Mac gaming, why bother?

So as the spec of even entry level machines including Macs are ever increasing, any new computer is now viable as a games machine. To this end I've been Googling "Mac gaming" and sure enough there's lots of Mac gaming going on including ports of big PC and console hits from specialist companies. In fact I'm half way through BioShock Inifinite and it's awesome.
So far so good ... but ... isn't "Mac gaming" a bit of a misnomer? Because if you go and install Windows on a partition with Boot Camp and use that for your gaming then you're in the world of PC gaming aren't you? Not just Mac gaming!
So that's the question - if you install a Windows partition on an Intel Mac you can just play Windows games as normal no?

That's true :-). Games have never been the most important part of OS X, but recently companies are developing more and more games for OS X, which has been increased by the Steam for Mac release.
Anyway, I still do not recommend Macs if you just want one to play games, because there are cheaper PCs with better GPUs to run games, but it is true that iMacs and Mac Pros have got better GPUs than in the past that make them a good alternative to PCs.

Of course, always that the iMac meets your game requirements.
If you want to install Windows on a Mac, one tip: update the GPU drivers. Apple provides old GPU drivers that may not work with the best performance. Instead, I recommend you to go to the NVIDIA or ATI website (depending on the GPU brand your iMac has got) and install the latest driver

I have tried reinstalling Camera Raw many times, and have tried to open many different raw files in Elements, and still get the same error message. Please help.

How did you try to install ACR 8.8. The only way I know of that works with Elements is to use the Updates Choice on the Help menu.

In your case, the Nikon D810 needs Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) 8.6 or Lightroom 5.6. (Congratulations on buying a new camera!)
To get to that level with Photoshop Elements, you will need to replace your Photoshop Elements 12 with version 13. Adobe caps ACR updates on version 12 at 8.5.
The most convenient way to get around it without spending any money is to use the FREE from Adobe DNG Converter. Download and install it from here for FREE: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=5855&fileID=5890 Once it is installed you can convert your D810 raw files to an Adobe RAW version with the .DNG file extension that most, if not all, versions of the various Adobe software programs can use. That includes old versions of Photoshop, Elements and Lightroom. DNG converter can be used as the tool to move your files from your memory card to your computer, is efficient, will convert in batches and is completely lossless. There is no risk of any image quality degradation or RAW functionality.

Both should be plugged into the network with ethernet.. if at all possible.
If you have a router already then both bridged otherwise one set to router and one to bridge.
How do you access the TC? Ethernet or wireless?
Are they located in the same area?
You could set different wireless networks.. if they use wireless.. this is nice easy way to do it.
You can set user account in the TC you want the business one to join with.. that will prevent access by the family.
So there is a number of ways.. none are particularly secure btw.. the TC is a home not a business device.. if anybody wants access they press the reset for one second.. pofff all the passwords are default for 5min.. to allow people who forget their password to get access.
On ML you can encrypt TM backups.. this is better for security if that is the problem.. and still use different user profile to prevent access.

A .exe file is a Windows executable. OS X does not run Windows programs. If you need to use .exe files then you will need to install Windows on your Mac:

Or you can actived the right button on your magic mouse and click on they icon in the dock. then you select "stop" and it's out of your dock.

Did you check your user name and password in Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars...tap your email account, tap SMTP, then tap the primary server name. Make sure the settings there are correct.

Why Bother with Objective C?

Given the tools out there for writing iOS apps in HTML, Jquery, C#, Ruby, etc, including some with generate apps that can run on both Android and iOS,
why bother writing in Objective C?

Interesting. Do you know of any similar projects with different languages? RubyMotion looks cool, but only if, as you say, "Ruby is your thing". For me, it is just another syntax. Objective-C is just C with a few "@" characters and a lot of "[]", so why bother? Now if there was a Perl front-end, that would be interesting.

But to get back to the question of why bother with Objective-C, the answer is clearly the Objective-C runtime. It doesn't turn C into Perl, but it comes quite close. It comes so close that it really isn't worth ones time to bother with Objective-Perl.

If you add another Time Capsule, you can have one or both Macs backup to that new device.
However, please note that it is not possible to have backups "carry over" seamlessly from one Time Capsule to another.
If you add a new Time Capsule, each Mac that is backing up to the new device will make a new complete backup and then backup incrementally after the master backup is completed.

"Outlook Data File" vs. My email address - Why both?

When I go to the Outlook Mail tab and select Folders View, I see two groups of items:
- Outlook Data File
- [email protected]
Both have an Inbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items, Junk Email and Search Folders entry with the Outlook Data File also having Calendar, Contacts, etc.
My question is Why both? The "mail" entries in the Outlook Data File don't contain the entries in the other, and I don't see any way to set the Outlook Data File entries to have my settings.

OK - I figured it out.
When I installed Outlook I let it set up my email account for me and the account wound up as an IMAP account instead of a POP3 account. When I deleted the email setup and then created the POP3 account manually it let me choose "Use existing Outlook data file and now everything is back to normal, i.e., There is only "Outlook" and a single set of maibox entries.

Does .mac accounts on both sides guarantee flawless connections

Does anyone know if you have 2 valid .mac accounts on both ends of the iChat video conference that you are assured of flawless video chat connections. Or do these problems that everyone seems to be experiencing still occur. I would hate to go out and pay US$200 in the hopes of alleviating these issues only to have them reoccur.
Any thoughts or first hand experience would be greatly appreciated.

No, both userrs having .mac accounts makes no difference. My mac genius said that would cure my iChat AV problems but it didn't. I've given up on iChat and am having good success with skype video.
iChat is Apple's worst software, I hope they will cure it with 10.5 but it looks like 10.5 will only add eye candy to iChat AV, not move it along from its beta status.

You can get faster help by posting the Mac OS version you have and more details about your iMac. They have been in continuous productionsince 1998 with four distinct procesor families, and each ahve different troubleshooting steps. If you called a Ford dealer about a car problem, the first thing ithey will ask is "which Ford model and year?" Same deal here.
The processor description is found when you do "About this Mac" and will be a good start for identifying your iMac model; the Mac OSX will be there too.

This box has always been ticked and in the past no copies remained on server, now for no reason I can find the copies are put in the trash folder on the server and have to be manually removed.
Maybe your isp changed what "delete from server" means and that's what they do now. I would check with your ISP before blaming a mail program local to your machine.
If you want to try a "controlled experiment", set up another mail program, e.g., Thunderbird, and send a message to yourself. See if the message is treated the same way. Note, Thunderbird, like most (all?) mail programs also has an option to delete messages from the server.

Phones supplied by network operators are network-branded. This means that they alter the features of the phone to suit their marketing needs and basically turn it into a semi-functional device used to advertise to you. Features that they don't want you using are removed, their logo is plastered all over the place and links to their services are stuffed into the menus.
In some cases, they add a few features that are required to take full advantage of their subscriber services.
Given that the firmware in these phones is something based on Nokia's original firmware but subsequently modified by the network operator, any updates that the operator is planning on releasing will become available to your branded phone after they've been made available to generic, SIM-free phones. You will have to wait for your network operator to modify the firmware and release it, and this can often take a very long time, if indeed the operator bothers doing it at all. You may well be left with buggy firmware while users of SIM-free phones have already updated theirs and thus eliminated the bugs. Not to mention bugs introduced by the networks themselves during the branding process.
