Mac Hard Drive Failure - How to get all info of iphone?

The computer that I sync my iphone to had a complete system drive failure. The drive is toast, nothing recoverable. There is lots of information that I have on my iphone that I now only have on my iphone: mail, contacts, notes, pictures. I want to keep all of this information, but I haven't been able to find a way to get it off the iphone.
If I sync to the fresh OSX install on the computer that failed, or one of my other macs, the iphone gets wiped squeaky clean. I obviously don't want this to occur. Does anyone know a way to create an iphone backup on a computer other than the one the iphone is set to sync to, or is there a way to access the iphone as a disk and copy the information?
Any help would be appreciated.
And yes, I have learned the "backup frequently" lesson.

This is one reason why maintaining a backup is so important. The iPhone does not support disk mode, and is not designed nor intended to be a backup storage device.
If I sync to the fresh OSX install on the computer that failed, or one of my other macs, the iphone gets wiped squeaky clean.
Not true. In regards to iTunes content, an iPhone can be synced or manually managed with an iTunes library on a single computer only, and photos can be transferred from a single computer only. When transferring iTunes content and photos from another computer, all iTunes content and photos transferred from a different computer will be erased from the iPhone first, but no other content on the iPhone will be touched. Contacts, calendar events, and Safari bookmarks can be synced with the supports applications on multiple computers.
iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content that was purchased or downloaded from the iTunes store from an iPod or iPhone, but this is for iTunes content that was purchase or downloaded from the iTunes store only.
With your iPhone connected to iTunes on the Mac you plan on using to sync your iPhone with, first you need to authorize the Mac with your iTunes account with iTunes if your haven't already done so. Without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone. If all 3rd party apps do not transfer, you can re-download a 3rd party app with iTunes on the Mac and you won't be charged again for a purchased app as long as you use the same iTunes account to re-download the app that was used to purchase the app originally.
Photos transferred to an iPhone is a one way transfer process only. Photos transferred to an iPhone are optimize for viewing on the iPhone as part of the iTunes sync/transfer process only - the original resolution of these photos is reduced, which is why Apple doesn't transferring these photos in the opposite direction, and why including these photos with your computer's backup is important.
There are some 3rd party apps that support transferring these photos in the opposite direction and if successful, the original resolution of these photos will be lost.
Before syncing contacts with the Address Book and calendar events with iCal on this Mac if there are no contacts in the Address Book and no calendar events in iCal - both are empty, enter one contact in the Address Book and one calendar event in iCal - make these up if needed, which can be deleted later. This will provide a merge prompt when syncing this data, which you want to select.
Backup, backup, bakcup backup, backup, backup.
Did I mention maintaining a backup?

I bought this laptop about a year ago from Staples, all of a sudden my hard drive started clickin and has now died.  I just want to replace the hard drive, but how do I get a valid install of Windows 8 for this?

    Hello,
You should be able to order factory recovery media by calling Lenovo tech support.  Keep in mind you will also need an external USB DVD drive to install it, as the ThinkPad S320u does not have one bulit into it.

  • Pro Mac hard drive tanked - how do I sync iPhone w/ new HD?

My Pro Mac hard drive totally tanked. A new hard drive was installed by the Apple Store tech folks. The old drive is completely toast. The computer runs great, but sans any of my iPhone data.
I am not given the option to back up anything - photos, music, etc - just "erase". It seems odd to not be able to backup the photos.
Is there a program out there that will allow me to do it? Apple repair doods say they can't do it. Perhaps what they really mean is the won't do it, but either way I am left wanting a 3rd-party app that will let me do it myself.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    David,
Unfortunately, your situation is like many on here--lost data due to lack of a backup. The iPhone was not meant to be a backup device, so much of your data is gone.
Not all is lost, however. You can transfer PURCHASED songs from iTunes back to your computer (iTunes>File>Transfer songs from iPod/iPhone). Songs that you ripped or did not purchase from iTunes are gone.
Your photos, though, are gone for good. When you sync your photos from iPhoto or other program, the actual .JPEG files are not transferred. Rather, the photos are "optimized" for the iPhone, meaning a VERY small resolution image is used for display on the iPhone. Even if you could (which you can't) get those teeny images off the iPhone, they'd be useless for any practical use.
This once again highlights the need to always make sure your data is backed up.
    Sorry for your lost data.

Hard drive failed in the notebook / laptop. How do I get windows 8 back on the new drive? Hp told me they will not send or sell me recovery disks. WHat kind of crap is that?
    Help!

Once one is out of warranty HP is not obligated to send recocovery media for free. Owners have a responsibility to create the recovery media shortly after removing their notebook during the inital product setup.
You can purhase the recovery media from HP here.
The BIOS does hold the product code for Windows 8, so that is a non issue.

  • Hard drive failure - how to boot from replacement?

the hard drive in my Mac Mini has become unbootable - I've gone through all the options suggested in Apple support docs including trying to boot from install disk.  I don't get a startup screen to select where to boot from, jus the gray spinning gear.  I fear the drive is dead.  It was preceeded by strange behavior of permissions.  Most of what I read is advice on installing a replacement drive but copying info from the old.  How does one create a new bootable drive?  I'm thinking of replacing the hard drive with SSD. Thanks Rich

AHT (apple-hardware-test), at least on 10.9-era macs, seems to do *no* tests at all of the hard-driver or SSD. You have to use other testing methods, to run SMART long and short self-tests of SSD and HD as detailed below, and google is your friend.
    === Details ===
For AHT: Power-off. Hold-down "option" and "d" keys, and keep holding them down while you power on. After a minute or two it will boot Apple Hardware Test from internet, at least for 10.9-era hardware. Use a network cable if you can. With known-bad or missing hard-drives, the AHT still says "no problems found".
For example, I have had 3 new macs in 3 weeks that all have hard-drives that always report "read-failure" to SMART tests. The Apple Hardware Test apparently does NOT do any testing of hard-drive(s) at all. Not only did say "No problems found" with the bad-drive(s), if you remove the hard-drive completely it still reports "No problems found"!  You may want to run some long SMART tests on hard-drive(s) weekly, even if they are brand new... the 3 that failed on me were different brands from different stores: all reported "read-failure" in around 30 hours. So I conclude that consumer-drives have very poor quality... in effect, the end-user is doing the QA tests by using the drive as apparently little QA goes on at factory. And/or the shipping folks are really throwing those things around hard.
To run SMART tests on a mac, you can "brew install smartmontools" and "brew install gsmartcontrol". Or if you are not a command-line person, you can get a 14-day trial of Drive-DX disk-health tester (looks like ja smartctl-gui-wrapper) from:
http://binaryfruit.com/drivedx They also have a links to a SMART-SAT driver that lets you run smart tests on almost any newer usb-enclosed HD or SSD. Nice
If mac won't boot at all from disk, you can rescue/recover by booting from usb or live-cd such as gparted-live-cd/usb  (which boots most intel macs as it has the guid bootability):
    http://www.ehow.com/how_8505863_boot-gparted-cd-mac.html
PartedMagic is really nice and boots every intel mac I've tried it on, but is no longer free. Right on desktop is "Disk Health" (which runs gsmartcontrol). Also has ddrescue, testdisk, photorec, etc. Sees HFS+ just fine.

  • Computer Hard Drive Failure - How can I copy itunes library to new pc/ipod?

    Hi
My old desktop pc hard drive recently crashed due to a critical error so I have invested in a new pc and am considering purchasing a more up to date ipod to replace my old ipod mini. Is there are way I can access, retrieve or transfer my existing itunes library of imported cd / downloaded (purchased) music from my old pc (e.g. from the ipod mini itself or by loading my original software disc on the new pc?) to my new pc / ipod or do I have to start again from scratch and lose purchased tunes etc? If so, Apple may lose a customer, which would be a shame.
    Many thanks for your help.
    Mike

1). Connect your iPod to your new computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Hard drive died, how to get music off iPod

My hard drive died so I lost iTunes. I've reinstalled iTunes and need to move all my music from my iPod to iTunes. If I plug my iPod into my computer, will iTunes take all that music and create a new music library, or will it go the other way around and the new empty iTunes will remove all the music from my iPod?
    I hope that makes sense

Regular forum poster, Zevoneer, has written a very detailed list on your options of how to do this. I need to add one thing. Once you have recovered your library, PLEASE BACKUP YOUR MUSIC, so you don't have to go through this aggravation, again.

  • My iMac hard drive crashed how do get my apps on the new one?

The hard drive for my 27 inch imac crashed how do I get the iphoto and other owned apps in my new hard drive?

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provides trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.
You will need to install the old drive into an external enclosure to try and access it.
Any applications purchased from the App Store can simply be redownloaded.

  • Hard drive failure, how to transfer from ipod to imac

OK, my iMac G5 hard drive failed....I had no good backup of my iTunes library, except on my iPod mini.....so, I thought that all I had to do was copy my library from my mini to my iMac.

  • How to get ALL photos off iPhone and into iMac?

I hope I can describe this clearly.
I have close to 1000 photos on my iPhone 5s, all in different albums.  I want to get ALL of them off the iPhone and backed up into my iMac so I don't lose them when I upgrade (which has happened before.) The albums I seem to have the biggest problem with are the ones that came over when I went from a PC to a Mac about 2 years ago and were in albums in my Kodak Easy Share.  I can't get iPhoto to recognize these photos/albums so I can move them from the iPhone. Honestly, I'm not even sure how I got them from where they originated into my iPhone. I'd thought I'd lost them so when they popped up on my iPhone I refused to even update my phone for a while, I was so afraid to lose them.
I tried using Image Capture and it only recognized 176 photos on the iPhone.
I went into settings on my iPhone, into camera and photos, and saw that iCloud Photo Library (Beta) was "OFF." I clicked "ON" and got the message "Photos synced from iTunes will be removed. Syncing photos via iTunes is not supported when include Photo Library is turned on.  833 photos will be removed."
    I hit cancel.
If I connect my iPhone to my Mac, and check off "Sync Photos" it appears that it's going to put photo's in iPhoto on my computer on my phone, so that isn't what I want either.  I've tried Googling this, and searching on the Apple site and I can't find anything like this. Similar but not quite the same.
I also read (I think) that the iCloud would delete my photos in 30 days so I'm not sure what the value of backing them up to the iCloud is.
I've used Finder to search Kodak, Easy Share, Kodak Easy Share, in case these photos are somewhere else on the iMac that I'm not aware of, most likely due to user ignorance.
My screen is cracked, I'm going to need to upgrade soon, and I don't want to lose valuable photos again.
    Thank you!

Thank you to all for this info. Discouraging, but finally I can stop banging my head on the desk trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong.
I do believe that when I synced my iPhone at some point in the last 2 years, I pulled all the photos OUT of iPhoto and then it deleted them.  Which is most likely why the older Kodak photos that I am almost 100% certain were in iPhoto are now gone. How/when they ended up on my iPhone I don't know because I swear they suddenly appeared there a few weeks ago.
Since the old PC is gone (accessible but wiped clean & restored to original factory settings) and Easy Share is no more, I will have to explore outside options to get those photos off the iPhone somewhere.  Online photo storage sites have been suggested.  Archaic as it is, I wish I'd just put them all on cd's.
Using the info provided, I did SUCCESSFULLY get all 237 photos off of my iPhone 3.  (yes, I still have it.)  Now I know better and will never ever sync my photo's in iTunes again.
    Thank you all again!!
***Addendum: ALL answers helped, but apparently I can't indicate that.

  • After hard drive crash, how can i copy music from iPhone to music folder on new computer?

My hard drive crashed which contained all my music and backups of my iphone 4s. is there a way (using iTunes or some other method) to copy the music from my iPhone to the Music folder on another computer (with Windows 7 as the OS)? Thanks!!

Thanks for the quick answer! It was not what I wanted to hear, though. But, as long as I regularly sync my iPhone and have one or more backups, I can at least be assured that I won't lose the music that's on my phone.  Correct?  One other thing: when I synced my iPhone to iTunes on another computer, it didn't copy the playlists to iTunes, although the music shows up. Do the playlists get lost?
