for that monitor:
    http://www.amazon.com/Dell-E228WFP-Widescreen-1680x1050-resolution/dp/B001BKR5D8
Anyway, HDMI carries the full digital signal.  So does DVI.  I for one prefer HDMI since it is less likely to fail connecting.

  • G5 DVI to VGA Dell Monitor Connection problems, need help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    hello,
I'm running two dell monitors both of which were connected via DVI to my g5 quad dual dvi. My tv broke and I'm using one of my monitors to connect the cable boxes HDMI input to the dells DVI input, it works great.
My problem is that i still want to run two monitors from my mac and still be able to switch channel sources from the Dells source button allowing me to switch from TV to Mac. Since I took up the dvi port on one of my monitors to connect to the cable box via HDMI, I have a free DVI cable. I purchased a tiny converter that allowed to change one end of the free DVI cable to VGA. I used this method to connect the cable to my g5's dvi port and the configured end to the VGA port on the monitor with no luck.
The Dell monitor does not pick up any signal and just goes to sleep as if my computer does not exist. The TV works fine and I'm able to switch sources. Please note that I'm not using the DVI-VGA adaptor that came with my g5 and don't know if this would make a difference. If it does, how do i set this up because this adaptor is like 5 inches long.
Does the adaptors DVI end need to be connected to the back of the g5 or does the VGA end need to be connected to the monitor or does it not matter. I need a longer dvi-vga cable as well, do they make them. This all depends if the problem actually is that that I'm not using the DVI-VGA cable that came with my mac to connect to the monitor in the first place.
Can anyone help me out here. I'm using the Dell 2208WFP Ultra Sharp.

    Bad adapter?
The G5 ports are DVI-I. Any good DVI-I to VGA adapter should be fine.

  • How do i connect a dell monitor u2715h to my macbook pro late 2013?

How do I connect a Dell monitor U2715H to my MacBook Pro. The only drivers provided are for Windows.

THanks, James. My daughter suggested I just plug in my new monitor since Macs often don't need as much driver support as Windows machines. Sure enough, that's all I had to do.

  • Connecting MacBook Pro to a dell monitor

Having a little dilemma trying to figure out how to connect a dell monitor to my MacBook Pro. (Mid 2012)   Dell monitor has a dvi-d connection. Not sure which apple connector I need and if I need to purchase a double ended male male dvi-d cable. Help!

    Hi,
I am sure your problem must have been sorted out by now, but for all current and future buyers for the dell U2414H and having an apple computing device, mac, macbook, pro etc, the monitor works perfectly out of the box when I connected with a mini DP(thunderbolt port) to HDMI output (U2414H), it just ran out of the box, without any issues, it even worked simply for my bootcamp windows. So no need to fret before purchasing one, simply go ahead and get it, it's the Monitor with most appealing edge giving you only a screen to view at, I was also considering between the U2412M and the U2414H, I think I've made a great choice.
    Cheers,
    N
