MAC G5 White light, no fans or chime, new PSU

A friend gave me a late 2005 G5 with a bad power supply. The front LED would just flash white.
I replaced the power supply and now the front LED light stays white but I have no chime or fans going.  I pushed the SMU button and replaced the CR2032 battery.
Anything else that needs to be done when a new power supply is installed?
Thanks

Boy, it's real tough to tell what the problem is in person, moreso remotely.
Can you tell if the fans or hard drive are is working?
Do you have a meter to check the PSU?

  • Won't boot - no display, solid white light.  Fans spin up and gets loud.

    Hi Everyone,
I have a Core Duo 20" that won't boot. The display won't light up, and the white light stays on the whole time. No chime. Fans start slow, but then gradually gets very loud after over the course of a few seconds.
I've began taking it apart. One suspect area is the DC/DC Inverter board. The POWER_GOOD line is only showing 0.16V. Most power supplies uses signaling between 3V and 5V so I'm suspecious of this 0.16V POWER_GOOD signal.
Can someone help chime in (no pun intended), or verify the POWER_GOOD signal voltage of an early 2006 iMac Core Duo (2105)?
    THANK YOU!
    Yue

By the way, I've done AppleOption+PR (from my LCII days!), and have removed the logic board battery, waited, reinserted and retired without success. Thanks!

You are under warranty. You can call Applecare and get advice from the tech rep, or you can bring it to an Apple store or authorized Apple service provider.

  • IMac g5 20" iSight no display loud fans white light

    Hi,
Wondering if someone can help at all,
I've recently been given an iMac which needs repaired,
It seems certain parts have been stripped from it but want to make sure nothing else is wrong before buying replacements.
When I plug in it, I get the white light in the bottom right corner, fans go quite loud after around 5-10 seconds, and no display, also bad smell but think it could be because the previous owner smoked alot.
When I opened up the iMac, the hard-drive was missing and from what I can tell the hard-drive bay too, along with the ram & cd drive.
If I buy these will the mac work or is there another problem

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply, I've just managed to work my way through to the capacitors and they seem to be fine, looking at the soldering I would say they may have already been replaced on the logic board.
    Anyone have any other ideas?
Would love to get this working again, Just need to replace what was stripped.
    Thanks again

This has never happened before: my Mac Pro's (Lion) front light flashing, fans blowing, and doesn't startup...
    Any workaround? Help, please...

If there is no response to keyboard or powerbutton presses; hold power button until it shuts off. Unplug and wait 5 minutes and then plug back in and try to start again.
    Post back with results.

  • My mac mini only shows a steady power light and fan noise when powered up. No video or sound and no commumication with wired keyboard or optical mouse. Tried replacing internal battery and resetting PMU/SMC but nothing seemed to happen. Any suggestions?

My mac mini only shows a steady power light and fan noise when powered up. No video or sound and no commumication with wired keyboard or optical mouse. Tried replacing internal battery and resetting PMU/SMC but nothing seemed to happen.  Any suggestions? Many thanks! Richard

You've already done the two things I would have suggested.
If your Mini has an internal battery then I assume it's a G4. That means you've gotten a lot of good years of service from it, and it's old enough that it's certainly not covered by AppleCare anymore, and it's probably not worth spending money trying to repair it.
You should be able to tear it apart using instructions from ifixit.com to get the hard drive out, and then put the hard drive into a nice USB or FireWire enclosure (I like the ones from Other World Computing, macsales.com) so you can transfer your data to a replacement Mac.
I hope someone has another suggestion for you.

  • My Mac Pro (1,1 Intel core) does not start up and the white light is blinking

Mac Pro does not start up, the white light is blinking. I check the conexion with the monitor and tried the monitor on another Mac Pro (5,5) and work correctly

When the Power light blinks in a deliberate pattern at Satrtup, that indicates not enough RAM, in full working order, is available.
You will need some known-good RAM to make progress.

  • Macbook black screen, white light, no chime and more problems

When I completely shut down my Macbook (regular starting 2009) and turn it back on I see the white light only and black screen. Nothing works! this has happened two times and I pressed the power button for 10 seconds to do a PMC reset and it actually turned on and past this week I've been pressing SHIFT+PWR button to turn on my Macbook.
Also, when my macbook wakes up from sleep it takes a while to get back up and sometimes the sound dosen't work although I see the devices in the Audio MIDI.
Does this mean my logic board is going bad or is it a NVRAM problem? I tried resetting the NVRAM but it didn't work!

Have you tried running the Apple hardware test?  Run the extended test, which can take over an hour.

  • White light plz help

I have a 500mhz indigo imac when i press the power button it blinks a white light once and doesn't turn on i opened it up thinking maybe the button was stuck making it stay in sleep mode but it's not plz help me thanks.

No chime can be a symptom of a flat logic board battery.
Perhaps the RAM is bad, but that's unlikely if the machine worked before. Try reseating RAM or removing everything but the stock RAM.
If it's not that, then go here and download the appropriate manual for your iMac, and follow the troubleshotting steps:
    http://www.whoopis.com/computer_repair/
Opening the Mac can potentially expose you to up to 26kV of voltage. Make sure you know what you are doing before attempting DIY repair on an iMac or any CRT.

  • Tip - Mac Pro fails to boot up, no chime.

I have a Mac Pro (Intel, 2008). Within the last 6 months, a situation with the Mac Pro has occurred twice.
While asleep, or shut down, I press the Power button to start up the Mac Pro leading to the following events:
the graphics card fan runs at full speed.
the LED indicators on the RAM cards all light up red.
    the HDD's begin to spin.
the startup chime does *not* sound.
the screen does *not* turn on.
the fan does *not* slow down.
several seconds after pressing the Power button to start up the Mac Pro, it shuts itself down.
it is not possible to reset the PRAM. (the startup sequence does not proceed far enough to allow this to happen.)
resetting the system via the reset button on the mother board does not affect the situation.
replacing the PRAM battery does not necessarily correct the situation.
removing every HDD, RAM card, PCI card and cable does not correct the situation.
this is what has worked for me.
assuming that the Mac Pro is not powered up:
    unplug the power cable.
press the Power button for 5 seconds to drain any residual power from the system.
let the Mac Pro sit idle for 12 to 24 hours. (10 minutes simply doesn't do it!)
    plug the power cable in.
press the Power button to boot up the Mac Pro.
removing the HDDs, RAM cards, PCI cards and cables may or may not affect your situation.
the first time my Mac Pro booted after this procedure, only 4GB of RAM was recognised by the system. I shut down the Mac, removed and re-inserted the RAM cards and booted the Mac up again. the Mac then recognised all of my RAM (20GB).
hopefully, we'll see a new generation of the Mac Pro this year with *both* firewire and thunderbolt.
    cheers all.

Hi Greg! Yeah good tips. I'd like to add a few other tips that worked for a few of us. I have a 2009 nehalem MPro, 16 cores, 4 used internal bays, 5870 (added in 2011), replaced main boards, power supply, memory and CPU modules under extended warranty. Several ATTO pcie sas cards (r380,h380) bla blah.
    History:
Ok, we we moved the whole suite to new premises some months back and the transportation was safe and well and due to premises issue, the setup above Nd the disk arrays etc sat I. The packing for two weeks...
    Issue:
Mac Pro would not power on some times.. Else it would power on and then after or during startup would shutdown.
    Cure:
Did most of the steps you described and
    1) pulled all the disks from bays 1-4, pulled all the pci hba card  including the ati 5870, pulled the two DVD player units and lastly, the CPUs and memory module unit.
    2) cleaned all contacts with cans of clean compressed air of all the above
    3) then proceeded to replace each component then powering up the Mac Pro and make sure the startup chime occurrs, then power the Mac Pro off.
    4) I started with the memory module with a single DIMM in the memory, finally replacing them finally with all of them repeating step 3. I did find a bnd memory dimm doing this. Don't worry if the Simms are not inthe most efficient slots.. Fix this later.
    5) replace the GPU card (in my case ati 5870) strap Nd shutdown
    6) this time hold the power button in for at least 20 seconds and reset the SMC.. Wait for the squeal!,
    7) then do one of the disks or the disk set that you start from..
    8) restart.  .. Wait for it to settle. Power off
    9) plug in the mainscreen display and restart .. By now it all should be ok.
    10) power off again. Power up again with key board and restart and then shutdown
    11) add/insert  each pcie Hba power up and. Reset the SMC AS IN STEP 6 and shutdown. Repeat for any other MAKE SURE THAT THE SPEED OF THE PCIE card matches the rating of the slot.   so remaining hbas.
    12)  should be looking good by now.... So login and then shutdown
    13) and remainder of the internal disks , power up and access file systems.
    14) should u get the memory manager appear at startup and recommend to re-organise the memory Simms, then print the report or use your iPhone to record the display, shutdown and move the dimms s it requests.
    15) lastly serially plug in other peripherals and see hat they can be accesses.
Summary: worth the effort NDS time. Macpro has been solid ever since.

  • I  am using the G Drive Slim to back up my files, but I don't know how to tell if or when it is finished.  The white light does not change, flicker, go out, etc.  When is it finished?

The whole story:  The hard drive on my quite new Mac Book Pro, bought in December of 2011, crashed and burned in the Fall of 2012.  I purchased a new hard drive  and was informed that the only way I could have saved my "stuff" was to back it up with an external hard drive.  Who knew?? I bought a G Drive Slim at the Apple store, and on their advice.  BUT I  really don't understand how to use it, and the instructions are completely inadequate.  How can you tell when it is finished?  I have educated myself on the proper way to eject the Drive, but I don't know how to tell if it is done.  Or, frankly, if it is even doing anything.  The white light burns steadily, no blinking, no flickering.  Nothing.  Thanks for  help.

are you backing up files, or doing a Time machine backup, either way, the Time machine will STOP when finished and show "last backup at XXXXXX"  meaning its done...... OR if when transferring files, it will show a progress bar on your desktop and vanish when files are copied.
Open up the Hitachi drive (your G drive is made by Hitachi, and the best made by the way).....and see if the files are there.
a MORE VISUAL way is to open the hard drive file, and drag and drop files INTO the Gdrive and you can see them visually be copied there as you do it.
To see your HD on your desktop GOTO  FINDER......PREFERENCES....then GENERAL TAB.........check the box marked HARD DRIVES.........then your Gdrive will appear on your desktop........open it from there,  and DRAG and drop files from anywhere INTO the Gdrive....... easy visual way to see the files being copied into the Gdrive.

  • White light, no display or startup

So I'm deep into the trail of tears with my MBP 2.4 a1229. I very cleverly spilled some hot tea on my display which essentially killed it. 2/3 dead but everything else worked. I hooked it up to an external monitor and used it for a few days while waiting for replacement parts. No problems with the functionality of the computer at all. I ended up replacing the display and the keyboard. Upon reassembly there were a couple issues. The display worked and the keyboard worked but the computer wouldn't automatically sleep when you closed the cover. The screen would stay lit with it shut and just go to sleep after the designate time. I didn't think this was a huge issue and was just going to take it apart again once I got the time and see where i missed something. Well 4 days after the initial repair I put the computer to sleep before I went to bed and tried to wake it up in the morning. White light in the front is on but no one is home. I have powered it up and down a number of times. the drive spins up but there is nothing on the screen, no start up tone at all and no action other wise. I have tried an external monitor without success. I've reset PMU, changed seating and reseated RAM and tried with and without the battery. Researching i've found a number of issues that might fit like the logic board but the delay in the issue and the sleep problem make me wonder if it's not something simpler. Anyone think this might be some sort of hinge or sleep sensor issue? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Just as a note, I'm 4 hours from the nearest apple store so...

The sleep sensor consists of a reed switch and a magnet. The magnet should be on the edge of the display--you can usually find it with a paperclip. I think we may have the same Mac, and on mine the magnet is on the right side of the display a little over halfway up. When you close the lid, the reed switch would be in the corresponding spot under the top case near the optical drive.
My guess is that the reed switch could be malfunctioning or broken, especially since the computer wouldn't sleep when you closed the lid. Either that, or the magnet was missing or out of place. It's also possible its cable was damaged.
You can also try the steps in this article and see if anything helps:

It's even possible that your computer had developed the NVIDIA issue:

  • Just a SIMPLE query: No blinking/pausing white light when asleep?

    Hello all.
Just got my new Intel iMac, very cool. I've set the mac to Display Sleep only and no HD sleep, when the screen goes black, there is no blinking white light at the lower right corner of the iMac, unlike my 1st gen G5 version.
How would I know then for sure, that my iMac is asleep and not shut down?
    Thanks and cheers

It would have been nice, if the black Apple for example would glow slightly, but no. There is no way of knowing it, other than pressing some key on keyboard. If it wakes up... Oops, it was sleeping. If it doesn't, then it is shut down (or otherwise unwilling to co-operate with you).
I wonder, if this really is some environmental issue. Powering off your computer uses less electricity? If so, that is good, because climate change has struck again: Another christmas in a row without snow here in southern Finland...
