Mac G5's 2nd Internal Drive disappears

Hi,
I have a G5 with 2 internal drives,
one is called STARTUP and has apps, etc.
The 2nd is/was called MEDIA and had lots of documents
and for some reason has disappeared from my desktop
I did a restart and used Disk Utility but I am not finding it
Any suggestions please?...thank you

Hi Evan Kreeger1-
If DU doesn't see it that is usually not a good thing.
Before panicking you might want to open the Mac up and check all of the connections to the drive.

  • Cannot move files to trash from 2nd internal drive

I have waht appear to be a profile specific issue that prevents me from moving files from a 2nd drive in my machine to the trash when using my standard profile.
I to to my 2nd internal drive and when I drag a file to the trash it asks me "Are you sure you want to delete "xxxxx.jpg"  The item will be deleted immediately, You can't undo this action. If I click OK the item is delted and does not do to the trash. It aks liek is is an external drive, not an internal drive
But when I delete a file from my Macintosh HD drive the item goes to the trash as it should.
If I log into my Admin account, the files from the second internal drive moves to the trash normally. I have set my normal login from standard to admin and it stil has the issue, I also have run disk utility and disk warrior and rebuilt the directory, but it has not changed the problem
    ANy ideas?

The drive's invisible Trashes folder might be corrupt. Try deleting it by entering this Terminal command:
    rm -rf /Volumes/drivename/.Trashes
Then unmount the drive and remount it.
Make sure you have the data on the drived backed up. Mistyping that Terminal command by putting even a space in the wrong place can delete everything on it.

  • Internal Drives Disappeared- Help

G4/1.0 DP MDD with four drives filling the internal bays. The two in the upper bay, one with the OS, show up fine. The two in the lower bay, under the DVD drive, which were showing up fine after installing 10.4.7 about ten days ago have suddenly disappeared. They don't show up under disk utility or System Profiler either. Booting with Disk Warrior, one of the drives appears on the list and DW says it is shown on the desktop, but it's not. Repaired the directory, but still nothing. Finder prefs are to show all drives.
I repaired permissions many times, zapped Pram, replaced battery, disconected the drives, checked the jumpers and reseated the connections and all seems fine. About three times over the last year, using 10.3.8 - 10.4.4 - 10.4.7, these drives disappeared temporarily, but returned upon a restart. Now they seem to be gone for good, but there must be something else I can do to try and get these drives to show up/mount on the desktop. Any ideas?? My next step is to remove the drives and put them in cases to check them, but I have a feeling that the drives are OK and there's something else going on here. I think the bus that these drives are attached to are slower than the main bus, but I only use these drives for backup and fortunately most of the info is old and not important. Still, I'd like to solve this puzzle. BTW all other types of external drives, Firewire, SCSI, USB are all working fine and I disconnected everything peripheral from the CPU to troubleshoot.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    MacScott

I had the exact same issue and did nearly all of what
you did, which are the typical troubleshooting
    procedures.
This worked for me: replace the PATA cable with a
fresh one that is NOT a cable select IDE cable. The
cable select IDE has a little sliver cut from a
segment of the ribbon that makes the driver CS no
    matter what the jumper setting.
I have no idea why this worked but it did. I have
    not had a problem since.
Thanks, but I'm a little confused. So a new cable for each drive or are there doubles? Is this a universal cable Mac/pc? Maybe the cable that came with the drive (that I probably threw away)? Do you know the link of a supplier? Would any Apple store have these??
Knowing why this worked would relieve a little anxiety. Do these cables go bad just sitting in the cpu?
Anyway I googled PATA and I'm still not sure if I'd know the difference between a cable select and a non CS. I'll continue my research.
    Thanks again!
Hmmm, swapping the drives. Maybe I'll try this before I swap the cables.
    Thanks,

  • Mac Pro 2.66 internal drives in a Mac Pro 64bit i7?

Is it possible to just unmount my internal drives from my workhorse Mac Pro 2.66 Dual Core Intel Xeon tower and mount in my new 8C Xeon 2X2.4g 64bit tower?
    Thanks in advance!

It's not clear if your workhorse is an original, or at least early Mac Pro and you new Mac Pro is the 2010 version, but if so, be aware that the drive sleds the internal drives are in are not the same. I don't know what would happen if you tried that swap but I doubt it'd be good for the new Mac Pro.
The drive itself could be transferred from the old sled to the new sled and it would fit but, if the new Mac Pro is, indeed, a 2010, it won't boot because 10.6.4 is the minimum OS needed. You could, however, use it for Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant purposes.

  • Can TM back up to a 2nd internal drive in MacPro?

All the help files include info on backing up to external drives but I haven't seen anything on backing up to an internal drive in a MacPro. I suspect it will work, but just need a Yes or No.
Set up is MP with two HDs, one for system & one for TM.
    TIA

yes, it will work. I've been doing it ever since Leopard came out on both of my mac pros. much faster and more convenient than using an external.

  • How do I setup the scratch disk on a 2nd internal drive?

I am having difficulty setuping up a scratch disk on a 2nd internal hard drive for final cut pro X. When I go to file/import the second drive is not visible. Any ideas....
    Thanks!

I had the same issue with my iMac and 2 internal disks: system & applications on 256GB SSD, another 2TB internal hard disk that was meant to store media, and Final Cut Pro X 10.0.3 just wouldn't see my 2TB internal disk. Only the SSD would appear in the Event Browser.
I solved it by checking read/write permissions on the hard disk. I have 2 users: one with admin rights which I used to initially set up the iMac and install software (including FCP X), and another user with standard rights for everyday use (including FCP X production).
My 2nd user only had read permissions on the 2nd internal hard disk. I selected the disk, Command-I, changed permissions to read/write, and when I launched FCP X again, both volumes would show up now. Issue solved!
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I install Tiger on a 2nd Internal Drive?

As nice as some of Leopard's features are, it's too bug ridden for me in its current state. It lives on my primary drive, and I would like to do a fresh install of Tiger (retail) on my second internal drive. How would I go about accomplishing this? Should I press C when booting with the Tiger disc in the drive? I'm assuming that I'll be able to access all my files and applications on the Leopard drive when done. Is that a safe assumption?

So, when I boot off the install DVD it will give me the choice as to which drive to install to? I will remember the clone thing for the next OS release, that's for sure...
<EDIT>Found the answer to that question here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5490253&#5490253.

  • Unable to install on 2nd internal drive

I have 2 internal hard drives, the startup drive only has 19 GB capacity and only 1 GB left so I am trying to change the startup to my other internal drive which is 150GB. I tried to intall the OS onto the 150GB drive by restarting with installation cd and holding C, but it says that it cannot boot from that drive. Can anyone help me with this problem?

You can use a backup program like SuperDuper and clone your small drive onto the larger drive. It works flawlessly for me.

  • Installing Windows XP on a 2nd internal drive

    Hi,
I'm attempting to install Windows XP on another internal hard drive on my new Mac Pro. So I run the Boot Camp assistant and select the drive in bay 2 - which is completely empty. I select the option to "Erase disk and create a single partition for Windows". I then insert my Windows XP install disc and restart. But when it gets to the Windows installer, I don't know with drive to select! I don't want to erase my Mac OS X drive by mistake. It's not clear at all which drive i should choose. Neither of them mention "Bootcamp" and it claims both drives have partitions which are "unrecognized".
Any suggestions on how to determine in the Windows installer which drive to use?
    I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.2.

    I found a solution.
I went into Disk Utility and formatted the 2nd drive. 1 partition. FAT32. MBR partitioning scheme. I then called it "WINDOZE".
In Boot Camp, I then selected the option to simply "Start the Windows Installer" and selected the drive in Bay 2. When Windows boots up, it recognizes the 2nd drive with the name "WINDOZE" and the format as FAT32. So I can tell which drive is which and select it without accidently erasing my Mac OS X drive.
    HTH someone.

  • Internal drive disappeared !

    Help! my drive evacuated !
My external turned Internal 160 WD drive seems to have disappeared from the desktop. Although it shows up in the Utilities window, when I try to run repair disk, it prompts me that the drive cannot be found.
What happened to my drive ??? Anybody... ??
    G4   Mac OS X (10.3.1)
    G4   Mac OS X (10.3.1)

    Hi Rachna:
Some older G4s do have a limitation on how large a drive they recognize (I think the limit is 128GB), and generally the response to this is to partition the drive into chunks smaller than this, which is something Disk Utility should be able to handle.
If it were to happen again, the first thing I'd try is to unplug the cables from the drive, then reconnect them (turn the computer off first, of course, but you can leave it plugged in so that the hardware is properly grounded). If that doesn't work, then Disk Warrior often will see a drive whose directory has become too corrupted for it to mount under OS X.

  • Installing boot camp on 2nd internal drive on MacPro

I have a Mac Pro that came with 2 hard drives built in. Can I install bootcamp on the second internal hard drive? Right now it's totally blank. I just want to leave my main mac hard drive as only mac stuff.

Yes, you can. I have 4 hard drives on my Mac Pro and have given the entire 4th drive to Windows.
You don't say what you plan to install on that bootcamp partition on your 2nd drive, but if it is some version of Windows you will likely have to use your Windows install disk to format the partition.

  • OS 8.5 not booting on 2nd internal drive.

I have two internal hard drives on my G4 Digital Audio M.T. One of the drives has OS 10.4.4 plus OS 9.2.X. I installed OS 8.5 on the second one so that I could play some of my old favorite games.
But going to the system preferences in OS 10 and choosing the OS 8.5 hard drive as the start up drive doesn't work The computer still boots up in OS 10.4.4

    Hi, Mr Pixel -
Unfortunately, no. Your G3 PB "Pismo" originally came with OS 9.0.2 - that is the minimum OS it can use.
In general, no Mac can boot to an OS of a version earlier than the one it shipped with. The reason - earlier OS's don't have, can't have, the necessary files to run newer hardware.

  • Maintenance scripts on 2nd internal drive?

I was wondering, I suddenly got the idea that perhaps when I run the maintenance scripts they are only working on my built-in original hard drive and maybe not on my second internal hard drive, even though I'm booting up with that 2nd drive?
    ??

Yes. Thank you. I'll mark this question as answered.
The next day, after posting the question I discovered that my Start-up drive had changed and I didn't realize it. I had "reset Pram," and apparently that's what changed my Start-up drive.
So I was 'perplexed,' when the maintenance scripts indicated the drive they did.
