Mac G5 Trouble

My Mac G5 was running real loud, so I turned it off.  I had to unplug it to turn it off.  After letting it rest for about 2 hours, I turned it on again.  There was a clicking noise in the tower.  In the center of the screen was  a small icon of the "Finder" rotating with a question mark.  What does this mean and how can I fix this?  Should I take it in to Apple?  Please tell me I have not lost all of my stored information.

It really sounds like your hard drive died and you may well have lost everything on it.  Fans running fast means the system crashed which could be due to the drive not working.  Clicking may be one of the death sounds of a drive and a ? means the computer cannot find a valid boot system which can have several reasons but if your hard drive died then your system files as well as your data files have moved on to a different plane of existence.
If you take it in to Apple the technicians may well wonder what that odd machine is.  Maybe they will remember last having seen a G5  many years ago.
Insert your installer disk in the computer and hold down the C key so it boots from that.  See if your drive appears in Disk Utility, but it is almost guaranteed it won't.  If it doesn't, we can discuss options, but in the end they come down to replacing the hard drive.  The cheapest way is to do it yourself (maybe $80-100).
As for your data, there are various voodoo methods of tring to get a drive to start one last time, but I don't know if it includes a clicking drive, usually just those that do not spin at all.

  • Mac have trouble starting up.

    Hello!
For some reason, my mac have trouble starting up. I've tried using the apple guide about how to fix the issue/ perform a safe booth but it doesn't work.
    SYMPTOMS:
    1. when turned on: the screen displays an apple screen with a loading continueous circle and stays there FOREVER.
after turning on and off for several times, it finally works. However, most of the time when it works/actually starts up, it cannot be connected the internet.
    2. The mac also have trouble with the itune as I cannot sync any device to it and froze.
    3.  I cannot update my mac. It suggested that in order to update, the mac must be restart so the installation can take place but when its starting
installing the update, the message then appear and says " an error occured durin installation" then it restarts and the process of trouble starting up repeats (back to 1.).
    ** Incidence before this happens**
A few days before it happened, there was a power shut down at my house, thus the mac was turned off incorrectly. so I have to turn on the mac again before it was turned off again by the power shut down.  IT HAPPENED 3 TIMEs
Since then the Mac was slow and starting to become less responsive. Then the trouble starting up occurs.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!
    Thank you very much

    hi,
I booted the computer and insert the disc then press c. but nothing happens. Infact the imac wont eject the disc when I press the eject button.
    What should I do?
    Thank you!!!!!!!

  • Trouble connecting kodak 3.2 to mac lion, trouble connecting kodak 3.2 to mac lion, trouble connecting kodak 3.2 to mac lion, trouble connecting kodak 3.2 to mac lion

    Hi there,
I'm having trouble connecting a Kodak 3.2 printer to my Mac (Lion OS 10.7.4) - I've tried it on Wifi but no success and the same with usb. The mac is saying Printer not responding.
I've followed troubleshoot on the kodak support site and also done the usual uninstall - reinstall but to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

The first question would be if it works while directly plugged in to the machine rather than on Wifi.

If you base any decision on what you read on this forum, you might not make any purchase.
The fact is some people have had issues, just like people do with pretty much anything they buy. There's not a lot you can do if you buy something and it goes wrong other than getting it replaced, repaired or refunded.
When devices are mass produced things can go wrong. It's a fact of mass production. Some batches can be bad yet some good. There are too many variables concerned especially with computers and computer components (from a variety of different manufacturers).
Because this is a support forum, most threads are from people experiencing issues. This is not representative of everyone who has received an i7 iMac. If it were, it would probably have made the television news!
I opted for the i5 iMac, which, apart from the CPU has the same components as the i7. My machine is an absolute joy.
I always perform a clean installation of the operating system on any new machine I buy - helps remove a potential bad OS image issue from appearing. This i5 system runs beautifully.
If you do order one and if it turns out to be a bad one, return it for an exchange until you get one you are happy with.
I think it's fair to say there are more happy i7 iMac owners out there than unhappy iMac i7 owners. If they were all experiencing issues, the forum would be an awful lot busier with complaint threads.

  • New Mac, Mail Troubles

Just bought a new Mac and set up the mail application with my Gmail account. The only problem is, it's attempting to download every single email I've ever received. Needless to say I do NOT want this. How to I do so?
Also, I should note that I also have an older Mac which I sync with using MobileME. I have already specified that I wanted Mail accounts to sync.

Obviously your Gmail account is being accessed as IMAP, and in the Mail Preferences/Accounts/Advanced you have likely selected to keep copies of all messages and their attachments for Offline Viewing? Thus, since with IMAP the Inbox and Sent reside on the server (and thus contain all the messages) this setting will cause Mail to download them all the keep the copies. Set this up to not keep copies, and only the list of the messages will be downloaded.
Also you can choose to not subscribe to the All Mail folder on the Gmail server. If not familiar with how to do this, do a Google search with Gmail and Advanced IMAP Controls. To enable this particular exclusion, sign on to your Gmail account, click on Settings, then on Labs, and enable advanced IMAP control. Once that is done, you can then click on Labels tab in Settings and make some selections about excluding certain folders.
The MobileMe sync feature applies only to account setup info, addressbooks, and not messages. With IMAP accounts it is their nature to sync to each computer that accesses them, while with POP, the sync feature will not sync the messages themselves.

  • .mac email troubles on windows 2000 machine

I posted this on another mac discussion board but didn't get any answers, so i thought i'd try here.
During the time that I am unable to access the internet with my iMac, I'm using my Windows machine, WIndows 200 and Outlook Express to get my .mac email. I can't seem to get it to set up properly to send mail, though. I'm mirroring the Outlook Express configuration on the iMac but it won't send using my mac address. I am able to send using my hotmail address. ANy thoughts?
    thanks in advance.

  • Mac book trouble connecting to wifi

My router was old and we received a new one.  My mac book used to recognize my router and now will not connect.  All the other devices now connect to the new router except the laptop.  Is there something special that I need to do?

Make sure you are connecting to the proper network with the supplied wireless network key on the side of the modem. If you are and all other devices are connecting except this one it may be an issue with that PC, like the wireless card is turned off (some laptops have a switch you can turn on and off). If you can connect that laptop to a wired connection and it gets internet i would suggest you check with the manufacture. Could be the wireless being turned off, or the entire network card is bad.

  • I am new to Macs..trouble installing CS5

    Hi,
I am new to and totally clueless on Macs but have downloaded CS5 (for Mac) trial version. I have managed to download the file (16.3M) but when I open the folder it I find (i) Adobepatch Installer and (ii) a 2nd folder called payloads with files in it such as adobe photoshop 12-core-221110064602, adobe photoshop 12-support-221110065323 (both of these have a bunch of programs in too) and a media, setup.xml file.
I have no idea how to install from this point, when I click on the Adobepatch Installer the adobe application manager pops up with a message saying undate is not applicable.
Is there anyone that has any idea as to what I should do, I know Macs are supposed to be easier but it feels like trying to learn how to walk again!!!!!!!
any advice would be hugely appreciated

Sounds to me as if you have downloaded the wrong file or the download did not complete. The file should be about 1.1Gb, not just a few Mb like you have.
    Go here: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=photoshop&loc=en_gb
and do the download again. Make sure you click on the Region button (bottom left) and select your region if you are not in the UK.
Macs ARE easy and there will be no nonsense once you have the correct installer.

    Hi Brad,
Is this in a Browser, if so which one?
TenFourFox is the most up to date browser for our PPCs, they even have G4 & G5 optimized versions...

SeaMonkey seems pretty fast also, with many options...

  • Mac booting troubles

Hi y'all. So, I have both OS X Lion and Windows installed on my Spring '11 15" Macbook Pro. However, whenever I want to boot onto my Mac partition (it is already selected to boot to it by default), the white screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel at the bottom stays "forever." I have to shut down my Mac from my power button and turn it back on. Then the 2nd time, it boots normally. This happens every single time I load into OS X (Windows is perfectly fine), and it's very annoying to have to turn my Macbook on twice in order to get to Lion. Any thoughts on this?

Check whether your hard drive is still functioning properly. You can do this in the disk utility tool.

  • New to Mac OSX - Trouble with running OS 9 Apps

I have an old Bondi Blue mac, which I bought used. Originally it has OS9 on it. When I got it, I upgraded to OS X starting with a completely clean install. Since I didn't know OS9 I figured why not reduce the overhead for an OS I'll never use.
However, I wanted to use the old Bondi for my 3 year old. And all the software for three year olds are basically old legacy OS 9 apps. When I go to load them, it tells me I don't have Classic mode or OS/9?
What gives? Do I need to go back and put OS/9 on ? I have no idea how to do that.
Should I reimage the disk for OS/9 only? When I tried to do this with my original OS/9 disk, it said I needed the earlier version of OS/9 (prior to this disk). SO I don't even have that.
Whats the best answer here? I'm only trying to use the bondi for educational games for my 3 year old.
    Thanks.

Your OS X install discs should have the Classic Installer.

  • IDCS4 Mac - Having trouble with a selection suite.

    Hello Everyone:<br /><br />I have implemented a very basic selection suite.  Here is what the code looks like in the .FR:<br /><br />  AddIn<br />  {<br />     kLayoutSuiteBoss, <br />     kInvalidClass,<br />     {<br />        IID_IWPCIMAGESSELECTIONSUITE, kWPCImagesSelectionSuiteCSBImpl,<br />     }<br />  },<br /><br />  AddIn<br />  {<br />     kIntegratorSuiteBoss,<br />     kInvalidClass, <br />     {<br />        IID_IWPCIMAGESSELECTIONSUITE, kWPCImagesSelectionSuiteASBImpl,<br />     }<br />  },<br /><br />The actual .CPP implementation is standard boilerplate changed only to render the code unique (in other words, I changed the "My" in "MyCSB" to "WPCImages", etc.).<br /><br />I will provide that code to anyone who really wants to look at it, but it was given to me by Adobe and I really haven't changed it aside from what I have said above.<br /><br />The code works in CS, CS2 and CS3, but in CS4 when I attempt this call:<br /><br />    SelectionSuite -> GetTheSelection(&selectUIDList);<br />    <br />the program errors out with the following message:<br /><br />program received signal "EXC_BAD_ACCESS"<br /><br />Here is the code in context:<br /><br />    <br />    UIDList *selectUIDList = NULL;<br />    IActiveContext *ac = GetExecutionContextSession() -> GetActiveContext();<br />    ISelectionManager *iSelMgr = ac -> GetContextSelection();<br />    <br />    InterfacePtr<IWPCImagesSelectionSuite> SelectionSuite(iSelMgr, UseDefaultIID());<br />    if(SelectionSuite == NULL)<br />       break;<br />    <br />    SelectionSuite -> GetTheSelection(&selectUIDList);<br /><br />Can anyone see where I am going wrong?<br /><br />TIA!<br /><br />John
