Mac hangs after accessing network hard drive over wifi

I have my music files on an Iomega Home Network Drive which is accessed via my Netgear DG834GT router accross wifi. I can connect ok, however after a while it will stop working and my mac hangs. I have to force a shut down on my macbook by holding down the power button . I don't want to keep doing this as it may harm my macbook hard drive. This normally happens after using iTunes.
I have tried everything, using fixed IPs within my network, using 802.11g only etc.
Has anyone got the same issue, if so is there a fix. I think it is a leopard samba issue, but it seems to have been around since 10.5, but no recognition from apple.
Any ideas?

Can the Macbook read other data on the drive fine?
yes it can

  • How to access my hard drive over the internet?

    Hi,
I would like to be able to access my hard drive while I am away from my desk. I am not running OS X Server. How can I do this?
Also, I am behind an Airport Base Station. Which ports would I need to open up?
Besides my Firewall and my Administrator password, how else can I secure the access?
    thank you....

VPN does not allow you to control your computer remotely, you are probably thinking of VNC. A VPN essentially extends your local network so that you can access it remotely. You can control your host computer to more than you can control any other computer by accessing it over your LAN.
I still think a VPN is the best option, but it's not easy to install (MacOS X server has a VPN with a GUI built in). OpenVPN is a great option, and there are several GUI interfaces for it (look for these on www.versiontracker.com). This is best because it is secure and will allow you to access your entire hard drive.
Like I said in the last post, WebDAV is also an option. This is what a .Mac iDisk is. This will only allow you access a specific folder (or set of folders) that reside in the Apache (var/www) directory. Although you can always make an alias to the apache directory and keep it in your Documents folder.
A third option that I didn't state before because it's probably the least best is to use NFS to access your home computer. This will allow you to access your entire hard drive. The downside to this is that there is no encryption, nor a password. For security, it uses IP or domain addresses. So this is not an option unless you will to accessing your hard drive from a computer (or a few computers) with (a) static IP address(es).

  • Beachball and hanging after putting old hard drive into new MacBook Pro

    Hi there,
I really hope to find some help here.
    The situation:
I had a MacBook Pro Early 2008 running Lion (10.7.5) until it died about a week ago (mainboard broken).
In this old Macbook Pro I had two hard drives: 128GB SSD and 1TB SATA 5400.
I bought a second hand MacBook Pro Late 2011 on ebay and upgraded the Ram to 16 GB.
Then I put the two hard drives in the new MacBook Pro Late 2011.
The Macbook is super fast and very responsive but every couple of minutes it is hanging for a few seconds or I get a beachball randomly.
This can happen in Finder, Google Chrome, Adobe Dreamweaver, basically anytime using any software.
I tried to create a new account and see if the problem persists. And yes, it does.
I tested the hard drives (disk utility) and the Ram (memtest/terminal) and all is ok with this.
The Macbook Pro Late 2011 comes with a 256 GB SSD and an empty slot for the second hard drive. The Macbook seems to function normal when using the 256GB SSD with Lion installed.
Unfortunately my external backup hard drive is not working anymore so I can't restore from there.
What do you recommend? Would it make sense to make a backup now, take out the 128GB and put in the 256 GB hard drive?
    Please advice!
Thanks for any kind of help in advance!
    Chris

I know people that have been doing things for longer than 10 years and they know jack. Formatting the HD is not really good "advice" in this situation.
I'm not cocksure - you just think I am because I'm disagreeing with you opinion, which you believe to be sacred (because you've been commenting for 10 years?).
So I thank you sir for your opinion but I certainly do not need your luck.
    Later.

  • Mac freezes after 10 minutes, hard drive and sata cable replaced

MacBook Pro (MacBook Pro 15" Unibody 2.53 GHz Mid 2009) froze about a month ago. Computer would get slow and then just stop responding. Wouldn't even respond to force quit commands. Press and hold power button only way to free it up.
Directory Scan, Volume Structure failed. Bad Blocks.
Purchased new hard drive (Western Digital Blue 320 GB Mobile Hard Drive: 2.5 Inch, 5400 RPM, SATA II, 8 MB Cache) and replaced. Try restore from time machine, fails - freezes up with about 20 minutes remaining to finish.
Got a USB SATA cable (external) and new SATA cable (internal) for computer.
The drive and computer work fine when connected via external USB. Ran Apple Harware Test (ok), reset NVRAM, all software is up to date.
I replaced SATA cable in computer and tried drive internal - same problems. Still freezes after working for just a short while.
So to sum it up, new drive works via external USB but not when installed internally.
Any ideas what it could be? Did I buy the wrong drive? Do I have two bad SATA cables? Something else entirely?
    Thanks! Mike

On you picture going from right to left. the cables are/WIFI/Optical Drive/Hard Drive/ Battery. What you have circled is the cable for the Hard Drive. Sometimes you can have a little extra tape on the connector. I would not use it as a grab point to remove an reseat the cable. You would want to carefully pull the cable loose and make sure there is no separation in it and then reseat it. I cannot see your hard drive in the picture,so I do not know if you have the sata or ssd drive. If it is the sata drive ,do you hear any light clicking noise when you startup? This would mean that you have possible drive damage. If you have a ssd drive (solid state drive) it is not possible  to damage the drive by jarring it as there are no moving parts. Make sure all connection cables are fully seated. Include reseating of memory. If in recovery/utilities/disk utilities/ your startup volume does not show, that is problematic. There is single user and SMC reset. after that I do not know what to advise.https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295   https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203176

  • Using iTunes library from an external drive over wifi

    Hello Community Peeps!
I'm looking for some advice and hope someone has the same setup that I'm hoping to make.
I currently have an iMac and recently had to replace the screen. As the machine is now out of warranty I'm thinking to sell it on before I get any further problems. I Currently have all my work and entire iTunes library stored on an external drive connected via usb to the iMac.
As a graphic designer i need to be fairly mobile and am thinking about changing my setup to this, so that when i'm in one location I can use a bigger screen and when I need to be out and mobile I can just take my MBP out with me and get by designing on that screen.
    I am thinking of getting purchasing;
    • The most powerful 15" MBP latest I can afford (probably with 2GB graphics).
    • Separate 27" display to connect the MBP to when I am in one location.
    • Airport base station (not time capsule) to connect my external drive to via USB to make it a wifi drive.
I already have Apple TV but have been told that in order to have my Apple TV access my iTunes library (on the external hard drive connected to the base station) over wifi I will need the MBP switched on and iTunes open. Thats no problem as long as I can do it over wifi.
I will be using the latest OSX and latest iTunes.
I have no since been told by a friend that iTunes has glitches in it and will be unreiable inaccessing my library on the hard drive over wifi.
So my question is, does anyone else have this kind of setup and what is their experience on itunes accessing it's library stored on what is effectively a wifi drive.
    And advice gratefully received!
    Thanks

That won't get your your "library".  Your library, in essence, is (was?) a file called library.itl in your iTunes folder.  This is a database with a listing of which media files you have and where they are, long with playlists, ratings, and a bunch of other things (which artwork goes with which album).  If all you have on the external drive are the media files then when your old computer died it took the library.itl file with it.

If you want your full library listing back then you will have to recover it from your bakup drive (which is why you have it).  Alternatively you can create a brand new library file, add the media to it, and start new.

  • Im new to the iCloud and Mac in general. After experincing a hard drive crash out of the blue, I lost everything. I want to make sure this doesn't happen again. I show backups for my iPhone and my daughter's iPod but my mac doesn't exist. How do I fix tho

I'm new to the iCloud and Mac in general. After experiencing a hard drive that went out of the blue, I lost everything. I wanted to use the icloud to back my documents up. I went into the iCloud under settings but it only shows my iPhone and daughter's iPod. How do I get my Mac to back up too? Is there something I need to use to have the documents back up?

You cannot back up your Mac to iCloud. Even backing the whole thing up to another online service would be dubious because it would take a very long time. You should buy an external hard disk and back up to that - even better, buy two and use one to make a Time Machine backup and the other to clone your Mac from time to time, thus giving you a backup from which you can boot in an emergency.
If you wanted to back up a suitably sized selection of data to an online service there are a number of third-party methods available, some of which are examined here:

  • Can you share an external hard drive over a network when your Apple Airport Extreme is in bridge mode?

Hello, is it possible to share an external hard drive over a network when I have my Airport Extreme in bridge mode?  I can't use my AE as my main router at the moment but still want to be able to use the hard drive on the network, and the router I am using isn't capable of adding an external hard drive.  I use Windows 7 and the other router is a Netgear.  I have searched the communities and have not come across an answer to this question.  I have tried several configurations within windows to try and see the hard drive but none have worked.  I can see the hard drive when I run Airport utlities, but it cannot be seen on the network.  Thanks to anyone who can help!

I think there is some confusion in this thread..
If you are sharing on a local LAN port forwarding is not required.
is it possible to share an external hard drive over a network when I have my Airport Extreme in bridge mode?
Answer is yes.. no port forwarding, mapping whatever term is used.. is needed. Port mapping is required when you cross over a NAT router.. as long as all the devices are inside a single LAN.. then no port mapping.
I assign to my Airport Extreme, do I do so with the settings of:
    Service: SMB
    Type: TCP
    Server IP: xx.x.x.x
    Port Start: 445
    Port End: 445
This would not work even from WAN.. SMB is blocked by all responsible ISP.. there is simply too many unprotected windows machines out there. If they allowed SMB .. the world would be flooded with hijacked bots. And stolen data like bank accounts. SMB is not a secure protocol.
But this is not necessary on a LAN.
The problem can be Mavericks which does a terrible job presenting network drives.. The usual recommendations are to use AFP or force the connection to CIFS (ie SMB1 not 2).
If you use airport,, then use AFP.
In finder.. Go, Connect to server.
AFP://AEname or AEIPaddress. (replace with the network name of the AE or its actual IP address).
When asked for password.. type public if you did not change it or use whatever password you put.
Store the password in the keychain.

Not directly, but there are ways to connect to a shared data store in the App Store. See dropbox, for example.

  • After 10.5 upgrade Mac will not boot from hard drive

I just upgraded to 10.5 Leopard but my mac will not boot from the hard drive even after selecting my hard drive as the startup disk. The mac will start to boot but will cut itself off before the boot is complete. I have to leave the Leopard disk in the mac and hold down C to get the mac to turn on but it only allows me to install the software again.

instead of archive and install you might first want to try restoring your system using TM to some time point before your failed 10.5.1 upgrade. Then try upgrading to 10.5.1 again. I would suggest downloading the full 110 MB upgrade and installing it manually rather than doing it through the software upgrade menu.
You can download the upgrade here:

  • How come my mac isnt showing my external hard drive after installing os x maverick? and how to i fix that??

how come my mac isnt showing my external hard drive after installing os x maverick? and how to i fix that??

How do you mean it isn't showing the external drive?  If you mean on the desktop, click Finder on the menu bar, Preferences, General and check the boxes for Show these items on the desktop - make sure hard drives is checked.
If you mean it is not showing in Finder or Disk Utility, make sure it is turned on, reboot and see if that mounts it so it shows up.

  • I tried to put a copy of windows xp on a dos partition on my mac pro and now cannot access the hard drive with the latest maverics on it

I tried to put a copy of windows xp on a dos partition on my harddrive partitioned for mac pro os x maveriks 10.9.3 but with a dos partition fat32 for the windows; but when I tried to reboot I cannot now access the hard drive.  Sometimes I get a white page with a question mark and sometimes I get a black screen with a blinking curser at the top.  I have a backup mac with lion which I am now using to comunicate.

Windows XP has a notorious reputation for crapping on multiple partition boot blocks, including in your case, OS X.
    There are three options.
Boot into Recovery (Press and hold command+R at boot)Choices
    Restore from Time Machine backup
Retrieve and install current version of OS X from Apple Servers
Boot into Internet Recovery (Press and hold option+command+R at boot)
Requires Mac that shipped with OS X Lion or later
Retrieves and installs original version of OS X that shipped with the machine
    Must update to Mavericks again
Restore user data from Time Machine
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar appointmentSee if Apple will reinstall OS X Mavericks for you
When you resurrect your machine, follow Eric Root's advice about Boot Camp, or a Virtual Machine. Boot Camp v5.1 on Mavericks no longer supports Windows XP, Vista, or Enterprise versions of Windows 7 or 8.

  • Creating a VPN from my remote powerbook to a stand-alone network Hard drive

I would like to set up a VPN or V secure access from my powerbook to a Network Hard drive so when I travel I can securely access my data over the internet on my hard drive at home, when I have my powerbook with me.
I dont want to have to buy another computer and wondered if I can acheive this with a Networked hard drive, and my router. If so I envisige purchasing a suitable NAS like a Maxtor shared storage plus or a Lacie mini ethernet disk. I have an old router which I may need to update, but wondered if I need to get anything specific for this job?

    drive, and my router.
If your router can accept VPN connections then this should be possible.
You will also need a static IP address from your ISP.
However most consumer routers do not support incoming connections (VPN) in this way, so I would suspect you would need to upgrade your router to one that can.
However you may find using something like a .mac account may be an easier and much cheaper option.
