Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Post any messages timestamped during that interval – the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.

  • Mac gets slow after installed OS X 10.5 Leopard

    Dear All,
Hope you had a great Christmas!!
As I mentioned, after I upgrade my OS X10.4 to 10.5 Leopard my Mac gets very slow to start the machine. Normally takes less than minute to start to operate, but now it takes long time to load.
First I thought it because of my hard drive running low space so I moved most of files to my external hard drive, left 57G free space but nothing is improved.
Any ideas why? Anyone knows how to improve the speed?
    Thanks for your helps!
    Michael

    Sounds plenty sufficient to me.
according to a quick google search, mdworker is related to spotlight, indexing what/where/content of files.
there may be other ppc stuff lurking, especially if this is not your first mac and you used migration wizard to move from a PPC to intel mac.
Thats what I did...and was quite unhappy with the perfrmance.
I finally found a QT plugin that was (one of the things) killing my quads performance. (select the plugin, do a get info, it'll tell you if its PPC or universal) QT plugins do not show in activity monitor.
Found another firefox plugin that did the same.
activity monitor shows relative processor usage.
with no programs open other than activity monitor, whats using a high percentage of processor?
Oh, and if you have an old copy of Norton utilities, that will cause all sorts of problems. The only Norton/symantec product that is still OK to use is their anti-virus, and then, only version 8 or higher. System saver and all the other parts of NU just cause problems under X.
As longs as you have at least 15% of your disk free, you should be OK there.
Much below that, and the system will complain and start doing strange things.

  • My mac gets slow when I play music from my iTunes library

Hi, aproximately six months ago I noticed that everytime I play music from my iTunes library that its stored in my 27" iMac's hard drive, the computer gets slow, the images start to flicker, the animatios on the dock and the one when u minimize or maximaze the windows, also flicker. As soon as I close iTunes the computer works fine again. When I play music from a CD this doesn't happen.
I've taken the iMac to two service providers along theese 6 months and neighther have been able to fix the issue. What they have diagnozed is an issue with the hard drive which has been changed 4 times already.
    What could be the issue?

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • Mac Getting Slower...

    Hi,
I have a 8 Core Mac Pro, with 10 Gb of Ram. I did a clean restore, and manually installed the programs. I'v had SL for a week, and I'v noticed a decrease in speed. At startup, its slower and I have unchecked everything at login menu. Programs that used to take 10-15 seconds to open, like Photoshop are now taking double that time or more, (the first time opening it).
I'v read that if you hold 6 & 4 while restarting the computer, the mac then runs in 64 bit. Since I do have all the qualifications to run in 64, would I benefit from this, since most of the programs I use are not meant to run in 64?
The sluggishness has happened to me before in 10.5. After every clean restore it would go slower as time went by. I was told to disable all login items, and I did, which sped up my mac for a while. I can't understand why this happens, I don't install many 3rd party apps that are unknown. I don't feel like my mac is really using all my processors and ram as best as it could as it gets stuck for a half a minute at times with SL. I repaired permissions, but nothing seems to help.
    Any ideas,
    Zevie

There's little advantage to running in the 64-bit kernel. Any third-party software using 32-bit plug-ins or extensions will not work, and only third-party applications written for 64-bits can take advantage of it - as of now there are very few of those. And, there's little benefit to the ability to use large amounts of RAM since the none of the current Mac models can even address the maximum enabled in the 32-bit kernel.
There are likely other reasons for your experience of slowness (unless it's simply perceptually in your mind.) You might open Activity Monitor, select All Processes from the Processes drop down menu, click twice on the CPU column header to display in descending order. Look for any entry use a large amount of CPU time. You may have some program corruption, cache or preference file corruption that could be causing the slowdown. Also look for any applications listed that are running via Rosetta - PPC only applications - as they will run slower. For example any pre-CS4 applications from Adobe.
Repairing permissions is not going to make a computer run faster. Repairing the hard drive won't either, but it may fix disk errors if any that can slow down disk accesses. But this doesn't cause a program to run slower.
I know you said you did a clean "restore" but that is not a clean "install." I suggest the latter. Boot from the SL DVD, use Disk Utility to erase the hard drive, then install SL from scratch.

  • Mac getting slower and slower, HELP!

well, i know that it is not normal for mac to be slow but this actually happens to me when i have only safari and the finder open. i checked and i have only the norton anti virus at the back ground running as well as the messenger for mac. Is it a problem with the soft ware updates? Because when i 1st got it, (feb 2008, but last year model), it was running as fast as apple had declared. But it is running very slow now, which is as good as windows. If i go down to apple and fix it or do i have to pay for any problem even if my warranty is still covered (expires at dec 08)
    Thanks

Go down there before you 90 days are up and tell them the Norton AV ware is causing havoc on your system, remove it. Basic steps to speed up your computer is repairing permissions from Utilities, reset the PRAM,NVRAM:
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Next install the Leopard disk when the first aid i is is the menu, chose it, first aid, repair your drive.
These are all steps to help performance, post back with your results. This way we can try other things. Nothing I gave you to do is harmful to your system.

Hi, the last install dvd that came out for mac's was Snow Leopard,10.6.3. Lion is a download from apple. You cannot just install it over Yosemite. You would have to backup your drive to save files you want and do a clean install. You might want to look into getting more memory. You can run 8 Gig"s of memory on your Macbook Pro.If your Macbook Pro is getting really slow you might want to download EtreCheck  and then post the results here.http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck  Check out this article.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19031

Trouble with slow Macbook Air. I have first generation MacBook Air and have a hard time keeping hard drive from being full. After trashing many docs, I have almost 5 gigs available, but mac is slow and I keep getting color wheel when I use Mail. I'd like to install Lion, but now I'm afraid it will slow down my machine even further. Do I have enough free hard disc space? Is Mail problem related to free hard disc space? Thanks for your help!

7gb of free disc space is required to install Lion.  Read this about how to free up disc space: http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html.  Also, advice on how to speed up your mac: http://www.maclife.com/article/feature/25_ways_speed_your_mac

  • Mac book pro getting slow. Help me.

I have a macbook pro 13" 2011 model. And what I noticed now is that my mac is getting slow even though I didn't use any apps at all. My free memory is still 60 gig something so I don't think this could be the reason why it's getting slow. Any help? I already deleted other big apps and programs. Even though I don't use any program, the mac is getting slow now... what should I do? do i need those mac keeper thing? thanks for the help!

    How's it going Crampy?
By the % on the CPU Processes.
Whatever is using the most CPU Processes is the one giving the most issue.
If you're using Firefox, Safari or Google, see if it's loading flash on activity monitor.
You will see under %CPU how much of the CPU is actually being used by that application.
The higher the percentage, the slower you get and the hotter your MB Pro gets.

  • Getting Slow after Migration to a new Mac

Every time, I've bought a new Mac and using Migration Assistant to migrate my data to new Mac. The new Mac is getting slower, not look like a hardware upgrade. For example, my Macbook Pro i5 needs more than 10 seconds to start MS Word while my MBA needs less than 2 seconds.
Will there so many scrap or unused data migrated from my old mac? And my "migration data" has been accumulated for several times since 5~6 years ago. I've used this "migration data" for every new Mac arrives. So, This is not the first time I've expereinced, this was happens several times when I bought a new Mac.
Please note that Spotlight Indexing is complete.
    Thanks.
    Regards,

Thanks for your suggestions. I've updated the software already (noticing that it was system, i-movie and garage band which were being updated) but that didn't help. Previously that did help for i-photo though.
Anyway, I tried the sudo thing, I got the following messages but still no i-movie :

An early 2011 MBP would have 10.6 installed, not 10.5.  I assume that is a typographical error or is the MBP model year incorrect?

  • My Mac Pro is getting slower and slower

I have an Mac Pro early 2009 version which is getting slower and slower. Startup time is about 3 minutes. How can I fix this?
    Thank you.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutesafter the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
