Mac G5 won't stay started

Here's my current problem: If I boot up my Power Mac G5, I get the gray apple screen and then it just shuts off. I can boot from a CD, and when I use the install CD/Disk Utility to check out the disk, I get this:
Missing thread record (id=34882)
Invalid extent entry
Invalid key length
Volume check failed
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed
Any ideas what's up with it?

Hi Thomas Zahler-
Then you probably are simply suffering a corrupted directory. That is why I suggest trying to repair the drive first.

  • Service won't stay started!

    I'm running ZFH 5.1.
The darn service that runs on the windows servers won't stay started.
It will start up fine, run for about 5 minutes and then stop.
In the event logs there are no entries to show errors or problems.
The servers are Windows 2003 or Windows 2000. I've tried it on both versions.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

  • New Mac Pro won't stay asleep

Hi everyone. I took delivery of my new Mac Pro a few days ago. It's the highest spec model (12 core, 64gb memory, 2 x 6gb graphics and 1TB SSD). It's connected to two 30" screens and networked to a Windows storage server.
The problem I have is that it won't stay asleep. Basically after being asleep for a couple of minutes the screens suddenly come back on and the login window appears as though somebody has pressed a key. After a minute or so it goes back to sleep and then it wakes up again and continues in a cycle.
I have tried making sure all programs are closed and nothing is running at all but it still happens.
I just wonder if anyone else has had this issue or might know a solution?

Okay thanks for all the help guys, I've discovered what the problem is but not how to fix it.
I unplugged everything but the bare minimum and the computer stayed asleep just fine. I then plugged everything in one thing at a time and tested. The culprit was one of my screens! I have an NEC Spectraview Reference 301 screen. It worked just fine on my old Mac Pro but when this screen is powered up the new Mac Pro will not stay asleep for more than 1 minute. My other screen is an Apple Cinema display and this works just fine on its own.
The solution for now is that I have to remember to hit the power button on the NEC screen before I leave the computer. This is fine but I'd love to find out what's causing this issue so I don't have to remember every time! I'm thinking maybe the NEC has some built in power settings so I'm going to fiddle with them now. If anyone else has any further ideas I'd love to hear them!

  • Power Mac G5 won't stay asleep

    Hello,
I just bought a G5 dual 2.5ghz (june '04). It won't stay asleep. I put it to sleep and it always wakes up within 3 minutes or so. I have unplugged all peripherals except for the keyboard/mouse which are hooked-up to the back of the 20" ACD. On this machine i'm running 10.4.11
I have reset the PRAM, etc. and turned off all options in the energy saver box.
Is my motherboard fried? What else can I do?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    thanks

    tsunami,
+*what does EIR not supported mean?????*+
That's a good question. I googled it but couldn't come up with anything logical.
Do you have an application in your Login Items that may be incompatible with Leopard? Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items. If there are some apps in there, it may be worth your while to jot them down, and then remove them from Login Items. After they've been removed try to sleep your computer. If it sleeps, then (if you need them), add them back in, one at a time, and keep testing to see if sleep is affected.
If the above doesn't work, create another account (I'd give it Admin Privileges) and log into it. Now try to sleep your computer. If it sleeps, you've got an issue (I hate that word) with your account...what, I don't know. You can either continue to try to locate and fix the problem, or (I suppose) you can move your data and settings to the new account....
I'm not sure where the point of diminishing returns is...It make take a fair amount of time and effort to copy your data and settings to a new account. I wonder if an archive and install would take the same amount of time, if you need to go that route...

  • Mac Pro won't cold start after being off overnight

My Mac Pro will not boot after sitting turned off overnight. I will hear the bong, but will not get past the grey screen, won't get to the Apple logo screen. I am able to start by resetting PRAM (opt + command + R + P). Once up and running, computer will restart fine, even shut down and restarted will work. But, after sitting overnight turned off, it will not start up. I have new Western Digital RE3 WD1002FBYS 1TB 7200 RPM drives installed, one is backup of the other, both are bootable. Diagnostics show no problems with drives, or any problems at all. I've reinstalled the OS twice, the problem persists, any ideas?

I have almost the same problem:
My Mac Pro switched on automatically every morning and then stopped at the grey screen.
Usually, I had to reboot it a few times, then the Apple logo appeared and the OS booted as usual.
I tried almost everything: reset PRAM, repaired disk and permissions, reset the SMC, run hardware check, replaced the battery, cleaned it inside - with no success.
One day I just left it there with the grey screen and when I came back the OS had booted!
Checking the logs I found out that it took about 30 minutes from the moment it switched on to the start of booting the OS.
In the meantime I tried this serveral times and the result is always the same: It takes from 15 to 35 minutes from turning on the Mac to the moment that the OS starts to boot.
Does anyone have the same experience or can anyone explain this behavior?

  • Mac AppStore won't even start today!

I was a happy user of mac appstore. I did not use it often, but from time to time. May be once a week.
If I click the icon to start it, it bounces for a while, and then stop bouncing. That's all it does. See the video below.
    http://screencast.com/t/X2owFG3660Q
Is there a solution for this?
Can anyone explain why this is happening?

    Hi,
Quit the Mac App Store if it's open. From the menu bar App Store / Quit App Store. Or Command + Q on your keyboard.
Launch iTunes then from the iTunes menu bar click iTunes / Preferences then select the Advanced tab.

Click: Reset warnings and Reset cache.

Now from the iTunes menu bar click Store / Sign Out.

    Try the Mac App Store.

If you still have problems, follow the paths here.

~ (Tilde) represents your Home folder.
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore/Cache.db. Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.

~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.appstore.plist and com.apple.storeagent.plist files to the Trash.

~/Library/Cookies. Move the com.apple.appstore.plist and Cookies.plist files to the Trash.

Restart your Mac. Try the MAS.
If nothing has helped reinstall the MAS by downloading and installing the v10.6.6 combo update available here.

  • OMS won't stay STARTed

Successful install in re all else, but Oracle Mgt Server starts, then stops. It never starts and runs. The system's event viewer tells me "process termination failed for JRE. %2.", and directs me to the file
    C:\oracle\ora92\sysman\log\oms.nohup
In that file, there are lots of java.lang.NullPointerExceptions, with the occasional
oracle.sysman.vxx.vxxo.VxxoNameNotFoundException: VXX-2009 : Could not find service context
    and
    exception VxaInvalidStateException{wstring reason="VXA-3032 : Error in attempting to bind OMS Services over ORB. Shutting down oms";}
    finally leading to
"Could not start management server. Initialization failure"
which, of course, I already knew...
An earlier search of the forums hinted that using the plain old IP address insead of the DHCP name (in lisnerctl.ora and / or tnsnames.ora) but the behavior is unchanged.
This is a desktop install, on XP Professional V.2002 service pack 1, on a Dell 2.39 GHz pentium, 4cpu, 256MB ram.
    jeez, it should work... HELP?
Thanks in advance -- Sara Riley

I'm relatively new to Oracle 8i, and am trying to launch the oracle management service. I've been through all the archives, and not found a good answer. Here's what I've done:
1 - created a repository in the database of interest. Now in doing so I've setup a username and password equal to one of the users in the DB. I've also tried by creating a new user. Both seem to configure just fine, but...
2 - When I try to start the NT service, it comes up as started, then if I try connect quickly I get a 'busy initializing' message (must mean I'm talking to the correct OMS), but then the service goes down.
In attempting to connect I'm providing the same username/password as the repository. I've used the configuration assistant to change the username/password to a couple different options, to no avail.
Can someone help or point to documentation on how this thing should be setup?
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

  • My Mac Mini won't stay connected to the internet.

I am using an Airport base station.  I get max bars on my menu bar.  I routunely connect to the internet with my laptop, my iphone and two ipads.  Never a problem.  I launch Safari or Firefox from my mini and get the message "you are not connected to the internet".  I click on network diagnosis, select the airport network and get the message "your internet connection appears to be working correctly.  At this time I am instantly connected to my homepage.  This lasts for no more than a minute and the connection is dropped.  I have been through this many times, always with same results.  The mini had previously worked fine over this network.  I had a power outage (my UPS died and had to be replaced) for a couple of days and have had the connection problem ever since.  All other devices work and connect fine.

and... your DNS(in Network Pref/Advanced/DNS) is maybe 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.0.1 or ... nothing?
Is Wi-Fi in the top of the "Service Order" pane?
If not, click the "gear' and from the drop down menu click "set service order" and drag Wi-Fi on top.
Click "apply" and check your internet again? Any progress? if not , continue reading...
Before going any deeper, let's try with a "new location"
In Network Pref click "Assist me" and choose "Assistant". Follow the next steps till the new location is created.
    Try again with your browser.

    Hi cybertoof,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you're seeing a startup issue with your Mac, it's booting to a gray screen with an Apple logo. Try the suggestions in the article linked below, they will resolve most issues related to starting up your Mac.

  • Mac mini won't start up.  Grey screen with apple just freezes.

Mac mini won't start up. just get a grey screen with the apple and it freezes.  Please help.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

OK, I tried setting Energy Savings to 1 minute. The Mac shut down and would not power back up via the power button, had to pull power plug. So it seems to be tied to the Energy settings.

  • My mac mini won't start up!

My mac mini won't start up but it will turn on, staying at the gray apple logo screen and nothing else.
I came home yesterday and it wouldn't 'wake up' from 'sleep' mode so I turned it off and tried to turn it back on. There's a netflix cd in there that I also can't get out. My friend suggested i slip a piece of paper in there and that it will eject, but this isn't working (maybe I'm doing this wrong?)
    help! thanks.

I have the same problem. In addition, the same happens when attempting to boot from a DVD. I was able to boot it up in Target Disc Mode, and even erase the internal HD entirely, but I still cannot boot from DVD to reinstall the OS. I have tried the SMC reset, but to no avail. Also, while I can reset the PRAM, I cannot reset the Open Firmware. Any suggestions?
