Mac has gone horribly wrong

I got this off the internet since i was searching for the problems i am experiencing to find out what was wrong but it summarizes everything i have experienced.
"There are many many problems now and I'll list what's happening:
iTunes - When I try and launch iTunes I get the error "The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (13014)"
Mail - I get the following error when trying to retrieve messages - There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “Gmail” or try again.
The server returned the error: The connection to host pop.gmail.com on port 995 failed.
Appstore - I get "Cannot connect to the app store"
Spotify - Doesn't work, when launching I get the error "keychain "login" cannot be found to store "nothctap" (that's my username). When I try and play a song I get an error "There was a problem storing temporary files on the hard disk"
Safari - Randomly crashes and won't access my internet banking or any apple help sites. I get a blank browser with the following text - Safari can’t open the page “https://discussions.apple.com/thread...rt=0&tstart=0” because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection. This sometimes occurs when the server is busy. Wait for a few minutes, and then try again.
I can't download anything at all, when I try and download something I get the following error - Safari could not download the file “Name of file in here” because there is not enough free disk space."
However, i go to activity monitor and i have plenty of space.
Since these problems have started, my Mac has been slowing down like crazy. It freezes up a lot and i eventually have to resort to powering down by holding down the power button. My Mac is brand new!! i hate this please help!

Great advice from Paul, just to add...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Removing imlib2-cvs: "something has gone horribly wrong

    Hi there,
I did a pacman -Syu today, and pacman wanted to replace imlib2-cvs with imlib2. So far, so good. I said "yes" to the removal, but pacman complained that ffmpeg and adesklets require imlib2-cvs.
So I deinstalled those two packages.
Now, if I try to upgrade, I get the following error message:
error: something has gone horribly wrong
If I pacman -R imlib2-cvs, it claims that imlib2-cvs is required by adesklets and ffmpeg--even though those two packages have been removed.
So obviously, something has gone wrong with the pacman "database." Question is: how can I fix it? Delete the entries for adesklets and ffmpeg in /var/lib/pacman? Delete the entry for imlib2-cvs? Do something completely different?
Some feedback would be much welcome. I hope my system is not broken for good ...
    Cheers,
    -Sascha.rb

    pacman -Rd imlib2-cvs
    pacman -S imlib2
... let me install the new imlib2 package, after all. No idea whether it fixed the weird dependency issue I had ("something has gone horribly wrong"), but at least it's working ...

  • Pacman: "something has gone horribly wrong"

    Hi all,
So I started The Big Xorg Upgrade on my laptop. First I removed xorg (to get around the bitstream fonts conflict) and started pacman -Syu. During the package downloads I noticed that I still use some old configuration where the downloads come from ftp.nethat.com , which is very far from me, whereas now I have a much closer mirror ftp.estpak.ee . So I killed pacman and wget, corrected pacman.conf, and rerun pacman -Syu. The downloads were finished nicely, but then I got the following message:
    checking package integrity...done
error: something has gone horribly wrong
I have never seen such an error before, and probably I should not have seen it at all. But still I did:) So can anyone tell me what it is about and under which conditions is it shown? Should I file a bug report?
    Jan
Edit: I cleared the package cache, downloaded all the packages from the same source and I still get the same message. So it was not a problem caused by the interrupted upgrade (and in fact I have done interrupted upgrades in the past with no problems). Any ideas and/or explanations are greatly welcome.

Tried that and the message is still the same.
Cerebral wrote:On an unhelpful note: that's possibly the scariest error message I've ever seen.
Yeah, Arch is not for cowards:D
But the mystery still stays ... any comments from the developers?

  • Something has gone horribly wrong...

After a days long battle to get my cd's and audiobooks loaded on to my iPod video, all seemed well. On the four hour drive to my girlfriend's parents' house we listened to most of "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe." When we got to her parents' house I plugged the iPod into their Mac (my computer is a PC) to recharge it and to use iTunes to try and get all our audiobooks to be in listed under "audiobooks" instead of "songs."
But then something went horribly wrong. When I looked at the contents of my iPod, almost all the tracks had little exclamation points next to them indicating that the file's location was unknown. In fact, some of the tracks that we'd just been listening to moments before were now missing!
This is very bad because we're in the process of leaving the country for several years, my computer is now in storage and the reason we bought the iPod was so that we could have stories for our long drive and music once we got there.
Can I fix this problem without reloading everything?
    Thanks,
    Ben

Sorry for your loss. This is generally how the iPod works. It is part of the way that Apple is trying to make the recording history by not (easily) allowing people to copy their playlists from machine to machine.
If you have iTunes set to automatically manage your playlists for that iPod it will replace the contents of the iPod when you hook it up to another computer. It should have given you a message that says something like "This iPod is managed by another computer. If you proceed you will loose all songs on this iPod."
At least I think that is probably what happened. You aren't completely clear, but is seems that a few songs were left? If that is the case I don't know how it happened. Perhaps you are using different versions of iTunes and that had something to do with it.
It may be possible to get the music back, but I don't know how to do it. Reloading everything is probably your best bet. Depending upon how much stuff you have and the capacity of your iPod you might want to carry a "backup" of all the files as data. Then if you lost them in the playlists part, you could hook to a friends computer, copy all the data off that partition and reload it. Good luck with that.
If you get the music restored you might want to look into getting a charger of some sort. You won't always be able to count on hooking up to somebody else's computer.

  • The good install that has gone horribly wrong

I have identical iMacs in the house. New 2.8 gHz aluminum models. The day that Leopard came out, we bought a family pack since we have 4 machines capable of running of the OS.
The only two we've updated so far are the iMacs. While the initial install went what one would consider flawless (upgrade after backing up data), its only now that we've started having problems.
After working on setting up permissions for folder/file sharing (home network and all), NOTHING could be accessed, moved, or deleted WITHOUT requiring authentication. Tried for countless hours to try and fix the permissions on the disks to match the working iMac and to no avail could NOT add admin user back to the drives (internal drive + 2 external drives). Don't ask - I dont know HOW it got dropped. It was there one minute and gone the next after file sharing got turned on.
So, backed up what was important (since the TimeMachine drive got hosed as well), and did a reinstall.
Attempt number 1 - Same boat - using just simple reinstall tactics. No permissions fixed
Attempt number 2 - Wipe internal drive - install Leopard. While it fixes the internal drive permissions, the external drives were still hosed.
At this point, copied everything from the external drive to the internal and reformatted the drive with success (restoring permissions), so THAT is good to go.
Trashed TimeMachine backups, reformatted drive. Success with restoring permissions.
Now here's the problem. Since the 2nd install attempt was a clean wipe of the drive and a reinstall of the OS, you can now throw NOTHING away. Everytime you try and empty the trash or move anything even into the trash you get prompted for your password as if its an Administrator action.
Has ANYONE run into this and what can be done to fix it?
I am contemplating restoring the system with the original 10.4 disks and then upgrading to Leopard and not worrying about sharing any folders over the network until this is solved.

First rule in using these forums is to search them. Try permissions, ownership, authentication, etc. There're many topics addressing the problem. See these:

  • My Mac has gone really slow since upgrading to Mavericks. Any suggestions as to how to speed things up again?

My Mac has gone really slow since upgrading to Mavericks. Any suggestions as to how to speed things up again?

First, back up all data immediately unless you already have a current backup. If you can't back up, stop here. Do not take any of the steps below.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • How can I activate Dreamweaver CS3 on a second Apple Mac when the original Mac has gone wrong?

    I have Dreamweaver CS3.
I have used it on my laptop and my desktop Macs.
In the past, I have simply deactivated it on one Mac to use it on the other.
My laptop, which has Dreamweaver activated on it, has a graphics card problem and is in for repair.
I cannot use the Dreamweaver installed on my desktop computer because I cannot de-activate it on the laptop (which is being repaired by Apple and which Apple say they can't access to de-activate it, because there is no screen display).
This is obviously going to be a future problem if one of the Macs blows up while Dreamweaver is activated on it. I will not be able to use the Dreamweaver I bought nor service my website.
    Help! ?

You could always download the trial version until the laptop is fixed. But, I don't know if you can even save a file from CS5 that would be compatible in 3.  It is sucky to not have the single user, two activation license. This is one of the things I applaud Adobe for. Most major software licenses are meant for a single machine, and not so concerned about users - that they know it's unlikely that several users would share a machine.it does happen, but it's also quite an inconvenience.  The two activation solution takes into account a more realistic scenario for a single user. The other option being used with some programs is the dongle, which I also like, even though many others don't for various and valid reasons. Anyway, I just looked at a page in cs4 and it doesn't really save in any particular version, HTML is HTML. I just don't know what will happen if someone goes to open it in CS3 - will it open less any CS4 code, not open, erase the code on save? Will it be the same for 5? Just wondering as you may be able to use the trial.

  • Bootcamp gone horribly wrong, Mac HD GONE

So I was installing Windows XP via bootcamp, and chose Drive C to format it in , but that was weird cause it didnt show any of the usual other drives, so i selected it.
After it was done installing it did the usual reboot, and after it rebooted all i get is a white screen.
I rebooted it again holding down the option key to select which partition to boot from and... ALL PARTITIONS WERE GONE
The Mac HD partition was gone, all I saw was the installation disc.
So i thought i would just reformat the whole drive and reinstall Leopard, but while i was doing that, when it gets to the step "Select a destination to install Mac OS X" Nothing is listed and it cant continue the installation.
So from the installer cd I went to Disk Utilities and confirmed that the Mac HD was gone and Windows partition from bootcamp mightve went over it and wiped it.And I cant even use that windows partition that was called "disk0" cause apparently is was formatted incorrectly.
I cant create a new partition on disk utilities either cause the buttons are greyed out.
What shall I do? I'm at an utter lost

Oh I tried looking up my HD info using the disk utilities info button and this is what i got.
The Macintosh HD partition got replaced with the Windows NTFS Partition named 'disk0' and didnt even format properly.

  • Install has  gone all wrong

    My ipod broke.
guess what? i bought a new one! i have an imac G5 and was on OSX 10.3.X(.8 i think) anyway, got my new ipod 'classic' wey hey! and.... cant use it, as its system requirements need 10.4!!!!
perhaps i was wrong to assume an ipod classic mp3 player woudlnt need an operating system upgrade but ill not moan!
bought Leopard to more expense, which arrived today, chose the install option, which promted me to re-start and begin the installation setup, but it re-started and got to a grey screen with whirring rainbow wheel and stuck there for around 30 minutes atleast, the disk drive sounded busy but it was getting nowhere so i used the power button to re-start and its stuck on the grey apple icon screen with the progress circle moving round and round and the disk making sounds again...
going on holiday tomorrow so in a panic to get it sorted as long boat/train and plane rides without my ipod will be a nightmare!

As I said, if your iMac is the one described in the "this one" link, it only came with 256 MB of memory unless you ordered extra memory from Apple when you bought it, using the "BTO" (built to order) option available only from Apple; or you or someone else added to or replaced the original memory modules with larger aftermarket ones. FWIW, Apple's BTO memory upgrade is relatively pricey; most people remember if they used it.
Unfortunately, I don't have much experience with Macs that came with 10.3.x installed so I'm not sure your original installer discs (not the new Leopard one) has an option to run System Profiler from its "Utilities" or similarly named menu. If it does, you can start up from that disc & instead of running the installer, use its copy of System Profiler to tell you how much memory is installed. This should tell you if insufficient memory is the problem or not.
As a general rule, to avoid unpleasant surprises don't neglect your responsibility to make sure you can meet the minimum system requirements of your potential purchases before you buy them. For Apple products, the online Store is an easy source of this info, for instance at iPod classic - Apple Store (U.S.) or Mac OS X v10.5.6 Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.).

  • Something has gone terribly wrong?

I don't know what on earth has happened to cause this, but here is my situation: I click open my hard drive icon and my former list in the far left column is gone...i formerly had desktop, movies, the little house, applications, music and documents. NOW in the left column I only have 3 items: "backup" (external drive currently connected), "network" and my "hard drive" icons. The second column showing what's on my hard drive no longer has documents, movies, the little house, music.....it's all gone except for applications, library, system, users.
On my desktop, suddenly there is an untitled folder and when i click it open all the contents of my Backup hard drive are shown in the correct columns. This folder says there is 0 items in it though it is packed with everything as if I had clicked open my hard drive.
I am at a loss for words........how could my documents have disappeared......
    help.

OK. So I'm a moron. I clicked on "view tool bar" and it came back. Part of my problem is I never figured out this new mac organizational system. I just don't get it. I am stuck in the old 9 operating system zone. This columned visual just looks too much like a PC with all their portioned drives.........can't stand the fourteen different columns I have to go through to get where I want to go. I guess I need a tutorial. Anybody know of any free ones out there?
    Thanks for your time.

  • My music on iTunes has gone completely wrong. Could anyone please help me?

Hello everyone. I'll try and keep this as unconvoluted as possible so here goes...
I have iTunes 10.4.1.10, although the problem started with the previous update. I was trying to sync music from a Top rated playlist to a new iPhone (a 3GS with up-to-date-software) when I noticed that some of the albums which I had previously has on had disappeared. All of  my albums are saved onto an external hard drive, but the album icons were not on the music library. I put the albums back on (and a few new ones) and a message came up saying that the albums/songs were already there and would I like to replace them; I clicked the 'yes' button. I went about giving the songs I wanted in my Top Rated with no problems and went to sync them as normal. This is where it goes wrong.
iTunes goes through the syncing motions (Steps 1 and 2), reaches Step 3 where it syncs the songs, syncs about 40 of the songs (there are 770 in total) before reaching one of the songs which I had found missing and had put on again. iTunes crashes ( I think that describes it: the 'syncing bar' at the top stays frozen on the song, it will not shut down but everntually stops trying to syns and I can shut it down again; and when I look at the iPod on my iPhone it says cancelling sync and then that it is updating the library before going back to normal).
This was done on the first attempts, now when I try it syncs one songs before the problem song before going wrong. A thing to note about the song before is that the song that ends up on my ipod isn't the one it said that it was syncing, and the songs do not appear to be added in any sort of order.
After this I get a message that the song that caused this cannot be found: 'Attempting to copy to the disk "Charlie's iPhone" failed. An unknown error occurred (-69).' Sometimes this is followed by a similar message which says that the song in question cannot be found.
When I put my hard drive into the computer it says that there may be a problem with some of the files on the hard drive and would I like to scan and fix them, but it does not specify whether those files are music files (there are photo files, Word files, all sorts on it). I haven't given it permission to do so yet, this has not caused problems with previous i-Pods -Phones or Tunes and I don't exactly see how this would affect it now anyway seeing as the files have been re-done (burned off of iTunes and stored on the hard drive directly), but this may help work out the problem.
A few last things. There is are albums which I definately have NOT put onto iTunes or my hard drive which has appeared on my iTunes music selection and I highly doubt are in the house (Bob Acri's self-titled album containing just song 3 and Fine Music, Vol. 1 by Richard Stoltzman containing the second song), they may have been added onto the computer by another family member and just innocently found their way on iTunes and my hard drive, but they're not the sort of thing anyone in my family would listen to, so maybe that might help someone diagnose the problem too.
Also, the same thing is happening with my laptop, which has the previous update to the one I mentioned above. This would suggets that its either the new updates fault or the hard drive's fault, I would suspect it would be the former as the laptop too did not have any issues like this, or indeed at all, before the two updates.
Anyway, thank you for taking the time for reading through, and if anyone could offer any hints or tip or advice to get iTunes back to speed I would be very grateful.
    Thank you!

Having a similar issue.  Everytime i restart itunes its like its the first time its run and wants to look for music.   Yes, please help!

  • Something's gone horribly wrong between 4 apple devices in my house and I am desperate for some help! I have a MacBook Air, my iPhone and my mums iPhone. And I'm having massive syncing issues! PLEASE HELP!

Ok so long story short I have a mac, a MacBook Pro and two iPhones in the house, one is mine one is my mums.
I only recently bought the MacBook Pro, I turned iCloud on on it and used my iCloud account to sync with my phone and now it has:
    A) deleted all my contacts from my phone and MacBook
    B) replaced them with the contacts from my mums phone
    C) deleted iCal from the main Mac
The problem is none of these are supposed to be linked, mum and I don't share the same apple id or log in details, so I don't know why/how this is happening.
Also I went I onto the main mac to try and see if it was an iCloud issue and there doesn't seem to be iCloud installed on the system at all, it just gives and option for "mobile me" and then asks me to install it/activate it.
Can anyone give me any clues as to why this night be happening? And how I can get my contacts back and keep the two phones and computers completely separate?
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Thank you :)

Need to Resume download to complete the ongoing Process.
Last Resort, put the iPhone in DFU mode (Google How to do that). Connect in iTunes. Follow on-screen prompts to Restore. All Data would be lost, if not backed up earlier.
To save the photographs you may have to use third party software. Google is your friend.

  • Power Failure: Boot Camp Installation gone horribly wrong

Was in the middle of the Windows installation part of the Boot Camp setup, and our building had a brief power failure. The Mac went dark. Upon reboot, it boots to a white screen but progresses no farther. The Windows XP install disk is still in the SuperDrive.
    1. Partition was created successfully by Boot Camp Assistant
    2. Windows installation had started, and was in the process of reformatting the partition to NTFS when the power failed.
    3. iMac boots to white screen and stops.
I assume I need to get the WinXP disk out so I can boot from the OS X disk, but it isn't patently obvious how to do this without an OS interface. No hole to poke in a paperclip a la Windows drives.

Tried with no progress: still stuck at WSOD (white screen of death).
    1) Booting with the Install Disk 1 in the SuperDrive while holding down the C key.
    2) Booting while holding down the Command + Option + O + F keys
    3) Booting while holding down the Command + Option + P + R keys
    4) Booting while holding down the X key
    5) Booting while holding down the Option key (this generates a non-functioning mouse pointer on the WSOD, which is more than anything else has done).
I have held down the keys in the following orders:
    a) Before I push the power button
    b) As soon as I push the power button
    c) As soon as I hear the Mac chime
I have released the keys in the following orders:
    a) As soon as the white screen appears following the chime.
    b) Held for 60-90 seconds or more, with no change/response on the screen.
Unless someone else can offer another option, this is likely my next approach:

  • The option to create iCal calendars 'on my mac' has gone since updating to mountain lion

I can create a new calendar 'on my mac' in busycal, but not in ical.
I also cannot create a new reminder list 'on my mac'
Is this intended behaviour, or is this a bug?

I think it's a bug. Same thing happened to me and I managed to fix it.
In Calendar->Preferences->Accounts, disable the iCloud account (there's a simple tickbox). All the iCloud calendars will disappear from Calendar's list.
Now create a new calendar, and it will appear "On My Mac". Make sure that the new calendar does not have the same name as any of your iCloud calendars, to avoid Calendar being tempted to merge them later.
Go back to the preferences and re-enable iCloud. All the iCloud calendars will reappear, and your File->New Calendar menu should now give you the choice of creating in the cloud or locally.
Somehow it got stuck and forgot about the On My Mac choice at installation time, but it seems OK now.

  • Mail on my mac has gone haywire - can anyone help?

My mail account (not my .mac account) on my macbook pro and my iPhone 4 are suddenly sending me the same email 4 or 5 times and marking all previously read emails as unread, filling my inbox with hundreds of 'new' or 'unread' emails - why? And can I stop?

    Hi Clinton
I just called my provider and they tell me they've been inundated with questions about this problem - it seems it's a network issue - not a computer/phone problem.
To answer your question, the account in question is a POP account. My .mac account (which I think is IMAP) is fine.
    But thanks.
